I received an email from AC Nielsen, they are looking for new members for thier HOMESCAN panel. I've been a member for two years and I really like it, all you do is scan everything you buy and send a upload transmission once a week, in return you get "points" to cash in for prizes. (not cheesey prizes, good Name Brand stuff)

Heres the link!

I was on the Homescan panel for a short while and didn't mind it, it's not bad once you get the hang of it and you can get some decent stuff. I had to quit when I switched to Vonage as their system could not accept transmissions from a digital phone line...just something to keep in mind.

It took FOREVER (well, maybe about 6-8 weeks) for my scanner to arrive after they called me to tell me they were sending it. You scan items at home...have to have price and store info, too...it's not difficult, just time consuming. Sorry, I can't remember what kind of prizes they offer (Hubby swiped the prize book and I haven't seen it since).

I tried it and quickly returned my scanner. In my opinion the "prizes" did not fit the points needed. I did not feel that most of the items were worth it and what was kind of decent, it would have taken over a year to get. I prefer programs like Pinecone where I can spend my earnings as I choose.

It's not that kind of scanner. It's a handheld device that reads bar codes. :)

That's what I thought too. But my dad scans every item he buys. He doesn't have a seizure if he misses an item though. It doesn't take him long. He just scans it as he pulls it from the bag and that's that.

I agree. We've been doing it for a couple years, looked at the catalog and there isn't anything there we really want. And it's a lot of work. So we will be discontinuing it. Be sure to look at the Rewards first and be ready to do a lot of scanning for a long time.

how long do you have to scan for to get ANY kind of prize?

That is what I was wondering. From reading the post's my guess would be 8 months to a year for the good stuff or maybe two years............ :dontknow:
Tell me I'm wrong. That's to long.

you had to scan each item, enter a code number for the store where it was purchased, enter a code number for how the item was paid for, whether you used a coupon, whether it was purchased at full price, on sale, with a coupon, etc. It was a lot more work than I was prepared for.

I also read all the "fine print" when it comes, and if you ever break or lose the scanner, you owe them a ton of money. Wasn't worth the risk to me. I quickly returned the scanner. They have never stopped spamming me, even though I have removed myself from the program, returned the scanner, and unsubscribed from all of their e-mails.

:omg: yeah to much work for me. I use so many coupons it would take me hours to input a grocery list.
Thanks for your info!

Just a heads up... AC Neilson is Pinecone. Neilson owns a ton of sites dedicated to product testing and consumer surveys but most don't compensate as well as their Pinecone subsidiary.

Neilson also runs the program where they pay you to let them install spyware (essentially) on your computer to see what sites you visit. Far too nosey for me. It makes me wonder what they do with all of your personal information. Naturally, at the grocery store, with club cards, 867-5309 is a very popular account in all cities.

I was a member of the program for awhile, it took about 6 months to receive my scanner. Once I received it, we scanned items a few times. The number of points earned were very low. Even if you scanned every single item you bought every single day (which is what they want by the way), it would still take a long time to earn enough points to earn a decent prize. Additionally, when I was reading about the program, I thought it was like a UPC scanner type thing where you would just scan each item, but instead you had to scan each item, enter a code number for the store where it was purchased, enter a code number for how the item was paid for, whether you used a coupon, whether it was purchased at full price, on sale, with a coupon, etc. It was a lot more work than I was prepared for.

How long did it take you to earn enough points to get the luggage set?

Is it a good quality luggage set?

How many points do you get for each item you scan?

How many points does the good stuff cost?

I don't know if I want to sign up or not... if it's worth it like you say, then I'd have no problem with it... And I think you have to sign up in order to view their gift catalog, because I'm not seeing it on the OP's link.

I got the scanner package with all the info about six weeks ago, and frankly, it looks like a ton of work for very little reward. I'm definitely sending it back. I figured it would take a year or so to get anything decent from their catalog. Plus, as another member said, it's not just scanning the items. They want DETAILS and I use coupons on everything and shop in multiple stores. Looks like it would take hours to answer all the questions about all the items after a day of shopping at different stores and putting all my deals together.

Those scanners take FOREVER to arrive. They told me that it was actually "shipped" out of their warehouses on the 6th. Today is the 18th. When I contacted them, they told me to give until the end of this week because it usually takes this much time for it to arrive. How did they send it? Horseback?

They said they will resend another scanner to my current address and then my online account will get re-activated once I receive the scanner.

Sorry to be so long answering. I just saw your question. As I remember it, you get points for participating for that week, not per item. It was over 100,000 pts for a Coach Bag, for example. That's probably three or four years worth of work. I'd just go buy it if I want it! I did send mine back. Much too much time for so little compensation--and that's just MHO.

