I applied about a month and a half ago for their wear test program, and today I just received the shoes! And from searching of the models available it looks like this one is brand new MT700 shoe, I am excited as I only wear New Balance.

Also note: The footwear, apparel or accessory tested by me remains the sole property of New Balance and must be returned upon request.
Requirements for becoming a tester:
Footwear Size Information
You MUST be professionally measured with a Brannock Device.
What is a Brannock Size?
A Brannock Device is a foot-measuring tool. The Brannock Device measures heel-to-ball of forefoot length, heel-to-toe length, and forefoot width. It converts these measurements into a suggested shoe size. When applying to become a tester, please indicate the length of your longest foot and the width of your widest foot. Select About, then FAQs for more information.
That's one of those foot measuring things at the mall. Go and get measured before filling out the form. You'll save yourself some time and trouble.
Link to the tester FAQ:
http://weartest.newbalance.com/Learn/Faq.asp?
* As with the Nike shoes testing program, please be aware that these shoes may come with special numbers or markings on them. Some people have been upset that the shoes are not always fashionable and must be returned. Returned shoes are examined and compared with your reports about comfort and durability.

Well, if you were a athlete, or like me, sick of paying out the behind for kids shoes, even if you have to return them, the benifit is in not having to PAY for shoes that get worn out quick.
My roomate was runner, and he would wear out a good pair of running shoes every few months. Soeaking of him, I think I will send him the link, lol

Unless there's an incentive ( cash ) for testing them, or one gets to keep the shoes, I can't see the point. Like I've said previously about testing computers or printers or pretty much anything....either I should get to keep the product itself as an incentive for testing it and reporting my findings ( via survey, etc. ) or they should pay me to test it. Just my own personal feelings, not meaning to sound rude, just saying.

When i first read about returning the shoes, i was kind of standoffish too.. But then i thought about it.. The reason they might ask for the shoes to be returned is to make sure that they have been worn for the time youve claimed (Average inspection of course) and then they may send out a new pair once they verify that you have provided accurate information, instead of saying you have, and having the shoes still in the box, never worn.
Anyone have any thoughts on that?

my 6yr old got her shoes last week(I just signed her up a month ago)..really cute white/pink/silver running shoes...she wears them for a month and sends them back--then they send another pair and so on---for kids it's perfect since their feet are always changing/growing so to me its new shoes every month or so for her......I also signed her up for Nike and we got the affy to send back last week(signed up BF for golf shoes from Nike and he hasnt heard anything)

12-07-2007, 11:02 AM
Yeah, my thoughts on why they want them back is to see how they wear, where they wear down first and where they my need to make any changes or reinforce... How pissed would you be if you paid $80-100 for a pair of shoes and a month later you had wore though the soles... or through the leather upper?
blaze1one
12-07-2007, 11:14 AM
Well I got home to take a look at what they sent. It is a wear test on the outsole one is rubber, and the other rice husk. I have no idea why rice husk but maybe to be more environmentally friendly in manufacturing their shoes.
I am going to try sending an email to the testing person to see if there is any compensation whatsoever, like maybe a free pair of any shoes, after testing 3 or 4 pairs yourself.
I will keep everyone updated as soon as I receive a reply.

The reason they want them back is so they can SEE the wear on them...
I keep seeing lots of people posting WHY the company wants the shoes sent back, as if they need to explain it to those of us who passed this up, but I don't recall seeing anybody who actually ASKED why or even much of anyone who was confused as to why. Most of us are bright enough to already know why, but just didn't feel the trials would benefit us in any way. I have about 30 pairs of shoes already, and I don't need to "borrow" shoes from someone, wear them awhile, use up my free time to answer questions about how they fit and felt and then at the end of a certain time, have to give back the shoes. Too much like high school when you borrowed your girlfriend's or your sister's clothes and she borrowed yours. :lmao:
Many of us were simply stating that if we did not get to keep the product and got no cash incentive, we felt it was not a good use of our time. I still stand by that statement, although if I had small children who's feet regularly change in size, this would indeed be a nice offer, but just not for an adult like me.

