View Full Version : Another 5GHz wireless router question..............

I guess I should have asked before I shelled out a whopping $13.99 :lmao:. but here's my issue.

Facts:

I have a dual band router. My wireless speeds are great using the 2.4GHz band, but I'd like to make good use of my 5GHz band and try and free up some 2.4GHz bandwidth. One of my laptops is 5GHz capable, but one (the couple years newer laptop ) is not.

Issue:

Even though I already bought the Linksys/Cisco AE1000 300Mbps 802.11n Dual-Band Wireless LAN USB 2.0 Adapter w/Extension Cable (and it seems to have great reviews) does anyone think or expect my speeds to be worse using the 5GHz band for two laptops and one or two other devices or will there be any downside to use the above adapter rather than my internal laptop wireless N adapter? FYI the laptops are usually within 30 to 40 feet from the router, so I don't think the 5GHz limited reach should be an issue.

I know I could just wait and try out the adapter when it comes tomorrow, but that wouldn't be any fun. :whee:

Reps will be provided.

The only possible problem is as you said, range. Since you already have a laptop with the 5GHz band and you currently have no issues then you should be good to go. Enjoy :P

I'm not seeing an issue at all with going with both laptops at 5GHz. I don't see any drawbacks anyway. I'd test your throughput though between laptops on 5GHz to see what your rates are and see if they are worth all the effort and money. Push over a large 1 GB ISO or something to test it out. Then perhaps do that in 2.4 GHz and see the difference.
