I was recently told by a friend about this program, so I went with her to see what it was all about. I purchased a box for my 82 year old MIL. The distribution day came and I was not disappointed! If interested you can go to the website and see the menu for that month, the money is due usually by the end of the month for the next month's pickup.
For example:
May's money is due by April 26th, then on May 12 you go to pick up your food. It even includes a pie or cake for dessert! If you know anyone in need, check it out!

The End of Angel Food Ministries?
I received this e-mail today:
All,
It is with great heaviness of heart that we report that Angel Food Ministries will not be holding a September distribution. We are working extremely hard and looking forward to our future distributions.
In the meantime, please do not accept September orders. Please refund immediately any money to your customers for orders you have already received. If you require assistance with food stamp refunds, we will have personnel available. All online orders already received are currently being process for full refunds.
For months now, we have incurred rising food and fuel prices and operational costs in the face of declining sales. Nevertheless, we continued to offer food at prices far below the biggest retailers in America. We continued to serve the needy who live in areas that compromised our ability to operate profitably. We continued to reward our church partners and since 1994 have returned some $24 million to them.
As you all know, we have not relied on donations -- less than 1 percent of our revenue comes from donations and approximately 92 percent of our revenues goes directly to our food programs. Over past several months we have cut overhead to the bone, reduced staff, streamlined operations and slashed management compensation.
Our food vendors and trucking contractors have stood by us throughout these trying times and we have sought their counsel on how we will move forward. We thank them for their commitment to helping us help those in need.
Since 1994 we have helped millions save hundreds of millions in food costs. We are in the process of re-examining our business, of restructuring our operations to focus on ways in which we can continue to help our customers and church partners.
We appreciate all of your hard work, dedication and faithfulness to the Lord, your church, your community and to Angel Food Ministries. We will keep in touch with you concerning our progress and will post changes to our website, www.angelfoodministries.com.
And it is confirmed by the Atlanta Journal Constitution: LINK [ajc.com]

I have done this before and so has my sister. I think this program for those who need it most. That being said, no one every asked me if I was needy. I really liked what was in the box, it was always useful stuff. I will say that it helped me expand my cooking skills because I would get things I wouldn't normally buy - like a bag of beans for soup. If you need it, I recommend it.

This deal is legit. My cousin feeds her family off this deal...
But having said that, I personally don't do it... I think it is a great deal etc but to me I'm taking food from someone who actually needs it.
We all spend enough money on worthless crap toys on this board... Maybe stop and think before you pounce... This isn't like stealing something from Amazon at a ridiculously low price... This is food meant for people who can't afford it.
Stepping down off my soapbox now. ;-)

This is not just for those in need, it's for everybody.
The more boxes they can sell the better, so you're not taking away from someone you are actually helping the cause by purchasing these.

If you are needy you better not be spending gov't money on lobster and steak.

This program is actually for everyone. Before I moved to Ohio, I was doing the research to start this up at my church. The program actually benefits the church, for each box they sell, they get $1.00 for their church/organization. So the more the sell the more money they make for their cause. Please don't think of this program for the poor or needy, though it may have been first intended for this, now it is a money making opportunity for the supporting organization/church.
And your not taking away from anyone, as you have to preorder your box o' food. So when it comes pickup day everyone that wanted a box, will get a box. If you still feel guilty, then help out your organization, buy a box o' food and donate it to your local shelter.

I agree with the ppl saying that this program is for everyone. A church also has to have so many boxes each month to be on the delivery route and not have to send their own truck to go pick up the food. The more boxes ordered the better off everyone is! Most churches will also have a pot set up so that you can leave items from your box that you may not want/use and anyone can then take that for free. Please support this program...it is a good one.

True story, take it for what it's worth.
I was working my way through college at a grocery store that sells live lobsters. A group comes through late one evening to buy four of "our best lobsters" (their words, not mine). Since the meat dept. crew had gone home over an hour prior, I got to go fishing. After retreiving four of the lobsters, I had the pleasure of bagging the order as well. I'll give you three guesses how they paid for the order.
That being said, this surf & turf is shrimp, not lobster. I also believe that everyone should have at least one opportunity to enjoy lobster, but if you're not going to eat the whole lobster (http://www.thelobsterdock.com/howtoeatalobster.htm) you're better off buying the tails alone.

It took me SO long to understand the story accurately. I really thought you had to go out and fish for the lobsters. I thought you would wind up telling us what a great grocery store you had worked at, and how fresh the seafood and produce were or something.

Does the meat come separate from the rest of the food (special frozen container)? Do they give you an idea of the day & time of delivery; or does the truck just drop everything off?
I'm considering this for my church and the pastor will have those questions. I'm worried that with the Florida heat, in just a few minutes those frozen steaks will cook outside!

Yes, the meat is separate, it is in clear plastic bags sealed from the meat place.
In my area for May, the pickup day is May 12th 9am-11-am. If you are in line at that time, you will receive your food, any no shows and the food goes to the local shelter.
The truck does drop off but the day before, at the church I go to it is all ready to go in boxes, you just go and pick-up a box . The additional grill boxes and surf and turf come already boxed up and the steaks are HUGE! There is no limit on anything. I saw people leaving with 5-8 boxes of food! Also, no income limits.
This took place inside the auditorium so it was out of the heat. Hope this helps!

I can't believe that being a pastor's wife I had never heard of this program. The area I live in is not necessarily a poverty stricken area but I can see how this would definitely be a great way to help your community. I will certainly be looking into become a host for this program. Thanks for the information!

Our church has been a distribution center for this since December. It's a great program, and is certainly a blessing to some and just a nice discount for others.
I don't think it's real obvious if someone is paying with food stamps. Different churches run their distributions differently, so if you're thinking of doing it, visit those in your area for ideas. It takes a lot of volunteers, but it is great fun.
We give our buyers a 1/2 window to come pick-up their food, so we can space out when the people come. We distribute from about 9:00 am - 11:00 am on Saturday morning. Our team leaves really early to go get the food, we have breakfast ready for the servants when we they get back.
In addition to the $1 per box, for every 50 boxes, the church gets an additional one to donate.