Hi guys. Long time lurker...
I have done some wear-testing for Nike in the past. I ran in about three or four pairs of shoes for them. There was never any incentive other than not having to put the miles on your own shoes. For me, it was well worth it, because I have been doing some marathon training and go through shoes every couple of months, so it basically saved me a couple hundred dollars!!! Now, for the casual runner, walker, of whatever you use the shoes for, it might not be as important, but still kind of cool to see what new shoes might be coming out and being able to have a say in how to make them better for future consumers.
I haven't received anything from New Balance yet, but I currently run in them so I hope I get chosen as well. I'd love to try out some new versions of shoes and see if something would suit me better than what I run in now and would love to be able to help make better running shoes for people who run high mileage like I do!
That's my two cents. :)

I've been a Nike tester for 2 years, and have gone through 4 shoes with them.
For me, it saves $100 each time since running shoes cost about that per pair. I go through about one every 6-8 weeks so it is perfect.
Sending them back isnt a problem since they usually smell pretty bad and are beat up

NOPE
Once in a while you may get the production version of the shoe you tested but you have to do multiple tests/wears for this to happen.
I did a pair for me and 2 pairs for dd. I got nothing and had to send the shoes back. The shoes they sent were butt ugly so I wouldn't have wanted to keep them.

I have been a wear tester for a couple of years now. And love it! After testing many different sneakers they told me I was able to keep a particular pair when I was finished testing them out. The program is so easy. They send you the questionare and the prepaid UPS label to send the box back to them.

I've been in the NB testing program for the past 3 years now. Initially, it was very exciting, but after testing the nth iteration of the same old X-trainer model, it got a bit tiring. And, imo, NB shoes are hit or miss. On the other hand, I wish I could be an Asics shoe tester...
Good luck ya'll. It's always nice to have a box from UPS sitting on your doorstep out of the blue.

I agree with you! Lots of non-runners in this thread. My guess is that they want to see what a pair of shoes looks like after 100/200 miles have been logged on them.
Since I personally have a pile of 3 sets of running shoes (actually, New Balance brand since they make Narrows that are actual narrow sized) in various stages of being broken in, this sounds like a great program. You are *supposed* to hang up the shoes every 400 miles or so. If you run 5 times a week, this can be a new pair of shoes every 4 to 6 months for a hack runner like me. Even if you can keep them for 2 months, it will save about $50. Sounds like a great freebie to me, especially since I just started marathon training last month, so I KNOW I'm going to log a lot of miles on the shoes in the next 10 months.

I signed my oldest son up and about a week and a half later, a pair of shoes came via UPS. It was a total surprise, because we never received an email or anything. The shoes he got are really cute, and it is a shame we have to give hem back, but hopefully they will send more for him to test. He burns through shoes so this is great foir him. I have since signed up my other 3 boys as well, hopefully this will help out a little.

Question for anyone here who has been a New Balance tester for awhile now. I received my first pair of shoes to test today and it states that they must be returned back on 2/5/08. It seems like a really quick test being less than a month. Does this mean once you have tested your first pair of shoes with them and answered the surveys you will get another pair to test or is it a sporadic thing?
Thanks for your help with this!

I attempted to sign on to the New Balance test site last night (Have to have them email me my user id) but noticed they made it very clear that you are not able to keep the product nor do they give you any compensation for being a tester. That is not a problem for me as I look at it this way. I get to wear for a couple of weeks some cool and comfortable sneakers that normally I would not be able to afford so easily. LOL!

yes, i'm sending them back in about 4 days.....
i hate to part with them tho....
and the questions are very focused on the feel and comfy-ness, not on style.
by the way, my shoes were 5809 running shoes, with white mesh with gray background... looks really cool with minimal red lines.....
i checked out the site and 5807s were the latest shoes they had which came out in mid/late 2007.
i didn't even realize that it has "sample not for resale" on the inside.....
i hardly ran in them but i wear them everyday whenever i go out... so it's pretty cool.....
lots of people asked me where i got the shoes too since they think it's very nice.

