I think we should have a giving away thread! People can give away things that they don't want anymore! It would be totally free (except maybe shipping and handling!) Think of how this would improve SD! It would make it really popular!!!!

This would not be a buying/selling thread, so it wouldn't interupt the agreement policy/rules!

I think we should really do this!

Sincerely,
dcantlerman

How would one handle the situation: "I have a small gadget for free. BTW, the shipping is $50."

Add to that...and now I know where you live......

We should just demand an SD section on craigslist.

Guess some trust would be involved... Why so paranoid?

Because people are largely dicks.

Anyways, just check out www.freecycle.org if you want to give stuff away (or get stuff that other people are giving away).

Because someone showed up on my front door once and followed me around while I foodshopped....and cornered me in the parking lot....

You can donate in your local community to places like schools, libraries, churches, homeless shelters...etc....

I agree, you should consider donating locally to people or charitable organizations who may actually 'need' stuff before offering them up online or in the paper for anyone to take.

I actually just donated a ton of stuff to a place that helps people that are low income and burned out of their homes etc....and every year I go through my closet and get rid of the clothes that are in good shape that havent been worn in a year...even if I love it....if I havent worn it in a year....it goes...

I end taking a bunch of stuff to goodwill everytime I move, makes my move that much easier, gets rids of things I'll never miss anyway.

Did you use it for anything besides brushing your teeth?

i think the 'free stuff' thread is a great idea. you'd have to add to it a rating system where you are ranked according to feedback on the quality / quantity of what you give away. the better your rating the higher your priority of getting the stuff being given away by others.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you that's completely retarded. That would mean users not having full control over who gets their stuff.

uhmmmm, when you leave something outside with a 'free' sign on it do you control who gets your stuff?

heck, when you put something on ebay you don't even get to control WHO gets your stuff.

if you really care so much about who is going to get the stuff you care so much about that you are GIVING IT AWAY FOR FREE, maybe you would not want to list it on the internet as a give away.

Except that the whole point of giving things away on the internet is that you get to pick and choose who gets it, otherwise why NOT just leave it outside for anyone to take?
And eBay is for selling stuff, unless I've missed something. Nobody cares who gets their stuff because they just want money for it.

Some forced giveaway hierarchy is a really stupid idea, sorry. What happens when one person has the higest rating by a large margin? Yeah, they get all the free crap while everyone else gets shafted. Brilliant. :P

no offense, but, you just don't get it.

and why do you feel it necessary to call our idea 'retarded' and 'stupid'???

relax man, we're just thinking out loud.

the system you seem to espouse has no basis in any kind of supply and demand / capitalist market place. mine does.

again, no offense, but you just don't get it. i'll bet when you first heard about ebay you said: "so i have to send someone money and 'TRUST' them to send me the merchandise??? HA! that'll never work."

(oh - ps, the guy that has the 'highest rating,' would be the guy that gives away the most stuff. get it????)

i think gords point is that some of us have freinds/people we are more friendly with this board and some we don't. lots of people if they would be giving anything away would want to give first shot to those people. or say there is a person like arachnid who posts a lot of great game deals that i've gotten in on. he would like something i'm giving out and as a thanks i'd like to give it to him. but with your system a person who's given out say a thousand floss/toothbrush samples (my friends dad is a dentist) he has would have first shot.

all in all, 99% chance you won't get a giving away/free forum so all this is pointless.
