Wii Fit mini-games (4/15)
Sure, Wii Fit is about health and lifestyle, but I'm looking forward to the games; I sampled some of the lesser-known modes at the recent Nintendo Media Summit. We've already played with the hula-hoop, soccer, ski-jump, and other basics, so I jumped straight to tightrope walking, floating in a bubble, and other later unlockables. But first, I warmed up with jogging.
* Jogging: One or two players can jog together by stepping off the balance board and sticking a Wiimote in a pocket. I trotted in place while my Mii avatar ran through a sparkling park. Easter eggs and strange events amused me, such as a pack of dogs running straight at -- and past -- me and a hidden, 8-bit Mario graffiti tag. But I decided to phone it in later, shaking the Remote like I was playing Samba. The Nintendo representative and a few onlookers scolded me, but I raced on.
* Tightrope walking: On the balance board, I lifted alternate feet, like I was walking ahead. But I had to keep my weight centered the whole time, otherwise the Mii would tip off the high wire. I was supposed to jump over a chomping bear-trap near the end of the path by crouching and extending my legs. (The motion is similar to the ski jumping game.) But I was off-center before I tried the hop, and just launched myself sideways off the narrow path.
* Bubble in a river: My Mii was trapped in a bubble, and I steered down a narrow, winding river with my leaning. If I grazed the edge of the riverbank, the bubble popped, and I lost. This mode works like a Super Monkey Ball variant. Speaking of which, hey, Sega, how about a Balance Board-tuned version of that game?
* Penguin-eats-fish: With my Mii donning a penguin suit, I stood on a teetering iceberg. From a side view, the platform tilted only left and right with my movements, sending my Mii to those edges. Fish flopped up onto the floe, and I slid in their direction, catching them for points. If I fell off, I automatically hopped back on. And I tried to fling myself up in the air, like tossing ingredients in a skillet, to grab giant fish.
* Snowboarding: I tried slalom skiing first and later rotated the balance board 90° for the snowboard simulation. I shifted my weight downhill to speed up, back to slow down. I bobbed up and down like a drinking bird to steer, and the process was challenging but worked well.
I enjoyed these games, but I also recognized that these activities will get repetitive. Wii Fit will be a new kind of toy-and-trainer once it washes arrives in America May 19, Europe April 25, and Australia May 8. We'll see if the game lasts longer than that Nordic Track you use to hang clothes.
It's official: Wii Fit priced at $90 (4-15)
No big surprises here – Gamestop already let the pricing details slip out from under Nintendo's iron grip – but just as impressions of the game slash exercise peripheral are being published all over the web, the Big N has made it all official. Wii Fit (and the Wii Balance Board of course) will be released on May 19th for a suggested retail price of $89.99.
But if you're not content with just a game and balance board peripheral and you happen to reside in or around the island of Manhattan, Nintendo has a special treat for you.The first 1000 people to drop a $5 pre-order for the gear at New York City's Nintendo Word Store from April 18 - 20 will be rewarded with a Wii Fit t-shirt featuring the likeness of game designer (and weight watcher) Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto. We're really hoping he's rocking the Richard Simmons short shorts, tank top combo.
The Wii Fit Survey is very very well done - particularly the analysis they give afterwards. This is really cool ! Try it out ! (http://www.nintendo.com/wiifit/en/#/home/)

I think most people here(read: traditional gamers) are insulted at the prospect of it. Personally it's definitely on my radar. I read some individual impressions on neogaf and the guys from Japan definitely say it's a workout. Also it's setup in a way that encourages regular usage (I think like workout circuits and what not). I'll go look for the impressions thread.

I don't see many people keeping up with the regimen (though you never know. The competition aspect might keep people going). However, the balance board is unbelievable and has so much potential.

Yeah, I also can't believe the stats alone for this game.. its amazing. (body-mass, your overall performance, monthly stats, etc.)
If they make a snowboarding game with this pad, i'll buy a Wii today!
from what I heard you can't really play "multiplayer" with this game meaning theres no "hot potato" mini-game playing...you have to log off your account and the other person have to sign on with their Mii.
Not sure what happens if you have 2 Wii Fits pads.

In depth impressions on wii fit. The most interesting part is that it tracks your progress and allows you to set bite sized goals to keep you exercising.
Hey its cheaper than a membership to the gym!
Does anyone know how much it costs anyway? (Wii Fit that is, not a gym membership)
Its a Power Pad v2.0!

Interesting idea, but I have doubts it could ever replace my elliptical/rowing/free-weight training :). My Wii is gone anyway-- Perhaps one day when it goes down in price (never?) and I get tired of my PS3, PSP and DS I will pick up another. Chances are I will just play mine at it's new home (gf's nephew) and be done with it.

