Not a lot of talk about this game around here, but maybe that's because there hasn't been a lot of news lately. Somebody posted another thread about what games have the best replay value, and it got me thinking about my favorite online game from the PS2, which was Socom 2.

Socom: Confrontation looks to be exactly what Socom 1/2 fans were hoping for, who were a little disappointed with Socom 3 and want to get back to what made the first two (especially 2) so great. The giant maps and vehicles in 3 were a nice technical achievement, but also resulted in battles that were far too spread out and less up-close and personal. But some of the good things about Socom 3 will be retained, including the more flexible weapon system that allowed you to create different combinations of guns, scopes, and other accessories.

As a special bonus, Socom: Confrontation will also feature my favorite map of all time, Crossroads. They are also promising more destructible environments.

I think this is going to be the game that finally gets my wife complaining once again that I'm spending too much time gaming.

The game was initially pushed back from last year. Then we saw a release date of June 2008. Now, it's TBA 2008. Disappointing... but as they say, getting it done right is the most important thing. Since this will be an online only game like Warhawk, I expect nothing less. Hopefully the new team Slant Six knows what they're doing. From the sound of it, they were mostly Socom 2 fans like me, so I have great hope.

Calling all Socom freaks... post here. When the game comes, I'd like to put together a clan. Especially all you Crossroads fans.

Huge socom fan since numero uno. I actually just picked up a ps3 yesterday after playing the 360 for the past year or two.

Every now and then I check out the playstation boards because they have a developer on there that will give some news every once in a great while.

ps3 name is "smeace" feel free to add me as i have no friends:rolleyes:

Socom was my best online experience. Me, my brother, and my 2 cousins all had our own ps2s. We each owned, Socom I, II, III, and combined assault. I remember 12 hour sessions of Socom on the weekend, we would all take a food break at a certain time, and jump right back on to play. It was so addicting.

And I agree, once they hit III, it went downhill. I'm hoping Confrontation gets a Fall release of 08. If I remember correctly, didn't every other Socom hit stores during the same months every year? This is going to be one of my top reasons for getting a PS3.

So in speaking of Confrontation, what are you looking forward to or what do you want to see implemented?

Me personally, they need to take out the ability to hit select, and see who's dead on each team. I loved it so much better in Socom I where the lady would simply say "Seals are winning." So when you are trying to demo a facility, you have no idea if you're outnumber by 1 guy, or by 5. I also loved when you would kill an enemy you would hear "Tango down." Because when I am playing in a random room, looking at the top to see who killed who doesn't help me much when I don't even know the people on my team.

Maps were way to big in the recent Socoms. To me, Foxhunt, was my favorite level, and the perfect sized map. Any bigger than that, and almost every round will end and the team will win based on who has more alive players. 32 Players is way to much in my opinion, and I hardly ever found myself looking to join those games when I played combined assault.

For the love of god, take out the vehicles! Doesn't make much sense when it takes 6 rpgs to take out a tank when typically maybe one person would have a single rpg on a team. Not really much use there...

Something about the mic system I loved, where you had to push and hold O to talk, seemed to make things much more organized then the open mic systems used now. I don't even hear strategy getting talked about when playing CoD4. I guess I'd prefer a non-open mic system.

Simply, I am hoping Confrontation is just Socom I/II. If all Confrontation was, was Socom I/II, all the same maps, but just a graphics update, and the weapon customization, I would be happy.

Not to say the the recent Socoms were "horrible." I know people still play it, heck even I still play it every once in a while. But it got to a point to where the developers just kept on adding more stuff (bigger maps, vehicles, 32 players) just because they can, and they never stopped to ask if they should.

While different isn't always a bad thing, in Socom's case, it made it a little less enjoyable in my opinion.

Yes, they did. It's just a matter of the reasoning behind changing from June 2008 to TBA 2008, and how much more time they think they need.

So in speaking of Confrontation, what are you looking forward to or what do you want to see implemented?

Personally I'd rather still know who remains on the other team. I guess that's just something I was used to because I didn't play the first game very much. The "tango down" thing I can take or leave as well. Again, I was comfortable with the way Socom 2 played.

Agreed. Like I said, giant maps aren't always better. With Socom 3, I was always looking for the 16 player games that had more restricted parts of those larger maps.

For the love of god, take out the vehicles! Doesn't make much sense when it takes 6 rpgs to take out a tank when typically maybe one person would have a single rpg on a team. Not really much use there...

Done! No vehicles in S:C. I'm glad too.

I see your point, but I always thought the "key-up" thing was due to limitations of the hardware, although I could be wrong. I think an "always on" mic could have its benefits, but you definitely need an organized team. Edit: how about a hybrid of the two... you still have to key up, but maybe 3 or 4 people at a time could still talk. The more I think about that idea the more I like it. It could serve to help eliminate the problems that both methods end up having.

Simply, I am hoping Confrontation is just Socom I/II. If all Confrontation was, was Socom I/II, all the same maps, but just a graphics update, and the weapon customization, I would be happy.

Yes, and destructible environments and the ability to work that into the strategy... that too!

I like third person too. Although it can easily be called "cheap" to be able to peek around corners without being seen from the opposite side, I gotta admit I loved those "pop 'n' drops". Plus, the drawn back camera gave you an overall better view of your surroundings.

What I can't stand 3rd person view on is driving games. For me, It has to be driver's view or nose-cam. I feel so disconnected from the experience trying to control a car while feeling like I'm floating in space behind it. I'm very much looking forward to GT5's driver view. This kind of view was often too inhibiting in the past, but in 16:9 aspect is works very well... got a taste of it with the JPN prologue demo. It also gives you the chance to experience the european driving position (right side), which is refreshing.