I work for the New Balance Wear Test program. I do not intend to monitor this site with any regularity, so please don't post questions for me as I may not be able to respond in a reasonable timeframe.
Let me start by saying that I think most of the information posted in this thread is accurate and I want to thank those people who took the time to cut-and-paste relevant information about the program from our website! I also want to thank all of you who have submitted an application and/or are currently testing with us!
Just about every question being asked in this forum is addressed on our website. On the right side of the Learn More page you will find answers to all sorts of questions if you open and take a few moments to read each of the links.
That said, let me address some recurring themes:
1. Please do not discuss or post any images of the test products! All participants in the program sign a legally binding agreement which prohibits disclosing any information about the test products. To protect our intellectual property, we must insist that all participants follow this very important rule. This requirement extends even to seemingly innocuous things like model numbers, name of or purpose for a test, etc.
It is absolutely OK to discuss how the program works and what to expect; just don't talk about any specific tests or test products.
2. The shoes do indeed have to be returned at the end of the test period. We send the shoes out to testers in good faith, explaining very thoroughly on the website the pros and cons of being involved in the program. We expect all participants to reward our faith in them by following the rules. (Of course, not returning the test products as requested is ..well...stealing, but that is too negative and no one wants me to go there, right!?)
When the shoes are returned, we inspect each and every pair against a demanding set of standards while reading the related feedback forms that each tester submits. After we are done with them, the test products are stored for research and reference purposes for several years. After that, they are sorted and donated to charities which then distribute the products to those in need, primarily in developing nations. The program is a win-win-win situation. Testers get to use and abuse the test products instead of their own shoes/apparel, we learn how to make better products, and eventually someone less fortunate than most of us gets some worn but still useful shoes/clothes to keep.
3. To make sure you receive all email communications from the program, applicants and participants should add INFO@NEWBALANCE.COM to their email address books.
4. Applications are reviewed and activated on a rolling, as-needed basis. As each test product is delivered to our team, we scour our database of existing testers for appropriate matches. If none exist, we then open our search to include applicants as well. Some applicants have their accounts activated within days, while others may never have their account activated. There are dozens of variables that go into tester selection, and we simply can't say when an account may be activated. (Note - Junior (kids) accounts are an exception. ALL Junior accounts are activated soon after they are submitted so that parents can log in and keep their children's shoe sizes up to date.)
5. We grade testers and as you would expect, testers with better grades generally get to test more often. We primarily consider three things when grading: (1) was feedback submitted on time and were the test products returned on (or within a day or two) of the product return date; (2) were the test products used as instructed and were they used often; (3) is the written feedback thorough, detailed and constructive (can we use the information to correct problems and make better products)? One word answers to complex questions are not going to result in a good grade. If you want to increase your chances of testing more often, be a good tester!
6. Test durations can be from 1 day to 12 or more weeks. Early prototype tests usually last around 4 weeks, while products further along in the development process are usually tested for about 8 weeks.
I think that covers most of it for now. The NB Wear Test program is a great program, enjoyed by thousands, with some testers having worked with us for nearly two decades, but as many others have said, this program is not for everyone. Some people will self-exclude, some will want to participate but never get a chance, while still others will be removed from the program by us. To avoid disappointment or confusion, please read the information on the website before committing to the program. If you do choose to participate, I hope we are able to give you a chance, and if and when that chance presents itself, we will do our best to help you enjoy the program! Thanks for reading!

Yes they pay postage back, keep all the paper you get with it because you will need to use it . And keep the boxes the shoes came in .

They are really nice! Only problem is I want to keep them!
I love New Balance shoes, plenty in my closet.
However, I know they are only borrowed and I will send them back.
Do you think they will know if I send them one of my old pairs instead? LOL
Thanks OP for the info!!!!!

I work for the New Balance Wear Test program. I do not intend to monitor this site with regularity, so if you post any questions for me, please be patient for my response.
On the right side of the Learn More page you will find answers to all sorts of questions if you take a few moments to read each of the links.
After that, they are sorted and donated to charities which then distribute the products to those in need.

If you do choose to participate, I hope we are able to give you a chance, and if and when that chance presents itself, do your best as a tester and have fun! Thanks for reading!