I was a member of this last year. I had one that had to be transmitted online. During a bad storm, with it being hooked up to my computer, we had lighting strike really close to us, causing the power to go out for a while. When it came back on the scanner didnt work anymore. I emailed them and called them numerous times over a few months about this, trying to get someone to help me with it. All of a sudden, I recieved a notice in the mail letting me know that since I had not uploaded anything to them in a while, it was "apparent" to them I had no interest in being a member anymore, so I had 14 days to return the scanner to them or they were going to put it against my credit! They got their scanner back quickly - along with a really nasty letter about how their customer service sucks since they wouldn't help me for months.

:lmao: :lmao: Points are a PITA to accumulate. You only get a few hundred a week for you transmissions & the cheapest prize you can redeem for is something like 15,000 and it's a hunk of junk wallet. I've been a member for over a year now, transmit & scan religiously, and take all of their surveys and I have yet to find anything worth redeeming my hard earned points for. Good luck:hug:

I was on the list for a long time before I ever got my scanner. I've been scanning for about a year now. I do it faithfully. It really does go by quick and I take every survey too, those are normally short and quick. I do agree it takes along time to accumulate those points and I knew that going into it. I figured I'd save my points for a few years before I would trade them in. I guess I was hoping to MAYBE (yeah right) win one of the those monetary prizes for transmitting my data each week.

I signed up years ago and tried it. I lasted about 4 weeks. It was truly a pain in the butt and the rewards were just not worth it. Clip coupons, read slickdeals and be a smart shopper and you'll save more $ in the long run.

I found it took a while to scan my items, especially since you had to enter many by hand (fruits, vegetables, anything without a UPC code).

Just my humble thoughts.

No you don't. In the instructions that comes with the scanner, it says to scan the stuff you buy with barcodes and enter the amount(s), and when you are done, enter the total amount of what you bought, whether it had a barcode to scan or not.

they tried to pull that with me. I was dropped from the panel when i broke my leg. My wife couldn't figure out how to upload the scanner, and i couldn't get back there. i will now do everything in my power to convince others to not join them. i called up and asked one of the csr's to put my account on hold because of my injury, she said she did. i called up 2 months later when i felt i could return and was told i have been dropped. i returned the scanner and a nasty note. i then got a call from some "recovery firm" asking where it was. i quoted my dilivery confirmation number and poof no more calls.

I was part of this awhile ago -- I ended up returning it because it was such a pain when I did large orders, which is most of my grocery shopping.

I was a member of their panel for a little while, I too, quickly returned their scanner. Here are the reasons why, in case anyone is considering this program:
1) Regardless of how much you buy, you still get a set amount of points each time you scan, sometimes each week.
2) You have to do a lot more than just scan the items, you have to enter codes into the scanner whether you paid full price, used a coupon, bought it on sale, etc. You also have to list the type of store you purchased it at, by typing a code into the scanner, and you have to type in the amount you paid for the item. Far too much work in my opinion.
3) It takes FOREVER to earn enough points to earn a prize. I noticed how few points you could earn in a month, and calculated that the prizes I wanted (small prizes at that) would take 11-18 months of scanning to receive...far too much work for me, for items you can choose from a catalog of prizes from Harris Poll and Zoom Panel and earn much faster.
4) If you damage or lose the scanner, they hold you financially responsible for it, and it was an absurd amount of money.
5) You have to find a place in your house to store the original packaging, and if you ever move you have to return the scanner to them. If you ever leave the program, you have to return the scanner to them. Either way, it has to be in the original packaging.
6) The scanner took a long time to upload data (we had a dial up Internet connection at the time)
7) The software associated with the scanner was "always downloading" new information even when the scanner wasn't plugged in, wasting precious system resources.

Bottom line, our household decided that it was not for us. I suppose if you have children, they might like the task of scanning items, but we certainly did not. On average, it took 2-3 hours to scan a single grocery store trip's worth of items including entering all the data that they ask for, and the payoff just wasn't worth it to us.

Hope those who try the program have better luck with it then we did.

It makes me wonder what they do with all of your personal information. Naturally, at the grocery store, with club cards, 867-5309 is a very popular account in all cities.

867-5309. that's hilarious!

Help! I applied when this thread was first posted. About a month ago I got an email and a voicemail stating that I had been accepted and needed to call them to confirm. After reading posts here about this company, I decided I was not interested. I didn't call them or respond to their emails. I just got home to find that I received a package from them today via UPS. DH signed for it! I assume it's the scanner, but I have not opened it. I wish I would have been here to refuse the package. What's the best way for me to go about getting this back to them now?

I just got this package a few weeks ago, in it was a return address label, postage paid. Just send it back in its original box. If that doesnt work, call them and they are suppose to give you a box or something. its in ther FAQs. They are not going to hurt you I promise.

No way I would send everything I do. As people have said, too much work for too little reward. I just scan a few items each week, send it in and do the surveys. That way it takes about 10 minutes a week. At that rate, it is actually worthwhile.