I'm a big fan of Socom and I'm very disappointed that it hasn't come out for PS3 yet. I got over it with COD4 so now I think I could care less when the next socom comes out. I also browse the playstation forum for the updates but since they have become few and far between.......well, I lost interest.
I'm sure I'll still get it if and when it finally comes out if it looks good.

For some reason, the auto-matchmaking feature in COD4 turns me off. I like finding my favorite map(s) from a server list and then being able to choose them.

Socom 2 had that OneMoreRound-itis effect.

"One more round..."

Three hours later...

OK, ONE more round...

I used to love Socom... I for one loved the original far more than the sequels. Something about the hit detection and the little changes in 2 and 3 just didnt do it for me. I remember logging some serious hours on Socom.

I also liked the briefing rooms and different servers it made things more organized. I know it is easy to find your buddies when their is some sort of friend list like xbox or ps3 but If your just looking to play with repetitive people the server setup was great. I too liked the pressing of O to talk rather than open mic, the games become so much more fun when you play as a team.

My best memory from socom was during my clans first clan war. We were playing abandoned I believe... my 7 teamates die and in spectacular fashion I completed the biggest upset ever and killed all of the opposing 8. I just remember the pressure building after every kill especially knowing my team was ghosting me too. Awesome match, awesome game... I need some socom in my life.

Similar thing happened with me on Socom II. Playing Foxhunt as Seals, had to escort the VIPs. And for those of you that aren't familiar with playing escort, you either have to escort 2 of the 3 VIPs to an extraction point, or they must survive until the round time is up.

All my teammates died, it was now 1 on 8, with the job of keeping the VIPs alive. Luckily, I was a pretty good sniper in that game. Their mistake, they kept coming one at a time, so I would pick one off, regroup, get another and so forth. They never came in as a group. Took them all down in the end. So satisfying, yet nearly gave me a heart attack.

The funniest moment. Playing a 3 vs 3 clan battle. A little trick everyone used was voting the people that were alive on your time. When you received a vote, on the top, the screen would say "You have 1 vote against you." This would be a form of letting you know that there was someone behind you, since the dead can't talk to the living. To bad both my clan mates decided to vote me and kicked me out the room.

I consistently stayed inside the top 7000 or so in Socom 2, even when there were rampant rankup glitches going on. I never used any.

I had a few comebacks. I won a 1 on 6 on Crossroads once I remember. And the last two were together near the Seal spawn. I came over the half-wall and down the stairs, not knowing they were there... but one of them had *just* left his watch on the stairs I just got to. Caught them both offguard and got instant double headshots.

Had another good one that including killing the last, four I think, guys... after they planted the bomb. And running to the bomb I knew that my only chance was to dive on it perfectly, and hit the button right when I hit the ground because I had no time to adjust. I nailed the dive/button combo, right when the clock changed from 5 to 4 seconds. That was awesome because everyone who played demolition knew that you needed exactly four full seconds to defuse. I swear it must have been at like 0.01 seconds and I got it. Then of course all the teammate mics turned on and instantly there was all kinds of hooting and hollering.

Just a next-gen tuned version of this exact same damn game and map would sell it for me.

I love Socom haha. Some of you might hate me for this but I loved Quick Sniping haha. That's what I loved most about Socom 3 and Socom CA. I quit playin after the patch that stopped us from scoping in the air. I haven't really played much since then. I used to play a LOT though. I sold my PS2, my games, and my mic. I'm saving for a PS3 and Confrontation. Hopefully we'll be able to QS lol. If not, I'll still run around shootin my sniper with a high scope haha. I miss that game. .. if you can't tell..

1up reports that the next EGM issue will have a huge blowout on Confrontation.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3166758

With the popular SOCOM franchise set to make its debut on the PlayStation 3 this year via SOCOM Confrontation, fans are psyched, and we are too. The latest issue of EGM -- the one with GTA IV on the cover -- has just arrived in mailboxes across the nation, but we're already looking ahead to our next ish, which will feature an exclusive hands-on look at Confrontation's full 32-player online battles. Hopefully that's enough to get you hungry, but in the mean time we've rounded up a couple brand new screenshots to really whet your appetite.

For another image and bigger sizes, take a look at 1UP's media page for SOCOM Confrontation. Check out the upcoming May issue of EGM for all the info on the game and many more pics.

What's funny is looking at the top 10 anticipated 2008 games on 1up, this game isn't even on the radar yet. I have a feeling it's going to shoot up those charts real soon.

Attached are the two new images.

A supposedly leaked PowerPoint presentation revealed a new official Bluetooth headset for PS3. Set to launch in July/August, the headset would retail for $50 individually. More exciting, however, is SOCOM Confrontation bundle that's mentioned: both the game and headset would hit retail for $60.

The design of this rumored headset is an improvement over the one offered with Warhawk. However, don't get your hopes up quite yet. When asked for comment, a SCEA representative told us that "we have currently made no announcements for a new PS3 headset so any information is speculation and rumor."

Sweeeeet! Lets hope it comes with a headset, but more importantly I hope they keep the "push to talk" feature. It seems so much more organized that way when playing. Maybe the most annoying part of CoD4 is when some idiot has music playing in the background and its all you can hear.

PTT would be wonderful for COD - it would force a lot of the whiners, singers and slur slingers to choose either talking or shooting.

The May issue of EGM will have a cover story, likely going into great depth about the upcoming PSN title, SOCOM Confrontation. However, 1UP has a small sneak peek: it's given readers a list of all the special forces squads that players can join. 1UP explains: "Joining a special force is now a perk associated with joining a clan ... special forces (and their associated uniforms, gear, and weapons) will only be available to clan members." As expected, the SEALs and SAS are available in the game. But what else can players find?

* Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEALs, United States)
* Special Air Service (SAS, United Kingdom)
* Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK, Germany)
* Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (UOE, Spain)
* 1er Régiment de Parachutistes d'Infanterie de Marine (1er RPIMa, France)

Sony's SOCOM Confrontation plans to tactfully invade stores on September 16, but operations for the game actually begin today with a new community site. 1Up reports SOCOM.com will provide news updates and a forum leading up to the game's arrival. After the title launches, the site will provide "real-time stat tracking, clan management tools, and more."

EGM's May issue looks to provide a plethora of information on the upcoming PS3 title. With SOCOM's Sept. date, it appears Sony is really stacking its big announced titles for the last few months of the year. Start dropping change in the coin jar now because holiday '08 is already looking just as brutal on the wallet as '07.

Heck, I already expect solid gameplay, but the online menu for finding friends/clan members alike was always the best. Thats the one thing about CoD4 that I really dislike.

First or second week of May: My new Logitech Driving Force GT wheel arrives
Rest of May: Bouncing between those two games

By August: ???.... whatever holds my interest.
September 16th: SOCOM FREAKIN CONFRONTATION

i've said this in other socom threads. but i never really got into the game. Maybe it was cause I didn't have a mic, and therefor couldn't really contribute to the strategy. (thus getting "pwned" playing a good ol 3 vs. 1) here's hoping i like this game as much as I do COD4

No doubt. Quite a few of my coworkers and I would get on and play until the wee hours of the night (or morning) and then show up the next day all tired but talking about the crazy things that went on. Frostfire, FTW!

I don't have a PS3 yet. I was waiting to see if the new SOCOM was going to be 2ish or 3ish.

I didn't like 3 as much as 2.

Then you should be psyched for Confrontation, because they are ditching the vehicles and making it more like Socom 2 for next gen. They'll be keeping some of the good aspects of 3 though like the more customizable weapon loadouts. More destructible environments are also promised. And they're putting in a new version of Crossroads. YAYAYAYAYA

I might actually buy next month's EGM just for the Socom feature. That would be like the first time in years I bought a gaming mag.

Here's the big question: What will the number of players/game be online? When they went to 32, in my opinion, on bigger maps.... it went downhill.

Supporting up to 32, but you can have 16 player games that use more confined versions of the maps to balance it out.

Also there's this quote from one of the Slant Six guys:

Initial recon indicates subject is returning to previous areas of operation. "Crossroads is by far the fan favorite," Luisi says, "so we definitely wanted to show what this level would look like in the next generation. We're trying to maintain a smaller size; the largest level in this game is going to be smaller than anything we had in SOCOM 3. And so while we are going to expand Crossroads out a bit, it's not going to be this huge, expansive area. All the other maps we're going to ship initially with the game are all going to be new."

Well, I tried to get online with Socom 3 and it just kept prompting me to download something new. Then it said there was an error and to download this thing, then an error, then... you get the idea. So still no Socom online for me.

I decided to try another game though Call of Duty: Finest Hour. Let me tell you, that was some funny crap!!! If anyone has that game, seriously go online and tell me what you think of it. Just watching my team walk around was hilarious.

Ok well I just received the May 2008 issue of EGM.

For those of you that don't receive it, I will try and highlight some of the article's main points.

- 32 player maps as well as scaled down 16 player maps.

- "Grenades are now all physics-based...You'll be able to decide whether you want to roll a grenade or throw it overhand. It all uses real physics, so it'll bounce off curbs and things like that."

- The use of cover and leaning/peaking around the corner is now done by tilting the controller. You can choose to peek out with complete precision based on how much you tilt the controller.

- Because vehicles have been removed from this installation of Socom (Thank god), players now have the ability to run. Running, much like in COD4, disables your ability to fire your weapon. When you come out of a run, your accuracy is poor initially. So it is advisable not to run around the entire map as an enemy coming around the corner can easily take you down. However, seems useful if say you have to cross a empty road and avoid sniper fire.

- View distance is greatly improved. For example, in Crossroads, you could you look from one end of the street to the other, but enemies running away would fade away and not be visible. Now you get a crystal-clear view all the way to the other end.

- With greater view distance, a sniper now gets an advantage. Therefore, in the newer version of Crossroads, additional objects have been added to provide extra cover.

- Some objects are destructable. "We have exploding barrels, back by popular demand, and propane tanks you can blow up and garbage bags that can get destroyed" Abandoned cars also talk realistic bullet damage before eventually blowing up.

- Every player begins the game with two characters: a commando and a mercenary. Both customizable (weapons, gear, outfits)

- You will receive full customization abilities playing as a special forces character once you join a clan.

- Special forces allow your clan to have different camo patterns, helmets, and weapons that are unique to each different special force.
- Special forces include (with more to come):
-Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEALs, United States)
-Special Air Service (SAS, United Kingdom)
-Kommando Spezialkrafte (KSK, Germany)
-Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (UOE, Spain)
-Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale (GIGN, France)
-Commando Raggruppamento Subacquei ed Incursori Teseo Tesei (COMSUBIN, Italy)

- The clan leader decides the special force the clan uses.

- Clan management is now accessible online through SOCOM.com. You can make changes to your clans schedule and roster, exchange info with clan members, and scout new recruits thanks to an exhaustive stat-tracking system. (Such as a "heat map" for each player that shows how frequently the player lands shots on different parts of enemies' bodies.)

- Ranked matches are now automatched. "You can now no longer set up a match exactly defined to your team's exact strengths and create a honeypot to raise your clan ranking."

- You can still create clan tryout rooms and training rooms, but these generate different stats that doesn't directly affect the global clan ladder.

- As with other games, there is a party system to keep you group together when switching games/lobbies.

- Your group has open-mic chat in game. The push-to-talk feature comes into play when you wish to talk to the rest of the team not in your party. Also you can talk to anyone within earshot with proximity chat (including enemies).