My brother's church does this every month. I've bought from them once (a $25 fruit assortment), and eaten some of the food at my brother's house. (He's the pastor). I've found the food to be sub-par... definitely good if you can't afford other food, but it's mainly packaged, highly-processed stuff that doesn't taste very good. But I normally eat a lot of healthy, freshly made stuff, so maybe it's a little different in my case. The fruit assortment I got was not good quality at all. When we go to my brother's house to eat and they are grilling chicken, I dread it, because it tastes like plastic chicken from a fast food place instead of fresh chicken from the store. A lot of the other stuff is cheap, generic-type brands you've never heard of in most cases.
Again... not bad if you can't afford something else... but it's really not healthy or tasty from my experience.

Nothing to be embarrassed about if you are disabled and on food stamps. Disability can happen to anyone at any time. I am also disabled and on food stamps, SSI, etc. is it fun, hell no. But it happened through no fault of my own and I refuse to allow anyone make me feel embarrased or guilty about the aid I receive. I would love to work, and have worked part time in the past which resulted in not so fun medical issues.
To those bashing the food stampers who made 'outrageous' purchases. Is their descion on what food items they chose to purchase. Not the wisest purchase perhaps but theirs to make. Just because someone receives public aid does not mean that every member of the public is able to judge them or decide for them. The government is the one who enforces and creates the laws that govern what products can be purchased via food stamps.
That being said, OP good post for those who were not aware of this program.

In for one because the pickup location is less than ten minutes away (grocery stores and places like Sam's Club and Costco are within the same driving distance). Thanks for the heads-up and for folk sharing their own experiences with them!
While this thread may be a repost, it's the first time I've heard of that organization. Might encourage me to try some different, even if 'processed' and possibly so-so, food at a decent deal and it benefits the distributing church. With the food components, maybe run an ingredients search on recipe sites to see what's possible to cook. I usually have at least two ramen noodle packets in a week and I *like* them, so my sense of taste isn't too picky.
Dina
We loooove this group. I've used it for a year now, and they are wonderful. Vey helpful to stock the freezer, and not fo the needy only-- it's for anyone, and actually, the more people that use the program, the ebtter the service is. Hope ya'll like it!
Oh, and they take food stamps and EBT as well... so it can help stretch that further jsut in case. Great for elderly as well, because the pickup is a one place pick up.. no driving around town and shopping all around a store
So there are alot of people who does this? I would check it out since I'm disabled and on food stamps anyway; it's just the embarassement factor is really high for me. At least in the grocery store I can go through the self checkout, and no one has to know that I'm on EBT.
This is absolutely something that shouldn't embarass you- we make quite enough money a year to "sustain" us, etc (though there was a time we were out of work, and we're jsut not now, you enver know how things go) but we use this because the meat is so cheap for the "bonus" boxes. So I'm sure there are folks who are embarassed, but for me, since it's not a place that it matters what income you're making, I don't think anyone should be. I'm jsut thrifty. We do a group pickup for a bunch of folks from church and in the neighborhood near our home- some make under 20,000 a year, some over 70,000, all friends, all helping each other. No big.
And it is "aldi's" quality food- not spectacular, (but the chicken nuggets are good, lol, my kids love them) but not bad. It's not our primary place for food, but when they have great bonuses, it's an excellent choice to be able to make.

mystuff, I respect your opinion, but I can't help but think you are making a overly generalized statements about WIC/welfare....
Where I live anyways, WIC and "welfare" (i.e. food stamps, cash assistance) are 2 separate things, ran by separate agencies, with completely different income requirements.
I agree there needs to be some kind of welfare reform, but making a sweeping statement about getting rid of it all, is not the answer.

I work with mentally ill clients and our organization helps several of them get their orders each month. One of my coworkers ( he's 6'5" and about 300lbs) gets 3-4 boxes a month and says the food is good. It really helps him stretch his food money.
Now, this past holiday season, they offered a coffee bonus package, a cheese and fruit bonus package and a dessert bonus package, along with the chicken and beef bonus packages. I liked that people could get some special things to add to their holiday meals, or even entertain some friends or family.
As far as the food stamps go, our clients DO frequently make poor choices about how to budget (due to cognitive impairment, impulse control problems, low IQ, etc) but they suffer the real life consequences from those choices. Luckily, there are food pantries available to tide them over with donated canned goods, boxes of cereal and powdered milk till the new cycle begins.

Now this is a great box of items! I am so pleased to see this is available in my area. A woman who cleans for me has 3 children at home, no health insurance and just lost her $500 subsidized 2 bedroom apt and had to move to one that costs $1200 a month! I regularly give her hand-me-down cloths and food deals I pcik up extras of via slick deals but this will REALLY help her out next month. her husband has to have surgery and will miss work for three weeks in May. THANKS to the OP. Many slick dealers are in need themselved or help out family and friends in need. This will help my friend get throough the month!:)

Would love to partake, but none within 25 miles of me...and I'm in a highly populated Chicago suburb. What? No needy people here??? Geez. There was a location a couple miles away when I lived in the OC (yes, like the show...Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, etc.)...and there were like NO needy people there (well, except me it seems like)!

Atomic Lush - I don't know if you yourself are in need or not, but Chabad Jewish Services in many major cities run Kosher foodbanks open to everyone who falls within certain guidelines.
Here in los Angeles (in case anyone needs to know) Their group is called Sova Food Bank and is even open on several Sundays a month, making them available to the working poor or those just below the poverty line with jobs. They have several office, one on beverly Blvd, one in the Valley and I think one in los feliz. they are in the phonebook. They give good nutritious food as well as personal care items such as soap, razors, toothpaste etc if you ask for them. They serve working couples, families, the disabled and the homeless. I have directed many disabled people there in the past year and it really makes a difference. Some folks think if they are getting SSDI that they can't go to a food bank - they can and should if they are having trouble.
Anyone living in a major city should look into Chabad Jewish services. they are an Orthodox Jewish community with a high committment to community service. They can really make the difference for some struggling families and it does not matter what faith you are

So there are alot of people who does this? I would check it out since I'm disabled and on food stamps anyway; it's just the embarassement factor is really high for me. At least in the grocery store I can go through the self checkout, and no one has to know that I'm on EBT.

