I remember this organization from years ago. Back in the 70's when my sister was still living, she always used to donate to them two or three times a year. They were always sending her little things in the mail, such as address stickers and some small Native American things. We're of Native American ( Cherokee ) descent and my sister loved feeling like her donations went to a good "close to the heart" cause. Although they're many different Native American tribes, she felt drawn to all of them. I still have a small Indian design bookmark that she got from them, which I believe is made of some type of shell.
Thanks for the post and for bringing back some nice memories of my sister, who took her own life in 1977. She had her pet charities and this was one of them. I hope a few people here will send in a donation, even a couple dollars or a single dollar bill, if they can afford to, when they receive their requested gift in the mail. It isn't a requirement but if only 2 out of ten people will help by donating a small amount, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

you can also send them your campbells labels for education, that would be nice for people who don't have kids. I use to do that before my kids were old enough for school.

I think they also take boxtops for education. I remember emailing them aout this over a year ago when I had a stack of boxtops for education I didn't need. if you don't regularly donate them or give them to friends, start collectiong them and send them to a place like this twice a year. it really makes a difference.
My personal rule about addy labels is this: I donate between $3 and $10 depending on the quality and number of laels sent WHEN I REQUEST THEM and after I get the labels. I do not feel obligated to donate if a charity buys my mailing address from a "likely donor" list and just sends them out of the blue. Even so, If they send me labels a really love and will use, I try to send what I can. My favorite label senders are: Cystic Fibrosis Society (rose designs), North shore Animal league (who doesn't luv puppies and kitties?), Humane society here in Los Angeles, and Susan komen Foundation (breast Cancer research)
if you want to use my personal 'rule' go ahead. Some charities get the labels and printing for free while others budget for it as part of their new donors compaigns. I feel donating if you request them is a good rule of thumb. After that, you really can't send $$ to them all because you will start getting free labels from dozens of groups. Give to the ones you care about the most and ask the others not to send you anymore or to stop sending if they mispell - that way they save money.

I am very sorry about your sister. This is also one of my very favorite charities. They have great Christmas cards which I purchase every year. Red Cloud High School on Pine Ridge Rez is another favorite. They put out a beautiful calender each year which I buy as Christmas gifts.

Very nice. Thanks so much! I noticed on the site the list of things that people can donate including kids clothes, sheets and other things that they need for the kids there. This is a great way to donate without sending actual cash if you are not able to.

Hi, I believe that this is a GOOD organization that helps people. I DON"T believe that anyone should just send them a request for free items without sending in a donation. That is NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!!!! Please if you ask for something PLEASE give them a donation. That is not fair. it is a great place. I have been donating these people money for years now.

I believe they also welcome donations of Boxtops for Education - I'd have to email them to confirm that but I recall sending them a big pack of them a couple of years ago and getting a lovely thankyou letter. If you are short on cash but long on box tops for education, they are worth 10 cents each to the schools that do the program!

Hi,
I run a non profit organization and have worked in this field since I was a teen.
There are a great many people who take advantage of non profits and request these items.
IN one instance alone I am personally aware of more than 500 REQUESTED free gifts were sent out. 120 brought in donations. Average donation is about 30.00 It wound up costing this organization almost 5000.00 That money came out of a hunger relief program which meant quite a few hungry people.
The costs of this type of campaign are not limited to the items. Postage, employees facility costs all go into the costs.
If you do not like the work of an organization or are not interested in supporting them do not ask for a donation. You go on their list as a donor. They continue to spend money to send you updates and ask for donations. You will easily wind up costing them more than you ever sent them.

that is such a peculiar way to run things, imho. Why would you spend more than you'd know you'd bring in? Why would the money for freebie items come from the food budget ?? shouldn't that come from donations (of free items) and such, not hey, so and so wants a key chain, and take it out of the operations budget or food budget -- just odd.
___________
Staying on topic,
I don't think this school operates like you ran yours -- they do seem to have a handle on what they are bringing in and spending asking for donations. I trust they are continuing to spend the money donated on the kids, and not the situation you described. They do help a lot of underpriviledged children, and the people who run it truly seem to care about the kids, and the kids seem to be in a much better situation at the school. In the summer they still need donations because they keep some of the children year-round, which is wonderful as well.

I also received these quite a while ago. I get a Xmas card every year from the school and I send them something in return.