- Socom will be available both as a download and as a retail product which will include a "high-quality Bluetooth headset."

- Player health is now closer to Socom I and II in regards to how many hits a player can take.

- Bullet-pentration system has a more lifelike simulation and different types of cover protect you against incoming fire more than others.

- Suppression, demolition, extraction, breach, and escort are all returning as game modes.

- A new game mode, Elimination, is being added. Much like suppression, the object is to eliminate the other team, but victory is only achieved once all enemies have been killed. No more rounds being decided by which team has the most members alive at the end of the time limit.

- Respawn matches are still available with the ability to change options such as restricting explosives.

- "Downloadable content is something that is very important to this project. We're trying to look at different things we can offer for downloadable content, and we want to have it on a fairly frequent basis: every month or every two months, and then larger amount of content about every three months. We're looking at characters, weapons, maps--we're looking at a lot of different things."

Hope I didn't miss anything. All I got to say is, thank god GTA: IV is coming out to keep me occupied till this comes out.

Awesome, thanks for all that.

This part is a little confusing though:

- Your group has open-mic chat in game. The push-to-talk feature comes into play when you wish to talk to the rest of the team not in your party. Also you can talk to anyone within earshot with proximity chat (including enemies).

I'm not sure what "the rest of the team not in your party" is referring to when it comes to requiring "push to talk" (for those that don't remember, push-to-talk was previously the only voice chat mode available, and only one teammate could talk at a time). And also, I'm wondering if the ability to hear enemies (and their ability to hear you) will be a constant worry, or if that's something that can be avoided or toggled on or off in some way. It would be kind of a cool bit of realism though... that you'll actually have to think twice about opening your mouth in a given situation.

Oh and also, more control over how you throw your grenades is something I always wished for. That's good.

For the communication...If you played any game with a party system such as COD4. You may have a 4 person party, but join a game where its 8 vs 8. So 4 people on your team are in your party, the other 4 are not in your party. The 4 in your party all have open mic chat with one another. If you wish to talk to your other teammates not in your party, you can go the push-to-talk route.

Shoot, I am going to take it up a notch and say it is THE BEST GAME EVER.

I miss it so much. Zipper phailed so badly, that I went ahead and bought a xbox 360. I was so fed up with what resulted after that game.

I am just sad that this game is still very questionable. I really don't see myself getting the full socom experience...hopefully it will be close enough.

Like always, I can't make a decision until updated gameplay footage comes out.

luckily from what i read in this month's EGM, the 32 player maps can be scaled down to a 16 player map, to add to the intensity. So hopefully that helps

I remember zipper's attempt at their scaled down versions. They were really half-assed. They simply blocked off certain parts and hoped it would work.

Some maps like fault did, but even at that the gameplay was so bad...I couldn't enjoy it.

I guess the way I would put it is: If you were into the game before, then you understand. A good example would be Counterstrike. People who didn't play it would say, "that game is old and looks outdated. I don't get it." to which you'd reply, "if you play it, you'd know."

COD4 comes close, but I still don't think it matches the overall experience of Socom 1 and 2.

At about 5:00 the guy is just standing there and picks off like 4 players in a row without apparently getting shot at? and they don't take any cover? lol. One thing that looks nice is the ability to roll when you lay down. In COD4 you can barely move when you lay down. I'm like even I could crawl faster than these soldiers.

Will Socom have a killcam or not?

Yeah, it did seem that guy was owning a bit too easy, I noticed that too.

I mentioned the prone rolling because the game never had that before.

I doubt there will be a killcam. There never has been in previous games and I hope they don't copy it. To be honest, I don't really like it in COD4 anyway. To me, one of the many enjoyable things in Socom was the feeling of being on a roll and the other guys thinking "damn, where IS he?" And I don't mean just totally being a camper, but moving place to place and managing to get the drop on people.

Well that's kind of like CoD4's hardcore mode I think. I haven't played it much but I think there are no killcams and the only time you see the map (unless you press start) is when UAV is on.

The game looks a lot like the original but with a 3d aspect. I think they did a great job, but the game play just looked too easy for that one sniper or shooter. I feel that the controls look awesome, and having the 3rd person view is always good.

It reminds me of SoCom 2, but thats a given. It's still amazes me that 2,000-5,000 people play it everyday still.

One note, in Socom, you could see the guy who shot you. For example, on Frost Fire as a Terrorist if you spawned up top and got fragged 2 seconds in, it would follow the SEAL that killed you basically until they died. But it would only follow them relative to where you died, so it wouldn't be like you were watching them completely.

The camera stayed stationary at your body, from your own perspective though... it wouldn't let you see through somebody else's eyes or give away their position from medium and longer ranges if they were hiding. Nothing at all like the COD kill cam. In fact it's so minor, I had to think for a second just to realize what you were saying is true.

Yup, when you got sniped, you would see the general area the shooter was at when he got you and your screen would follow them.

Not that impressed with the video, but I do like the roll and incorporating the sixaxis motion for player movements.

As for analyzing the game footage, I'm not so concerned with the graphic fidelity as I am looking at gameplay nuances, HUD, the reticle, etc. It looks like they have properly recreated the reticle... from the way it expands when you're running (since you should have a harder time being accurate on the run), then closes in when you stop, and also lights up red when focused on an enemy. I want to see proper hit detection, although we really need to see a lot more footage and most likely play ourselves before we know if that's good.

Graphics, really, are far down the list for me. I don't think this is going to be a problem, because gameplay is the star of the show here. But it does look promising in this department. They just need to prioritize everything else first, especially framerate.. then see how good they can make it look without compromising any of it.