Not interested, I have DDR for exercising and I switch it up with Para Para Paradise and Samba De Amigo once in a while. Even though there are some games in this software, it looks like a regular workout with a few games thrown in and I have always found that boring (which is why I like DDR so much, it's fun to play so it encourages exercise)

I'm actually excited to get this. Wii Sports is already being used in a lot of rehab & nursing homes and even in my field, physical therapy. Especially with pediatrics it's really great with what it can get patients to do.

I'm sold on it and I don't even own a Wii. I see the potential of the balance board and this thing is going to make Nintendo a lot of money, so there's eventually going to be a lot of software for this one thing kind of like the eyetoy for the PlayStation. This is the Wii system seller for me instead of Zelda or Metroid. Mario is still good to me though. I mean this is by no means a workout or I don't think anybody be able to make a game that will emulate a real workout, but it's going to get your blood running. I try to workout everyday and there are days where I don't want to workout and playing on Wiifit will make you feel less guilty.
gotcheaprice
12-10-2007, 03:00 AM
Lol, I don't even consider DDR a workout. I played it for 2 hrs(between medium and heavy) and I was sweating like crazy, but I wasn't tired. 20 minutes of running could do more to me than the DDR could, so I highly doubt the wii fit will ever make me feel less guilty. I guess it does remind me I need to start conditioning hardcore for season xD

Another strong week of sales in Japan has seen Wii Fit claim the number one spot in its second week, with Nintendo’s exercise themed hardware bundle proving an expected hit in its homeland. Three games sold over 100,000 units this week, with Wii Fit on 150,000, Mario Party DS rising up four places to number two with 107,000 units sold and Namco’s Tales of Innocence on Nintendo DS selling 104,000 units.
The fourth highest new entry of the week was the latest game in the Hot Shots Golf/Everybody’s Golf series on PSP, which continues to one of the format’s biggest franchises with around 87,000 units sold in its first week.
Also new at number seven is Mistwalker’s new role-playing game Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360. The more adult themed adventure sold more than 25,000 less units than the opening week of Mistwalker’s Blue Dragon – which was released at almost exactly the same time last year. However, the 55,000 unit total was still well above average for an Xbox 360 release in Japan.
The final new entry in the top ten was Konami’s baseball simulator Power Pro Kun Pocket 10 on Nintendo DS, with around 54,000 units sold. There were only two PlayStation 3 games in the top thirty with World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 (aka Pro Evolution Soccer 2008) at number twenty-one and new entry Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune at number twenty-four.

Just like at the bottom of her bathtub, she's now got some anti-slip pads she can toss down on her Balance Board. And, we know for certain that falling down while in the shower makes up over 67.629% of senior citizen mortalities* in the United States. Considering how popular the Wii is and how popular Wii Fit is (and is certain to be over here), this accessory is bound to save many lives.
*We only can be expected to research information regarding video games. Everything else we'll probably make up.

Wii Fit feels the burn, sells 1 million in Japan
The Wii Fit exercise machine pressure pad has sold one million units in Japan since its Dec. 1 release. And just like the millions of gym memberships left hanging each year, we have to wonder just how many of these things have actually inspired weight loss.
Wii Fit still doesn't have a US or European release date yet (we're guessing Nintendo has to figure out how to support more than 300 lbs. first), but given Wii's broad demographic, once westernized, Wii Fit could easily become the system's must-have impulse buy – and the first 'game' to actually give us guilt trips.

Wait, it doesn't have a US release date?
I thought it was set for a May release?
And does anyone know if it will work as a scale?
My girlfriend has been thinking about buying a digital scale, but if Wii Fit can measure weight then we'll probably just wait for it.
EDIT: Answered my own question:
Wii Fit uses a unique platform peripheral called the Wii Balance Board that can measure a user's weight and their center of gravity, and calculate their body mass index when told the user's height.

