Does anyone know here if you can start a branch of this organization without being a church?

It sounds like a great idea - much like a food co-op instead of just a handout.

Thanks! Alan Chiras.

I think the whole point is that it is Church related.... Angel Food...
You could go to Wal Mart and buy food then try to resell it in your front yard I guess.

I went and picked up my angel food ministries food today. the only thing they sub was tater tots for french fries. I also got a call the host site manage to get a pick up site in the town I live in so I didn't have to drive twenty five minutes to pick up my order then drive home. Hopefully it will go as good as it did today. every (every $30) box was already put in a box.

This is a popular question. This is a reprint of the answer on Page 16:

There are several organizations that are not affiliated with a church. I have seen some community organizations (e. g., Lion's Club & 4-H) and police juries that do this. However, AFM approves all host sites so I cannot tell you exactly how they approve host sites.

The application for becoming a host site is rather painless. There is a $50 application fee, but that is refunded if your application is rejected.

There is also a nice FAQ on Page 16. PM me if you have any questions. I'll get the July menu up here in a moment.

I put the boxes together at my church. This month has several good selections of meat. July's Menu looks very good. We are located in Gwinnett County, Ga and are looking to get the word out for more people to try Angel Food. We don't receive any money from this. If you order 10 or more we will deliver. Check us out here for the address: http://www.njbchurch.org/.

Both my parents and I do this program. I would highly recommend any college students not in a dorm to take advantage of this.

I DO NOT agree with the program being for "everyone". They give these papers out at Social Services to people who are on Food Stamps. A friend showed me the paper she got a while back and it clearly states "food stamps/EBT accepted".. doesn't mention credit cards and all the things that most of society live on. If this was for everyone it would be posted in the newspaper, tv, etc.. Think... its things like this that help the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. There are some people who need things like this and due to "limited supply" I think its not right to post this here.

holy fark, this thread disgusts and appalls me.

getting deals and catching price mistakes is one thing, taking advantages of programs meant for low income and people in need is totally different. This is as if you go to the soup kitchen everyday and eat there. Yeah, they're not going to ask for your tax return to see if you qualify, but abusing these kind of programs is just low.

The fact that they take food stamps should tip you guys off. The fact that this is a charity based organization, with many people VOLUNTEERING should basically confirm it. Why would people volunteer their time, so that the rich could save 50 dollars off their monthly food bill?

So you're going to take advantage of this program and take opportunities away from other people who prob could use this better?

Sometimes it amazes me how much SDers would go through just to save some small amount of money.

well said Big Wang.

I am not putting anyone down.. nor do I feel high and mighty. YOU KNOW if you need it.. if you feel guilty getting it, that should be a clue. It talks about food stamps and stuff on their website. The paper has about foodstamps, volunteering, church ran, etc.... can you say FOR THE NEEDY any more clearly. I don't care what they say, of course they say "come all" they want to help everyone. But I am sure they expect people to have the morals to know whether they need it or not.

And YES there are shortages. My friend who is widowed due to Iraq with four kids uses this program. I distinctly remember her telling me she was wanting to buy something extra, something about all meat or something, steaks.. and they were out of it.

Like Big Wang said... this is not a Slick Deal.. this is for people who feel they NEED it. If you feel you need it, go for it... its NOT a "Deal".

by the way... other threads have been started about this "Really Cheap Food" (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=131301&t=318614&)

In college, I qualified for food stamps, but did not use them out of principle. So let's assume low income includes some families that even make too much money for food stamps yet can't afford to feed their families (the system isn't perfect). Accepting food stamps in this case means nothing, any family that would benefit from the help should receive it. All the grocery stores in town post all over that they accept food stamps, does this mean the stores are out of my financial class?

I think SD includes lower income to even some people that are rich, and make the most of that by using SD. Obviously if you pull up to one of the distribution sites in a Escalade, you need to rethink your life and your economic situation.

The food definitely helps. My only complaint now is that for the price, you could almost get comparable products at Wal-Mart. The meat add-ons are worth it though. By the way, my distribution site prefers Paypal payments, and takes credit cards.

I've worked with AFM in the past and I can verify that this program IS for EVERYONE. They do accept food stamps and a large part of their outreach is to those who can't afford good food, but they really have been trying to reach out more to the middle class because they want to provide good food for everyone. In fact, they've recently been changing their knowledge materials to directly target that audience, because they realize many people have the misconceptions as those posted above. I cannot state this strong enough: Angel Food is for EVERYONE and they STRONGLY welcome the middle class and even upper class to participate if they want. It benefits them because the more people buying the food, the better deals they get with their contacts. Remember, they are not selling "about to go bad" food. They are selling the same stuff you get at your local grocery and they have just worked extra hard to get low prices. They want them lower and to do that, they need EVERYONE who wants to buy Angel Food to get it. Also, according to a recent magazine of theirs, credit card processing will be available soon and is already available in some places.

Also, to answer another question, you can start a host site without being a church. Some of their host sites are actually out of people's garages. They always have a window of time to pick up food because the trucks come to the distribution point with refrigerated food--whether that point be a church or garage or whatever--and people can grab it from there.

PS If anyone has any other similar questions, feel free to post them here and I can try to get an answer as I still know many people at their main offices.

I started to answer one question in this thread, but I couldn't stop myself from answering others. Here's some Q& A on Angel Food Ministries:

Q: Where does the food come from and how can they sell it at such a low price?
A: I do not know where the food comes from, specifically, but I did ask how they get it to cheap. It's really pretty simple: volume and overhead. This ministry is so huge that they order more food each month than Wal-Mart, and they have very little overhead. I do not know if they have a deal with the trucking company, but the distribution is run by volunteers and, therefore, cost-free.

