Ok, well, ever since CLER has gotten more active, based on suggestions and approval from administration, I have decided to start this.

Here is where you signup for it: http://www.hbs.edu/cler/

click here (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=95323&do=personalsticky&t=610876) to sticky it to top of the page!

I will post few things i noticed in the last year with CLER, if you have something to add, use wiki and if it's worthwhile i'll add to OP.

1. You MUST provide SSN or other means for them to track $. Don't like it, fine, but it won't change.

2. Most of their studies have different requirements and limited slots, so do not wait, as soon as you see new study posted, signup and let others know.

3. Payments are usually done in Amazon GC or Money order(sometimes a choice).

4. I recieved last payment within 10 days of completing the study, in past, on average it was 3-4 weeks, so give it time.

5. Their studies are full of tricky things, if you took the last study you would know what i mean, so always do them HONESTLY or you will be removed.

6. As usual, unless specifially told, always assume that survey contents/topics are confidentical. Do not talk about the details, as it will influence others!

You have to provide a SSN so they can report the $ they give you as part of your income to the IRS. You will pay taxes on the things you get from them....

You have to provide a SSN so they can report the $ they give you as part of your income to the IRS. You will pay taxes on the things you get from them....

You and they are only required to report this income if you earn more than $600 a year. Chances are, you wont be earning that much. They are just covering their bases in the rare case that someone actually does and the IRS calls them on it.

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99921,00.html

You may be required to file information returns to report certain types of payments made to independent contractors during the year. For example, you must file Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income, to report payments of $600 or more to persons not treated as employees (e.g. independent contractors) for services performed for your trade or business. For details about filing Form 1099 and for information about required electronic or magnetic media filing, refer to information returns.

You have to pay taxes from any source that pays you over 600.... I just make sure I never hit that magical number with any of the companies I work with :)

Nope. They are only required to report to the IRS if they pay you 600.00 or more. YOU are required to report ANY income you get from them. Just because they aren't responsible to reporting it doesn't mean that you're not required to do so.

Of course most people won't report it....but that doesn't mean it's legal.

600.00 just means there's a paper trail formed and sent to the IRS which means you can't avoid reporting it. Legally you have to report ANY and ALL income you earn. Just because no one tells on you doesn't mean you're off the hook on reporting it.

If you ever get audited and they look at your bank account statements....better hope you didn't deposit those checks or you'll have to explain why you didn't report that income.

Thanks as always iconian ... these studies usually take longer to pay out but we are sometimes so used to the quick pay from Stanford that we forget that just because it is the internet it does not mean quick.. They are one of my favs in surveys !!! Always be honest and always be fair...for those of us that honor these studies where ever they are from, it will help all of us in the end !

These surveys still come about so irregularly, I prefer that this board went back to the heads up threads for each individual one. Perhaps now that school is in session there will be a need for this, but, well, its not the case as of now.

I just have to add... why do we have this thread? It was just brought to my attention that if you have a post that would belong here that it can be posted and not be considered a repost outside of this thread?

So I can see a post here and run post it in the main thread and it will not be a repost?

I kinda wondered myself when i went to post this originally, but i didn't want to make anyone upset by posting it twice... so i just figured i'd put it in the CLER thread... :) i've got it as a sticky on my profile, so i see it all the time anyway. It's up to y'all, i think more people would be likely to see it if it was posted in the main place, rather than this thread. but either way's fine w/ me. I'll find it either way. :)

On the day of the study, Wednesday (10/3/07) around 11:30 am (EST), you will receive an email from cler@hbs.edu. This email will contain the URL link to the on-line survey as well as a unique 3-digit passcode. You will have until Thursday (10/4/2007) at 7:30 pm (EST) to complete this survey. During the survey, you will be prompted to enter your unique 3-digit passcode. You must enter the passcode exactly as it appears in the email in order to receive payment.

If you still have the page up, click "back" on your computer screen and click "Click here"(or something like that...it's a link) instead of the "Done" button. I did the same thing at first but then hit back and noticed the other link.

Chloerlz
10-03-2007, 11:24 AM
You guys after the vaccum questions, it should be another set of questions on wine, after the wine questions there's a page that says click the "click here" button (in orange) and at the bottom it still has options to click on "prev" or "done"...you dont click the done button because that is NOT a next button. I think they did that to see if people were really reading the survey or not but once you click on the orange link, you have to reenter your passcode and then it asks you a few more questions. At the end, it says thanks for your participation...once you click on that new link, it closes out survey monkey so if you guys are getting the survey monkey homepage, you did it wrong.

Wow, that was sneaky of them. I answered the survey honestly and was paying attention, but I guess I didn't catch that part. Thanks!

What am I supposed to do? I clicked on my email link and it takes me right back to the surveymonkey page, like i'm done.

And how am I supposed to have done something wrong?????? I was answering questions, and being honest, clicked the button to go to the next page, and when I came back from the fridge from when I was getting a drink, it was goen, and the surveymonkey page was up. **edit** just read the previous post better, so they were making sure I was paying attention, and now i''m screwed out of a survey payment. Hmmm,my survey was a little different but I did have to enter my passccode again after the vaccum questions.

