View Full Version : Asking for reps

I know this has been covered before ... but, is it a SD rule that you shouldn't ask for reps, or is just an annoyance to many of us? I've noticed more and more of this again lately, particularly in the "I have something to giveaway free" thread in Freebies. My understanding is that reps should be earned - for contribution, content, kindness or something of value, not just from asking for it (as in: please give me some rep points because I'm new and don't have any)? Of course, it only continues because some people actually do give reps to beggers.

So, I'm not trying to start a debate here on how and when reps should be given, etc (I know the topic has had many threads devoted to it). I am wondering what the MOD'S take is on the rep begging - is it OK or not? Should it be mod-alerted? Is it acceptable to tell others not to do this?

Thanks.

It's lame. If you are bothered by someone asking for reps, then just don't give them.

for as long as i've been here, asking for reps is definitely frowned upon.

here's an old post by one of the moderators regarding rep abuse. he directed this towards the lounge but i'm sure the same applies to other areas if rep trading is happening in other forums.

IMO, if you ask, then you shall not receive.

I never rep those who ask. And if I run across it in posts, I either remove the comment, or reply with the statement above.

I don't rep people who ask for them, either.
If I'm replying anyway I usually mention that asking for reps is not looked highly upon.

If I could nerp, those are probably the only people I'd nerp. I got a rep the other day that said "hit me back" or something... I'd nerp that person.

I never rep people who ask/beg for them. It's a shame too, because some of them I would have had they not asked.

I've also noticed a lot of rep-begging in signatures and user titles. It really is annoying, but what can ya do.

I was recently accused by a nOOb for creating a thread to corral reps. That really ticked me off and instead of a mod alert I went off on the crapper in a post. Well, the whole thread got deleted, not a big deal. But I agree wholeheartedly that you should earn your reps. Otherwise they are useless and pointless. Oh ya, my reps have gone up since then because of contributing and the nOOb hasn't done a thing. "Ignorance washes through the sieve of negativity..."

By the way, your doing pretty good on your reps to posts ratio.

Let the Mods know. It's a form of trading, IMO, and that's not allowed.

Scroll up, top left User CP... Shows the last 5. If you want a whole list, I think you can PM a mod.

Ok nobody in this thread rep me. :P

If they don't sign it then you can't find out. Admin might have a function in the back end to do this but unless there was a serious problem then I doubt they would look them up.

Obviously you know, 'cause that's what your signiature is about... as well as your user title, which I'm going to mod alert. Woo.

He is obviously joking...He doesn't even have his reputation turned on. He'll receive a warning if he has his rep points turned on and is asking for points.

it is easy enough to ignore the people who just ask for reps and not give them

what about the ones who post

"PM me coke codes and I will rep you"

isn't that an offer to trade/sell reps ? shouldn't that be mod alerted and removed by mods?
reps should not be for sale or trade, right?

Yes, please Mod Alert those.

The mods are in talks about this situation. It will probably become a rule that asking for reps will be a rule violation & subject to a warning.

In the mean time, Mod Alert any you see.

wow, the mods are busy enough as it is without dealing with people asking for reps or offering them as a form of trade for codes. it's ashame because now they have more work on their plate.

That area seems shady to me.

Sometimes if I need help with a computer problem or help finding a deal I'll mention that I will rep those who help me.

To me that shouldn't be against the rules. I feel like encourages participation and helping others. If they see that helping others gets them reps, they will be more likely to help other people when the time comes....even if they don't get reps.

I mean..I guess I'll stop if its not okay with the mods....but its a straighfoward...."you helped me out, you get some reps."

I have to agree here. But as SC says, I'll abide by that rule if the mods think it's necessary.

I am pretty sure you can still rep when given help without it being a problem. I just wouldn't post that you will give reps in turn for advice.

One thing irks me BIG TIME about SD, is reading a thread & having to scan these very "informative" , endless "posts" :

rep

rep

txs

rep

....

looking for some meaningful info I know will eventually be somewhere.

This begging & collecting "points" [what many call "posting"] is very childish & in the end, really pitiful.

In my mind I hear:

... rep ... rep ... yap ... yap ... rep ... yap ...

.... doggy wants a scratch behind the years .... doggy has been good and wants a cookie.

Real sad.

:disagree:

this is just like saying thank you to a post.....in other words, acknowleding gratitude.

i say thanks when i'm thankful. just the same, when i rep i say "repped". maybe the "repped" post is just to remind me that i've already repped the OP if I ever went back to that deal (so I don't have to rep again).

another reason to make a post, whether to comment, say "thanks" or "repped" may be the poster(s) reason to mark that thread as read so they don't go back to it.

And by people saying thanks it keeps a good deal on the front page and more noticeable.

I don't buy the "posting thxs to keep a deal on the front page": OK for someone to do that after a while to keep it fresh, but that does not justify the "posting marathon" , one after the other every minute ??? every 15s ???

And if it's such a good deal, what about finding a few good words to say so ?

I suppose, for many people, it's the relentless hunt for "making points" , compounded with laziness.
If a deal is really good , there will be enough people who have something to say, sparing us the pages after pages of drivel

No need to look for examples - everyone knows that many, many threads go on for too many pages & only less than 10% is meaningful.

SD should have a cut & paste area, for those who'd like to make believe they are productive members of the forum :

Thanks, I was looking for that.

Thanks, I did not know - sounds good.

Thanks, I knew about it, it's interesting.

Thanks, a friend told me it was good.

.....

or, they should get rid of this stupid rep points. :P

no :D I wrote all this in the hope to get some more rep points.

Problem? no.

Nearly as bad as posts which are full quote of previous message - itself often the quote of a quote ..... - in case we forgot what was said one line above. ;)

I agree that it does seem very silly. There is a thread somewhere around here (in site issues and suggestions) where a couple people talk about that... but my search skills are apparently lacking. Maybe someone else will come along and be able to find it.

All I have to say is that when I post in help me find a deal, or asking for a carfax or something like that it IS ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE to sign off with something like.

"TIA and 3 reps to those who help"