I got Mountain Boots a few weeks back. They are very cute & I have had ppl ask me where to get them.
After reading what they do with the returned shoes I think they should allow us to keep them.
It's nice to give to the needy but they sit in a closet for several years!!
I can bet that NB has other shoes to give to the needy other than our tester models.
We should keep them after we wore them. After all we tested them.

javagurl - The tested shoes are inspected immediately upon return to NB at the conclusion of a test, and then kept for a minimum of 2 years, during which time they are frequently referenced for research and quality assurance/verification purposes. After that, some/many of the shoes are donated, en mass, to charity, while some portion of the shoes are retained in the wear test shoe library. (Just the other day, we pulled about 50 pairs from the library from tests conducted in 2001! )
Even if we chose to try to annually reunite 10,000+ test shoes with their testers from 2 years earlier, we know that most testers would not be interested in getting these old shoes back. There are additional reasons behind our decision as to why we donate the tested shoes to charity as the last step in their lifecycle, and I won't go into all of them here but I can say that I this is something the company is committed to and of all our options, this is the one we feel is the most socially responsible in that it does the most good for the greatest number of people.

My neighbor told me I received a package earlier today but when I came home from work the package was torn open and there was nothing in the box. The only reason why I believe these are the shoes is because of the address from label on the actual box. I think I may have had my shoes stolen... what do I do? You can go to http://www.ups.com/ to see all the locations close to you. "Locations" button is listed across the top of the page. All of the Staples and Office Depot stores in my area have UPS desks that ship, you may try one of these stores if you have one close by. You can also arrange for a pick-up at your home or work place, but they will charge a fee for coming out, it's like $5. or $10. not sure! Or you could do what I did when I returned my shoes! Keep the box in your car, flag down a UPS driver if you see one out and about, the driver will gladly take the package free of charge! Hope this helps! :)

How do I return test products?
To return the test products at the end of the test period, please follow these instructions:
1. Put the product and any associated paperwork back into the original shipping box (or any appropriate box if you have lost the original);
2. Place the enclosed pre-paid return-shipping label over the original shipping label on the front of the original box (or any appropriate box if you have lost the original); and
3. Ship the package using United Parcel Service (UPS).
To ship products via UPS, you may:
* Give the package to any UPS driver;
* Take it to any UPS Store or shipping center;
* Take it to your place of work if UPS provides daily pick-up/drop-off service at that location; or
* Call 1-800-PICK-UPS (1-800-742-5877) to arrange for a pick-up at your home (if you choose this option you will likely be charged a $10.00 fee by UPS; you will NOT be reimbursed by New Balance).
UPS will also pick up packages from many Staples stores. For more information, go to www.ups.com to find a drop-off shipping location near you.

I got mine tested them ,returned them and filled out the feedback for each part.
I have to say though the ones I tested were for running and they were not comfortable at all when running. They felt fine when walking but when jogging they didnt have near enough cushion to support running on the road. I'm only 185 and I would feel sorry for someone that weighed 250 pounds buying them to run in

somerandomguy - This is not a good start to your testing career, in several ways!
I can assure you that when your account was activated, an email announcing this fact was sent to the email address we have on file for you. This activation email also contained your UserID and Password. More than likely your email provider tagged this automated email as spam and put it in your junk mail folder, which you (understandably) missed. During the application process, it clearly states that to assure that you receive all email from the program, including the above mentioned activation notice, you should add INFO@NEWBALANCE.COM to your address book.
Further, the Test Summary sheet that was in the box with your test shoes provides concise instructions on how to proceed with a test, the date(s) feedback is due and how to contact your test administrator if you have any problems (ex. you didn't receive your ID/password, or you have concerns about a shoe).
As a general rule, if testers follow the instructions on the website and the Test Summary form, they should have no reason to blame NB for missing a feedback date. But that said, we understand that 'life' happens and it isn't always possible to meet every feedback date required as part of a test, and we accommodate for that, but that is separate from not being prepared because of not following instructions.
Regarding the test shoes you received: You indicate that you will not run in them. If you signed up to test running shoes, received a running shoe, and the instructions indicate that you are to run in them, but you don't 'want' to, it is probably best that you return the shoes immediately and resign from the program. As you know from reading this discussion board, there are many people who would like a chance to participate in the program and if you aren't willing to fulfill your obligation, please let us know so that we can fill your spot with someone who is more understanding and open to the nature and purpose of this testing program.
From the website (under Learn More > Considerations):
You May Need to Test a Product You Don't Like
It may not happen for years or it could happen with your first test. Nevertheless, it WILL happen. Whether the product is the wrong weight or you just don't like the way it looks, you are still required to test it according to the instructions*. This is one of the sacrifices that you make when you agree to become a tester. If you are ever unable to complete a test for any reason (travel, injury, etc.), you are required to contact the NB Wear Test Team immediately for additional instructions.
*Testers are not required to continue with a test if using the product results in discomfort or fear of injury.
I'm sorry to call you out in public like this, but I am using your post as an opportunity to address posts/attitudes that are shared by others. Your view point, while discouraging, is not unique. This is one of the reasons that we go into so much detail on the website; we want everyone to understand what they are committing to when the agree to join the program!
Finally, if you choose to stay in the program (and we hope you do), you should contact your test administrator for assistance if you have any other questions on how to proceed with your test.

