View Full Version : Any thought to a "non-rebate" forum.

Dunno if this was already suggested but it seems like the "hot deal" forum is about 90% rebates. Many people (myself included) are very adverse to rebates and while some companies are good with rebates many are a complete and utter watse of time.

Sure the easy answer is to just weed through them but since so many are rebate deals I am starting to not even bother to read the forums as deal after deal are with huge rebates or multiple rebates.

Am I nuts? :)

Seems like a "Rebate" deal forum would be a nice way to solve this issue as well as the issue of having so many deals listed that you have to scroll through multiple pages just for the days deals since most are rebates :)

Conduct a poll. See how many people are with you, and how many people don't care. You'd have to take into consideration, though, that many people will even ignore the poll. I myself had visited SlickDeals for quite some time before ever venturing beyond the front page (i.e., I didn't even know there were any forums).

I don't think it's a big deal as long as the OP puts AR in the title. I already glance past stuff labeled DEAD, so if I didn't want to deal with rebates, it's just a matter of looking past another post...

This is brought up pretty much monthly. Sorry, but as you said, 90% of the deals involve rebates. It's just not going to happen.

Why?

Would it not serve everyone to be able to find the "real" deals?

I'm not against rebates but too many of these rebates are from companies that are not on the up and up as far as rebates.

What's wrong with a "Non-rebate Deals" Forum?

I, for one, would be MORE inclined to check this sight if I did not have to spend so long trying to weed through all the rebates and even if I saw a good rebate deal then having to try and figure out if this company is a good rebate or bad rebate company. By the time I figure it out some of the deals are dead.

I appreciate all the hard work and effort that go into slickdeals but the rebates have gotten out of hand. New people do not even know the "lingo" and do not have a clue that "AR" mean after rebate for example and the YMMV took forever for me to figure out.

Considering the number of "deals" that involve substantial rebates - would you prefer that a separate forum be added for deals that do not involve rebates in any form?

For Example:

Hot Deals with rebates forum
Hot Deals without rebates forum

I no longer buy items that require rebates. The hassle is too much..

Yes I think this is a good idea. Although members have been good to use things such as FAR or AR in their titles. Which is nice.

I feel as long as it's included in the subject, there's really no need for it. Just one more page to check.

To Webmaster: Can you at least lock the link to this on the hotdeal forum so it stays on top for at least a day or two? If you bury it here with no reference to where most people read it will not be seen. IE Most people do not read this section and the "moved" link will last about 3 seconds if not locked up top :)

Thanks

jrb531, this suggestion has been posted before. Why does it vex people so much to have both rebate and non-rebate items in the same forum? Rebate items are usually labeled AR or FAR - you can skip clicking on those if you're not interested. I don't think a separate forum is the answer.

At the same time I understand your predicament, as well as the need to be able to sort deals by categories. This is something I hope will be added to the site - a mechanism to filter out threads based on category keywords such as "rebate" or "non-rebate" or even in the case of "electronics", "computers", "furniture" etc. deals. Anyhow, we'll see if we can implement this feature.

Thanks for the response.

It does not vex me as much as it seems the number of "strings attached" deals seem to be increasing due to your own popularity as well as ever increasing deals that require substantial work.

How many great deals involve multiple rebates? Will they honor copies, will they honor multiple rebates, is the company good with rebates etc....

IMHO it seems easier to ask posters to select from two options:

1. Post to rebate forum
2. Post to non-rebate forum

than it is to ask "all" readers to "weed" through one huge forum (you are VERY popular and growing daily) to find deals that are "true" deals and not a side job :)

While I appreciate that you do not want to put any hurdles in the way of the excellent contributors that make this sight what it is I think the slight hassle of selecting a post area would warrant assiting the growing numbers in the "Anti-Rebate" group :)

Either way I thank you for all your work and I will continue to read this great forum even if I have to week through a dozen pages looking for the real deals :)

As others have said, there aren't enough non-rebate deals to warrant their own forum subsection, and nearly every thread that involves a rebate mentions ti in the title.

It'd be a good idea if there were a substantial number of non-rebate deals, but as it is the new section would just be a ghost town.

How about keeping all Hot Deals as is and having a repost of all non-rebate deals in its own forum? This way those who aren't interested in rebate deals can find them easily, and those who are not adverse to rebates can see all Hot Deals.

Simple and everyone is happy.

Agreed. I don't recall seeing many good deals that don't involve rebates. Ghost Town, I say!

All the more reason to let those who hate rebates not have to weed through hundreds of posts just to find the handfull that do not involve a rebate.

This is the entire point of my request. So many "deals" are not really deals if you have to jump through hoops to get them. Some may not mine, others like myself do and it just seemed so easy to create a non-rebate forum. Since there are so few as you say it would not be a hassle to those who love the rebates but if would be a "huge" help to those who pass on rebates.

In fact the number of deals with rebates has grown so much that it is starting to become real work just to find the non-rebate deals.

Then again, the forum's success would depend on people using it. If the forum is created, and people post non-rebate deals in the regular Hot Deals forum, you'd still have the same hassle.

Some deals have more hoops to jump through than others, so I don't see the new forum as help me personally very much. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try, though!