Q: I'm not fond of churches. What's with the religious connection?
A: Take heart that more churches are doing more of this kind of thing. For too long, churches have preached a lot of "help your fellow man" without actually doing it. You should be encouraged that many are seeing the light and getting back to "love your neighbor." So, before you judge, you might give these guys a try. Everyone deserves a second chance.

Q: Do the churches make any money off of this?
A: Yes, they get a kickback - a whopping $1 per box. If this were a way to increase church revenue, it would be a lousy one. I haven't heard a single person tell me this is a financial windfall for their church.

Q: If I get some bad food, is there anything I can do about it?
A: If you do get poor quality food, I recommend you tell someone about it. The churches need to know this. Each shipment comes with a few duds, In my experience, the volunteers try to take that home. (Most recently, they ran out of rice so the volunteers agreed to give their rice to the other participants.) If you find the dud after you get home, just tell them on your next trip. I'm sure they will double-check your box. Hey, they may even throw in something extra. ;)

Q: What about...?
A: This reply is getting far too long. Drop me a private message if you have more questions.

February will be our first month as a host site. If you live south of Baton Rouge, PM me and feel free to join in! :D

I would love to see this put in the Wiki!

Thanks! Alan Chiras.

Acutally, if you research the program, the more boxes that are purchased, the better deals they receive as they are buying in bulk. Angel Food Ministries have been around for years now. With the price of food and gasoline, many people that used to be able to donate and support food banks are now being forced to get help from the very organizations they supported in the past. One never knows what someone's personal financial situation is, so I try not to judge.

This program is advertised in the paper and on tv. It's usually found in the community section. They don't have a formal ad campaign I imagine as they are non-profit and it takes big bucks to advertise on tv. I imagine they don't accept credit cards as it costs someone up to 5% of the charges to accept it. That's why most convenience stores don't like customers who charge under $5 as they really don't make any profit because they have to pay credit card fees. Some people that truly need help will not go to soup kitchens as they are embarrassed. I applaud this program as it's made available to everyone in neighborhoods and they try to make everyone comfortable in using it. My mom used to do coops in the 60's and 70's and that's basically what this program is.

This program is available to everybody, regardless of income. Before you uninformed people have a misplaced "moral" rant, read the information on their webpage and think a little. Or listen to the people who are actually involved with the program, like some of the other posters here. Yes, they accept food stamps. So does Walmart. Does that mean that only poor people are allowed to shop at Walmart?

The Angel Food Ministry deals are available because they purchase in bulk. I cannot stress that enough. In order to purchase in bulk, you have to have LOTS of people participating in the program. Each local center should be distributing many boxes of food so the associated costs are spread out among many. By paying your money and getting your box, you are supporting this program and helping it continue. You ARE paying for the food, no one is just giving it to you, nor are you ever taking food or money from somebody else who needs it.

Orders are placed and paid for ahead of time. Buying a basic box will never mean that somebody else doesn't get theirs. There are basic boxes and "special" boxes, which are usually all meat and can only be ordered if you have purchased a basic box. Yes, the availability of these "special" boxes may be limited because they are considered optional add-ons. If you are truly worried that people in need won't be able to order their extra steaks that month, don't order the extra boxes. But my thinking is still that the more demand they have, the more they will be able to purchase. If they report demand for more of the extra boxes, the program will be able to use that information to buy more for all the locations next time. They don't have extra "special" boxes available because it's meat and can't be stored for that long, so they need to make sure they don't ever order more than they can distribute that week.

To top it all off, many churches distribute religious materials with the food. There was nothing offensive, but it is a form of Christian outreach. In fact, this kind of program is the best part of Christianity, in my opinion, building community and helping others. Even a non-churchgoer like myself can appreciate and respect non-judgmental good works in the community.

So those of you who are saying only poor people should participate in the program are missing the big picture in many different ways.

 I guess I need to stop buying my groceries from stores that accept food stamps?

I don't think there is anything wrong with this being discussed on SD at all. It is clearly obvious that the more boxes sold, the more money the charity makes. Additionally people (such as myself) would have never known about this program. For July, I plan to buy 2 boxes, one for my family and one to donate.

I'm sorry that some of you don't understand the Angel Food Ministries program. I wish you would PM me or do some research with people who actually participate before you post things here discouraging others. It is possible you have been misinformed. If I have a beef with AFM, it's that the name is too easily confused with other programs: Angel Tree, Angel Ministiries, Water Angel... and so on. Some of those programs do target those in financial need, and you are right that we don't want affluent people fradulently bogging down those ministries.

As the director of an AFM host site, I can tell you that I put about 100 hours a month into this program, and another 30+ volunteers give up a Saturday each month and more. Each and every one of you are welcome to participate. It is more than just a food program. It is a community event in which we come together and share through hard work and smile. It's kind of like a monthly harvest celebration. Sure, I get a lot of e-mail and telephone calls from people who are struggling. But none of them are denied a chance to participate in AFM due to a lack of resources or due to an overabundance of less needy participants.

Feel free to PM me if you have further questions. Or visit my FAQ on Page 16 of this thread. :D

I have to agree that angel food is for everyone and anyone. The more that is ordered the more that afm can buy in bulk and pass on the savings onto us. I do get food stamps (about $35 and), but if I didn't get food stamp I would still order angel food. I have seen two host site quit because they didn't have enough orders and one of those sites was the only one in the town that I live in. So if you are not ordering because you think its for only low income. You might be causing some one that is low income not to get it because the host site close to them close because of low orders. For the ones who say its only for low income: help some one out buying a box your self instead of telling people not to order and help to keep afm in your town. Yes there is people out there that struggles without food stamp.

If you don't need a box but know someone who does, buy it for them. Leave it on their doorstep and ring the bell. It can do so much to remind someone that things will get better. It will make you feel great, too.

Wonderful Idea!

