Update R4 v1.17 kernel 2008-3-18
1)Solved the brightness problem after soft-resetting
2)Solved 2107 the "Thanks" problem
3)Solved 2110 problem
"2107 problem" = "Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates" and their flash card copy protection that puts the game in demo mode, saying "Thanks for playing" after 20 minutes and resetting. That took, what, 7 days? Hope they sold a few extra carts for the effort.
"2110 problem" = "Powerplay Tennis". Didn't work before, now it does.
1.17 also fixes a screen brightness issue that can occur after a soft-reset, although I'm not exactly sure what that problem is.

It's also funny though, in light of the recent rumor that a factory producing the R4 was raided/shut down.

That happened back in October of '07.
This is a story from three days ago that they shut down:
Rumor: Factory producing flash card R4 shut down
According to a Norwegian gaming site, the factory that has produced the R4 DS flash card for the DS has been shut down. The reason that it was shut down is that it is believed that all the press attention the device has been receiving has shaken a few feathers and caused some immediate action. The article also mentions the flash cards are illegal in France and Singapore and are under review in the UK.
quote:
The Norwegian gaming news site Konsollguiden.no is reporting this (translated from Norwegian):
quote:
The factory that is producing R4DS is shutted down.
The message that came to Konsollguiden today was that the factory that is producing R4DS is shutted down. Much indicates that the press on the flashcart industry is the reason for the production stop. Flashcart is under evaluation in UK, while it's already forbidden in France and Singapore.

In stock at Leetmod right now: http://www.leetmod.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3&zenid=6415f4b8b658863a76d4998f4f0ead68

Yeah, realhotstuff has jacked their price too. They were priced competitively just a couple of months ago, but I guess the dwindling supply has caused this.

Glad I dot mine for $35 a month ago from gameyeaaah. These things will be $100 eventually if the drought continues.
R4 supports their mod chip, unlike the Wiikey team that took everyone's money and ran with it :lmao:

There was a place that sold it for $40 + shipping, which isn't so bad because I think dealextreme raised their prices recently...go search for "R4" under the deals forum, you'll find it.
EDIT: err maybe not...let me see if i can give you a link

I would just get one for $60 from leetmod right now. They're inside the U.S. and you'll get it in about 3 days via Priority Mail. It's only a $15 premium basically, and they might become more difficult to get very soon.

nxpgame.com is located in the states and has the R4 instock every once in a while, $45 I think.
Use coupon code "a2007" for a little discount..
By the way, has anyone gotten Mario Kart to work with Download Play on the R4?
Oh ya that's the store I got it from, nxpgame. They are located in NY and shipping was under a week (5-6 days).

If anyone happens to check nxgame.com on a regular basis, could you please post when they have R4's back in stock? I have several friends who are now hungry for the homebrew.

I'm debating on whether or not to buy this one from leetmod now for 65.99 (plus I dont know how much for shipping), and then ordering a 2GB micro SD card from buy.com for 12 bucks. I have a couple questions though
1. It doesn't look like the price of the R4 is going down anytime soon, but what about other alternatives like the M3? Whats the difference between the R4 on
http://www.leetmod.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3
and the M3 here
http://www.modchipcentral.com/store/Flash-Carts-p-1-c-12.html
2. What is the maximum microSD card capacity that the R4 can read? Can it read from 4GB microSD cards? And how big is the file size of each game?
3. Does anyone else have any recommended sites to get an R4 from that are cheaper? And is the R4 being sold on leetmod the R4 DS E-R or whatever, is that the latest version?
4. Can I play R4 games online and multiplayer with people who have the actual version?
5. Will I still be able to play my original games after using an R4? like is there any type of firmware "upgrade" to the DS that will keep me from playing older games and playing online?
Sorry for all the questions, but I can't seem to find specific answers to a lot of them. Thanks a lot.
1. R4 and M3 are nearly the same product. Looks like those M3's include a rumble pack and gba card so you can play gba games as well.
2. 2GB, it does not have sdhc support. Games are about 8-256mb, less after being trimmed.
3. There aren't newer versions of the R4. It's just saying it's an english one.
4. Yup yup
5. Yes, the r4 simply boots up like any game. it does not mod the ds.

Read GBATemp's reviews here: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showforum=99
I had an R4DS which I sold to a friend who wanted to get set up. I currently don't have anything in my DS but I'm looking at getting the CycloDS Evolution.
You can still play all your retail games. The firmware changes are to the R4, not the DS. The M3 is really the same thing - it used to be the more popular one until the cheaper R4 caught on. Now with supply issues the price of the R4 is unjustifiably high since it does not support Micro SDHC, which is quickly coming down in price. I had a Hot Deal yesterday (which I got flamed for, at NewEgg for 22.65 shipped for a CLASS 6 4gb A-Data Micro SDHC card).
The R4 can only play 2gb non-SDHC cards. You'll have to get a new card or delete old games if you go over capacity. 65.99 seems about right for R4 right now. Like I say, the price is too high. I bought mine at Echo Store in March '07, which now has stock at 59.99. I paid 35 a year ago. Shipped from the US: http://www.echostore.com/r4ds.html
As I said there is a supply issue so all these cards are new and fresh from the factory in China lol. No "old" cards. You will have to upgrade the firmware from the R4 team however.

I'm pretty sure the R4 is not the greatest card for homebrew...
Anyway, NXPGame.com tells you when they'll have it instock, however, you can still place an order for the R4 even though when it's not instock. They'll just ship it to you when they get it...

Why not? It has built-in DLDI support (added a while back) and there's a lot of compatible software. I have a few emulators installed on mine. Here's a compatibility wiki:
http://wiki.scorpei.com/index.php/R4_compatibility_list
Also, for those worried about the 2GB card limit: On my 2GB card, I have almost 50 games stored, as well as a dozen or so GBA games (for my EZ flash 3 in 1 slot2 cart). Of course game sizes vary, but that should give you a pretty good idea of what 2GB can give you. If anyone really thinks they must have more than that, they must be kind of nuts. Of course, you can easily swap out games at any time anyway.
And by the way, download play has been 100% fixed since FW 1.11 (now on 1.17)

I have R4s and they work well but when one died and stock was short I got a TTDS and it works fine. It certainly is worth $19 shipped (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10289).