An accessory for the Balance Board you don't own yet
And, just like the anti-slip pads, this one isn't all that useful. You see, it's a mat. Just a mat. For Wii Fit. A long piece of mat that goes below the Balance Board, undoubtedly to protect your knees from being burned by your carpeting or scraped by your tile floors. For those of you with other, more smooth and consistent flooring, we suggest you look elsewhere for something to put down under your Balance Board. Maybe one of your bath towels? Heck, that could probably work for all of you.
Head past the break for some more images.

quote from amazon.com user who had friend bring his wii fit from japan:
You'd be very surprised at how fun Wii Fit is! My Japanese friend is here on business, and he brought Wii Fit over tonight to let my daughter and I try it out. His software disc wouldn't work in our console because of region issues, so we simply plugged in his Japanese console and synced our remotes.
Anyway, Wii Fit IS excercise but it is so entertaining and so well done that it feels more like playing! You definitely break a sweat and get your cardio going, but it's a blast! There's slalom skiing, ski jumps, snowboarding, boxing, step aerobics, hula hoops, Zen meditation, yoga, tightrope walking, soccer, jogging and much more. All of this is done while standing on a bathroom scale type thing (in fact, you can weigh yourself on it and it keeps a fitness record for you!)
I can't wait for this to come out in the US :-)

With nearly 1.3 million units in homes, Nintendo's exercise-themed videogame, Wii Fit, has become one of the fastest-selling Wii titles in Japan. Now, Nintendo of America is gearing up to duplicate the success of its parent company. The U.S. subsidiary revealed this morning that Wii Fit will debut in America on May 19 for "under $100." We chatted with company president Reggie Fils-Aime about NOA's plans for the project. In the paragraphs below, Reggie discusses how many units of Wii Fit will be available at launch, the massive marketing campaign supporting the project, and how many Wii Balance Board-compatible games are already in development.

That price is a bit on the steep side for me, so hopefully it won't be that high. Gamestop does tend to charge more for certain items (I heard they charged $5 more for Professor Layton than most stores). I'm planning to get WiiFit, and I am sure there will be a slight price break on it the day it comes out (like a $5 price break) at Target or Best Buy.

Wii Fit priced for Europe
Europe found out today how much Wii Fit will cost them when it releases on April 25 -- as we continue to bathe in the irony that the Europeans will get an exercise tool a month before the US. The UK will have a Wii Fit membership fee of Ł69.99, while the rest of Europe pays €89.99.
The conversion of those prices to USD ends up being around $130, but Europeans are used to paying more for their games, and although Nintendo has yet to set price for the US, it did say that it would be under $100. So, $99.99?

More Miyamoto on Wii Fit
This morning I spent an hour in a New York City hotel room with Nintendo senior managing director/producer/game designer Shigeru Miyamoto to discuss the U.S. launch of Wii Fit and what it means for Nintendo and the games industry in general. (You can read an excerpt of our chat right here; the rest will be appearing in an upcoming issue of EGM.) I returned this afternoon to take part in a larger press roundtable, where he discussed the development of the Wii's most unconventional game yet and fielded more questions.
While much of his speech was material that's already available in Nintendo's Iwata Asks interview series, the Q&A session offered some intriguing insights. Below are some of the more interesting tidbits Miyamoto had to share with us:
On casual appeal through simplicity:
"With Wii Fit, the way we designed the game is similar to how we designed Wii Sports -- trying to provide the consumer with something that is easy to pick up and easily accessible and gives them the type and variety of experience they're looking for. The point is to make that experience intuitive and easy, which is why we've included a Wii Fit Channel that's downloaded from the disc to the Wii menu that allows you to quickly go in and, without even having the game disc inserted, to do your body check on a daily basis."
On Wii Fit concept approval:
Miyamoto compared the initial skepticism over the viability of Wii Fit as a product to development of "the DS hardware itself. In the process of developing the DS, for a very long time there were a number of people who continued to think that it was not the best idea! But I think currently at Nintendo we have a very good balance between people who have been there for a long time who may be very conservative about what we should be focusing on, and people who are younger and newer and are more excited about trying new things. I think we've managed to create a good balance that leads to interesting discussion."
On Wii Fit DS connectivity:
"We were working on a product like [a DS application that allowed calorie tracking], but the problem we ran into with designing for a worldwide audience is that it's difficult to keep track of all the different foods people around the world have eaten. We also talked about trying to incorporate some form of DS connectivity. We've designed it in a way that by potentially upgrading the Wii Fit Channel we could add upgrades that would allow us to add that kind of functionality... It's even possible a third party could create a fitness game that would be able to read your saved fitness data."
On whether this means Wii Fit will be updated for online functionality:
"Nothing I can talk about today." (Subtext: Wait for E3.)
On localization, or lack thereof:
"Generally I don't think about different countries for the games I'm working on. When I'm trying to develop a game, I develop gameplay to evoke feelings that are common to everyone regardless of where they're from.
"That being said, with Wii Fit it is true that Americans tend to be bigger than Japanese, particularly when it comes to their feet! So early on in developing the balance board we found a rather large American named Reggie to help determine whether the prototypes were big enough for his feet and make changes based on that. Beyond that, there was changing kilograms in Japan to pounds in America. And in fact in the UK, they use 'stone,' which was very strange to me. Really, there's not a lot of changes between the versions.
"Also, in Japan the Wii Fit box says the Balance Board is rated to 136 Kg, or 300 pounds, whereas in America it's rated to 330 pounds, which is 150 Kg. You'd think the board was made stronger for the U.S., but in fact Japan has a little-known law where manufacturers have to submit their scales for government approval. At the time the standard was 300 pounds. Since America doesn't have that law, we're able to state that it can hold 330 pounds despite the fact that the Boards are exactly the same! When you're performing certain actions like jumping and squatting you're putting extra pressure on the board, so in fact it's able to withstand considerable more weight -- probably about 600 pounds."
On peripheral proliferation:
"I think game design that strives to improve the user interface is going to continue to be very import, and we focus very heavily on experimenting in different areas. But one of the concepts behind the Wii hardware was that we wanted it to be a device that belongs in the living room but wouldn't be in the way or clutter up the room. So we don't want to create too many peripherals! Still, we're always experimenting, so it's possible we could come up with something... but we're not actively trying to create anything at the moment."
On other uses for the Balance Board:
"[Balance Board support in other games] will depend on how well Wii Fit sells in America and Europe! But just looking at how many have sold in Japan already opens up the possibility of... well, maybe not a Mario game that requires the Balance Board to play it, but certainly one that takes advantage of it."