SOCOM.com has been updating non-stop about the upcoming PSN title, SOCOM: Confrontation. With each update, they've included a screen or two, all of which we've compiled here. The title is being handled by Slant Six, which made the excellent (and underappreciated) SOCOM Tactical Strike on PSP. While Confrontation brings the series back to its roots, we have to echo the sentiment of many of our readers: this title doesn't look like it's pushing the PS3 very far, from a visual perspective. Hopefully, the gameplay will stay true to the SOCOM heritage.

SOCOM Confrontation artwork & screens update

Over at ThreeSpeech, there's a nice gallery of SOCOM Confrontation concept art and screenshots. The concept art are quite beautiful, so check that out. As suggested by the artwork above, the game incorporates day/night environments, very cool. The screenshots on the other hand are not as exciting as previous ones you may have seen before. This time around, you get to see mostly images of grunts posing for the camera. That's not revealing much, but SOCOM fans would probably still get a kick out of it. The game is coming on September 16, so mark it on your calendar.

SOCOM Confrontation interview details SIXAXIS controls, maps

Another recent interview with David Seymour, design director for SOCOM Confrontation, sheds more light on the game and, in particular, on the game's SIXAXIS controls. The tilt capabilities will be used in "the old SOCOM lean," said Seymour. "[It] lets the player use cover in the environment in a very open way."

For those new to SOCOM, the lean ability allows characters to stretch out behind their cover position and get a better shot at their target without exposing themselves to the enemy. Seymour explains, "By tilting the controller, you stretch your character up to full extension or lean him out or any combination of the two. So you can lean up and out just enough to clear the tip of your barrel, over the roof of a car, or to fire through a gap in a broken wall. Lastly, there is a "bailout" position that you access by tilting the controller down, causing your character to pull his head down for cover behind low objects." The SIXAXIS has a second function other than for leaning; it will be used to "roll, lob, or throw" grenades. To see the lean in action, check out the last minute of this video here.

Also, some further details on the game's seven maps were also discussed. Five of these maps will be scalable with support for 8, 16, and 32 players while the other two only support 8 and 16 players. Four of the maps are all new, while three are classic remakes.

If you're interested to read more about the interview, you can do so at IGN (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/874/874021p1.html).

The SixAxis also enabled us to bring on an extension of the old SOCOM "lean". This feature is a really open-ended and skill-driven feature that lets the player use cover in the environment in a very open way.

can't wait to see it in action!

You get to see some of the new, expanded areas of Crossroads. At first you don't realize that's what you are looking at until the guy reaches the all-too-familiar center square.

SOCOM Confrontation to include Bluetooth headset

A few months ago, we reported that SOCOM Confrontation will release in retail stores with a brand new Bluetooth headset for $60 -- it's a similar package to the one crafted for Warhawk, but this new headset will be officially PlayStation-branded. An e-mail about an upcoming SOCOM media event made quick mention of the device, confirming its existence, but offered no new details. We hope to get some pictures and some ears-on time with the new headset later this month.

Heard that a while back too. I don't really need another headset right now, but it will be interesting to see how the pricing works out... I'm assuming the downloadable edition may cost a bit less.

New announcements regarding public beta:

Public Beta Announcement
Posted by David “Point Man” Brothers

Listen up folks, 'cause I've got some dirt on the Public Beta for SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation! We're not quite ready to say when it will come out, but let's just say that it's gonna be a hot summer... better to spend it inside, just in case.

There'll be a couple of ways to get in. One will be through a radically different pre-order program (think ‘team’) the team is working on with one of our retailer friends. It’s currently in planning mode, but I should have some more info soon. Trust me-- all you clan guys are going to love it. Stay tuned.

The second option will be to go through Qore™: Presented by PLAYSTATION®Network, SCEA’s new interactive monthly program. It goes up for purchase and download on the PLAYSTATION®Store on June 5th. Subscribers to Qore will get the opportunity to participate in the Public Beta when it’s available, but you can occupy your time watching some of the cool SOCOM behind-the-scenes videos that will come exclusively with Qore.

I see a lot of talk on the forums and comments about how this person or that person is the biggest and baddest SEAL around. Soon, you're going to get a chance to put your money where your mouth is!

The "radically different" pre-order program appears to involve clans... perhaps, a way to encourage people to form clans before even getting their hands on the game? We'll see. But this is one beta I absolutely must be a part of, whichever way. I guess that will mean they're going to sucker me into this "Qore" thing, at least for a little while.

Release date is set at 9/16/08, firmly they say. They were previously shooting for June. Probably better not to release it same month as MGS4 though. Let them refine it even more while we play MGS4.

I like that they will include a party system. That's a big feature that was previously missing.

I hope so.... I just want the software released when they say they are going to release it but your right it definetly would not be good to release it same month as MGS4.... IGN's Pre-E3 Hands On:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/884/884823p1.html

Noteworthy new news:

- Spawn camping will be "taken care of"
- Current build running in 720p, but will end up supporting 1080p (didn't specify if this would be upscaled 720p but it probably is)
- Fully positional 7.1 audio (hells yeah)
- The new BT headset, when on its stand, will support open mic functionality for other possible uses in other games
- Besides Crossroads, Frostfire and Desert Glory maps return

Now that I'm almost done with MGS4, I'll probably finally mess with GT5P a bunch while we wait the 80 more days until this monster hits.

Last we heard in March, SOCOM: Confrontation was coming September 16 to PS3. If Gamestop is to be believed, that release date has been pushed back a month to October 14. We wouldn't be surprised if it was true, as our hands-on time with the game recently showed there was still a lot of work to be done. We've put in a call to developer Slant Six for an official response.

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Release Date
Posted by Seth Luisi
Hello again.

It's been a very busy time for SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. We recently achieved Alpha, we held the big SOCOM: Confrontation Media Day outside of Vegas and now we are preparing for E3 and crunching hard to get the game to Beta and beyond.

