Problems

Problem:
Your firefox froze and when you rerun it and it ask you to create new profile.
Do not create one. Just go to task manger and force kill firefox.exe

If you accidentally create a new profile and want to get your old profile back, here is how.
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/images/profilemanager3.png
1. Close Firefox completely (select File > Exit from the main menu of Firefox).
2. Select Start > Run... from the Windows Start menu.
3. Enter firefox.exe -profilemanager and press OK
4. Pick your original profile.
5. Make sure it is the correct one then repeat step 1-3 delete the 'new' profile that you don't want, BE VERY SURE it's the RIGHT ONE

Detail Firefox profile Info Here (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile)

If you run into firefox problem and can't be fix with uninstall/reinstall. It's probably cause by corrupt profile.
Here is what you do to fresh install Firefox

Before you do anything turn on show hidden files and folders or else you won't be able to see anything
0. Explorer -> Folder Options -> View -> Hiden files and folders -> Show hidden files and folders

Profile Location
For WinNT/2k/XP:
<drive letter>:\documents and settings\<user name>\Application Data\<Firebird or Mozilla\Firefox>\<random generated>
For Win9X:
<Drive Letter>:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<Profile name>\
Backup you profile, most likely just bookmark. Copy bookmark to another directory and then copy it back after fresh install.
Delete your profile
Reinstall Firefox
This will solve 99.9% of your problem.

Extension
Run your firefox in Safe Mode.
If you don't have Safe Mode shortcut just add -safe-mode flag at the end, firefox.exe -safe-mode
When started in Safe Mode all extensions are disabled and the Default theme is used. Disable the Extension/Theme that is causing trouble and then start normally.

question about adblock. for school we use a program called webct where it shows us equations. adblock puts the little box saying i can block it like it does for banner ads. how can i get rid of the box temporarily?

The only way I know you can do this is to go to tools --> adblock --> preferences, and uncheck the 'Enable Adblcok' radio button. This does turn off all adblock functionality, however. I use WebCT also for school, and I don't turn off adblock. Why do you need to hide the adblock tab?

wow, missed this awhile ago. the adblock image covers something important (equation i think) occasionally. that's the only reason i'd want to get rid of it.

How do I get firefox to clear out the auto-complete? For instance, I type in a Card # or zip that I will only use once and now it appears every time I start entering a different number or username or zip or whatever. If I could just eliminate select ones, that would be even better (wishful thinking, I know).

Edit: Think I found the solution in the Google history thread with Drio's response. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Two things I haven't been able to figure out:

1) In the quicklinks for your bookmarks, how can you change the icon associated with the link (you know, the favicon)? There's no option to do this.

2) I STILL can't figure out how the "flexible space" works in adding it to your toolbar. To get a bigger space, I keep adding the standard spaces. Adding the flex space just gives me a single line that I can't do anything with.

Any help is appreciated. :) TIA

1) In the quicklinks for your bookmarks, how can you change the icon associated with the link (you know, the favicon)? There's no option to do this.
The icons come from the site that you have bookmarked. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but they are culled from the site when you visit it, and then stored in a file in your profile.

2) I STILL can't figure out how the "flexible space" works in adding it to your toolbar. To get a bigger space, I keep adding the standard spaces. Adding the flex space just gives me a single line that I can't do anything with.
The flexible space is used to separate elements from each side of the screen. An example of flexible space is the space between the word "Help" and the Firefox homepage notifier on the right side of the menu-bar. You can't 'set' the flexible space. As you add more elements on one side or the other, the flexible space changes in size.

Hope that helps.

You're right. The favicons come from the site, if there is one, and show up next to the link. However, IE allows you to set this icon, regardless of whether or not the site came with one default. Not all of the links come with one so there's this icon of a blank sheet of paper and I thought I could set it up myself. From all the options I've played with, I don't think this can be done, yet.

The flexible space is still confusing to me, I guess. I don't see the point of using it instead of the standard space if you can't set it. I *think I understand that it would take up all the space in between two elements if there was empty space but I was hoping I could adjust the length of my location and google bar with it. It's ok, though, no biggie.

Thanks for the help!

OK all you firefox fans answer me some questions. At this point Firefox kinda seems like Linux, might do some great stuff but I don't feel like dealing with troublesome and seemingly endless tinkering.

I've run Slimbrowser for some time now and like some of the features but can't seem to get the same features in Firefox.
In Slim:
If I click on a link which is coded to open in a new window it opens in a new tab, very handy to switch between multiple web sites.
If I enter an address in the address bar it again opens in new tab and handy, I'd rather close the old tab after if I don't need it than to open new tab or window beforehand.

In Firefox I can't seem to get either behavior. I've selected from Tools...options...advanced:
Open links from other applications in: a new tab in the most recent window.
Select new tabs opened from links.
Select new tabs opened from bookmarks or history.

Is the desired Slimbrowser behavior possible in Firefox?

I wouldn't even care except Slim is screwing up real regularly now. I use to love it.

Thanks for any helpful input.

The Burning Edge has more detailed lists of new features and notable bug fixes.

I'm contemplating getting it now vs. getting it after a patch update (i.e. ver. 1.5.1 or whatever it would be called).

just downloaded and installed. the only problem so far is my theme isn't compatible yet, and the dev won't have even an alpha version for a few days.

what themes are you using?

