playing around on my phone right now. So far so good. Thanks Slickdeals!!!
Suggestion: I'd like to be able to go to the middle of a long thread without pushing previous or next a bunch of times. When using my PC, I can jump to different pages of a large by clicking the page number. Does this make sense?

Yeah we can definitely take a look at adding that to our to-do list. Thanks for the suggestion.
Another suggestion is to be able to go to the next page from the bottom of a page. Overall the site looks great. Much easier to navigate than the non-mobile version of slickdeals. After about an hour of surfing on my phone i'm hooked. I will be doing a lot more slickdealing from my phone. This will really come in handy if I'm in a B&M and need to refer back to a post.
Thanks again Slickdeals

New format conveys less in more space.
Browsing Hot Deals forum, the old format, listed more threads.
On my 176x220 cell phone screen, it's harder to browse thread titles with the new format.
Perhaps for more real estate there could be an option to show thread titles only, excluding posted by, Replies, Views, thumbs.
Or a key to press to skip to next title.

Hey, Mr. Slickdeal, can you add the option to jump to the last page of a thread from the thread list like the main site allows (usually says Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.....Last). Great thanks! Currently, we can only open a thread on page 1.
Also, we don't have the User CP option, or at least I cannot find it. I use that feature religiously. Overall, this new site is great.. I've tinkled in slickdeals from my mobile before, but now its fully functional...niiiiiicccceee!

...can you add the option to jump to the last page of a thread from the thread list like the main site allows (usually says Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.....Last).
We can look into this, however we're trying to find the balance between data, screenspace, and functionality. Throwing too much data on the threadview may make it more inconvenient to browse it as a whole, ie readability and what not, and we certainly dont want to add more lines per thread than necessary. We'll try out some revisions on our dev end though :).
...
Also, we don't have the User CP option, or at least I cannot find it. I use that feature religiously.
The mobile version of the site still is not intended to be a complete replacement for the actual website, just a more convenient way to look at it on your phone. There are a lot of functions on the website forums and usercp that require the use of javascript and etc, which is not possible for a mobile version. But we'll see what we can and cannot trickle into the mobile site!
Thanks for the suggestion!

What kind of phone and browser are you using? Currently the mobile page is designed to resize itself to various widths, but if you're concerned with the actual text content we'll try to look at that. Its difficult weighing in what is "removeable" because imho all of it is pertinent.
Although on the flip side, the frontpage is like that.
Thanks we'll take your request into consideration!

okay...I don't know exactly what you guys changed..but it looks like absolute cr*p on my phone. Previously I've been able to type in forums.slickdeals.net direct into my Samsung a950 and it was formatted just right to my screen. Now I see there two gigantic boxes on the top with a black bar above that (above home-hot deals-coupons-forums), and 95% of the time it freezes on me on EVDO and gives me an error "Insufficient memory for this operation". I'm sure this is fine and all for Blackberries and Sidekicks who can render these pages well but not for the other 50% of us who visit SD on a normal mobile phone. Can you replace the old layout when I type in forums.slickdeals.net into my phone..or make a separate wap version or something? It really doesn't display very well..:sadwalk:

As old format was back today some things are more clear as to why I found it easier to use:
1) Having only Titles as links made for easily browsing Hot Deals Forum.
new format has more links to navigate past.
2) All text displayed across entire width of screen = more to read in less space.
new format uses 1/4 - 1/3rd of a line to whitespace & borders.
3) No whitespace (blank lines) between threads.
new format adds whitespace between threads -
Overall the new format looks pretty but requires more scrolling to bypass multiple links per thread and for viewing next thread (more up & down scrolling to see next thread title)
Having a key to go directly to next thread title would help in navigating.

That should say 'back to top', not sure what happened there. Two other things. One, there doesn't seem to be a way to edit posts. Two, there needs to be a way to jump to the last post in a thread from the thread view.

I'm new to using internet on my cellphone, but I do have a suggestion. Maybe instead of loading the full log-in boxes at the top of each new screen, maybe one log-in box that linked you to the log-in screen would be better for any page that wasn't the front page?

No it would not. When I had my Treo 650 it formated correctly automatically but now that I have the Treo 700p it downloads the full site and takes forever. Now that there is a separate mobile site, it is much faster on my 700p.

