View Full Version : Rant about Search and DropDowns

Before I begin my rant, I design webpages and write applications for a living. My rant comes from experience.
These apply to the Forum pages only.
Problem 1:
Problem: Drop downs, they're great, they're wonderful, and they get in the way. I tend to Search, a lot, and now with this new interface my wild mouse habits of flying around my target before actually hitting it are being used against me. Now I don't blame SD for this, after all how can they know that I twitch when I'm looking for good deals? Now here's the thing, I'm reading a thread, and I decide to look for something, I scroll up and move my mouse to click Search. With this new design I have to be careful not to go too far, if I do I mouse over Research, and then I get the drop down. Guess what, the drop down now prevents me from clicking search. Now I have to twitch again and move my pointer *away* from the intended target just to reach it.
Suggestion: Implement it such that it is truly a hover, not a mouse pointer flying over it so lets show it now type behavior. There are multiple ways of doing this, using CSS or JavaScript, I'll leave it up to the SD people to figure this stuff out.
Number 2
Problem: So now I've clicked Search, and guess what, I have to click the search box to get my cursor in there so I can type. I *think* the cursor wants to be there, but it has never stayed put. To search I have to click twice before I can begin typing.
Suggestion: Call focus() on that search textbox! If you do already, it isn't working. This isn't helping my twitching mouse habits at all.
Number 3
Problem: Why do I need to click anything to do a Search, where is my textbox that should always be visible for a quick simple search?
Suggestion: Display an always present search box. To save space you can make it small, and when the user gives it focus then make it larger.
Number 4
Problem: I am ranting.
Suggestion: Please take to heart my suggestions. I have no clue if this post will make it to the right set of eyes, or eye if your'e a pirate, but I'm hoping that others feel the same as I do.
Now to go find me that slick deal on Spiderman 3 I saw around here somewhere.. first I have to get to that darn search button.. argh

BTW, you can probably remove the forum jump drop-downs now...right? (even though not all items are on the new drop-downs...yet)

Either way you'll have to click or tab your way there.

I have to agree with the OP's orginal post. When this was implemented yesterday I had to consistenlty move my mouse to get the spot I wanted, and to get out of where my mouse thought I wanted to go. This is quite annoying!
I am not a compuer genius but I have to say I think it was much easier the orginal way. I may have to turn off javascript. Now if I can just figure out how to do that, because I truly don't have a clue how, and I"m sure it will affect something else on my computer that I may need, which is bothering... ay?

Absolutely true. However, properly placing it will prevent the drop downs from being in the way as well.

Disabling the drop downs isn't an option that I can find...

I really don't see the big deal about the hover thing, but can't the blue and the black menu bars be merged to avoid this?

Well, personally I love the drop down menu, EXCEPT for the fact it drops down too easily, just on hover, without my wanting it to. I'd like it much better if it was available only with a definate user CLICK of the mouse and not just floaty and flighty, if you know what I mean. ( In other words, one would need to single click on the "forums", "coupons" or "research" tabs to get the menus to come down ).
I'm kinda a little bit of a spastic mouse user and not always accurate with where my mouse ends up. But I do love the ability to use the drop-down menu, just don't want it floating down all the time, unannounced and uninvited, if one just hovers the mouse over the tabs, as then I have to click somewhere else to get it to go away!
So......No hover drop down menus, just a clickable drop down menu, please.
:D

So is this forum even worth posting to? Does anyone with decision making powers read the users' opinions?

yes, mr sd reads every post here. he doesn't always make posts saying it will be added or not.. sometimes things are going to be added, but just way down on the priority list. a lot of the suggestions have been added.

I actually like the hover menus.
But I agree that there needs to be a search option near the top. In the same line as the new float menus, there's plenty of space for a search box.

Worry not, we've heard you. Historically, we like to give some time to the community to think about the new changes. More than just a few days at least, before we go around making changes to new updates since most people are just negative to change in general and it takes them time to get acclimated.
We've also got to account for the fact that these opinions are from a very small vocal minority, compared to the vast amount of users who are enjoying the new functionality. That doesn't mean however we're just ignoring you. We take all of the issues and suggestions seriously, but we also have to weigh the options for the benefit of the entire community. Rest assured though! we are working on making a few updates that would probably satisfy you in regards to your search woes :). This will take longer to roll out because its a more drastic change.
P.s. in our original design, we had the menus on click, but after several usability tests, it was determined that the majority of people complained because they had to make an extra click just to use the menus. So you can see how it is a double edged sword as we can never make everyone happy.

In all seriousness - a one or two second delay on the drop down menu would be divine. That way it would still be functional but less of an annoyance for those of use who "oopsie" past the buttons.

Now I am screeching at my beloved SD...

I love 'em. So be it.
Well I do like the drop down menu. I just don't like it when the menu drops down when I'm trying to click one of the forum links.
Here are my suggestions:
Seperate the drop down menu from the forum links (usercp, search, etc) by moving the drop down to the very top, or moving the forum links to below the welcome message.
Since the drop down in centered, if you move search and new posts to the left, instead of under the new menu, it will decrease the number of times it gets in the way. Granted people with lower resolutions would most likely still have a problem.
Implement some sort of delay, or require a click to dropdown
