yea I know, I get most of them done in less than 10 minutes usually. It adds up quickly too when you save in Amazon money. I have bought so many things, it really helps in this tough economy. Its like I can buy the things I need and want without spending my actual money to do so.

OK, here's a survey of mine!
Which lottery would you prefer -
a) 1/25 chance of winning $25.00
or
b) 1/10 chance of winning $10.00
I choose "b" (especially since I have never won an "a"!).
Well, OK, I've never won a "b" either, but those are usually shorter, so losing isn't as painful! ;)
I noticed that one of my favorite researchers started doing more of the "b" types. Smart person. I always sign up!
It goes without saying that we all sign up for the $5 non-lottery studies, eh?
[Really, this would be an interesting subject for a study! Just sayin']

And that is why your "favorite researcher" will never do a guaranteed pay study.
Don't do the drawings. My thoughts aren't free. Force them to have guaranteed pay. If they can't get enough responses by paying only 1/10 people, they're going to have to pay everyone sooner or later.

You're wrong on that count. MFR does both.
The question was not "lottery vs paid" (that's obvious), it was which lottery would you prefer.
Anyone who has been here for a while knows that there used to be oodles of paid studies.
Now they are few and far between.
Seems to be working for the researchers. Check the number of posts from people wanting to get in, and unable to do so.
I appreciate any opportunities they give us (and the choices we can make regarding those opportunities).
And that is why your "favorite researcher" will never do a guaranteed pay study. Don't do the drawings. My thoughts aren't free. Force them to have guaranteed pay. If they can't get enough responses by paying only 1/10 people, they're going to have to pay everyone sooner or later.

Agreed. I stopped doing the lottery studies years ago. If everyone did the same, they'd have to start paying for each study.

Is this happening to anyone else?
I get an email this evening telling me that 4 paid studies are available (exciting, huh?)
The following studies have timeslots available:
Regifting: $5 amazon.com gift card for 8 minutes
Survey Studies 2: $5 amazon.com gift card for 2 studies, 25 minutes total
Teamwork Across Media: $5 amazon.com gift card for 30 minutes
Time, money and happiness: $15 amazon.com gift card for 50 minutes
If a study does not appear, it is for one of two reasons:
1. You are not qualified for that particular study
2. The timeslots have already been filled.
But when I go to the website (within 10 minutes), none of them are listed - just one lottery one.
?????? Grrrrrr .....

You dont wait for them to send anything. You log in and check under "studies" for online surveys/studies you can partake in.
That only works if they've created an account for you after signing up. Which is the problem a lot of us who have tried to register as members are having.
I've tried to sign in or retreive my password and get this message which I take it to mean for some reason they haven't accepted anyone who signed up or if they did nobody has spoken up here about it. I tried signing up a second time at around 2 am at the beginning of last week and still nothing. I thought if I tried at a time like that I'd have to be one of the first 100 trying for the day.
Here's the message I mentioned above....

I seem to win quite a few of these lotteries for the college surveys. The college lotteries are the only lottery/sweeps I do for free (unless it might be a PT or prescreener for something good) They must have a maximum number of participants which keep the odds at a reasonable level.

I agree with your approach on the university studies - they are thought provoking and actually have a purpose in life as opposed to some of the nonsense we suffer through for a shot at thousands of dollars on a quarterly sweepstakes that nobody ever wins.

Got the email also. I have done a lot of their studies. Won't be surprised (but will be disappointed) if I get deactivated. Guess we have to wait out the next week or so and see what happens. Bummer as I have won (and just won) some nice amazon from them.
Dear participant in the Stanford Graduate School of Businessstudy pool, This email is to let you know that we will be tightening therequirements for our participants to remain activeparticipants in our pool. We are tightening the requirementsbecause we want to be sure that the results we get in ourstudies are robust and generalizable to an averagepopulation of people. The problem is that participants thathave taken very many of these studies become so familiarwith these kinds of studies over time that they oftenunintentionally answer differently than they otherwise wouldif they had never taken a study. This can throw off ourresults, even invalidate them, causing us to have to rethinkand rerun the study in a new way. And it doesn't help you tolegitimately contribute to science. This is bad for us, andbad for you. Therefore, we will be deactivating participants that havetaken an excessive number of studies, to be determined. Thiswill take effect within the next week. Often, we find participants signing up for a study in thesystem and eventually not completing it - this is roughly10% of all participants that sign up. In the future, wesuggest that when you sign up for a study that you actuallycomplete the study, because our system marks when you havesigned up for a study, not if you have completed it or not.Our new policy should give you incentive to actually takethe studies that you sign up for. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please donot email us asking to request your account to bereactivated as we will be unable to accommodate you. We aredoing this in the interest of psychological science. We are grateful for your participation in our pool, and yourunderstanding. Sincerely,The Stanford GSB Behavioral Lab

Exactly. They practically beg us to take surveys now its suddenly a problem? They could easily just send accoridng to our profiles or tell us which one we could do.

My first one ever is listed as Dec. 2007. I seldom, if ever, take the lottery ones so that's probably why my carryover is so much less than yours for the period of a year. If the carry over is only from 01/2010, as twynk says, then you did a butt load last year!!