We've been getting Angel Food for a few months, I was doubtful at first and wish we'd started sooner instead of hemming and hawing for a few months about it. It is for anyone who wants it, the more people who order the better prices Angel Food gets on the products included which means more food in the packages.
I wish I could find the link, I've tried, but I read any article about a new church starting to do Angel Food and they were doubtful that it was legit at first and asked how can they do it? It was explained that they contact the manufacturer and ask what the best price they can get on whatever item is times however many units, example a couple of years ago they had a contract with Mrs. Smiths to get pies for $1 each, and orders have tripled since then.
Oh, I was also worried about the religious aspect of it - at our site, not a word of preaching. The only way you know that it's religious is that it's in a church you pick up the food, and the flyer they give you with the next months menu is of course, religious in nature.

This morning was pickup for Angel Food and I was very satisfied with the quantity of products for $26 (yep, $26 and no tax). I cooked up the fries, chicken tenders, and cookie dough** and they were actually kinda good. :-) People there were polite and helpful. Good experience!
Dina
**The location here was giving away *cases* of frozen bread and cookie dough, as much as you wanted. One case is enough for 150-250 cookies. I grabbed a couple (cranberry&walnut and the peanut butter cookie dough) because it was either you grabbed the whole case or you don't take it - no half portions. My arms and hands are sore because the frozen dough is in a square *mound* (~4/6th the size of a midtower PC case, if laid on its side) and you have to package it up into smaller batches on your own.

I just find it sad that the only deals for the needy include foods that are incredibly unhealthy. I realize that it keeps costs down, but their lives will certainly not be long eating fried chicken, mac and cheese, burritos and pepperoni pizza sticks. The healthiest thing on the menu was the mixed veggies and they're undoubtedly canned.
It's still a wonderful program for those who can't afford to feed a family... I just wish they'd pay more attention to health.

I have a quote from the home page...
"Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief to communities throughout the United States."
grocery relief I like that...

My sister has over a dozen locations in her city..
And a really nice grill...

Stepping down off my soapbox now. ;-)
I have no problem with what your saying. But the AFM is a non-profit which means after they pay the employee's, and expenses then they do good with what money is left.
Now if they were a volunteer organization. I could agree 100% with what you've said. But if you don't need it I agree that you shouldn't buy in on this deal.

They are actually doing very well! The lady that coordinates this at the church I go to said she visited the Georgia warehouse where this is distributed and she said it is HUGE and so clean you could eat off the floor. That day they were shipping stuff to California. She said it is run by a father/son team with other helpers and they are very good at what the do and want to be there!

I am in good health. I don`t understand this quote. Even though they may give chicken tenders, or any other type of meat, why not bake them instead or fried them? And this applies to all the food. Also using olive oil instead of corn oil is a plus. Don`t forget about the George foreman grill for those meats.I got my box yesterday and I got see thru bags of vegetables (4 different kinds). None vegetables were canned! The bad thing is that I hate vegetables! I will try to eat the bagged corn mixed with something else.

No church location; the pick-up location was in the 'industrial' area and was more like a partitioned warehouse a local non-profit organization leased. Other than the reorder brochure, there was very little evidence to say the service was from a Christian organization, which I found comfortable. Oh yeah, a mini-trailer of frozen dough that they were emptying out for folk. Plenty.
Though, as I looked at the check off list for April, I noticed they switched the pizza for a bag of taco 'bites' (like those mini eggroll type pizza bites but... taco filling {g}). Looks good and I know the disclaimer is that some parts of the order may have substitutes.

We got the pizza this month but the corn was substituted with carrots which is fine with me. The only subsititution that made me go  was couple of months ago we were supposed to get 1 dozen eggs... apparently massive amounts got broken, and the ended up substituting 3 boxes containing two slices of pie for the eggs. That was a big WTF moment, but usually the substitutions are similar items.

So do you have to pay the 25 dollars before you go to pick it up or how does that work?
Yes, each location the timing is different but here they generally take the orders and money through like the 2nd weekend of the month, and then the 4th Saturday is when the pickup is. You have to order (and pay) beforehand.
Miss the pickup, you won't get a refund or credit -- they donate your box to a food bank or a similar place. You also can't decide to add another box or special at the time of pickup. They only get what they've collected money for, no extras.
Most of the distribution sites have their own websites with the dates listed so you know when they take orders and schedule pickups.

My husband and I are in college, and we're trying to cut our budget to the bone... including food! I found this site a couple weeks ago and have been thinking about doing it this month. THanks to the info I found in this thread, we're gonna try it!
Even sadder is that these kinds of foods actually cost more. If you go compare food at the grocery store, raw healthy ingredients are amonst the cheapest foods. Prepared items, the most expensive.
As someone who ALWAYS cooks everything from scratch, I can say that this is more food than you can get for $25 at the supermarket, even if you cook it up yourself.

It seems a lot of people think this is a charity program for the needy but it's NOT - it's for everyone. I don't know why there is so much misunderstanding about it. I've known about it for awhile but honestly I get cheaper food buying in bulk at Sams club / couponing / buying sale items at the grocery store. For example, one of the specials for July is 8lb of hamburger patties for $17 = $2.13/lb. I can get 6 lbs ground sirloin patties at Sams for $12.88. That's $2.14/lb. Ground beef patties at Sams are 10 lbs for $15.88, or $1.58/lb.