Hmm...I just know mine asked on 3 different products, they might have changed how they asked questions per person but on that last page it says "you will be asked to re-enter your passcode on the next page" or something and then you see that link.

I can see how if you are skimming and reading, you might just click "done" thinking it was the next button. I was about to click it too!!

Also I may be wrong guys, but alot of surveys I have done lately have put tricks in them to make sure people are really reading (not to say you guys ARENT reading because I know you get so use to taking surveys, you just click without thinking on blank pages), it might really be a error. I just know once I clicked on that link, it was no longer hosted by survey monkey so I assume if that's the ending you get it might be wrong.

this is ridiculous... There is NO PAGE at all that ever said anything about hitting "Click Here" in my survey... There was NO LINK at the end of the survey other than the <<Prev & Done... This is aggravating. I even read every word carefully and made sure i followed every direction...

Maybe there were 2 different surveys sent out? because on the initial first screen, it talked about filling out a questionnaire, and then having to evaluate 2 different product scenarios, which i did. I gave my opinion for the 2 scenarios... i can only hope there were 2 different versions of the study. :grr:

okay so for those who are unsure, it did ask demographic questions before it ended.

After that one survey I did with the trick questions (push "6" for this answer) I am careful in all surveys.

the first page of the survey before we go in, clearly states that you will need to click on the 'click here' link.

I read my entire intro page and it did not say that at all.
My survey also ended abruptly and there was definitely no visible link. It could have to do with browsers too. Sometimes not all "buttons" or graphics show in all browsers. I know that I did not just overlook it. I was reading everything.

A friend of mine did the survey, did have that message in the intro, did have the link, but his survey was about 3 totally different products than mine was.

Ok I have to say it honestly I am tired of having the main heads up for cler thread and then people just randomly posting them in the freebies too....... I have to keep clicking everywhere and comparing it to the studies I have already done from this thread and blah blah... I dont understand why it cant all be in one spot... stanford is? Pinecone is?

10-03-2007, 02:11 PM
I had no choices of buttons to click at the end but "Previous" and "Next"...then it took me to the surveymonkey page. Hope I actually get credited for completing it and get paid! :D

Same thing happened to me.

My survey was like yours - it just ended abruptly and no link at all to click. Like what Clothos had.

10-03-2007, 02:18 PM
this is ridiculous...

:grr:

My page said evaluate TWO products as well and mine ended like yours so we will see. I still have not heard back from them. Will post when/if I do.

I sent them an e-mail about what happened yesterday with the survey. This is what I wrote to them: "I tried to this survey today but I'm not sure if it went through or not. I was answering questions about a robot vacuum and I clicked NEXT, which ended my survey and took me to survey monkey home page. Can you please let me know if I filled out the survey correctly? If not, can you re-send it to me so I can do it again."

This was their reply:

Thanks for checking in with us about that. I checked with the researchers and they have received your passcode and data. You do not need to take the survey again.

As we noted, we will send you the payment within 2 weeks.

same thing mine said, yay, we get paid!

Maybe they are trying to see who posts on here, and compare the descriptions of surveys?

Maybe I should take my tin foil beanie off, except that is a technique used by some places ( ok mostly the military, lol, still wearing my tin foil hat) it's called a canary trap or something like that. They give everyone a slightly different survey, and then they can trace whos talking by what they say.

Scary.

I guess "be prompt" means make sure you do it in the one day window that we gave you.

I worked as a research assistant at a university before and I can say that there is no need to worry about payment from university studies. All of the studies go through an approval + budget process and the researchers cannot cheat you or they will be in trouble. The only shortcoming that there is generally no rule about the time of payment, which means a researcher can pay you in 2 days, another one can take 2 months, but they will pay. Generally they would not process payments until they check the answers - almost all surveys have control questions in them to make sure that people actually read the questions so once again the payment may take some time but don't worry.

Thank you, got in :) Is a money order different from a check?
not really, you cash it the same way. I buy money orders sometimes, it is a good way to pay people when you don't want to share your bank info, home address, etc with them.

I use it on Ebay sometimes.

You can cash them at banks, and most stores that allow check cashing ( although Wal-Mart won't let me)

I always tell people money orders are like checks, but the funds are guaranteed. and your bank shouldn't charge you a fee to cash them.

FYI not all M.O. are guaranteed, just the USPS ones. I learned the hard way so I no longer get them from check cashing places or grocery stores.

FYI not all M.O. are guaranteed, just the USPS ones. I learned the hard way so I no longer get them from check cashing places or grocery stores.

what do you mean?

all the ones I buy and use and have cashed have been western union ones. i have never had a problem with one. that's why many places tell you to fill out the m.o as soon as you get it, because if it's blank and gets lost, anyone can cash.

so by guaranteed I just meant, you don't have to worry about it "bouncing" or your bank not cashing them.
