Would it be possible to Require a new user to wait a certain number of days before posting a deal and/or have a way to effectivly remove reputation points so we can weed out the morons who post to self promote and those who post Free Ipod type things. They almost Always have new names- but a few of them come from rather experianced posters- this would go a long way to discouraging this kind of unwelcome posts.

I think that is a pretty good idea. I am so sick of the free ipod threads!

also, find a way to make the morons read the rules so they stop calling the dealers, or ban them as well!

warning system is already in place for mods to ban, and senior mods can ban immediately if it is sever enough. i think its fine the way it is. the only thing i agree with is finding some way to stop new users from posting free ipod links, but unfortunately there is no easy way to do so.

IP Ban, otherwise. you can't.... but you CAN block anyone that has the word Ipod in a new thread post. or contains a link matching free-ipods or whatever.

IP ban doesn't work with ISPs like AOL and others that use proxies... and then there are public proxies. Point blank there is no way to permanently ban someone. Filtering (censoring) URLs or words would work... but the problem with that is the potential to filter legit offers and the Ipod spam haus can generate a ton of URLs.
Bottom line, it's the net. Gotta take the good, bad, and ugly with it.

Finally, someone else who understands at least some of the problems of IP bans! I hear IP ban this and IP ban that, but nobody seems to realize that it wouldn't work for anything. Depending on your connection, it's as simple as disconnecting/reconnecting, restarting your computer, or releasing/renewing your DHCP lease. Almost every time, you'll have a brand new IP address, and some poor shmuck with your old one won't be able to get in till he does one of the things listed above.

Not just some hon.... been on the net a long time mostly due to my husband starting up his own ISP in 1994. I've been running my own small forum site for a couple years as well, so the problem with bans is very well understood.

Good. I've gotten sick of assuming that somebody with a little knowledge has more than they've specifically shared, so sorry if I sold you short. I also know there are several others on here who have a pretty good grasp of the situation, but the only ones who ever seem to open their mouths are the ones who don't have a clue what they're talking about.
So let me ask the question a little differently...
As a moderator, are you telling us the best way to stop this behavior is to make negative reputation replys to these types of users.
And if so, can we use a common phrase, so that the users and moderators understand the feedback?

as a moderator the way for you to stop self promotion is simply mod alert the post. we'll take it from there. we have methods in place to ban people if we feel it warrants it.

You mean there isn't just a huge red "BAN" button next to everyone's screenname that goes out and removes the user's ability to ever visit slickdeals.net?!?!?! What kind of crap forum software are you guys running? :lmao:

that's all user based, in the deal forums/tech support find a post from a user and click the little green box. then you can enter a comment i guess and submit. post a lot of slickdeals and see your rep climb

I know from running a irc server in the past that ip bans don't work but banning certain hosts or domains do. If you get a recurrent user from a domain that there aren't any other members from why not just ban the domain/host? I know that many anon surf programs will counter act this but maybe would work?

I am confused ....What do you have against free I-Pod threads. If you do'nt like the deal then DO NOT click on it!
I benefitted from a recent Free I-Pod thread and I am happy about it. I think slickdeals should encourage new users and not ban them as we need more and more people looking out for the deals. I do not click on the threads if I do not like it .......as simple as that!

Yes, I benefitted from a recent thread by MarysLamb about a free I-Pod mini . I signed up for the citibank account as I had $2500 to open the account and am willing to wait for 3 months for the I-Pod to arrive. I was anyway wanted to open a citibank account as I need to transfer money to my folks in India and citibank does it for free as well. So, I really do not understand why people are so negative about this deal and in what way this constitutes a selfpromotion?
Did the deal harm anyone or did anyone was "used" by people signing up on this deal. Please let me know!
These forums aren't a microcosm of anarchy, they have rules.
No self promotion is a rule. You broke that rule.
How much simpler must it be stated for you to understand?

that's not what every one is talking about when they say free ipod links. its something like from freeipod.com where you have to get 5 people to complete promotions/trials using their referral code. if you notice the thread you are talking about was not deleted.

But still I do not understand why that guy who posted that deal about "free I-Pod for signing up for a CitiBank Account" is getting negative points from the users. I am asking this because I would rather not waste my time and effort in posting a deal on this forum when all I will get is criticism, negative points in return and NO encouragement without people having even BOTHERED to actually learn about the details of the deal . I think we should encourage people on this forum for posting deals (rather then discourage) for everyone's benefit!

i'm assuming this is the thread you are referring to: http://slickdeals.net/forums/t60745.html?&highlight=ipod
the only "negative" points are from people who say its not worth it, if you invest the money you can make 250 dollars and buy your own ipod and not have to worry about using bill pay and maintaining 1500. or its the usual smart ass reply of i'd rather use 250 of my 2500 on the ipod. if this is all you are talking about, you need some thicker skin on the internet. its not the mods job to delete every smart ass reply/any negative reply. some of the time those negative replys are good informing people of better alternatives.
again this whole thread is based off referral links. some people think its their right to post referral links here. a lot of people would rather not have sd turned into a referral haven and stick to deals.

why was the mini ipod deal from citibank considered bad? as far as i know, this was a promotion by citibank and not a referral scheme...correct?
This is why:
Well I tried opening my account online on Dec 15 and was still waiting today for it to be activated. I did authorize them to transfer $2500 from my other account on the same day but I suppose they are waiting for Dec 31, 2004 to pass before they transfer those funds into my citibank account. I have talked to their customer service people ( here in US and not in India) almost five times but every time I get the same answer " it will take 24-48 hours of regular business days" to process your account. After I faxed the "signature page" on Dec 16, 2004 they said they were waiting for a copy of my driver's license! ( BUT nobody bothered to tell me to send them a copy fo my Driver's license!!!!) It would have helped if anyone of them actually did send me an e-mail, fax, letter or phoned me to send a copy of my drivers licence.
I HAVE NOW FAXED THEM TO CANCEL THE WHOLE THING TODAY AND MY ADVICE TO YOU IS NOT TO BOTHER WITH ALL THIS HASSLE!