For people who dont have Sam's club etc near them and dont want to buy bulk because of no space(college students), this is a great program. I have done it for almost 2 years. And I am the coupon/on sale queen among my friends and teach them how to do it.
Unfortunately we were told in NY/NJ the program has been suspended for a few months. I guess due to transportation problems (gas, traffic in summer) since our last shipment was delayed a week. Frozen and canned food can travel from Atlanta to us but fresh (besides oranges and apples) would be a mess. Sorry vegetarians.

I agree. That's the reason I am so happy that Angel Food now includes fresh ingredients as well, this month eggs and onions, next month milk and potatoes.
I have been using Angel Food for about 5 months now and I can say that it is cheaper than going to the grocery store. I used to go to several grocery stores to find the deals, now I have one trip a month to pick up my box and then go to one grocery store once a week to pick up veggies, fruit, milk and bread. Everything else, meat, rice, frozen veggies etc, cookies, I get in my Angel Food box. Saves on gas, time and money. I also save some of the food items for later, such as the bean soup, they have a good shelf life and will taste much better in the fall than in a 95o North Carolina summer.
I admit, the food is not the healthiest, but I hope they keep including the fresh products and the multiple bags of frozen veggies - makes up for the popcorn chicken.

What I liked about this program when I was using it was that I often got a few items I wouldn't normally buy and thus was somewhat forced into trying new things. It has kind of a fun grab-bag quality to it on top of being relatively cheap. Also something to note that you might not consider by just looking at the list of items is that they don't tend to stretch for the entire month so unless you can stomach eating the same few things and buying multiple boxes you'll probably need to diversify, which is where coupon cutting and sale shopping can help suppliment.

Yep, the food for September was a lot, and this is the first time in 6 months that when I got there (ALWAYS at the same time 10:00 a.m.), there was no parking, and the people in charge of this program were still filling orders.
The boxes were bigger this time,, ooh and heavier...
forgot to say I`m in college, too, and every little bit helps....those college books are very expensive!

After reading all 7 pages of posts here at SD about the Angel Food Ministries Food Program I went to their internet site. Their Home Page reads: the local ministries distribute this food on a monthly program TO THOSE IN NEED. In all the posts here at SD I was starting to get the idea that buying a monthly food package was advantageous to both Angel Food Ministries & the local churches that distribute the food. Now, I'm not so sure of that. If the program is in fact, designed for those in need, then I would feel guilty being a monthly participant, as fortunately, I am not in need at this time. I would like to hear from someone from the head organization, or one of the local distributing churches, and see what their opinions are about this. I just don't want to join a program that is designed for the actual needy knowing that I don't fall into that category.

When I checked just now, the regular price is $30, not $25. I am in CA and I was going to order an October box for one of my best friends. I do all I can for her, but with 3 kids, I figured food should be on the top of my list of things to provide. They claim none near us though, so I'll have to talk to my church about starting one. The food places I know about humiliate those who need it. I called around for her once and they really put you through a lot just to get some food. It's ridiculous. When you're in the position of needing a food bank, they don't need to add insult to injury...

heres what i found also-
Churches that participate in Angel Food Ministries benefit in many ways:
Gives church members hands-on experience and training with rewarding service to others.
Provides food for those that desperately need it, as well as help offsite food costs for middle class families who also struggle with debt and other financial pressures -- everyone qualifies.

I haven't used this program but am sending this info to my niece in another state. I did go look at the FAQs to see just what the requirements are...
Who qualifies?
Everyone, there are no applications or qualifications to order Angel Food.

I have done a program like this run by the Catholic church, its called SHARE....they told me that the more people that use them the better, because the larger the order is the better the price the group gets. Hope that helps, you could buy it and then give some to another person who could use the food.

I do this for my family every month & love it...We are far from needy, but as a family of four with a teenager...If I didn't do this to help with groceries, we would end up in the poor house :) Our Church tells everyone IT IS NOT for the Needy...There is NO income requirements & the more that do it, the better is it for the Church itself! The food is GREAT (almost all name brands) & really comes in handy. On distibution days there are always tons of people picking up food, from those who obviously need it, to families like mine, even those people in their big Lexus', who obviously just like deals. Our Church even does a lot of their bake sale/ fundraiser type activities on distribution day to make extra money since they know there is a large crowd of non attenders. Put the "I'm taking away food from those in need" mindset away & get a on this deal. It benefits anyone who wants to try it! You can PM me if you have any questions about it..Like I said, I do it every month & have been for about a year now!

The church that is 500 feet from my front door started doing it last month. Got my first order this weekend, and am very impressed by the amount of stuff.
Most of it is pretty good stuff: vacuum sealed steaks and chicken, some albertsons frozen dinners, bag of onions, skim milk cartons and juice cartons, muffin mix, and other odds and ends. some oddballs like individually wrapped bread slices and restaurant size packets of margerine. But am very happy with the whole thing. I will definitely hit this every month.

A study just came out showing that most limited income people don't really care about eating healthy but go more for the instantaneous gratification of taste.
Eating healthy is expensive and if you don't have the money it is hard to do. Especially if you have a family to feed. Cheap comfort food is filling.

I agree. It is hard enough to have to be on aid. I would never criticize anyone for trying to have a nice meal. That lobster dinner might have been the only one they ever had. Just because you are in need of help does not mean you should not have a little treat every once in a while.
We have a lot of money pulled out in taxes that goes to coverage of state and government aid so I look at it like I am supporting them in a way. I don't mind if they treat themselves every once in a while it is good for the spirit.

I don't understand the references to Aldi quality. Aldi in America is actually owned by a very upscale organic food chain. The Aldi's in my neighborhood are very upscale.