The email that everyone got is worded a bit different than normal...but they do a clearing house of sorts about once maybe twice a year. This is how they clean up not only nonactive accounts but also accounts that are being used and maybe even abused. I would not be to worried about this. I get the email ( similar to this) almost every year also. You have to see it from their end. Many folks sign up and even place commitments to do surveys and never follow thru. If this is a pattern in some accounts or an account is flagged as being abused in some way ...then ..it needs to be looked at. I have been with Stanford for about 5 years and have never had my account stopped. BTW... the credits that are accumulated in an account are only for students

I hope they still throw me in the reward drawings for those surveys that I have already completed recently.
As well as the last two paying studies I did that I haven't been paid for.
I really enjoyed the studies, too bad they had to do this. Stanford is probably going to lose a lot of supporters from this, unfortunately. I loved the fact that I was able to help out with their research, its the only thing I could contribute. Now since that is gone, they're just another college in my eyes that I have absolutely nothing to do with.
Honestly, instead of disabling it outright, they should make it so you can see the studies that you have done, but not be able to sign up for anything additional.

I don't think that I did more than maybe 2-3 lottery studies in the almost 3 years I've been with them, and they were in the very beginning before I figured out that sometimes that restricted you from doing some of the paid ones. Maybe thats why I haven't gotten canned yet.

I do Mturk things for Amazon and the surveys there range from 1.00-7.00 with video on demand hits going for 3-5 bucks. So last year I made 322.00 with Mturk compared to the maybe 150 I got through GSB (and I have only ever won ONE drawing). Guess to Mturk and other sites I will go from now on.

its all on trial and error, weeding out spam or those that are not going to pay. I typically do the "videos on demand" thing where you look up movies on VOD (like Time Warner VOD)...it asks simple questions like is this movie offered and if so....whats the rating, minutes long, rental window etc. Those range from 3-5 dollars, and often they have those hits specific to areas such as mine which is Cincinnati, OH. They offer general hits for those that are 1.00. Takes me like 3 minutes to gather all info
As far as the actual surveys, you just got to look @ the hit and see if it looks real. Like they will say take this survey in another tab/window...when you get to the end you will be given a completion code...then you enter that code into the Mturk window. And submit.
I generally search for things 1.00 and up....and make at least 20 bucks a month. So yea give it a go, its really worth it. Like I said, I made over 300 last year so its possible. You just have to trial and error till you figure out which are real and not real (you will eventually be able to tell before you accept the hit). Hope that helps you.

You just have to trial and error till you figure out which are real and not real (you will eventually be able to tell before you accept the hit). Hope that helps you.
Since you're logging in to mTurk via your Amazon.com account, when you click on the links to complete "hits" or surveys, could clicking on a fake or unscrupulous link, compromise your credit card and other Amazon.com info?

I doubt it could, but if you are worried there is a firefox addon like called Mturk options or something and it lets you see the rating of each HIT and the person who posted it. At first I was worried someone would scam my Amazon account but then I figured it was all run through Amazon.com itself so that is unlikely. That is also why I try to stick with surveys and Movie Enquirer Hits. Also the money goes to your Amazon Payments account then from there you transfer it to an Amazon GC or your bank account, so its not like it directly gets to your Amazon information.
Edit: Here is the link to the TurkOpticon addon

Not yet - you had to have done the follow-up survey (one question) to be entitled to the incentive.
I took the original survey on 12/26 and follow-up on 1/6.

cool! I hope you find it to be enjoyable like I have. Don't get discouraged if some are rejected, it happens. My dashboard is like this:
Submitted 880 —
... Approved 858 97.6%
... Rejected 21 2.4%
... Pending 1
so getting some rejected is okay. Hope you do well on it and make a lot of amazon dough.

Wow, yeah that does suck. Pretty sure it must be being a member for too long instead of how many you have taken as hubby was deactivated and he's been a member for about the same time frame but has taken only 2 or 3 surveys total in like 2+ years. Should I expect the other college panels to dump me soon as I joined them all in the same timeframe, or is Stanford GSB the only one that dumps panelists regularly?

I've tried to sign up 3 times since they supposedly started accepting new members in Nov and haven't heard a thing. Got a weird reply when I e-mailed them to ask about it too. If this person was telling the truth then they must be getting really picky because nobody that's answered when I've asked the same question previously in this thread has heard back from them either.

emailed them to ask why disabled waiting on answer.
Not sure why you need to ask them. They sent everyone an e-mail saying why.
This email is to let you know that we will be tightening the
requirements for our participants to remain active
participants in our pool. We are tightening the requirements
because we want to be sure that the results we get in our
studies are robust and generalizable to an average
population of people. The problem is that participants that
have taken very many of these studies become so familiar
with these kinds of studies over time that they often
unintentionally answer differently than they otherwise would
if they had never taken a study. This can throw off our
results, even invalidate them, causing us to have to rethink
and rerun the study in a new way. And it doesn't help you to
legitimately contribute to science. This is bad for us, and
bad for you.
Therefore, we will be deactivating participants that have
taken an excessive number of studies, to be determined. This
will take effect within the next week.
