I had a 360 last year that broke so I voted for that option, but I also currently own a PS3 that I bought in Nov. and it has been great so far.
Also, my new PC has been running like a champ and the video card carries a lifetime warranty. I know this is a topic about consoles, but when it comes to reliability, a well built PC will be solid for years to come.

So far,
PS3 has a 1/14 ratio ( 7% )
X360 has 8/11 ( 72% )
Wii has 1/12 ratio ( 8% )

From my Sega Master System to my Wii, I've never had a system go completely haywire on me [have there been times when it was I would wanted to break the system in two? Well, sure, but that's more along the lines of "I can't beat this damned level!"... luckily, only my controllers have beared the brunt of that annoyance... poor controllers, poor, poor controllers...]

One thing I will say about the wii though, while it hasn't crapped out on me, I do get a lot of disc read errors. Usually I just eject the disc pop it back in and it works fine. I'm contemplating whether or not to send it in. It kinda reminds me of the NES back in the day where you had to blow on the cartridge.

Do systems really fry? I thought my mom used that as an excuse to stop me from playing too much video games.
Anyways...the only system I think might of fried was my Atari system from way back when I was 2 or 3 years old. I was gaming when I was still in my diapers . I was too young to remember but one day the system was gone . All I can remember was my mom telling me it "fried/broke" because my brother and I played it too much...to this day I dont know where my Atari is :( all I know was that it was a piece of wood with lots of switches sticking out of it. I still have my Nintendo though in original box in working condition .

So I deHDD'd my PS3 and lo and behold the drive contains nothing readable to any program I tried. Nothing at all. It is all a free partition.
Everything told me no. Piece of trash. Well, I figured that maybe it was in need a of a good washing and maybe that would make the datums appear. When it is done drying off I will try it again.
Wow, the PS3 community here has really grown. Over half the respondents have purchased a PS3. I remember when there were only a handful.
jr_, I've always wondered if the 2.5" internal HDD in the PS3 could be read by a PC. Figures it wouldn't be, since that would expose the system files (and thus expose them to hacking). The situation then is a lot like the hard drive on the Xbox1 which used some wacky FATX file system or some such. Hackers had to crack the filesystem and create custom programs to read and back up the Xbox1 hard drive from PC. I'd imagine it'll have to be the same way with the PS3, except the PS3 is a lot harder to crack than any console before it.

I tought that the Wii and the 360 were grossly outselling the PS3 ;)
Seems like SDers know better
Worldwide, the 360 hasn't outsold the PS3 in a long time. In the U.S., I think the 360 might have only outsold the PS3 a couple weeks this year. Things have really turned the corner and the outlook for the 360 looks grimmer and grimmer. In Europe, the 360 cut its price but still couldn't outsell the PS3 for even a week, not even in the U.K. A few more weeks of this and Microsoft will have to announce U.S. pricecuts before it loses any momentum it still has left.

I think the main reason why they fail is because of overheating issues. Just to be safe you should get a Xbox 360 Cooling fan (http://www.hardwarecooling.com/product_info.php/prod/839/Xbox_360_Xfan_Cooling_Fan). It is a small investment to pay to protect your xbox 360.

terrible idea for many reasons, those usually do more harm than good. Never feed off your console's power supply post AC to DC conversion.

That sucks. Were they the same model or did they replace it with a different one? I wonder if one model is more likely to break than another? The 40gb are supposed to have the smallest, coolest parts from what I understand. I don't know if that means they are more reliable though.

It was a 60GB'er that I bought at launch. I didn't open it for a month and a half (was going to resell it), and finally caved and opened it. The optical drive (or HDD, it was hard to tell) was shot on it, as it would take 5-10 minutes to load the games I had, both on disc and on the hard drive.
I called and got it exchanged with a new one, which turned out to be cracked upon arrival. I didn't want to deal with a cracked console, so I called them, sent it back, and got a new one.
The new one I got works great, except for the fan speed controller on it. When it warms up, the fan speed kicks in and it gets louder (normal). But then it stays at that speed and volume all the way until I turn it off. It's some what annoying, but I'll just swap it out this November when my 2-year extended warranty runs out.
Now, I'm not saying this to be a PS3-hater. I LOVE my PS3! I've had PlayStations since the PS1 back in 3rd grade. I'm just pointing out that there ARE some people that have had broken PS3s before (myself included). Do I hate Sony for it? No, I'm just really unlucky. But broken consoles ARE possible for any console you look at.

Definitely, if it happens, it happens. No one need to look at people under a microscope when they are unlucky with a console branded as reliable. I mean, Toyotas are reliable right? But I'm sure there are people who had it break down the first year. ^^

Then we would need verification that people had a broken PS3 or Wii as well, right? Otherwise only votes for broken 360's would be limited and that would obviously mess up the results. Some people would either not know how to prove it or not care enough to go through the trouble.