Here is October's menu:
(1) 3 lbs. Breaded Frying Chicken
(1) 2 lbs. Salisbury Steak Entree w/ Gravy
(1) 24.5 oz. Supreme Pizza
(1) 2 lb. Chicken Chunks
(1) 24 oz. Pork Roast
(1) 16 oz. Chicken Breast Fajitas
(1) 12 ct. Corn Tortilla
(1) 15 oz. Pork & Beans(4) 5 oz. Ribeye Steaks
(1) 16 oz. Fresh Carrots
(1) 24 oz. Homestyle Hashbrowns
(1) 16 oz. Corn
(1) 16 oz. Bean Soup Mix
(1) 5.5 oz. Pancake Mix
(1) 7.5 oz. Mac & Cheese
(1) 7 oz. Lasagna Dinner
(1) Dessert Item
I don't think the red items are unhealthy and my favor skinny and active children will love the green items-the extra steaks, etc. are great deals too-we usually have steak once a week and if these are individually frozen, they'll stay in the chest freezer for months. My husband will eat the salisbury steak when we don't feel like cooking. Just saw that one just opened in CT-I'll drive 30 minutes and plan an outing with the kids when we pick up.

YOU determine if you're in need. Meaning, if it helps you save a few bucks, or it allows you to try a few items that you normally wouldn't have purchased, then you're considered "in need". It doesn't mean that you have to be low income, or poor, or on food stamps, or welfare, or WIC, or medicaid, etc. It just asks if you have a need - any need.

How do you place your order?

http://www.angelfoodministries.com/hosts.asp
Click on your state, and then find a local church (sometimes its not a church, but it usually is). Contact them. You pay for it 2 weeks in advance, usually, then come back on the pick up day (Saturday) morning, with a large cardboard box, and pick your stuff up.
Understand that some of the food items are generic, while others are name brand. Understand that some are just TV dinners. For example, the mac and cheese for October is probably generic "Kraft" and the salisbury steak is probably the family size frozen salisbury steak dinners.
I used it in August and was pleased. I don't believe that it is worth $70, especially for SDers who use coupons, but it is certainly worth at least $50, and allowed me to try things that I wouldn't have tried. Its definitely a good deal.
I have used this a few times since discovering it thanks to SD and I consider it another option for my shopping choices and it is nearly like having personnel I just purchase
One of each of the packages offered and my freezer is full.

Thanks for the post OP. But I find that if we deviated from our budget to buy this stuff, it really wouldn't save us money... not much on there that we would buy, and not much savings off retail. For instance, I never spend more than $2/lb on meat, and the menus typically break down to a higher price per pound than that. Sure, it's steaks or ready-to-fry chickens...but if I usually buy less expensive cuts, why pay more?
...and we're under 110% of the poverty line. Use a pricebook and stick to a low-cost meal plan and you can save more than using a program like this.
Of course, if you regularly buy rib eye stakes, frying chickens, and other brand-name item listed on the Angel Food Menus... then it might be a savings to you, regardless of income level (since as they point out, the food is donated and money collected is used for the poor, a la Salvation Army Stores and sorta like Goodwill.
LOL, goodwill is a good analogy one a certain level. I've deen Target products from clearances end up in Goodwill stores at higher prices than Target had them on Clearance for ...just goes to show that everything you find in a discount outlet is not necessarily a good deal.
Just my perspective.

Lessseee... October Menu:
(4) 5 oz. Ribeye Steaks (at $2/lb, that's $2.50)
(1) 3 lbs. Breaded Frying Chicken (I bought boneless chicken for $1.70/lb.. so at that price this is worth $5.10)
(1) 2 lbs. Salisbury Steak Entree w/ Gravy (we don't buy TV dinners, but I could get the same for about $3 for 2 1-lb dinners)
(1) 24.5 oz. Supreme Pizza (wouldn't buy, but about $5-6)
(1) 2 lb. Chicken Chunks (~$4 for nuggets from Aldis)
(1) 24 oz. Pork Roast (pork is cheap... at $1.50/lb this comes to $2.25)
(1) 16 oz. Chicken Breast Fajitas (boneless chicken strips...$1.70)
(1) 12 ct. Corn Tortilla ($.79 @ aldi's)
(1) 15 oz. Pork & Beans (<$1)
(1) 16 oz. Fresh Carrots (Free on WIC, otherwise <$1 at produce junction)
(1) 24 oz. Homestyle Hashbrowns ($1 or so...or get 5lb of potatoes for $1 at produce junction and make the 24 oz worth, what, $.30?)
(1) 16 oz. Corn ($.50)
(1) 16 oz. Bean Soup Mix ($1 or less, free on WIC)
(1) 5.5 oz. Pancake Mix ($2? Maybe?)
(1) 7.5 oz. Mac & Cheese ($.60)
(1) 7 oz. Lasagna Dinner (don't buy, but $1-1.50)
(1) Dessert Item (wildcard... don't buy many of these but I've seen pies at Acme for $3...)
So this works out to just less than what I would pay at the store, but include a lot of stuff I wouldn't buy anyway.
And the meat options:
Meat Combo Box - $18.00 ($4.50/lb)
(4 8-oz. T-Bones, 2 lb. Ribeye Roast)
OCTOBER SPECIAL #2
Strip Steak Special - $18.00 (also $4.50/lb)
(4 8-oz. K.C. Strip Steaks, 4 8-oz. New York Strip Steaks)
Shifferbrains 9:13 AM
You can freeze this stuff so it will last if it’s frozen
You will need to do the math and figure out your meals
For your family of eight.
There will always be a better price and a better deal if you
Search but part of this is the convince and the money from
Your purchase going to a good cause and yet getting a good deal.
In some areas the price is 30.00 rather then 25.00 for the primary box

I have looked into this and I think if the menus are things that you would buy normally, the price is very good (comparable to sale w/ coupon prices). However, we stay away from processed foods and most meat, so once you take that stuff out, it isn't a very good deal for us. If you could find a friend who would swap the stuff your family likes for the stuff their family likes, it could work quite well, and save lots of time at the grocery store!

