View Full Version : Folding to rep points, expanding the team and the cause.

Can we start having folders earning rep points? It will definitely help team expansion and increase community awareness. Right now, I'm estimating less than one percent of slickdeals members are actively folding and only a handful more have even heard of folding.

There shouldn't be any necessary user verification since rep points have no physical value anyway. And if someone feels the need the need to give someone else rep points, so be it.

The team goal should be TOP 100 LIST before the end of this year.

It is not spyware by any means. By running folding @ home, you are helping the science community in performing intense simulations of protein folding. You download an application, and you can set how much computer power it uses, and it just runs in the background. After it finishes a unit, it will send the data back to FAH, and download a new work unit, and so the process continues.

For those interested, see (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=362806) this thread for more details on how to setup folding for your computer.

I read the thread. I don't understand what any of it has to do with getting rep points? :dontknow:

Because we want people to join the cause. And since people always seem to want some kind of reward for doing something, REP points can be used as an incentive to get people to participate.

I support the idea of using some rewards system (including some rep scale) to encourage SD users to participate in the F@H program.

The Folding @ Home program is helping scientists better understand the root cause of many diseases. The "program" is installed on your computer and uses your computer's idle "brain power" to run protein simulations.

You can learn about the program at folding.stanford.edu (http://folding.stanford.edu)as well as the Folding FAQ in the tech support forum on slickdeals (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=362806).

From the Stanford Website:
"What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes. "

It absolutely, unequivocally, is not spyware.

I also think it would be a good idea to award REP points for folding points or something similar.

The folding prog. is absolutely NOT spyware (unless you count spying on how proteins fold :D )

Folding laundry takes time and effort. Folding@home takes none of the above (minus one time startup)

Well the argument for rep points is that you're helping the SD folding team and also helping disease research.

helping should equate to reputation

Helping at slickdeals should equate to reputation. Fark science!

I don't see the point of this. You're a better human being for doing this, but that doesn't make you a better member of SD.

You're helping the SD by helping their folding team, which even Mr. SD is a part of.

I don't think that offering rep points is going to get many more people to help out.

Now, if you start giving out starbuck giftcards, discounts at circuit city, or free pedometers, we will be all over it!

Well, maybe some of us Slick dealers with a box full of unwanted freebies could organize and take turns sending some free product coupons or funny little gifts to the new folders after they have been confirmed to have been folding for at least 1 month or 2 weeks?

I'd be willing to do that. Heck, I'd even turn my PMs back on for that!

Of course this might have to be administered as a contest by one person centrally. members of the folding team or sympathic slick dealers could send the central organizer donated free product coupons or giftcards to toss into the pot.

When my Free Febreze Noticeable coupon gets here, I'll happily donate that plus I have a bunch others I'd be happy to give to the cause

Yeah, we gotta do something. Maybe find a way to post in the Hot Deals forum without everyone thumbing down and TC's all over it. I know there are a bunch of people herw ith a TON of the Staples coupons that they can give away. Maybe offer 5 Rep points for joining, then another 5 reps per week or something, that way it's still a Slick Deal of sorts. I know I'd love it if I earned reps for folding, even though I do it anyways.

I don't think that's necessary considering I founded the team. :P

At the very least the site should enable folding signatures by default in the Hot Deals section (for both users and guests). That wouldn't be difficult at all to implement.

Maybe mention 5 rep points when you start folding as a one time bonus. Then we can figure out anything additional when the time comes.

Why? What does this have to do with your reputation at SD? How does this make SD a better place?

Because it gives people an incentive to fold for the common good. There are hundreds of thousands of members on SD, but only under 100 of them are actually active. We can do better than that.

Rep points would be an incentive for people to start folding for the team. Us folding is a slick deal for the folks at Stanford University b/c we're processing info for them which they use to try and cure diseases. Does that help?

Folding@home begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug. It launches its missiles against the targets in Russia. Because Folding@home knows the Russian counter-attack will eliminate its enemies over here.

Not really. We are letting the cause essentially use our computers when we aren't. Its not just click and go.
