i tried searching freebies for the phrase "hug" because i want to make sure the freebie i want to post is not a repost, but the results page showed all threads that included the smiley
which effectively makes the results useless to me.
my point: text between two colons should be ignored while searching, or at least make it an option to search like this

You should search with showing results in Threads not posts. This way it's much easier to see if you're reposting a deal/freebie

i do search with results being shown as threads, it just shows all the threads that contain : hug: in it

did you narrow it down to just a thread title search of 'hug' instead of entire post?

Understandable, but you want to find a repost. Therefore you search by using threads to see if something comes up with a similar title. In the end, it does work, although not very intuitively.

dont really understand what your saying but i assume your saying the same as serra in which case i would say that many people do not put enough info in the title to create a useful serp

we are saying to search for thread titles using key words in the specific forum.
perhaps you should give us an example of what you did. i know you tried to search for "hug" but what was it that you wanted to create a thread in freebies on?

i understand what your saying, and like i said most people do not put enough info in the title to just search the title and get meaninful results

Good suggestion.
I dont think OP needs help using the forum or search features. It's a suggestion. Let's leave it at that.

At this time this is a limitation of the search engine. We could potentially add characters which are treaded as separaters, such as , . : ; and others, and are currently ignored for search reasons, but this will break many things. For example "this" and "this:" would return different results, and that would not be good.
Ironically, you can search specifically for  by using "" as your query, but you can not exclude  from your search....
At this time, it will have to stay as it is, sorry :(
As to a workaround - there really isn't one, you could try to search for "hug" in titles only, provided the potential OP included it in his/her title, but that's about it
Oh, a tip for the future, if you would like to not have  show up as text, use  tags

is it possible to implement an ignore feature like google has.
for example
search for: hug -""

for example
search for: hug -""
The negation feature is already available through using "-" or "NOT". Try searching for "free -shipping" and "free shipping" for example.
The problem is with handling separator symbols, such as those I mentioned - when they are ignored, they are ignored globally, and adding -"" causes errors, because of necessary configuration of the search engine.
The addition of the separators to the dictionary is not likely, since it will influence search for SKUs, urls, and other text which is contained in a continuous string (such as an URL, email, and others) which will put us to where we were a while ago, when search was challenged. It's nice to be able to search for "microsoft" and pick up posts which have http://microsoft.com and nothing else "microsoft" in them. If we add : / and others to the list, that will go away :).
There are some tradeoffs which had to be made, and this is one of the lesser evils :)
If in the future we will figure out a way to solve it (maybe search engine will become even better), we definitely will.