Wow! Aren't you intelligent? -NOT-
It's better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt.
That said... Can anyone tell me how many boxes I would need to feed a family of 8 and how long does the stuff usually last?
Their website says one box is enough to supplement a family of four for a week.
Oh, and can someone tell me where they are getting Ribeye steaks for $2 a pound? Around here its at least $5, and that's on sale. I'm VERY picky about price, I will rarely pay over $2 a pound for meat. So if someone has a place to get beef steaks for $2 a pound, I'd like to know about it!

some of you are talking about the price per pound and that its NOT a good deal.. i have to disagree and say it depends on where you live..
here in south FL, meat is expensive, and im not just talking about ribeyes,
basic bone in chicken breast or chop meat can run you 2.99 + a pound when its not on sale
bone in pork chops at publix are over 3.00 a lb, even cheap brand hot dogs are 2.99 a pack..
so this will be perfect for a family i know...
ok jsut had to say my 2 cents:D

has anyone done this in the nyc area? looks like there's only one location in manhattan (none in queens or brooklyn), which is hard to imagine myself bringing a big box to pick it all up and then lugging it on the train/subway. even aside from that- that church's website mentions angel food distribution in new brunswick!!! (which is in nj) so i'm curious about anyone else's experience.... thanks!
ps not going into the political vein, but i am a bit uncomfortable with supporting a church. i'm currently raising money for food bank of NYC though so this could be in the same vein- i may wind up donating the box of food to them anyway. will have to see how this works. thanks OP!

You can get sick off of the meat in the supermarket too.. TOPPS recalled their beef from stores a few weeks ago.. it happens. I doubt it means you'll stop buying meat from the supermarket though.
oh and for those feeling weird about trying this.. its not just for 'poor' people... in fact, I believe they want as many people as are willing to order, to order.. more people buying = more companies/sponsors they can get to 'sign on'..
I haven't tried this in awhile.. back when I did they were boxing up a lot of chicken products.. and I was chickened out ( ) so I'm taking a break.. the food is good though, tried a few products I probably never would have too.. never got sick on the food, nor anyone I know (dozens of families).. on the contrary, it was all pretty yummy :yummy:

I was recently told by a friend about this program, so I went with her to see what it was all about. I purchased a box for my 82 year old MIL. The distribution day came and I was not disappointed! If interested you can go to the website and see the menu for that month, the money is due usually by the end of the month for the next month's pickup.
For example:
May's money is due by April 26th, then on May 12 you go to pick up your food. It even includes a pie or cake for dessert! If you know anyone in need, check it out!

This is actually right down the road from me and its not for needy !! it's for anyone who wants to get a good deal on groceries. That being said if you prefer alot of organic food or your kinda of picky about what you eat dont do it. I have done it for my family many times but you do often get stuck with some strange food that you would never purchase. I usually just donate what we dont want to the local food bank.

However, since it's a volunteer-driven activty, you do have to be prepared to pickup your food order within the prescribed window of time. Around here's that's 1-1/2 to 2 hours. The date/time for the monthly pickup is very clearly stated and if you don't make it, your box is given to a needy family or food bank or something. (No refund.)
They are very clear about this on the websites, and it's only fair. They can't just hang around with perishable food all day.

I forgot to mention yesterday that the cut of dates for the year 2008 has changed. The cut of dates are after the first now. which I am excited about. The church I go through to get my angel food through usually has a cut off the friday before the place the orders that Monday. which gives me one month that I will have to order the month before.

beingguided this is what you do. Go to www.angelfoodministries.comm/hostsite then click on the state you live in. Go to the page to find a host site near you. Some times there is phone number where you can get hold of the host site or least the name of the church. if that address don't help you can usually do www.angelfoodministres.comm and you can get to the host site and to the menu.

We fell in love with Aldi's, too and do more shopping there than ordering Angel Food, just because Aldi is available 7 days a week and I can buy what I want/need/like vs what's included in the box that month.
That being said, Angel Food (again) is NOT for the "needy".. it's for the THRIFTY! One church put it this way "If you eat, you qualify". Yes, it's helpful to the needy or the "we make too much for assistance but not enough to live comfortably".. here in MI, many families are falling into one of those two categories. Our economy SUCKS here.
It DOES benefit the needy because as someone else said, the church gets $1/box for their benevolence fund and they likely use that money to buy more of the AF's boxes. It helps everyone!
We've ordered a couple of times, the food is pretty good.

When I've ordered from in the past I can only recall one time every having anything substituted and I was for something similar. I.E. 1lb hamburger was substituted for 1lb of pre-pattied hamburgers.

I can't seem to see what they have to offer you for $30 a month but let me say I don't really understand why one should pay. The reason I say this is that I've personally been the route of the food banks and whatso to get basic necessities when I was in college. I did not pay a cent to the organizations to get food/diapers/ sometimes transportation passes and electric assistance( I wasnt around when this was available).
For those in CA you can use the RAINBOW Book found in the public library which has a list of all the organizations that can assist you. There was enough food for my son and I. Nowadays I shop CVS and have things taken care of there and yes food included.
Thanks for your advice it depends on ones needs and the amount of time you want to invest I have received some great deals both at CVS and weekly super market sales
As well this is just another resource that I find useful in the many ways there are
To fill up the freezer.

I have actually been on the committee of my church for AFM. When we first started we were begging church members to sign up to get our volume up. So it is definitely OK for everyone to buy a box.
The problem with this is that people need to pay about 3 weeks in advance. And make two trips to the church. And the food leans pretty heavily on prepackaged foods like frozen popcorn chicken and Banquet meals. I usually just turn down the frozen fried potatoes, Banquet dinners, and anything else I won't use. They keep it for donations. That said, with my thrifty ways, it is about a break even deal so I probably would rather just buy my own variety for about the same price. For people who don't coupon and sale shop like the people on this website, it is a great deal.
I do buy one anyway because it really helps the church for me to buy one. Our church uses the money to provide boxes for people who otherwise couldn't. There are sales competitions between the churches and the volume discount thing mentioned above.