Unfortunately, even working late into the nights and every weekend, we've had to re-evaluate our schedule. Our top priority is delivering the best SOCOM online experience possible. Tough decisions had to be made and we've decided to push back the release date to October 14th, 2008. We just had to face the facts and do what is best for the title. Rather than sacrifice features, quality and stability, we had to do the right thing and re-adjust our schedule.

This was a very tough decision for us to make as it means that the team will be working more late nights and weekends ahead before the game is released, not fewer. However, we absolutely feel that we need to deliver the best SOCOM online experience possible; you deserve no less.

Coffee and pizza donations are welcome :).

Development takes a lot longer and is a heck of a lot more expensive now than it used to. Some developers don't have the time or the money to make both aspects perfect. It's better for them (and for their review score) to focus on one aspect of the game rather than half ass something.

Sometimes... but if a game was laggy it would make it worse because the hit detection would be off a bit. There were definitely those moments, but pretty much all games you invest that many hours in end up having those moments.

i'm sorry but for innovation and features in the story mode Halo 3 was the best so far.. its probably the most balanced between MP and SP of all the current gen games so far.. but cod4 wasnt bad but they could have done way more with it.. i dont like the GTA series in general so i i'll just say that from what i saw it seemed like it had a really good story and the mp had alot of cool features.. but thats not the norm with most of the games recently.. like like Army of Two or Kane and Lynch.. AoT had pretty good single player but the MP seemed like they started and then planned on finishing it with downlodable content after the game released.. I like Bad companie's MP but if they had added some features and changed a few it would be better than COD4 easily.. i havent finished the single player campaign but it seems good so far.. still not sure why more games havent added online coop..

:iagree: COD:4 has one of the best single player campaigns (for FPS). The only games I would put above it are Half-life 1 & 2. I don't know what you're :smoke:

*edit* Army of Two was garbage. Single player was crap, multiplayer was crap. Co-op was the only good part about that game. It sucks too because I was really looking forward to AoT since it was announced.

Having sold multiple millions of copies, the SOCOMfranchise was the number-one online series on the PlayStation 2 console. With 2005's SOCOM 3 a distant memory and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault serving as little more than a demo of PSP connectivity, Sony faithful have been waiting patiently by their shiny new PS3s for some shooting action. They only have a few more months to wait for SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, which will focus solely on online play and building a community around it. We recently attended a preview event to try out the multiplayer mayhem that awaits us this October, and here are our impressions.

Given all of the processing power beneath the PS3's "hood," the fantastic new graphics shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, but veteran SOCOM players, who have been toughing it out on PS2s all this time, will appreciate the upgrade. There will be a lot less squinting to see if that black smudge on the screen is an enemy. The pumped-up graphics and 7.1 audio support will leave you shellshocked the first time you go through an intense firefight. We've all heard exploding cars and C4 blasts in other games before, but they've have never sounded this good before.

Graphics aren't the only thing that has been bumped up for the PS3. Confrontation will feature ballistics and penetration modeling, which means that if you're hiding behind a wooden box, you'd better find some better cover because the bullets will hit you. This also means that if you're in a corner, the bullets have a chance of penetrating the edges of the wall, depending on the thickness of the wall at the bullet's point of impact. You also won't be able to hug the wall and shoot, which was a standard move in prior SOCOM offerings. The developers have modeled the distance necessary to bring up your gun and shoot, so you'll have put some distance between you and the wall in order to pull the trigger; if that distance hasn't been reached, then you'll only be able to look. This will take some getting used to, but good players will be able to pick up the skill by automatically judging the necessary distance to pull the gun into a firing stance.

The controls are similar to previous SOCOM games, but Confrontation marks the first time in the series' history that you'll be able to customize your controls if the default button configuration doesn't suit you. You'll have the standard quick-switch button, which lets you revert to the last weapon you had, and all of the usual controls —crouch, jump and fire — are present and accounted for. You'll also be able to take advantage of the SixAxis controller to look around corners. You aim with the analog stick and strafe while looking around corners. It might taking some getting used to because you'll be tilting the controller to one side or the other, depending on which side you want to lean toward, and you'll still have the ability to aim your gun and strafe, so you have three separate controls for movement. One SixAxis feature that I'm sure will be invaluable to snipers is the ability to quickly jolt your controller down, which forces your character to duck and hide. This will be very useful when you're behind a wall and notice that your position has been compromised.

Confrontation will feature Crossroads, the most popular SOCOM map of all time (hell yeah!). There will be seven maps, with five that will scale for eight-, 16-, and 32-player games. Each map will also have a night and day version, which will let you squeeze the most out of every map.

After the game launches, a thriving online fan community can help it achieve longevity. Unsurprisingly, clans will be one of the most important assets to Confrontation, so the title features built-in clan support. Advanced clan features, such as assigning other members of your clan as officers who will have the power to schedule clan events, will ensure that your clan will not remain idle when you're on vacation. You will be able to match up with other clans based on your group's skill level rather than individual skill level. On a calendar view, there will be tournaments that clans can sign up for on a calendar view. The calendar will also display challenges from other clans that you can accept or reject. There will be stat tracking on the individual level and clan level. There are also plans to have all of this information and clan management available from the Web so you can check out your calendar and schedule matches without having to turn on your PS3.

The special forces included in the game are the United States Navy SEALs, Special Air Service (SAS, United Kingdom), Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK, Germany), Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (UOE, Spain), and 1er Régiment de Parachutistes d’Infanterie de Marine (1er RPIMa, France). Your clan will be associated with one of them, and you'll be able to unlock a special weapon that's unique to the special forces unit that you selected.