Obviously if you pull up to one of the distribution sites in a Escalade, you need to rethink your life and your economic situation. - Good Metaphor for what I was talking about... also the comment about buying from walmart because they accept food stamps... well they also accept credit cards at walmart, which they dont at AF.

The things I keep spotting in this thread is that AF wants to *start* reaching out to more people so they can afford more boxes, etc... Thats great.. But that also validates that AF has been about the needy for years. This is the only way I know the program. Bravo for them expanding... great..

I also agree with the poster who said the stuff is no better a deal than you can get at walmart, etc.. I don't think the food is that great a deal ("breaded chicken chunks??? You mean Chicken Nuggets?).. and it will always be, to me, something for the lower of income.

Anyway... I'm sick of arguing about it... go buy a box, give it to someone, volunteer at the local soup kitchen, etc.. but if you think that you are gonna offset your grocery budget and your new jaguar with this program then there is a problem.. remember... someone is always making money off a business, there is no such thing as non-profit anymore..

I am involved in a group trying to help low income and abused women. Yesterday was our second Angel Food order. We are finding that some low income individuals are more likely to participate if we tell them this is just a "good deal" on food, it is not low quality, and we are purchasing it ourselves and feeding it to our families. Some of our middle income families participating in Angel Food are using the money they save to help others, but as others have pointed out here, there are no income restrictions.

[QUOTE=aerogurl;11810259]well said Big Wang.

" I distinctly remember her telling me she was wanting to buy something extra, something about all meat or something, steaks.. and they were out of it."

The organization has to order in advance, and it receives the EXACT amount of what is pre-ordered. We have people ask at pickup if we have extras they can purchase, and we don't. It has nothing to do with somebody who is not low income ordering, it has to do with the number of boxes we order. We can order and receive as many as we want.

AFM
06-22-2008, 05:21 PM
well they also accept credit cards at walmart, which they dont at AF. ..

This is inaccurate. AFM accepts credit and debit cards via the new online ordering system now available in many states. I explained this to you via PM, but for some reason, you keep making this claim. I don't understand how to make this clearer.

But that also validates that AF has been about the needy for years. This is the only way I know the program.

AFM started in 1994 when they served 34 families from their back porch. As far as I know, there were no food stamps accepted and no "needy" families in attendance beyond what most of us encounter among our own neighbors. To claim that this is only for the needy is misleading. It is great, however, that we can do that too.

I also agree with the poster who said the stuff is no better a deal than you can get at walmart, etc.. I don't think the food is that great a deal ("breaded chicken chunks??? You mean Chicken Nuggets?).. and it will always be, to me, something for the lower of income. .

Now, you are changing the argument. If you don't like the food, hey, you can have your opinion. That's fine. It seems your original point has been rebutted so now you are taking aim at other targets. Yes, if you are a vegetarian, for example, this isn't for you. However, I do hope that we will be able to create a vegetarian menu at some point in the future. How cool would that be!

In January, we sent someone to Wal-Mart to duplicate a standard menu purchase and they spent $77.. not $30 like AFM charges. I'm sorry I can't procude a Pricegrabber comparison for you, but it IS a better deal than you get from Wal-Mart. You are simply wrong on that point.

And finally, there is the strawman. You defeated an argument that no one made. Please show me the post where someone claimed they were saving up for a new car by using AFM. If you have a few hours, I can share many stories with you. It's amazing what people can do with an extra $50 or $100 at the end of the month. It goes farther than you think! But you're probably right. The real benefit is to the community at large and the feeling of unity that it creates.

I can understand your skepticism. There are a lot of fakes out there. Life has taught many of us to be wary. We at AFM are really trying to change that. Just give us a chance.

No. and pushing down our throats is not going to make us like it. Its cheap priced food.. if someone drives a mercedes and feels like using AF, go ahead, I still have the right to think they are a piece of crap. Do you really think those of us who spend $30 on one dish at a restaurant would be happy with the quality of food we receive at AF?? seriously? I'm just saying... I don't need it... others do... end of.

I see that this post has gone from 'this is a great deal' to 'i'm a snob and couldn' t possibly eat cheap food". I am honestly shocked that someone who frequent slickdeals--a website dedicated to getting good deals on everything under the sun--actually believes that quality and price are connected. Just because you pay more for something doesn't mean it's higher quality, and just because you pay less doesn' t mean it's lower quality.

That $30 dish you buy at the restaurant may only contain $5 worth of ingredients. So, yes, you MIGHT be happy with the quality of food, IF you gave it a chance. In fact, AFM usually provides restaurant packs of food--the ones without additional packaging--so some of the package may, in fact, be the exact same food you're ordering at a restaurant. But this is no longer about the quality of the food, or whether or not it's a good deal. Now it's about you and your elitist attitude. So, this is definitely NOT a deal for you. I thank the OP for posting it for others.

You enter a thread entitled "Angel Food" and make a sweeping judgment about the program, its purpose, and even its presence on the SD forum. (It's funny you would accuse me of "pushing it down your throat." In psychology, that's called "projection.")

Your inaccurate information is rebutted in a respectful manner with nothing more than the truth. You resort to name-calling. (Yes, I am with AF Police, and I know where you live!) :D

I spend my time letting people know about a useful program. You spend yours trying to denegrate it. Sorry, that doesn't sit well with me. As much as you feel like you needed to speak out against this, I feel the need to defend it. We probably aren't going to agree on that point. I'm fine with that. But I will continue to post here as long as this continues to help people. Call me crazy.

Go in peace. Enjoy your other Slick Deals.

Again, as of late, food quality has been great. We're not ,by any means, low-income; although with commutes of 100 and 140+ miles per day, we may very well be low-income soon enough.

Those who are knocking AFM do not have a clue.

Wow...I'm kind of irked at the cluelessness.