I know it has been said, but I want everyone to be crystal clear on this:
ANYONE can order through AFM. The more that is ordered, the bigger the discounts since they are buying in bulk. Meanwhile, the churches and agencies dispensing AFM get money for each box they sell as a way of offsetting their costs. THERE IS NOT A LIMITED SUPPLY OF FOOD! As far as I know, every order gets filled ( and I have asked...)

Too bad the food is not remotely Kosher.
That is because this program is being managed by the "church". The "church" is under the impression at this point in time that it is not supposed to follow Torah, even though Jesus did.

Showed the menu for Jan. to the wife, and she said you can select what you want for the same price at Aldi's. Also said YMMV as far as meat is concerned.
I think the best part of this is that people may start to lose weight rather than spending their welfare checks and food stamps at McDonalds and KFC. Some may discover they have a kitchen as well. ;)

This is a wonderful program. While many posters are right, you may be able to coupon, shop at Aldi or find similiar items elsewhere, this program helps those who are not able to do those things easily.
My MIL is legally blind and disabled. She loves to do her own shopping, but she realizes it takes her more time than she has energy to do. The AFM food box has proven to be quite helpful for her. Since she cannot she coupons and ad papers to price match, this option doesn't help her. Aldi doesn't have available all the items she needs, so this makes her shopping a multiple store trip that she doesn't have the energy do complete.
For 2 people, a $30 box and an add on fills the freezer leaving her the time and energy to something else she enjoys - BINGO! LOL
But seriously, I did find the products a good quality. But having a house of picky eaters, we also could not use everything provided making the deal a little less of a deal. I have found that I can find a menu that works for us 4-5 times a year and the add on are usually pretty good.
Good Luck to all that have this program nearby. Just give it a try and decide for yourself if it is a good deal for you.

Actually, you're wrong. As posted MANY times in this thread, the offer is for those struggling as well as those who "appreciate discount groceries." The Church also benefits from the sale of these boxes so the more people that buy the better. Read the whole thread before you make a comment like that.

I'm sure that is the exception and not the norm. If that happened all the time the program would not exist.

Oh, I was also worried about the religious aspect of it - at our site, not a word of preaching. The only way you know that it's religious is that it's in a church you pick up the food, and the flyer they give you with the next months menu is of course, religious in nature.
As if religion were a bad thing. These people are performing a good service for the community because of their religion.

I and my parents ordered one time. Got food that had expired, food that was open, and substitutes that weren't even close to what was supposed to be in the box(as an example if it had been a pound of chicken we got a small jar of peanut butter-that's not exact but just an example of how "off" the sub was).
Generic "crap" that wasn't edible was the rest of the stuff in the box. Bread that was hard as a hockey puck.
I'm glad for all that get good food, but it was a major waste of money.

I'm curious if anyone that had quality issues contacted them and asked about it? They seem adamant that the products are fresh.
Where does the food come from?
Our food is “restaurant grade” meats, frozen vegetables, fruits, dairy products, etc. which we acquire through our involvement with only the best producers/vendors of high quality, “name brand” foods. Never “seconds” or “day old” type products are involved.

I have been happy with the food that we receive from angel food ministries. I order the frozen meal box the first time they had it and wasn't happy with it. I thought that each meal was for the whole family and not a single food. The description wasn't clear. I didn't email them about it. other wise I am happy with the food we get. If there is something that we do get in the box that we don't eat like the ground turkey I will pass it on to my brother. We have been doing this for about 2 years now. I have this month order and plan on ordering next months to.
I started to answer one question in this thread, but I couldn't stop myself from answering others. Here's some Q& A on Angel Food Ministries:
Q: Where does the food come from and how can they sell it at such a low price?
A: I do not know where the food comes from, specifically, but I did ask how they get it to cheap. It's really pretty simple: volume and overhead. This ministry is so huge that they order more food each month than Wal-Mart, and they have very little overhead. I do not know if they have a deal with the trucking company, but the distribution is run by volunteers and, therefore, cost-free.
Q: I'm not fond of churches. What's with the religious connection?
A: Take heart that more churches are doing more of this kind of thing. For too long, churches have preached a lot of "help your fellow man" without actually doing it. You should be encouraged that many are seeing the light and getting back to "love your neighbor." So, before you judge, you might give these guys a try. Everyone deserves a second chance.
Q: Do the churches make any money off of this?
A: Yes, they get a kickback - a whopping $1 per box. If this were a way to increase church revenue, it would be a lousy one. I haven't heard a single person tell me this is a financial windfall for their church.
Q: If I get some bad food, is there anything I can do about it?
A: If you do get poor quality food, I recommend you tell someone about it. The churches need to know this. Each shipment comes with a few duds, In my experience, the volunteers try to take that home. (Most recently, they ran out of rice so the volunteers agreed to give their rice to the other participants.) If you find the dud after you get home, just tell them on your next trip. I'm sure they will double-check your box. Hey, they may even throw in something extra. ;)
Q: What about...?
A: This reply is getting far too long. Drop me a private message if you have more questions.
February will be our first month as a host site. If you live south of Baton Rouge, PM me and feel free to join in! :D

March Distribution Day is Saturday (in my region anyway)!
By the way, we had a major webcast this week. Look for AFM to go with on-line ordering in the next few months. Naturally, they will be taking debit and credit cards. In addition, they are issuing kiosks to some locations so we can do that on-site (inlcuding the electronic food stamp cards.) Welcome to the 21st Century, AFM!
As soon as it's ready, I'll be back with an update. :-)