somerandomguy - This is not a good start to your testing career, in several ways!

Actually what happened is the tag was labeled wrong...they weren't running shoes (as I had thought). Running in these would have destroyed the shoes and probably my knees too. If I had gone by the erroneous tag, I would have made a bigger mistake.
ALSO, if you read any of the other pages in this thread, there were lots of other cases where we were never notified of being accepted into the program and the shoes just showed up. Are you sure that there aren't other issues with your "automatic" emails? You "called me out" for something that wasn't my fault, I check my spam folder regularly, there was no email. I got the problem resolved with my test coordinator and don't need to have information copied to me from your website, I am more than capable of reading. Better yet instead of trying to make me look stupid, you could have sent me a PM...

somerandomguy -
(1) you're right, I probably should have sent a PM, but my thinking was that you posted a public message and thus a public response was justified, not so much to resolve a particular issue for you (with over 15,000 testers, I can't scour the internet for all the posts concerning the program and try to resolve them one by one), but to use one specific instance (yours) that is reflective of a bigger issue shared by more than one person on this board. Copying from the website wasn't an attempt to 'educate' you personally, but to demonstrate again that the website does indeed address most questions and if everyone interested in joining the program would take a few minutes to review it, many of the new tester misconceptions and disappointments could be averted.
(2) If you are embarrassed, I apologize. I personally have trouble grasping this sentiment in this setting (you are completely anonymous afterall), but the lesson is learned and I will be more sensitive in the future.
(3) Not receiving auto emails: Whenever we have gone back and checked, in EVERY instance, we have been able to verify that an activation notice has indeed been sent when a tester account has been activated. In most cases, we have been able to verify that the email was marked as spam and in most cases was still in a spam folder but we also know that some of the announcements went to email addresses that are no longer active or were phony to begin with. We are extremely confident that the system is functioning as it should, but nonetheless, once a month, we take a look at three accounts for which people claim they never received their automatic emails. To date, the system has not been found to be at fault. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen but to date, we can't find or reproduce an error relating to this function. Thus, it may seem like the shoes are 'just showing up' but in reality, most people are indeed getting their activation notices, and in those instances when they are not, the problem isn't related (directly at least) to a problem with the system.
(4) After the initial activation/test, testers are not notified that they have been selected for any additional tests prior to the shoes being sent. When the system was being designed, feedback from the beta group indicated that testers did not want to be notified when a test was being sent out as it didn't really affecting anything in a meaningful way. The beta group preferred to have less email from us than more, asking only that reminder notices go out when feedback is late (something we didn't implement initially (trying to honor the sentiment that 'the fewer the emails the better') but we will probably be turning this function on this month) . We revisit this issue on a monthly basis. For the time being, we will probably stick with the current process.
(5) I'm glad you were able to resolve the problem and of course, I'm sorry for and disappointed by our mistake regarding the label. We have a zero-mistakes goal for the group, and while we seldom live up to that in our monthly reviews, it is nonetheless our goal and we are disappointed in ourselves when we make simple mistakes that impact the performance of the testers, add confusion to the process, and/or do something that reflects badly on the brand (like 'calling' someone 'out' on a discussion board!!!!). ;)

Still waiting and hoping that I get to test a pair, or better yet, that hubby gets to test a pair. He had back surgery and his doc recommended New Balance. He has two pair already but I'd love for him to test more of them.

I got some crazy orange/black/gray/white shoes that they claim or for running...i'm not even gonna try it lol. Thing is, I never got a login/password or even anything saying I was accepted, so I already missed my first report date.
Wow, that is not so nice of you. I applied, I think, a year ago, never was chosen:( I usually buy myself 'puma', but both, my DH and DS wear NB and I can tell you that this is a great brand!
I wish at least one of us gets into this program. I would be so exited!
I wonder if I can reapply...