BTW , throughout the surrounding area of the nearest host site there are AFM brochures. I mean, everywhere, whether it be at gas stations, banks , conveinience stores, etc. I'm sure somebody took flyers to the nearest social workers office that my good friend aerogurl mentioned. It's just people trying to get the word out.

From what I understand, the host site that I purchase from is using the additional funds to buy needy families food and is also using some money towards their missionary ministry. Funny thing is they make no mention of religion except to ask if there is something you'd like them to pray for. Pretty good people, if you ask me.

GREAT! That last sentence should end the great debate. WOO HOO!

The nice thing about Slick Deals is it gives members the opportunity to participate in deals that make sense to the individual and to ignore threads that do not make sense to the member. (Notice I wrote "ignore" and not "continue to degrade members who choose to participate in a deal").

Thanks, OP. I was not aware of this program. I immediately called my father and his church was not aware of the program either-- but they now plan to look into it. I'm sure several other churches will now participate because you provided this information. Not only were you successful in sharing a great deal, but you spread the word about a fantastic program and, I'm sure, helped it grow further.

Angel Food is for everyone. It is said so, its not for the poor. In fact, like others have said they encourage you to buy it cause it supports them since they buy in bulk. I could care less if you're rich and want to buy AFM or not because i don't judge others. In fact it is encourage as mentioned before.

Anyone who feels rich people buying AFM is depriving others of food needs to take a hard look at themselves, contact AFM, the media and let everyone know how the poor are being neglected (trust me you'll look like a fool doing it but if you feel so strongly being right then DO IT). Anyone feeling buying AFM is cheap and waste of time needs to stay away from them; so the food can be kept for people who are grateful to AFM. At the same time, stay away from this thread and lets keep this thread clean. No need to keep mentioning how this is poor men's food or for the poor etc when it is mentioned multiple times it is for everyone, even if you drive a Mercz or Lexus. Food is food. If you have too much money, stay away and keep your negative comments to yourself.

There is a nice fruit/vegetable special available with the July menu. This minor change came from AFM today:

Please note the following change to Special #4 on the July Menu. The "1 lb. Strawberries" in the Fresh Fruit and Veggie Box has now been changed to "4 California Oranges". We have updated the menu on the website to reflect this change.

From time to time, in order to provide adequate quantities to meet the demands of all host sites, we must alter our menu or substitute items. We always strive to avoid this situation, but when we must perform a substitution we commit to inform our host sites as early as possible to avoid any confusion.

Please update any menus you publish or distribute to reflect this change.

I have updated the menu on Page 18. :)

Shut up and go do some volunteer work if you feel that guilty those boxes are for anyone who will buy them.

For those who can't eat or don't want certain foods, at our pickup we ask that if there's anything you don't want, you donate it to our food pantry. Thank you to all the SDers who volunteer with AFM. As someone new to AFM (volunteer and purchaser) I think it's a wonderful program. I have been very happy with the quality of the food.

There are some people who need things like this and due to "limited supply" I think its not right to post this here.

reading>you.

learn to read. and thats not something your escalade can help you do.

http://www.angelfoodministries.com/menu.asp

Why? AFM has expanded their choices making it more difficult to type and edit it here. But that's good news. They are now offering you the choice of purchasing either a Regular Menu for September or a Senior Menu.

The Regular Menu offers a wide variety of items that you would find any given month while the Senior Menu includes a host of easy-to-prepare meals for senior adults designed to service two people for about a month. The purchase of either menu makes you eligible to purchase the Specials.

And this month, they are offering FIVE Specials. The Fruit and Veggie Box is back, and they offering a 10-lb bag of Chicken Wings just in time for football season.

If you have never ordered from AFM before, feel free to PM me with questions. We are in our 7th month as a host site serving our community now reaching over 300 families with quality food for a price that cannot be beat.

I haven't done this in the past because the 40 minute drive would have killed us on gas and not ended up saving any money. How small are the senior meals? I wish I could tell you more about the Senior Box from experience, but it's a first time thing. I'm anxious to see what it contains. Here is a blurb from the folks at AFM:

Last Friday we were given a tremendous opportunity to provide a senior citizens box that is nutritious and economical. In our continuing efforts to provide the best food to the hundreds of thousands of people we reach out to each month we decided that this would be a huge benefit to our senior community, but you don't have to be a senior citizen to order them.

The Senior Box will be packaged much like our specials and will not have to be assembled by the host site. The meals are slightly different than the former senior boxes that we offered in that they do not provide the milk and bread. These are top quality meals that will provide senior citizens the nutrition they need with the great quality they have come to expect from Angel Food Ministries.

This senior box is now going to be added to our monthly menu, and it will be treated just like a regular box. You will be able to order the senior box and still have access to our specials, which will be an added benefit to our senior citizens.

I know today was September distribution day. I was wondering how it went. Would anyone like to share? This s my first month of not doing it. So I am wondering how it went.

It was a mixed bag. The bulk of distirbution went well, but I was very disappointed that AFM didn't come through with any of the Senior Boxes for Septembers. They warned us mid-month that demad was exceeding supply, but I didn't think it was that bad.

Per their normal routine when something is shorted, the September Senior Boxes will arrive with the October shipment. Our customers were very gracious about this - they're the best - so spirits were still high. A few requested subsitutions (either regular menus or specials), but of the 50+ orders we had, no one insisted upon a refund.

Sadly, this also means I will have no feedback on the quality of this new item. Hopefully, AFM will fix the supply issue in October and we'll know then.

On the positive side, we processed a TON of Disaster Assistance Food Stamps that FEMA gave out after the hurricanes. As a taxpayer, I like to see people getting the most for our money! :) And you certainly get that with AFM...