Those who have played Warhawk and other PS3 games online with the Jabra Bluetooth headset know how it's less than ideal for gaming (to put it mildly). It looks like Sony has been listening, and they have designed a Bluetooth headset specifically for the PS3 and SOCOM. A distinguishing feature that it has compared to any other Bluetooth headset is a mute button, which is really important for those of you who want to keep private conversations from being broadcast all over the game. It will also come with a charging dock and have an overall look that better matches the PS3's styling. The headset will be included in select SOCOM bundles.

Overall, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation for the PS3 is shaping up to be a fun game. With a graphics boost and 7.1 audio support to usher the franchise into the next generation of consoles, dedicated multiplayer gameplay, and the intention of building a strong online community, Confrontation is ready to dominate the Sony shooter scene this autumn and beyond. There was mention of a possible public beta, similar to Warhawk, but you'll have to keep an eye out for more news as the release date approaches.

They say you can still pick up that June issue of Qore and get in. I might do that.

Then I'll preorder the $40 version (my moto H700 headsets are just fine) most likely, since I have some stuff to trade in.

So who is playing the Beta? Some ppl are already in.

Some interessting infos from a beta player:

I noticed in some of the pics that the games ended in a tie...., so what do we do now?

Q & A

I have a few questions taken from the socom community...if you dont mind.

Q - Hows the game overall? What Socom of the series can it best be compaired to?
A - It's a good mix of Socom 1 and Socom 2.

Q - Are there any new surprises that many of us might not know yet about?
A - Perhaps, if there are I can't think of any right now.

Q - How is the stafeing?
A - It's not over the top speedy as Socom 2 was, thats for sure. It's not turtle slow either, it can be worth doing in certain situations.

Q - How does the clan system work?
A - Not included in beta.

Q - How does the rank system work?

A - Not included in beta.

Q - How does the friend system work?
A- Not included in beta.

Q - Hows the knife?
A- I think most of you will like the knife. I haven't seen or killed anyone from the front, and if you're sneaking up behind them you're taking a risk of them turning around and blowing your head off, trust me haha first hand experience.

Q - Six-axis Leaning - First impressions? How practical? Good or bad?
A - It's alright, I use it more to duck, or to stand rather than leaning. Chances of me using it a lot for leaning purposes are slim.

Q - How many types of camo are there, and if possible what kinds?
A - In the beta theres a good amount, solid colors, patterns, etc.

Q - Any guns we dont know about? SR-25 SD?
A - The beta didn't include every single gun in the game, so your guess is as good as mine.

Q - How many people were online the last time you were on?
A - It's usually around 20 or so people on at the same time. I heard a very small number of invites went out (50?). Don't know about more invites.

Q - Can you get som pics of the lobby system, loading screens, loadouts, attachments, face paint etc PLEASE!?

A - Yeah I included some.

Q - How's the bullet spray compared to that of s1 & 2?
A - The bullets do not spray as they did in Socom 3 / CA. You really get the feeling that you're playing Socom 1 and 2 again during gunfights.

Q - How many hits does it take to kill you with Light, Med, Heavy armor on?
A - Haven't personally tested it but a rough estimate would be 2-3 for light, 3-4 for medium, 4-5 for heavy. You also have to take into consideration your guns power. Obviously an F90 isn't going to be as effective as, say an M60.

Q - What types of wepons can silencers be put on?
A - The typical. No silencers on M60s or M14s or M16s etc etc.

Q - Any final comments to share with us?
A - The game has a lot of potential. It's nothing like Socom 3 or CA. I actually enjoy playing it again, everything is looking very promising guys. Enjoy the wait =P

Reminder: Beta starts tomorrow! You can get in right away with a Gamestop pre-order code, or one week from tomorrow via Qore episode one.

Also: Gamestop now has a $5 extra trade-in credit on PS3 games, with a minimum of three. Consider this if you're going to go pre-order Socom to get in on the beta.

It is sobriquet locked--which is really email address locked because PSN ignores sobriquets for account related things.

So you would need to use the same email address at the same time, something I do not know if Playstation allows.

Yeah, I just tried it out.. but my goodness, did those load times suck. First, it takes about 10 minutes for the game room to fill up with definite "ready" teammates, and then it takes a good 5-7 minutes just to load the game info and start the match.

Oh, and everyone and their mom is wearing a headset, however, most seem to be a slightly older crowd than the usual COD4 nonsense.

All in all, it's not bad. Just wish the load times were shorter. Had to modify my controller to at least KIND of resemble my COD4 layout, or else I'd be totally lost, not only playing this but when I tried to revert back to COD4 later.. I didn't want anything to slow down coming up on double XP weekend :)

Due to overwhelming demand for the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Public Beta, we are experiencing load related issues. These issues are causing abnormal latency, disconnects, long load times, login errors and community features such as clans and stats not functioning correctly (or at all).

We are doing everything we can to resolve these issues as quickly as possible and you should see some improvements progressively over the next couple of days. However, we do not expect to have the issues completely resolved until close to the end of next week.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

they are trying to test out the servers as hard as possible during the beta to get all their servers kinks fixed before the actual release. I think its an EXCELLENT strategy to make sure release day is as smooth as possible.

Sure your beta might not run the smoothest but it's for the best in the end.

I've played it but I honestly can't tell you all if it sucks or not... the first time I played CoD4 I didn't like it all that much because I would just respawn, die, respawn, get sniped, respawn etc.... so maybe we should give this one more than a couple games before we decide it sucks.

I didn't even get used to the controls yet.

ShaneS429
09-06-2008, 06:38 PM
I personally say that this game does not suck.

I've played every Socom and love how this game plays. Right now I have no trouble joining rooms and playing games, yes it does take a minute or two to load but once I'm in game, all is well.

I'm not going to subtract points because of any lag or loading issues as I understand this is a beta. Sure it could have gone a little smoother but I've been in betas for other games and know that these are about testing the servers and general network issues with the game.