Wii Fit distributors getting weekly exercise
Wii Fit must be easier to produce than Wii consoles. Nintendo hasn't been able to rectify the console shortage that has stretched since the Wii launch, but they have gotten their act together in terms of Wii Fit production.
Nintendo U.K. told GamesIndustry.biz that "stock is coming in all the time on a weekly basis." We're surprised that Nintendo is even pretending to be able to keep up with demand, with Wii Fit as enormously popular as it is there. The true test of their production capacity will be the U.S. launch oh May 19th.

Wii Fit preorders jog away from retailers
If you plan on getting Wii Fit without being trampled by Oprah-watching woman types, you better have secured your preorder already, as pickings are getting slim.
Not only has Amazon stopped taking them for Nintendo's popular fitness game, but IGN reports that GameStop has also suspended preorders for the title and Game Crazy is nearly tapped out. GoNintendo notes that Toys R Us (dot com) has run out of preorder stock, too, leaving Walmart's online store as one of the few options left -- although we're sure it's only a matter of time before that ends, as well.
This sounds eerily similar to what happened in the UK a few weeks ago, and now retail copies of Wii Fit seem to be more scarce than holy grails there. The one lesson that we can take away from all this? Nintendo is really good at printing money.

Nintendo to hold Wii Fit event in Central Park
If you live in New York City, take note: Nintendo is set to hold a large launch event for Wii Fit on May 19th, the day of its release. The event will take place at the Merchants' Gate of Central Park, from 8am until 5pm. At the event, famous personal trainer Ashley Borden will be providing a personal training session with the Balance Board and Nintendo's software.
Unlike the recent Mario Kart Wii event, there won't be any kind of tournament or prizes. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't show up, because Nintendo has pledged $5 (up to $25,000 total) to the American Heart Association for every person that gets on a Balance Board and tries Wii Fit out. Exercising while helping people? Sounds like a winning plan to us!

Amazon sells out of Wii Fit preorders
or those of you who did not preorder Wii Fit and think it won't be a problem picking the bundle up on release date through walk-in at your local retail spot, know this: Amazon has cleared through their entire preorder stock in less than a month. It comes out to about 2.5 units sold every minute, according to an Amazon representative that spoke with Joystiq.
It looks like the grim picture painted by Michael Pachter is coming true. Wii Fit fever has caught on, thanks in part to the software and Balance Board, as well as the mainstream media coverage and marketing push from Nintendo. Our advice? If you haven't planned on how you're going to get Wii Fit by now, there's a good chance you won't be able to nab one on release day.

Walmart fattens Wii Fit with $10 gift card
With preorders already sold out at Amazon, we can bet that Wii Fit will share the same success in North America that the game has seen in Europe and Japan. But, is it just soccer moms and casual gamers who are spending the hefty $90 for this nongame, or do readers like you have an interest in the product as well?
While some core gamers might not have succumbed to the Wii Fit hype, we're sure quite a few of you are more than intrigued by Nintendo's latest innovation. If so, you might be interested to know that Walmart is offering a $10 gift card with Wii Fit preorders. Of course, since shipping and tax will amount to more than $10, you're not actually saving anything. Yet, should you want to avoid the angry mom rush in brick and mortar stores and get something in return for your troubles, it might not be too bad of an idea to take advantage of this offer.
If you're considering this deal, just keep in mind that it ends on May 11th (or possibly earlier if Walmart runs out of stock).