People keep e-mailing me asking what the age requirements are for the "Senior Box". Of course, there are no age requirements. I think I am going to e-mail the main office and recommend they change the name to "Convenience Box". I think that's a more accurate description anyway. We'll see if that gets anywhere... ;)

I know the first time they offer the convenience box as a special the description was a little misleading. I read the description for a family of four and I wasn't the only one. It turn out like the senior box. I just bought that one month. But it did come in handy for us because we use the meal for to take to work or school (depending on who took it) and use it for the meal. Of course my son drank the pint of milk that came in the special.

November menu is due out sometime this week. It would be nice if they could do a special that would have the fixing for a thanksgiving dinner. The same thing for Dec. special have a special with the fixing for Christmas dinner. It is wishful thinking.

just saw this. i think i'll forward it to my grandma (or rather tell her about it). older people on a fixed income need as much help as they can get and this food will probably last her month since she only eats a little bit.

How about a sneak preview? I do not have the November menu, but I do know they will be offering a "Thanksgiving Special" that will be a Thanksgiving dinner for 4-7 people for $30. Here's what it will include:

7lb. (avg) Roaster Hen
2lb. Cream Corn (Southern Style, Pre-Seasoned, Heat & Serve)
2lb. Green Beans (Blue Lake, Pre-Seasoned Heat and Serve)
2lb. Mashed Potatoes (Pre-Seasoned Heat and Serve)
17 oz. Corn Bread Dressing (Southern Style, Cook and Serve)
8ct. Dinner Rolls
Gravy Mix
15 oz. Cranberry sauce (Frozen)
Holiday Pie

I suspect supplies will be limited so contact your host site as soon as the menus are posted. ;)

The beauty of this deal (as always with AFM) is that you don't need to fight your way through the Wal-Mart crowd and spend 30 minutes in the check-out to get ready for Turkey Day.

Question: Have any of you ever tried past AFM holiday specials?

AFM the only holiday special I did was a couple of years ago in December. It was the stuffed chicken combo. That was the only one. This is the first time since I have done angel food that they have done a dinner special for the holidays. Which I am glad that they are. This way people have a choice to wait in in line or not.

We ordered the flavored chicken breast special our first month ordering from AFM, but we didn't notice that it was "flavored". It must have been some kind of cajun marinade because it was spicy! My wife said it was too spicy for her. I tried cooking it a couple of different ways, but she fianlly gave up on it. So in the end, more for me!

These look like fairly mild flavorings, but do not order these thinking they are the same as plain boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You will notice the difference.

Also, note that Distribution Day for November is NOT the last Saturday of the month as it normally is. This is due, of course, to Thanksgiving being that weekend. The November menus will be distributed on Saturday, November 22nd before the holiday.

I was a little disappointed with October's regular box. Instead of California vegetables and carrots, we got spinach and corn. Instead of chicken fajitas, we got beef strips. Instead of ribeye steaks, we got sirloin. The "marinara sauce" was a regular can of spaghetti sauce. The Hawaiian punch was a smaller bottle than they specified. I know they reserve the right to substitute but there were too many substitutions this month, especially the steaks -- the same amount of sirloin instead of ribeye is not an equal substitution IMHO.

Well, I don't know that you could say the September senior boxes ever came in, but they added more October Senior Boxes to make up for the difference. Everyone seemed happy. I don't like it when they overextend themselves. Reliability is very important to customers, even if the food is low-cost. It hurt our October numbers, but it didn't kill the spirit. We're looking forward to November!

We had an extra Thanksgiving box left over on Saturday, so I bought and we took it home for a little pre-Thanksgiving meal. Now, I'm not impressed by everything AFM puts out - I've never been a big fan of the Senior Box, for instance - but this was excellent. Everything except the chicken was heat and eat, and it was quite good. Okay, maybe the rolls were average, but the rest was outstanding. We added a pork roast that was already in the crock pot and we dined well.

My mom usually cooks on Thanksgiving Day, but she is in chemo this year so she isn't really up to it. We will be eating one of these AFM meals, and we are adding a chocolate cream pie, a honey ham, and some rolls. It should be great.

They offering the same meal in December, but now they've added a ham for an extra $5. Good move. I doubt we'll get one since we will be visiting the in-laws for Christmas this year, but I highly recommend it.

got a Nov box - some of it was ok but I will probably not order again

1.5 lb. New York Strip Steak (4 x 6 oz.) - not to bad - average amount of fat
3 lb. IQF Split Chicken Breast - very very fatty
2 lb. Baby Back Pork Ribs - look ok - have to find a good recipe
2 lb. Chicken Chunks - very tiny tiny little shreds of pieces that are to be deep fried (I don't
own a deep fryer ) not impressed at all - not even close to chunks
28 oz. Jumbo Charbroiled Beef Patties with Gravy - looks like the schools salisbury steak
-my kids won't eat it
1 lb. Smoked Sausage - looks like sausage
1 lb. Ground Turkey - haven't tried
1 lb. Green Beans - tiny little pieces - 1/4 - 1/2 inch
1 lb. Diced Sweet Potatoes - Didn't get - got broccoli - they were tiny bits of pieces - they
would have to be mixed into something - or you would have to
eat them w/ spoon - too tiny for a fork to pick up - kind of like
they took what fell off during washing and bagged that & sold
10 oz. Peanut Butter - small about 1/2 the size - it was cinderella brand (never heard of it
but it made my DD happy!
15 oz. Cranberry Sauce - can of just what it says
7 oz. Beef-Flavored Rice & Vermicelli - just what it says
20 oz. Shoestring Fries - just what it says
32 oz. 2% Reduced Fat Shelf-Stable Milk - haven't tried yet - little box of milk- DH calls it
military milk - It is liquid
6 oz. Pancake Mix - would probably only make a few pancakes
One Dozen Eggs- eggs are aggs
One Dessert Item - box of generic cookies - not great by themselves but good on ice
cream

:iagree: I was disappointed with the chicken chunks too... I avoid when they say "popcorn chicken" but since this said chunks I thought they'd be like chicken nuggets.