scatpack: sorry I should of proof read better. It should of read get hold of the host site. the host site is a church that you will go to and order and pick up your order. The angel food ministries web sit will have a list of host site/ churches that you can pick from. Also the host site are broke up into states.
Online ordering is coming soon; however, you will always need to go to a host site to pick up the food. PM me if you have further questions.
For those of you who may have questions about AFM, here is a set of FAQ from a host site director that should answer most of your questions:
 Who qualifies for this "ministry"?
Everyone who eats. By paying $30, you are purchasing the food the same as if you went to Kroger.
:look: How do I find a distribution site in my area?
Go to the web site (www.angelfoodministries.com) and look for a host site near you. Use the zip code function. Otherwise, you end up with a statewide listing, and you might miss a location in some small town near you. There should be contact information there for the host site. If not, call AFM's hotline (1-800-FOOD-MINISTRY) to get more contact information. Some sites do not man the telephones around the clock so you may need to contact the site director. The host sites run the gammit from churches of all denominations to civic organizations
Where can I find out what's for sale this month?
Same place: www.angelfoodministries.com. Each month's menu usually comes up around the 15th of the previous month. Note that they also provide the menu in Spanish. I will post the English version here each month as it becomes available.
:bounce: When do I place an order?
Each host site has one or several time slots when they take orders. Usually, it is the week prior to the ordering deadline (about 10 days before distribution.) At our site, for example, we take orders from 11:00 am - 7:00 pm on Thursday and on Monday just prior to the deadline. Even if you can't make the scheduled hours, the host site will probably do what they can to find a time that works for you. Online ordering is coming soon!
When and how do I pay for the food?
When you place an order, you pay for it. Most site takes cash, money orders, and food stamps. We should start taking credit and debit cards later this year, but we're not set up for it yet. Some sites are now taking orders online through the AFM website. Most sites frown on checks for obvious reasons.
When and how do I pick up my food?
Depending on your location, there is then a Saturday designated "Distribution Day" when you pick up the food. When you arrive, you bring a box or cooler with you and the people usually fill it assembly-line style. At some locations, you walk in. At others, you drive in. I have heard of a few that deliver, but that is VERY rare. You can usually get in and out in 10 minutes or less. Also, you should be able to place an order for the next month and save yourself a trip.
 Is the food any good?
The food is quality food. The "specials" , in particular, include some terrific packs of steaks. Of course, the downside is that you must accept the set menu. But I find even if I eat what I like and give the rest away, I save a substantial amount of money. Some of the food could be healthier. It's not that it horribly fatty; it's just that it's usually standard stuff so those used to "reduced fat" or "extra lean" will need to watch their portions. Also, the brand names may be a bit unusual. This is just because most brand names are regional - the food is still good quality.
 Do I really save money doing this?
In January, one of the sites reported going to the local Wal-Mart and tried to duplicate the $30 box of food and spent $77 doing so. That doesn't include the time it took to check-out at Wal-Mart. (Don't get me started.)
How do they do this?
Volume. They order roughly 500,000 units a month.
Goverment. AFM is a faith-based ministry.
Volunteers. That means no store front and no overhead.
 Who are these people?
AFM started this from Joseph & Linda Wingo's back porch in Monroe, Georgia in 1994. After reviewing much of the training materials and working with the organization, I can say these really are just some common, small-town folks who came up with a fabulous idea.
 What's the catch?
I haven't yet found one. The host sites get $1 for each box/special they sell, but that's not going to make anyone rich. That usually covers gasoline, promotion, and doughnuts for the volunteers. I suppose some churches may add you to the mailing list or thump you with a Bible, but that has not been my experience. Usually, everyone goes home happy. It has a true community feel to it kind of like a throwback to the days when we had neighborhood barbecues.
 Can I buy food for others?
Sure. If you know anyone who could use some food - illness, new baby, job loss, whatever - this is a great way to help them out. If you went to the store, you'd waste an hour and spend twice as much. A large portion of what we distribute goes to people who are giving it to someone else.
:bulb: Anything else?
If you think of something, send me a PM and I'll add it to the FAQ. Also, you will find some opinions in this thread:

I just cooked and ate my April meatloaf last night and it was MMM-MMM! I'm not usually a mystery meatloaf kinda guy but I think I really liked it! I have done this the past two months and it has saved me twice what I have spent. More money for SD!
My local organization that takes orders is a church; the orders can be placed online, and payed for via paypal, and the distributon is at a local elementary school. This is very good since I would probably burst into flames if I ever set foot inside a church. :D
I'd like to do this (as a host site) but am not affiliated with a church. Does anyone go to a host site that is not a church? What kind of organizations qualify?
There are several organizations that are not affiliated with a church. I have seen some community organizations (e. g., Lion's Club & 4-H) and police juries that do this. However, AFM approves all host sites so I cannot tell you exactly how they approve host sites.
The application for becoming a host site is rather painless. There is a $50 application fee, but that is refunded if your application is rejected.

For those of you concerned about Angel Food being associated with a church; don't be. I have participated in the program where the pick-up site is a church and there is no one there pushing church on you. I am a Christian, though, so it wouldn't bother me anyway - after all it is called angelfoodMINISTRIES!
I just got an e-mail from AFM Headquarters to this effect:
"It has come to our attention that a rumor is currently circulating that Angel Food is planning to raise its box price to $40 (or something to this effect). Please be aware that this is completely untrue..."
So, if you hear such a rumor, know that it is false. Now, back to your regular SD programming...

Aprils food rocked, I hadn't ordered for a few months, and in that small amouunt of time, the quality improved greatly. Meatloaf, fajita steak and valencia oranges were awesome...
Looking forward to picking up May's order and ordering for June.
I did a little detective work last week and discovered that AFM has implemented on-line ordering for some states (e. g., Virginia.) That's good as it should save people at least one trip a month to the host site.
You simply go to the main web site and look for a site near your zip code. You will likely get several listings. Click the "More" button next to the site where you want to pickup your food. There, you should find a button that says "Order Online". (If you find no such button, then that site is not yet setup for online ordering.) I think you can probably figure it out from there. Note that you can only order online if you pay by credit or debit card. Cash, checks, and food stamps must still be processed at the host site.
After a phone call, I was told that Tennessee will add this feature for the July menu. They could not project a start time for my state, but it will likely move quickly once implemented at some of these pilot locations.

While we're at it, I will put in a plug for volunteering to help out with this. If you're looking to give something back or you have a teenager with a lot of summer idle time, contact the host site. It has become quite a social event in our community.