Props to SD! I've been wanting a mobile version of SD for years! Not enough web pages have mobile versions. (It's really aggrivating that the cheap airlines like skybus don't have mobile web pages, and require fancy javascript or flash support!)
I suggest the more compact notation << < > >> or |< < > >| for thread navigation, and forget about page numbers.
Also, I noticed it's cumbersome to access my subscriptions, which I often want to do on the go. It looks like the quickest way to the subscriptions now is to tap "private messages" then "user control panel" then scroll to the bottom, and then select "subscriptions" from the pull down menu. Subscription is a long word, so I suggest using making a tiny icon for it.
More ways to consolidate:
* Get rid of the "home" link, and simply make the banner at the very top an active link that takes us home. That's a convention most users are aware of. Links for "hot deals - coupons - forums" may even fit on the top line as part of the banner.
* Remove "you last visited <timestamp>"
* Remove "posted by:" and simply print the username followed by a colon.. it will still be obvious that it's from that user.
* Code the thumbs to immediately follow the subject, rather than take up a whole line.
* Change "welcome jgombos" to "hi jgombos"
* Change "(Log out)" to an icon of a tiny half-open door.. or at least get rid of the space - "logout" is how it should be spelled.
[EDIT] Even better, get rid of the greeting altogether.. and just have a link that reads Logout jgombos. That conveys the same information, and options. It tells me I'm logged in, and provides the option to leave all in two words.
* Most users probably know that PM stands for Private Message, so you can abbreviate the "Private Messages" link. And use a fraction for the number of read messages. So Private Messages: Unread 0, Total 75 becomes PMs: 0/75
* Switch to military time, and remove AM PM. "At" becomes "@". So Today at 09:00 PM could be Today@2100.

bryantq
08-03-2007, 09:51 PM
Thanks for the suggestions, we're going to go through all of them and seriously consider them. However when i mentioned finding the balance between screenspace and data, the real concern is only the addition of new lines; but still being able to read the data clearly.
One of these issues is using graphics and icons -- the less the better, which is why we opted for links instead of icons. Adding an image simply means another connection and more work for the browser and more things to download. Furthermore, on mobile browsers as you move around your links get highlighted as you go, so its not an issue of having to "click" somewhere.
So that'll be a preface for the responses below.
Additionally, if there is a line already being occupied for some reason, for example the private message line:
Private Messages: 0 Unread, 5 Total
Even if we changed it to:
PM: 0 Unread, 5 Total
It still occupies a line, and irregardless on the standard 320x240px (sometimes higher) cell browser [aside: note that the mobile site was designed for the "newer" phones, whereas wap 1.0 is designed for cell phones that do not have a modern browser], you can read both in either orientation. So really it comes down to, well we could abbreviate it, but why? Its not a length issue, and it really doesnt save us that many bits, so we could just leave it and make it easy to read.
I suggest the more compact notation << < > >> or |< < > >| for thread navigation, and forget about page numbers.
For this, some people will want to use page numbers and if we removed it we take away that functionality. And again, since the page navigation is already occupying a line, theres no real reason to truncate it because as it is now, it still displays (and does not wrap) on the average cell browser. And with text its easier to read.
We'll work on the subscription page.
* Get rid of the "home" link, and simply make the banner at the very top an active link that takes us home. That's a convention most users are aware of.
* Change "welcome jgombos" to "hi jgombos".
This is also another one of those issues that "do we really need to? Aesthetically it makes no real difference.
* Remove "you last visited <timestamp>"
May do this :)
* Remove "posted by:" and simply print the username followed by a colon.. it will still be obvious that it's from that user.
May do this :)
* Code the thumbs to immediately follow the subject, rather than take up a whole line.
Yeah we were playing around with this. During the initial design doing this sometimes caused ugly wraparounds due to the variable length of titles, and sometimes made it harder to read the title. But we'll continue to investigate this possibility.
* Change "(Log out)" to an icon of a tiny half-open door.. or at least get rid of the space - "logout" is how it should be spelled.
[EDIT] Even better, get rid of the greeting altogether.. and just have a link that reads "Logout jgombos". That conveys the same information, and options. It tells me I'm logged in, and provides the option to leave all in two words.
Yeah we want to try to avoid using additional graphics period. Part of me wants it to stay similar to the forum as is, but this might work; we'l play around with condensing it all, but in the end if it takes up a whole line then we'll just leave it hehe.
* Switch to military time, and remove AM PM.
Hmm we can try this, although not many people are military time saavy lol. That and that is beyond the "skinning" aspect and turns into a programming/configuration issue -- of which for the sake of being able to upgrade and port these changes around easily we want to avoid.
Thanks so much for all your comments! We appreciate the feedback to help us make the mobile site better. We'll ponder your suggestions and try them out on our development end and if we get a positive response you might find it in the next update :)

I was figuring if you could reduce the size of things, more things can share a line. ie. logout jgombos could be on the same line as PMs: 0/75.
Also, logging out and reading private messages are probably lesser used functions, and could be placed at the foot of the page.
Another more radical feature would be to remove articles from posts. There are some voicemail to email services that do this. ie, words like "a the to..." can be stripped to fit more of the content of a voicemail on a small screen. Some words can have vowels stripped. SD could do the same thing.
[EDIT] On the issue of icons, I believe most of these portable devices have a generous amount of bandwidth compared to the amount of content they are viewing. I would say screen real estate is more important than speed, because these are high speed connections folks are using. So I would favor replacing long worlds (like subscriptions) with a tiny icon to save screen space. (too bad there is no mouseover capability with these touchscreens).