The green beens and sweet potatoes (or brocoli) would be good in soup, along with some corn and other veggies. I cut up the salisbury steak and added it to the soup, along with some rice and it actually came out pretty good. A can of beef broth, a can of vegetable broth, some seasonings and voila!

I was also disappointed in my fruit/veg box, all of my apples were briused (I mean, every SINGLE apple!!), the grapefruits too.

On the other hand, the Thanksgiving box was pretty good, my only "complaint" was I got a blueberry pie (which I hate, but my son LOVES so he was thrilled!!!). It's OK, I didn't need the sweets anyway :)

So, next time I'll skip the fruit/veg box, and avoid chicken chunks.

They have been fairly level since late summer until this month. We are down quite a bit. I assume that is due to the holidays. This is my first December doing this so this may be normal. I just don't know.

I get this complaint occasionally, but it is not the norm. I suspect every batch has some fatty steaks in it just like you'll see at the supermarket. Of course, at the supermarket, you get to select your meat.

Two suggestions: 1. Tell your host site. They need to know when the food quality is not what it should be. 2. When you go through the line next time, ask them not to give you fatty steaks. They should be able to accommodate you.

I ordered a couple different oxes a few months ago and we still have most of it in the freezer. If you are used to eating chicken nuggets and kind of low grade meats and prepared foods, it's ok. My family was in shock.
They tried a bit here and there but really hated it. We eat mostly fresh stuff. I buy in bulk during sales and we really don't buy the frozen convenience foods cause they aren't very good and they are terrible for you. I can't say we are food snobs or health nuts at all but we really felt ripped off by the food. JMHO, you may feel differently. I tried even though i read the bad reviews.

Well, my two complaints are the "chicken nuggets" in the special ended up being tiny "breaded dark meat chunks" which my kids probably won't eat and when I got home I noticed I was missing the 14 lbs of chicken legs. I don't know what I would have done with them anyway but still I paid for it.

I'll probably do it again though. The people there were extremely nice and I saw a $5 sign being put on some boxes, looked like extras. I didn't have any cash on me so I didn't inquire further but will next month. Overall, a good experience. :)

Another complaint - I just noticed the "beef" was really a bloody chicken back. I've never cooked that or eaten that in my life!

Sent an email off but haven't heard anything.

I got some of those "chicken nugget" things a few months back. I tried baking them in the oven (350 degrees) and they were good on top of a salad. I didn't need to add any oil or anything, apparently the coating they put on them contains oil so they actually fried a bit on the baking sheet.

If you or your family eat salads, this is a reasonably healthy way to cook/eat them. I hate having anything go to waste.

I know this gets posted from time to time, but with times being what they are, I thought I would put it out for people who didn't know. Angel Food Network lets you order food for $30.00 each month and is a good value. there are also special boxes you can order each month with fruit/meat/veggies. You find a participating place in your locale, order and it is delivered later that month. No, it isn't name brand stuff for the most part, but it saves us money every month, and I can live with that! You do not have to be "in need" to order, the more people that order, the better deal they can get, so there is no requirements. Anybody can order. http://www.angelfoodministries.com/

This has been posted many times before. It's not a bad reminder. Just keep in mind that (at least in the Southeast) the boxes include alot of processed food and in my area the meats have not always been the best quality (fatty, etc).

Don't get me wrong, it's a great deal and if you are struggling to feed your family, it is better than the alternative. Just don't go into it thinking you will get lots of food choices (it's a fixed menu) and for a normal family it is a grocery supplement and is not enough to feed the family 3 meals a day for the entire month.

beaglelvr
02-04-2009, 12:45 PM
Right, it says one box feeds a family of 4 for a week. I use it as a supplement like you said. Not top shelf quality, but if you are used to store brand quality, that is what it is.

Actually, we have seen a decrease in participation ever since the hurricane. A lot of people got some nice insurance checks so people are kind of flush with cash at the moment.

Honestly, our community has not yet felt the effects of the recession - we are still adding jobs, believe it or not. Still, those that do participate enjoy the service, and our volunteers always have a great time.

Frankly, we didn't pay this much attention, and few of our customers were even aware of it. Maybe it's a big deal in Georgia? I cannot name a single site in our area that has dropped AFM. In fact, another church south of us just joined up.

Personally, I guess I've been around long enough to know in-fighting is as predictable as death and taxes. These folks send us the food at a great price, and our customers pay for it. I don't really see where all of this "money" comes from. Donations, maybe? But I think it has a lot more to do with power. Everyone wants to rule their corner of the universe. Even charitable organizations are susceptible.

I hope they are able to keep providing the service (and I haven't seen anything that would say otherwise.) Some of our customers really depend on this ministry.

SimplyDABulous
03-23-2009, 12:25 PM
I don't know if it's a big deal in Georgia -- I'm in NC, and it was a big deal with a few of the groups (which is why they dropped the program) once word got around.

Some money comes from donations, but the bulk of it comes also from the boxes they sell -- meaning if they hadn't decided to be greedy, maybe they could have kept the box prices lower, offered more items and/or gotten better quality food. Even if it's only $1/box, think of how many boxes they sell over the course of a year -- it adds up. It's not on an AIG scale, but it's still a lot of money that is getting diverted from its intended purpose.

Luckily for me, I've been able to stockpile quite a bit of pantry items, and I've picked up some extra frozen items when they've gone on sale, so I'm actually getting more/better quality food for the same amount as my AFM boxes each month so I haven't used it in awhile. IMHO the quality of the items offered has gone down a lot over the last couple of years, although I am glad to see them trying to offer a variety of boxes/senior meals to cater to more people.

