View Full Version : How do you view popular/new threads?

I don't doubt there's a way to do this, but I can't figure it out. Let's say you want to look at "hot" threads going on, those that are new (say, as of today, or the last 24 hours, or whatever) and have at least X number of posts?
About all I can find is "Today's Posts," but that lists everything from today, including threads with one post in it or a thread from six months ago that was just bumped.

at this time, all you can do is scroll through the pages of threads and look for threads with alot of posts, thumbs-up, and pages to them.
as time goes on, you'll get quicker at it and it will be easy to find them.
Generally, the Hottest threads are on the first page of Hot Deals (http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdisplay.php?sduid=47603&f=9)
and then of course, there is the "Front Page" (http://slickdeals.net/) where the Hottest Deals are made into Permadeals (to the left on the front page). These deals are hand-picked by the Admin. of the site
On the right side of the front page are threads that have had alot of action/clicks to them ... threads which have alot of action are rotated through there automatically.
hope this helps :)

I don't know if this will help you get at least some of what you wanted or not, but you can click on the words 'thread started' at the top of a forum and it will sort the forum according to thread start date, newest first, helping to eliminate some of those 6 mos old threads that just got bumped.
You can also sort the forums by clicking on 'rating' which will give you all of the highest thumbs up first (but from any date, depending on the forum 'thread cut off date' you have set in your user cp, not just today).
And in your user CP, you can set your 'options' to always sort by thread start date if you want (but not by rating.)
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you can sort by start date and also by rating at the same time. Sorry :(

Thanks for the tips, folks. There's so much data on this forum that every little bit helps.

Unfortunately you can't even limit the date range to use when doing the ratings search. If you set the "sorted by rating" and "from the (whatever date range, lets say week)" options on the bottom of the forum it SHOULD bring back all the posts from the last week sorted by rating. However it currently uses last post date and not thread start date which makes this option useless. I requested that this be fixed about a month and a half ago and Mr.SD said if he has time tonight he might take a look at it (no promises). :worship:
With the option to limit by day, 2 days or week you really don't need to sort by rating AND date, this would actually be better.

popular threads are seen usually by the red enevlop on the left.

Something like this (http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=9&page=1&pp=80&sort=voteavg&order=desc&daysprune=1)? :)
It's actually pretty useful if you're short on time.

thanks Mr. SD .... I didn't know about that :D
when I click on that link (which is the same as clicking on "rating", right?), there is a Thread that I know for a fact has 3 thumbs up and is not showing up when you sort by rating.
Have you been having any trouble with threads sometimes not showing up when sorting by rating?

Clicking on the rating column sorts by rating and filters out threads with a start date older than 7 days. The link is similar but it filters out thread older than 1 day. All the sorting and filtering options can be refined at the bottom of the forum page.

Thanks. Could you make the same fix for sorting by replies? (http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdisplay.php?sduid=83027&f=9&daysprune=1&icon=0&order=desc&sort=replycount). That may be a more useful indicator of popularity than the ratings, but it currently shares the same problem that Killerz above described that a ratings sort used to have.