Also, take into consideration that any smartphone that isn't a touch screen essentially uses tabs to scroll down a page. The more links, the longer it takes to navigate. In other words, the fewer links the better, especially at the top.
It's better with Opera's mini-browser than with IE, but IE is the default for any Windows Mobile device, and many people aren't savvy enough to search out a new browser, or even know that they can do so.
The mobile version is looking pretty darn good overall. I'm a mucho happy camper.
(the modcp doesn't work so well on a mobile, though. :P)

I just tested this out; true that the browsing is by links (i have a blackjack, ie non touchscreen), however as your browse down a page, its not like you're forced to visit all the links on the line, just new links per line; But considering that theres only 4 links before the main content i think its pretty good :D But yeah we'll try to condense things.
(the modcp doesn't work so well on a mobile, though. :P)
Hah you shouldnt be using the mobile version for your duties lol :D The mobile version isnt designed to be a complete replacement for the site hehe. There are some things that are impossible (ie javascript working well, ajax etc) that editing and modcp uses.

More or less true, however with the way VB is made that whole user block is "together" (the welcome, the pm links, and the logout) and not so easily seperated without hardcoding it. So moving the block to the bottom would mean that you dont have a direct access to the usercp or subscriptions without adding another link up top anyway.
We will try to condense things to one line :)
The articles thing is a nifty idea but probably not within the scope of these minor changes :D and would again require customized coding of vbulletin's code which right now is a pita :D lol. But we'll have to keep that in mind for future revisions.
On the issue of bandwidth; its not necessarily that they dont have the speed its that bytes cost money. While granted I happen to have an unlimited plan, i dont think everyone has the 30-50 a month to do so and we're taking that into consideration.
is there a way to add a "bottom of page" link scrolling down to the last post takes a lot of time. atleast for me anyway

That would be easy for them to do. HTML has an instruction that will link to any position on a page. Another option is to go into your control panel options, and reverse the sort order so the most recent posts are at the top.

Personally, I'd rather have a 'last post' option rather than a 'bottom of page' option.

I would agree with that.
i really dont care as long as i dont have to scroll through all the posts. if it gets me to the last post you can call it what you like.

In that case you don't need any changes.. just change your control panel options to sort in descending order.
i cant seem to access it through my phone tho

Everything looks really good, but one change is drastically needed. Last page needs to be 'last post'. When there are 40 posts per page, it is a real pain in the ass to scroll all the way to the end of the page. Please change it to 'last post' or 'last viewed post' (even better). :)

I was using the mobile site today and noticed something I think should be added. Is there a simple way to add goto first unread post functionality to the thread titles or if not then at the top of the post itself? I like to view my subscribed threads and the "last post" is not necessarily the last one I read.
Looks nice on my new VX6700. :)

When clicking on a link to slickdeals in a post on the mobile site, it tries to take you to the regular site. Is it possible to redirect 'normal' posts on the mobile site to their mobile counterparts?

i agree The Radish the wap portion of this site could use some work, and is the actual growth area of the net. mobile deal alerts r also nice. yourphonenumber@txt.att.net works very nicely when sitting deal alerts up, if your an att/cingular customer.

I also find this very annoying. I use the same alerts for my desktop and pda/mobile phone. Desktop I have no problem, but on the pda/mobile phone, the posts take up way too much reality.
My suggestion would to add a mobile link at the beginning of the OP thread or at the point of entry. This will allow desktop users to view the page as it is intended. mobile users can switch to mobile mode if needed.
Another suggestion would be to put a mobile link with the desktop link in the alerts. This will be a setup option in the Alert Options. This way, the normal desktop users would not received more verbage that needed.

I set a bookmark to SD Mobile on my home screen on my 3G iPhone but whenever I open it, it doesn't open in Safari. It opens in like a fake-browser screen with no address bar or browser buttons. It's slightly frustrating because it closes the screen when I click on a link and actually opens Safari.
Is this intentional?

No, it is not intentional. That is how the home screen bookmark works.
For those of us with touch screens, can you space out the links better?

I didn't see this as a suggestion but it would be helpful to be able to search for posts within a specific thread. Say I'm in the B&M/Drugstore forum. And I go into a thread. On regular SD I'm able to search only in the thread I'm currently in. But in Mobile mode I can't.