Today I rcvd an email from Buy.com that my wii fit has shipped when I tracked it they actually shipped it out yesterday so I will get it tomorrow at the latest, but it was already at my UPS sorting facility early this morning. Shipped from IL and I'm in OH. I pre-ordered my wii fit from them back in January so I was pretty sure I would get one, but you never know.

I preorded mine from amazon with next day shipping. I looked today and saw that they shipped it ups ground yesterday. Had to spend a few minutes on the phone arguing with them about the fact that even though I will get the package on the 22nd as promised, ground and next day shipping are not the same thing. Got the sipping refund. If anyone else ordered next day from amazon check your order.

What's even funnier is it looks like Nintendo used the very old, BMI scale to determine whether one is fit or not. :rofl2:
Horrible decision IMO.

What do you want Nintendo to use?
BMI is an objective statistic. I do not know what standard they are using (BMI is different for sex and age groups), but it is probably the best system they could have used. There are other options, but I do not think as much research is done using them (BMI is correlated to several conditions which makes it somewhat useful for a general population) and most other options rely on measures that cannot be done by the force plate.
Now Nintendo could have included DEXA or VO2max along with the Wii Fit to get better information regarding fitness levels, but I think that may have upped the cost a bit.
Wii Fit is not an exercise system. It is an activity system. It allows for somewhat accurate monitoring of changes of a single anthropometric measure. It is just a force plate. It cannot work magic. You want body typing, but that is impossible and relies on subjectivity. A lot of people with an average build would say that they are more muscular or athletic than they actually are. Muscular people will be considered more overweight than they actually are. But people who are athletic or muscular should not be using a childrens toy to determine fitness status.
By the bye, IGN has the same complaint that you do. I do not buy it (and yeah I actually do know about this stuff as I have studied exercise physiology and such.) Wii Fit is not an testing device. It is a game. A childrens toy. It might supplement a healthy lifestyle, but it is not the lifestyle changes needed to improve overall fitness.
I preordered mine on may 2nd from amazon, no note of shipment yet :( anyone that ordered one and it shipped already from amazon, when did you place your order? Thanks

Something more accurate than a system created in the mid 1800's perhaps.

A cheap, plastic, body fat caliper and some simple math is much more accurate determining fitness, as compared to the BMI.
Now Nintendo could have included DEXA or VO2max along with the Wii Fit to get better information regarding fitness levels, but I think that may have upped the cost a bit.
 Sure.

I wasn't making a complaint, just commenting the the fat little girl story.
The game is probably fun, but in the end, it's just a game.
The parents were probably correct in her case...she probably had a bit of extra muscle, which led to the incorrect assessment from the BMI scale.

Best Buy is right across the street from work. I went over at 9:55, there were about 20 people in line.
they were handing out tickets for the Wii Fit, i got one.
Inside there were about 30 or more Wii Fits, half of them were for pre-orders. They also had about 20 consoles. All were at Customer Service, so everyone had to wait in line inside.
They accepted the $10 off $75 Best Buy Rewardzone coupon.

Woke up at 7am when she got home from work (WalMart) and she did, I didn't expect her to. I just got my Wii on Thursday from Amazon, then my mom buys me Wii Fit, this is a great week! My brothers girlfriends mom wants to get a Wii and Wii Fit, I was going to let him take my Wii with him today before I got Wii Fit, but I'll be playing this for a while. My mom said this was the last one that they had so she bought it, she also got a discount because she works at Walmart.

Do you mean Wii or Wii Fit? Wii is more available now but Wii Fit is OOS in most stores.
Regarding the shipping weight, I just check the weight for an unopened box of WiiFit to be 10.1 pounds. So it makes sense for the one said 10-12 pounds depending on with packing or not. There are some non-US version being sold on the internet that has a different box design (a simple green Yoga person on it). That may have a lower weight. In addition, the non-US version may have a lower weight limit (like the Japanese one) and are less sturdy.
I have posted the difference in another thread. (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?p=11452117#post11452117)

Although it is OOS at most stores right now, it may not be very hot in reselling. People are bidding at ~$125 on eBay. Those who really wants it may have it pre-ordered or went to the store to get it in the morning of 5/21. It was widely available until around noon on 5/21 and some stores still have it in stock even yesterday. Those who are not as eager to get it may rather wait a few weeks than paying over $20 extra.