Odd indeed. So if we assume that every multiple console owner that reported a broken 360 was lying and excluded them, there would be 24 with good Xbox 360s and 20 with broken ones.... That would cut it down to 45%.

So.. not a single person has a working PS3 and 360 (0%), without owning all 3 consoles... yet 50% of the people with broken 360s also had PS3s....
That's odd.
Why is it odd?
Here's my timeline:
May 07: Bought 360 and had a blast playing it until...
June 07: Noticed freezing on a certain part of R6:Vegas, but chalked it up to a disc problem and did nothing about it. No red lights, just freezing and having to reset it.
July 07: I heard that 360's were known for overheating. I tried aiming a large box fan to feed the side vents more air and this seemed to help with the freezing problems.
August 07: Got the infamous RRoD and poked around online for more information. I knew an electrical tech at my work who used to work for an electronics repair shop. I took my 360 to them and they gave me a breakdown of the problem, possible causes, and likelihood of it happening again.
September 07: I was out of warranty(broken seal) so I decided to cut my losses and I sold my power brick, hard drive, controller, and broken console on ebay and got $200 for it all.
November 07: I heard about R&C coming for PS3, the $100 Sony card deal, and had been wanting a Blu-Ray drive, so I bought a PS3 and have been enjoying that ever since.
So the point of this whole drawn out post, is that it's not "odd" at all that someone like me converted from once owning a 360 to now owning a PS3. I thought about simply buying another 360 but reliability is important and when I pay $400 for a console, I want it to work and work well for at least 3 years, not 3 months. You may think I'm a sony fanboy or MS hater or whatever you wish to label me, but I've stated many times here that I thought and still think the 360 is a better gaming console, when it worked. I also have stated that I think the PS3 is a much better value and have used it much more than my 360 and prefer its versatility over the now seemingly slighter advantage that the 360 has in the gaming department.
I once owned a 360, it broke, so I bought a PS3. I know many others that have done the same. It's not odd, and is actually more common than you may be willing to admit.

My timeline - I got the wii christmas of 2006, got the PS3 09/07, got the 360 christmas of 2007 - RROD after a day and got it returned in 3 weeks and no problem since then.
Most people's secondary console is the wii - usually people have PS3/wii, or 360/wii, or 3 consoles. People who had the 360 RROD on them sometimes get a PS3 afterwords, and it seems logical to me.

Bought my original 360 on launch and it lasted me all the way until December when it got the RROD. I thought I was lucky to have it as long as I did without any problems, especially knowing that everyone else and their mother (literally, my mom bought one and it instantly RROD on her, she took it back and got a new one) has had them fail, RROD or other problems.
I have a newer one that Microsoft gave me in place of my older one and it has worked great since I got it a couple months ago, but ever since I got the RROD, I haven't really played it that much.
I bought a PS3 earlier this month and so far so good. In comparison I still like XBL and the 360 controller better, but I can't really complain about free online with the PS3. I'm just waiting for Home, LBP, MGS4, FFXIII, etc. to come out!

I totally get the concept of "after my 360 fried I got the other top of the line console" and that does make sense. I just find it odd that there isn't *one* person who just has a working PS3 and 360. They either have all 3, or if they have both, the 360 is dead.
And no, I'm not saying the poll is invalidated at all.. but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if some people voted against the 360, either by just voting a dead 360, or by voting working wii/PS3, dead 360.

Obviously you'd need evidence of dead 360's to truly validate the results, but then again, wouldn't that go for any poll? There is always an inherent inaccuracy since the results are at the mercy of the voter's honesty.
I don't have much proof personally, aside from my photos I took of the parts to sell on ebay. Or you could try to search and find some of my older posts when I first registered explaing my situation(unless you think I was a Sony spy all along sent here to fabricate an elaborate story on how my 360 broke.)

To be fair, it definitely isn't a "scientific" poll by any means. But even if the results are way off (margin of error 50%?), it still says something about the reliability of various systems.
Xbx360 seems like a great system, I don't have one, but If I had moer $$ I probably would buy one. It does have some reliability issues. i have Rock band, and I love Rock Band, but guess what, teh guitar and drums have reliability issues also. I still love it though :D

My 360 works now (Microsoft sent me a new one), but when I got the RROD that basically was the deciding factor into getting a PS3 for me.

I dropped a PS2 down a flight of stairs once when moving. THat did it. It slid off the top of the box.
I won't do that again :D

Maybe this poll needs a part 2 asking people which system they got first, second and possibly third to see if there is a trend.

It's crazy how some people are sooo devoted to micro$oft that they are willing to put up with RROD over and over again...

i said before it wasn't reliable.
however, even anecdotally, even if the numbers are way off, it's hard to compare 50+ % for one system to < 10% for the other systems.

My wii and PS3 have worked fine so far, but I've had the Wii longer.