Yeah, I hope the extensions catch up w/ ver. 1.5 soon. I'm using Silver Skin 2.6.3 for Firefox 1.0.7. I can wait a month for a patched 1.5 (1.5.1?) and more theme and extension support. Also, Thunderbird 1.5 should be out soon since it's in RC state. Maybe I should start the new year off w/ 1.5 for each.

I just upgraded my FF from 1.0.7 to 1.5. I downloaded the setup file and installed it "on top" of the old FF in the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox directory. Everything went well. I was notified that a couple of my extensions and themes would not work w/ 1.5, but luckily, the important ones had updates available that are compatible w/ FF 1.5.

So far so good, but I haven't noticed much difference in terms of the user interface between the 2 FFs. However, the Tools > Options stuff is quite different. Now I can't wait until Thunderbird 1.5 is officially released. It's currently at RC2 state.

Hey Geeke19, have you found the portable FF to actually be very useful? I somewhat understand its purpose but it seems a bit early for actual use.

I had Adblock 0.5.2.039 for FF 1.0.7 and when I upgraded to FF 1.5, it didn't tell me there'd be any incompatibility. But Adblock wasn't working w/ the new FF.

So I went to Mozilla's site and found out that Adblock has been updated to ver. 0.5.2.056 (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10&application=firefox). So I uninstalled Adblock, restarted FF, installed Adblock, restarted FF, and now it seems to be working fine. :)

I might now look into getting a filter instead of manually updating Adblock. Since I uninstalled Adblock, I lost my custom settings, so I might as well look into an Adblock filter.

Edit: I take that back! Even though I uninstalled Adblock and installed the newer Adblock, it kept my previously blocked filters. :) On a related note, Tools > Extensions > Adblock Options indicates v0.5.2.055 instead of 056.

How to deal with the memory leak? It's eating up over 100mb of my memory. I tried the set memory capacity thing but it doesn't seem to work. Could it be my pentium 2 processor?

FF? Mine with plenty of extensions, especially Sessionsaver has been known to use 80-120MB, so it might not be a memory leak, just depends on the number of windows open and other things.

I successfully upgraded Mozilla Thunderbird from 1.0.7 to 1.5. So far, so good! All of my themes and extensions had updates available, so I didn't encounter any problems. The look-and-feel of 1.5 is very similar to 1.0.7, but I know there are quite a few behind-the-scenes changes. One obvious noticeable improvement is that when you compose a new e-mail, all misspelled words are immediately highlighted w/ a red underline, kind of like in MS Word, so that you know your typos before you run spell check.

FYI, Mozilla has released Firefox 1.5.0.1. Here's (http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/releases/1.5.0.1.html) the release notes on it. I don't like how they made the version 4 digits long. :shake: FF automatically installed the updates and the next time I reboot my browser, it should be patched up.

On an unrelated note, but related to Web browsers in general, CNet conducted a review (http://reviews.cnet.com/Internet_Explorer_7_for_XP_SP2_Beta_2/4505-3514_7-31454661.html?tag=nl.e501) of MS Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP SP2 Beta 2 (say that 5 times fast!).

Thanks for the link. I wonder how Google's toolbar compares to the one on Mozilla's site that works for FF 1.5 (but not 1.5.0.1).

The paranoid part of me thinks Google's version would be bogged down w/ corporate/advertising crap (as subtle as they may be), now that they're a public company.

The only way I know you can do this is to go to tools --> adblock --> preferences, and uncheck the 'Enable Adblcok' radio button. This does turn off all adblock functionality, however. I use WebCT also for school, and I don't turn off adblock. Why do you need to hide the adblock tab?
Not true, you can whitelist the page. Right-click the adblock button on the the bottom right of your browser then on the top right you can press whitelist (either that page only or the whole site).

Look at the date of the post, this was way before the whitelisting option was available.

Microsoft reaches out to Firefox developers (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9593_22-6108221.html), according to that ZDNet article. If I was very paranoid, I'd say this reeks of some sort of "trap" by Microsoft or at least a public relations stunt.

... The head of Microsoft's open-source business has offered to help get Firefox to work with Windows Vista, but it remains to be seen whether Mozilla and the open-source community will respond positively. ...

I don't think I fully understand your question. If I highlight text on a Web page with FF (left click), I do see the options to Cut, Copy, Paste, and Delete when I right click over that highlighted text.

Top 10 list of Top 10 Firefox add-on lists (http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9662350-2.html)

A lot of us want to live in Firefox 2. But we also want to bend it to our will, to customize it so it's just right. Our visions of the ideal Firefox are different, though. The Web surfer will want one thing, for example, and the programmer another. So check out this Official Webware Firefox Top 10 List. Not of extensions. Of other lists.

How to get your old extension to work with new firefox
1) Download the extension file
2) Rename the file extension from xpi to zip.
3) Open the zip file
4) Open install.rdf
5) Change Maxversion to 1.0 (or higher)
6) Rename zip back to xpi
7) Drag xpi to your firefox.

That's useful to know, considering some old extensions may only be inhibited from current versions because they're untested. But what if an old extension is restricted to old versions for a good reason, and it causes FF to fail? Is there a cleanup process that is guaranteed to restore FF to its original state?

I've been stuck on an old version of FF, because the later versions cannot generate MAFF files. Has anyone tried the above strategy to install the MAFF extension?