NB Wear Test Team,
New Balance used to send me shoes regularly to test. They called me to send back a pair early, this was in September. I haven't heard back from them since. Does this mean I was dropped from their program? Thank you.

i applied for myself and my daughter, too bad there is no password for my daughters registration, as i need to change her shoe size, I could have sworn it states when signing up for children that the information is processed so that you can update your childrens shoe size. Did I misread something? Or not understand something?

Give them time. They recently revamped the program entirely within the last 6 months. You used to have to mail in the forms and now you can submit your info online.
New Balance is the only shoe brand that makes shoe models for specific foot, ankle, medical problems. I'd be grateful to get in on this but my Ross just started carrying their high end shoes in the $20 range. No biggie.

I've been so disappointed with my old running shoes since I had to return my wear test pair (they are an older pair of NB, not high-performance running shoes like the ones I received) that I decided to bite the bullet and buy a pair from Amazon.
I managed to find the model one step below the ones I tested, so I used the gift cards I had stored up and placed my order. Hopefully I can get back to comfortably running soon!

Just had to return my pair. I absolutely loved the fit! I wore them solid the whole test period. My only complaint, my feet sweat in them and not enough ventilation. My feet don't sweat in any other of my shoes!
Yes, I would still purchase them!

I pretty much own almost all New Balance shoes. I have a couple of the factory outlets near me and got hooked on their shoes years ago. I love the fact that they make a wide range or shoes in 4E unlike many other shoe companies.
That being said, what the heck is up with the new, I broke up with running campaign they are doing? I have a friend who works at New Balance and I guess they even send them corporate emails from "running" as if running were actually a person. They also encourage them to leave voice mails on their line with something to the effect of "I'm not in the office right now because I am hanging out with running".

Thanks for reading!

kbabe and others,
We have fallen a bit behind on activating junior applications. There are indeed 277 applications awaiting activation, but we on the plus side have activated 2984 junior applications since 1/1/08. I would anticipate that the 277 pending applications will be made active by the end of the day today (4/18/08).
If you do not receive an email containing your child's UserID and password by 4/19, we may not have your current/correct email address on file, and/or you may not have added INFO@NEWBALANCE.COM to your address book and the activation notice was sent to your junk mailbox instead of your inbox.
Either way, instead of posting here, use the Contact Us link on the Wear Test website to let us know that you did not receive an activation notice. In your message, please make sure to include the name of the child(ren) on the account in question. (Include the first and last name of the child; we have noticed that many children do not share the same last name as the guardian and since we do our search es primarily by last name, having both first and last names helps make us much more efficient).
And remember, everything I just said relates only to Junior applicants; adult applications are reviewed and activated only on an as-needed basis. Thanks!!

WOW!!! My son got a pair yesterday, and they are SO COOL!!!! He was so excited, and I kid you not, we were going to go that afternoon to get some new shoes!!!!!!!! I know he only has them for a month (till the 27th), but it's perfect till the end of school! He wants to keep them, but I said we can't----and if we didn't send them back like we are going to, they would never send us another pair to try again (and probably charge us!) This is such a great thing---thanks for posting!!! Plus, I didn't know I could go in to change his size---luckily these actually fit him still---I signed up with them in November---I ought to do that for my other 2 kids before they are sent a pair that don't fit! :o) New Balance rocks!!!

just signed up.
i signed up as a runner.
i'm a walker/runner but i prefer to wear running shoes when doing so
i hate cross training shoes/walking shoes and i refuse to wear them
i have flat feet but didn't entirely understand the whole arch pronation questionaire part but i tried to do my best.
i'm hoping you don't have to be an expert runner etc to qualify and that if you just run, but aren't a running geek, you can qualify.
i wonder if i can sign my husband up too. (don't get mad, but i didn't see that in the rules but i skimmed it fast--who has time to read a million words anymore?)
if you need to try to figure out the brannock thing you can try to convert the inches on this chart, but it's better to just go get measured: http://brannock.com/cgi-bin/start.cgi/brannock/charts.html
have fun