I loved CoD:4 and I'm not saying that either is a better game. But to me they shouldn't really be compared.

I love the socom franchise and have been playing the beta today for roughly 10hours straight. I can say that I am picking this game up for sure.

OK, I finally got in 2 games. It was Crossroads at night... and with all the new additions to the map, it was a bit difficult to find my way around but I attribute that 100% to being new.

The controls are reworked and mostly for the better. Believe it or not, the sixaxis controls are very very good. They left enough of a dead zone so that you'll never lean or duck just by accident, and it's not one of those things where you have to sit upright all uncomfortable to hold the controller on a level plane. This also makes it possible, for the first time, to use ANY of the control schemes and still lean at any time without sacrificing aiming or movement.

The game feels very Socom 2'ish, and that's what we should all want. I look forward to getting back to the game and playing in broad daylight so I can see everything.

The biggest problem with shooter games in 2008 is they are ALL compard to COD4.

I had a ton of issues, but its the beta. The load times, as others have said, are ridiculously long. I've had it freeze a couple times and exiting games has caused my PS3 to restart/freeze on restart (blank screen).

I've also lost audio in games and lost my quick change weapons ability and other goofy things like that.

I'll give it another chance. Like someone said, I'm going to customize the controls as much as I can to mimic COD4 so I don't lean into a bullet when I'm trying to change weapons.

exactly, I was about to say the same thing. Games now are compared to COD4 and anyone who plays it is expecting something similar or even better in terms of frame rate and graphics.

now back to socom beta.. after trying to get into a lobby 4 times I finally got in. I actually enjoyed it but I need to play more before i give my final rating.

I'll have a PS3 in 2 weeks (no not buying one yet) so i'll let you guys know what i think about it

Played some SOCOM last night. I really like it ! graphics are not the best out there but we can't complain since it's a PSN game.
Motion controls works great like Phreaker47 mentioned.
No more connections issues but still long loading times and some lag.

patch tonight:

Socom: Confrontation Public Beta 1.10 Patch and Server update

Posted by Seth Luisi
We will be performing server maintenance and rolling out a new patch on September 9th at 5am PDT, 1200 GMT. The SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation game servers will be unavailable during the maintenance. The server maintenance is not expected to last longer than 1 1/2 hours.

SOCOM: Confrontation Public Beta 1.10 Patch

Adds support for European EULAs.
Adds support for dedicated servers located in Europe and Australia.
Addresses a number of stability and late joining issues.
Reduce the volume of the proximity chat by 50%.
The server maintenance and patch are not meant to address all issues. We will have more updates to both the server and client in the future.

Interesting that they reduced the proximity chat by 50%. Must have been a lot of complaints about that.

yeah a lot of people were complaining on PS's blog..

Can you do a private chat, where you talk to them only.. like you can on XBL?

I would love one if it's still available. Do you have any code for the motostorm demo by any chance?

I am glad to hear people find this similar to Socom1/2. I still say those were some of the best online games to date.

Unfortunately, I jumped on the 360 bandwagon when Socom went downhill back in the
PS2 era. I am really banking on this game being just as addictive as the first two. If so, I will be forced to get a PS3.

BTW, how is the lobby system compared to the Socom2 and did they take the 30+ ranks approach or stick with a select few?

I never thought that there could be a game worse than Warhawk (Warhack is the worst game ever made; become ever shittier with every update. Planes can crash into people for farks sake). There is now a worse game than Warhawk. Or at least as bad.

I do not believe it.

I have played less than 5 minutes in over two hours of "playing" this game. Es una mierda!

1.30 update out:

Just a quick heads about the new Socom Confrontation update. It is now available to download. Lets hope it fixes what needs fixing.
Below are the update notes.
* Abnormally long network synchronization issues when some users in a game have a poor network connection. This issue causes 4-7 minute (or longer) load times when late joining a game.
* Fixed an issue where respawn game late joiners were sometimes stuck in spectator mode and could not respawn into the game.
* Removed the latency detection network test which was causing some users with poor network connections to receive the network latency icon (red X).
* Fixed an issue where clients with different client versions (patches) could play together in a default medley game.
* Fixed an issue where if the session master leaves the game, late joiners could not “green up” and late join into the game.
* Fixed corrupt characters in the European and Japanese EULAs and Server News.
* Fixed many join game issues and made joining a game quicker. We are still optimizing this.
* Fixed an issue where if you add and then remove someone from your block list they were still unable to send you a message.
* Improved accuracy while moving (based on user feedback). Partial implementation. More improvements to come.
* Reduced the encumbrance penalty (based on user feedback).
* Changed the default round time for Medley games from 8 minutes to 6 minutes (based on user feedback).

Remaining bugs are:-
* Some late joiners have really bad framerate (5fps) and crash if they exit the game from the start menu. This happens at approximately 1/50 frequency.
* Some late joiners will get stuck on the round complete screen. This is timing dependent.
* Some users will crash in-game. This happens at approximately 1/100 frequency (games).
* Some late joiners get stuck on the loading screen, loading into a game. This happens at approximately 1/100 frequency.
* Green or corrupted particles appear for RPG, C4 and AT4 explosions. This happens at approximately 1/4 frequency (users).
* Further tuning and tweaking based on user feedback.

Looks like they're addressing the long join/load time issues. I'm leaving for a week and won't be able to play... by the time I get back I'm hoping to put aside enough time.

Good luck.

This weekend was horrible, It took me 4 times to get into a game, then the game was completely lagging... didn't even have time to enjoy it one bit.

have you guys seen the old school tokens for the trains in NY? with a Y cutout in the coin.

If you're on the beta, you know what i'm talking about.. worse beta ever :(

LOL! That spinning "Y" is annoying. And I still have lag issues. Not a fan so far.
