i think instead of thumbing down a post just because it's a repost, we should be able to just click on repost icon. that way, it doesn't offend or put down the op and it also saves time. i know for me, i still click on the link even if it's thumbed down just to see why.

random.

No one should thumb down for a repost. The thumbs also get merged. Someone should mod alert it with the link to the original thread and be done with it.

Great suggestion...I definitely agree..sometimes when I'm looking I don't realize it is a repost and I may pass it by.

that's a great idea. so many people do thumbs down reposts and it's not a nice thing to do.

I think it's a great idea too. Seems like there could be a few different buttons for different things (wrong forum is another example). I think there's a huge thread here somewhere about voting "abuse", and I'm sure that's one of the ideas mentioned there.

I disagree.

If the OP is too dumb/lazy to search*, they deserve a thumbs down.

I'll mod alert reposts the first 2-3 times I see them (yes, some deals get reposted many more times than that). But after that, I usually just give it a thumbs down and wait for someone else to mod alert it. Instead of merging reposts over and over and over again, some of the threads should just be removed entirely.

It's a bug in the forum software to merge the thumb ratings from the two threads. I call it a bug instead of a feature because this allows me to vote twice on the same thread.

* - Quite often people say they have searched first. But I don't understand how the search result can appear for one person and not another. Perhaps there are search problems here that need to be looked at too?

Before judging with thumbs down, consider my post here (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=258077&t=701382)!!!

:iagree:

And the repost finder should get something like a rep (this way people don't just say repost and run away)

Why don't you think rep points for repost finders is a good idea?

Seems like there should small token of thanks for helping out.

The system only takes/counts one vote per user, even if you have voted for both threads and the threads were then merged.

Because people will then MA anything for a possible repost just to get the reps. It will take more time for us to figure out who MA'ed the correct posts. Not to mention, the number of MA's will greatly increase. Fights would break out over who MA'ed what first, and who deserves the reps more.

In reality, I doubt Mr. SD or Bryantq has time to write a program for it, and it will take up alot of our time.

So you guys depend on all of us good citizens to do this work, while someone else benefits from it?

 This sounds like something we beat in the 80's.

Edit: If you don't want to reward people for mod alerting, how about bigger "penalties" for people that repeatedly waste your time (with reposts, way off topic rants, etc)? You have a 10pt system for a temp ban. How about making second and third offenses for the same rule be double or triple the WP's?