I heard or read about the IRS FBI search. The thing is the search was not on angel food ministries, but on one or two people inside. We are not to judge. If some one did wrong they will have to answer to God. Right know I am not worrying about it. I am going to go ahead and order angel food. I am sorry for the churches that decided to drop AFM. They are the ones that is going to lose out on the blessings. Again they have there reasons and it is not up to me to judge them. I am hoping this will all work out.

If the folks at AFM Headquarters are making money off of the food, they need some serious marketing lessons. There are far easier ways to make money.

As for the host sites that dropped the program, that's certainly their perogative, and I understand. I'm just saying it isn't a big deal with us. There are no perfect people - or organizations for that matter. If some host sites were upset by the negative press, I don't blame them for getting out. I hope they're able to come up with something else just as good.

As for AFM as a whole, March is their 2nd largest volume on record. It looks like they are still making a difference, and I don't see that changing soon. If there are those profiting off of charity, God help 'em. But I'm fairly sure 99+% of the folks are doing this to help out their communities.

Sadly, it seems to go that way. There is always ONE person for which everything goes wrong. I have a lady like that at our site. She orders like 20 items and distributes them at work - and something always gets done wrong. (This last month, someone gave her Easter Dinner Boxes instead of the Assorted Meat Boxes.)

What's the old adage? If you want it done right... I have instructed her to NEVER leave the parking lot until I have had a chance to personally inventory her order. Fundamentally, it isn't an ego thing - well, maybe it is :D - but a lot of it has to do with cradle to grave. I see the stuff when it comes off the truck. I know what it looks like. Many of the workers are not there until the truck is already unloaded so they know little about the specials, substitutions, etc. And the errors always occur as we get started.

So, two suggestions: Arrive a little later. By then, most of the errors are corrected. And insist on a detailed inventory. Based on history, you deserve that.

I went to order my Angel food today. I ordered two signature boxes and a special 1. Has any one else order for April yet? Share if you would like.

Here's a personal ranking:

Signature Box: 8 out of 10. Hard to miss with this. Even if I give away several items, it's a good deal.

Senior Box: 3 out of 10. Easily the worst item on the list. I have all but stopped promoting them. There is too much variety. (Do people still eat mustard greens?) They're too salty, and cooking the entire meal in the microwave leaves me with at least one item that's overcooked.

Assorted Meat Box: 8 out of 10. This is always a crowd favorite. I only rank it 8 because I'm not a big sausage fan.

Meat Combo: 8 out of 10. The ribeyes are great. I like the chicken too, but bacon-wrapped is not (IMO) the best way to serve this.

Steak & Pork: 7 out of 10. I'm not that big on pork, but those KC strips are great.

Chicken Breast: 10 out of 10. I love these things. Great value.

Hamburgers: 8 out of 10. I wish they were a bit leaner, but they taste terrific.

Fresh Fruit: 9 out of 10. The only drawback is that it's hard to eat it all before it spoils.

Valencia Oranges: 9 out of 10. Again, if I can eat 'em before they go bad and there as good as the tangerines, we're in business.

That being said, I'll probably try the Fish & Shrimp Box this month, and my wife wants the oranges. Before I order more than that, I'll have to check the freezer inventory. :bounce:

I seriously think I'm done with this. They called me two days after I picked up and asked if I was missing the 10 lbs of chicken. I emailed them back that I was (you only get a machine at the church) but there was no more follow up from them. They've changed the entrance to be the same one where the Matthew ministry is and it's kind of scary. I'm not being racist here or anything but this church is not in the best area and people would not move to let me by last pick up. When I have to bring my four kids with me for pick ups it's a little disconcerting.

Oh well, I tried! Best of luck to everyone, may your boxes be heavy and correct! :P

Well, there have been a few changes since I last posted. I'll break 'em down:

1. No more purchase restrictions. In the past, you had to buy the Signature Box (or equivalent) to get access to the Specials. That is no more. You can order whatever you want, and as much as you want. (This was a silly requirement. Glad it's gone.)

2. Extended order period. The order period has been extended by 2 more days. While that doesn't sound like much, it is meaningful. People don't like paying for something and waiting 2 weeks to receive it. That gap has now narrowed to less than 10 days. Also, that means the deadline will usually be around mid-month. In our state, many EBT card recipients do not get their funds until mid-month. These extra 2 days will allow them to participate.

3. Quality of the food. Thanks to your feedback (and mine), AFM has put more emphasis on the quality of the food and stopped introducing so many alternate menus. On top of that, they are offering a "picture" menu each month so you can actually see what the food looks like so there is no confusion.

If you are interested, everyone is eligible (and encouraged) to participate. Go to www.angelfoodministries.com and find a host site near you. You can order online at most sites, and you can still save about 50% per purchase.

PM me if you have any questions.

I had an interesting conversation with AFM Headquarters yesterday, and I wanted to share some of it with you.

In early 2009, the food simply hasn't been as good it could have been or should have been. Even at a bargain price, people want good quality food. And that was the main point of our conversation.

In short, AFM now recognizes that they dropped the ball. They know the food was quality was below their previous standards and of course, below your standards. They did not speculate on the reason, but serving 500,000 units of food a month surely has its challenges and food quality is among them. But since the summer of 2009, they have reversed the trend. And we have noticed. Gone are Salisbury steaks and chicken backs and here to stay are beef roasts and chicken breasts. The quality has returned, and for that I thanked them. I also offered our appreciation for all they do. Everyone makes a mistake now and then. But only those who learn from it truly understand what it takes to make a quality product.

