okay so ive been thinking about this for a while and maybe im the only person who cares about this in the least bit, but anyone else out there a tad bit bored by the look of this site?
i mean its a great site and all and i wouldnt trade it for the world but its just sooooo BLAND. and no im not like a stupid crazy interior decorator, but i just think that this site needs a little flair, somthing to set it off from other forums and such.
like amybe under the preferences page, you could have a skins option, like so that some people could look at slick deals in the old color scheme and some people could like look at in an extreme crazy color scheme. maybe this is not possible with the current forums hoster, but oh well. and dont look at me for like how to do this i have no idea about websites or anyhting
also, you could have like a SD prize for like people who design new logos every month and like make them themed. like maybe snow falling behind the logo in december, fire woks on new years blah blah blah.
let me know if none of this is possible, and people if you like this idea, uh make any comments you choose

Well... call me a traditionalist (or whatever you would call someone who prefers the traditional!) but I kinda like the "dependable" look of SlickDeals!!! Every now and then I go onto fatwallet.com or edealinfo.com and quite frankly, it just doesn't stand up in my opinion! I like that it isn't graphics-laden and that it is clear and easy to read. There's not a whole 8,000 pages to navigate through, but it's not hard to find the extended pages if you want them!

I'm for keeping it AS IS!!!

Function vs form is a personal preference, and is often a very entrenched.

People who are strongly one way or the other have a hard time accepting the other side.

When I first found out about SlickDeals I also looked around to see if there were any other sites like that - FatWallet was one of the ones I found but I hate it! The only other one that I've found good deals on is edealinfo.com - bought my Sidekick II for $25 from there! But there is just SO MUCH to navigate through!!!

Well, I also run a web site with forums, same as SD. From a webmaster's perspective, I can tell you that graphic design is very time-consuming, especially when adding "skins". Each time you add a skin, you have to custom code all of the links such as in the navigation bar, and you also have to custom design the buttons, etc so they match the color scheme of the skin. I used to have a lot of skins on my web site, but I removed them except for the most popular, because each time I made a modification to the web site, I'd have to modify each of the skins. I think simple is best.

There isn't much work to be done if you install skins for the forums (vBulletin). All you need to do is replace the banner/logo with your own.

I would respectfully beg to differ. Each time I have added modifications/hacks (I'm using vBulletin 3.0.3), I have had to modify each of my skins to incorporate those modifications. The more skins you have, the more time it takes. To give you an example, if you modify to show the Latest Threads, it will only do it for the default skin when you first log in. You have to modify each skin to display this as well.

I suppose it would depend on how you have your skins organized. You COULD save yourself a bit of work if you have additional skins as a child of the parent default skin as opposed to being separate skins, but you still have to do some tweaking.

In addition, if you are using a portal such as vbIndex, vBadvanced, or vB portal, you have to update the links through the nav bar, modules, etc for each skin that you're using on the site.

(And just an FYI, when I said that my site was the same as SD, I didn't mean that it's a deals-oriented web site. I just meant that it's forum-based and is using forum software, same as SD.)

I don't know if you can add one to a thread that has already been posted.

But on a new thread it is one of the options towards the bottom.

I'm in the country :farmer: and usually connect around 24,000. I'm happy with the site because SlickDeals loads relatively fast compared to other sites. I'd hate to see that change.

Leave it. Don't screw around with a good thing.

Not like Mr. SD has any more extra time on his hands than the rest of us do, anyway.