If you have not tried AFM lately, I challenge you to do so. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

brenl

It has been a while since I been on the site and see what was posted. I am glad that they are recognize that there was an issue and that they are willing to fix it. Thanks AFM for telling us that. I am still ordering from AFM. I no longer get just a box and a special. I have worked up to ordering like three or four signature boxes and a special. This is my biggest order yet is this month. This month my order is: four signature boxes, sea food box, an after school box, and the chicken breast special. We like the sea food and continue ordering it. If we like the after school box we might continue ordering it. Don't get me wrong if there is a build up of food in freezer I will slack off on ordering a month and use up what we have in the freeze. I have hit a sale or two and didn't order as much, but over all I am happy with the food I get and I still order it. I am one of those that cooks three meals a day. So I am in the process of down sizing what is in my freezer. That way if there is an extra special box I can order extra.

I got my April's order and it looks good. I am in the process of ordering May's food. I want to challenge every one that hasn't ordered lately to try once more. Angel Food has came a long way on their food. Remember you can order as much or as little as you want. If there is a month you really like you can order extra. Angel Food can help stretch your food money or help you save money for some thing special. The meat stays in the freezer for a while. It is not that you have to use every thing you get in one month unless you want.

Well I ordered for June. Order is smaller then May's order. This gives me time to work on using what is in my freezer. Angel Food is doing a contest. If you order one box and have a email address your name is put in a five hundred dollar drawing. Then if you order three boxes or more then your name is put in the drawing a second time. I thought I would mention this just in case if some one was wanting to try Angel Food this would be a little extra.

Next week I get my order. I will be glad to get it. July's menu is up. There is no sea food box. So I guess I will be waiting to get fish when they bring the sea food back or try to buy some once in a while. There is now a bit of blessing special that they are offering. I bought it in May when they first offered it. It is focus around dour meats and sides. I believe they offer a frozen fruit in it also. There is a bag of frozen fruit. The price is I am wanting to say 21 or 22 dollars. So yes the bit of blessing is smaller but a little cheaper also. I am challenging every one to look at it. AFM how is your host sits doing. I am hoping your host site is growing and thriving.

I wish they had a selection for fatties. I'm trying to lose weight and I don't want to have breaded chicken or fish sticks...

Does this really save you money? How much are those items in the store? It seems that they are averages $2.49/lb for all the items, that's pretty expensive sounding to me, anyone care to elaborate on comparison deals?

Once in a while I come across a month that is not worth ordering. Over all it is worth me to go ahead and order. I did order today and my order was 3 signature box and 1 after school box.

September's menu is up and there was some changes. New boxes. It is worth looking into.

Some one asked if I save money on Angel Food. I believe I do save money buying from Angel Food. One thing I like is I pay for it at the first part of the month when I have funds. Then it comes at the end of the month when I am getting tired of what we have in the freezer and when food is getting low. So Angel Food is a God sent for us. Besides that my hubby and daughter loves the steaks. If it wasn't for Angel Food there would be no steaks to cook.

lol, breni are you in here talking to yourself?

I bookmarked this back when I joined SD but there were no close sites. Saw the church I pass at least once a day had a sign up for Angel Ministry and lo and behold they are now a site, as well as another in the next town over. Used to be an hour to the closest site.

Really surprised by the selections, including the seniors/diabetic box. Prices are good especially if you don't have the space/time/energy to cook for yourself and store those supplies.

I think we will be ordering and looking to help out, even though we are not part of the congregations that host these. Its a very needed and worthy cause.

I post on here every once in a while hoping some one would come across the site and learn about Angel Food. I will say once in a while it seems like I am talking to my self. I am glad there is one close to you know purplefdu. You don't have to belong to a church to order angel food from them. I am sure they will love it if you were able to help yo.

I'll jump in to say that we also use angel food. Prices are good, selection is better than I expected.

I had no idea there was a thread on this here. We've tried two different sites and the people at both were extremely nice and friendly. We will order again next month, skipped this month becuase we just didn't need it

I love doing angel food. I think I missed 3 or 4 times of ordering. I missed because the freezers was full. The following month was a little rough right before angel food order came in. So know when the freezer is full my order is smaller. Which is one thing I like is because you can order as little or as much as you want. I started ordering one signature box a month. Then I got where I order 3 or 4 signature boxes and a special. I also love my host site to.

How is the seafood box? I've heard the meats and fruits and veggies are good.

We like the seafood box. They are good. Haven't found every thing we had at the store. I am hopping that they will bring it back. The stuffed flounder that we had in the sea food box taste a lot like the one that Red Lobster serves.

I received this e-mail today:

All,

It is with great heaviness of heart that we report that Angel Food Ministries will not be holding a September distribution. We are working extremely hard and looking forward to our future distributions.

In the meantime, please do not accept September orders. Please refund immediately any money to your customers for orders you have already received. If you require assistance with food stamp refunds, we will have personnel available. All online orders already received are currently being process for full refunds.

For months now, we have incurred rising food and fuel prices and operational costs in the face of declining sales. Nevertheless, we continued to offer food at prices far below the biggest retailers in America. We continued to serve the needy who live in areas that compromised our ability to operate profitably. We continued to reward our church partners and since 1994 have returned some $24 million to them.

As you all know, we have not relied on donations -- less than 1 percent of our revenue comes from donations and approximately 92 percent of our revenues goes directly to our food programs. Over past several months we have cut overhead to the bone, reduced staff, streamlined operations and slashed management compensation.

Our food vendors and trucking contractors have stood by us throughout these trying times and we have sought their counsel on how we will move forward. We thank them for their commitment to helping us help those in need.

Since 1994 we have helped millions save hundreds of millions in food costs. We are in the process of re-examining our business, of restructuring our operations to focus on ways in which we can continue to help our customers and church partners.

We appreciate all of your hard work, dedication and faithfulness to the Lord, your church, your community and to Angel Food Ministries. We will keep in touch with you concerning our progress and will post changes to our website, www.angelfoodministries.com.

And it is confirmed by the Atlanta Journal Constitution: LINK (http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/angel-food-ministries-suspends-1161573.html)
