I just had a cashier tell me she could not use 2 coupons on 2 packs of diapers because the coupons state "Do not double" and according to her I was "doubling up on the deal"! Hahahaha! I just laughed out loud!

I was buying 3 Sunday newspapers for the coupons and the person behind me in line said, "There has to be an article about you in there, am I right?" Not exactly...

I'm with you - same thing happened to me with the MyCokeRewards coupon. I gave all the usual valid arguments and finally said, "Ok, go ahead and use one of your helper clerks to put back the additional $100 worth of groceries in my cart which will take at least an hour of their time. When considering any benefits they may be receiving as a union member, their wage, your salary + benefits for time it takes to explain why they have to do this and the time it has taken for you to argue with me...that adds up to about a $150 loss for you today and a $105 gain for the Albertsons across the street that appreciates my business....all because you won't take a legitmate, manufacturer issued, coupon for a $4.99 product in which you will receive $5.08 for." (Renton, WA)
My local Safeways insist that I cannot get anything for free after using a coupon. They "are just not going to allow me to get anything for free" It would be funny if it was not so pathetic. They strictly adhere to it, regardless of their coupon policy, reminding me that managers can reject any coupon they want. They say that they are rejecting mine because it would mean I'd get the item for free. When I phone corporate they tell me the manager has that right. So no chance ever of using a $1 coupon on a $1 item etc. The line of, not going to allow me to get an item for free........UGH!! Allow me????? (Puyallup, WA)

When I used to buy multiple papers the cashier said "Why are you buying so many papers? Did someone die?" Why would I buy so many papers if someone died? Am I going to save like 10 copies of their obituary or something? Thats just weird....

I made my rounds to stapled for their far items and this cashier had no clue. I walked up and she started to scan off 10ish items that were all FAR and also the peachtree FAR. She stopped at 5 and said that I couldn't get any more FAR items as it was store policy. I had never jeard that before and inquired was it new and the reason why.
She stated "because our receipt printer won't print out more than 5 rebate receipts at a time".
I knew this was just rediculous but said that it didn't matter as I was doing easy rebates and only needed 1 extra for the peachtree. I then handed her the 25 off 100. With a confused look on her face she said that I couldn't use that.
Again I asked why.
She said the total wasn't $100... I told her the peachtree was more than that by itself. She said no, because all the items were free there was absolutely no way that would go through.
I said just scan it and let's see. Sure enough BEEP, all went through fine. At least she was smart enough to say, so you are going to MAKE $25 on this. I just smiled and nodded then wished her a nice day.

Went to Staples the other day. Asked the cashier if they take Office Depot coupons. He said "Yes, as long as its an original. No home print coupons." After he rang me up I gave him my 10/50 Office Depot coupon and he looked at it for a second and said... "We can't take that! Its for Office Depot!" I mentioned what he had said before ringing me up and he replied "I didn't think you had one with you." I asked to speak to his manager, he walked into the office, came out and said.. "She can't talk with you. She's on the phone."
I really thought about calling the store from the check out and asking for the manager...Who I am on a first name basis with at this store.

Helpful shopping tip for Tom Thumb - just because it is edible and Frozen does not mean it is Frozen Food.
Bought 5 lean cuisines and 1 Steak-Umm, $5 off $15 cou did not deduct. Self Checkout teenager says I have to go to service desk and they will fix. Service desk lady looks at my receipt and looks at me like I am a third grader who doesn't understand long division.
She: Well, you see, the Steak-Umm is considered meat, not many people understand how this works.
Me:  :sleepy: Yes...
She: So this item wasn't part of the frozen food deal.
[Proceeds to show me where the receipt has the LC's categorized as "REFRIG/FROZEN" and the Steak-Umms as "MEAT"]
Me: Ma'am - this item is frozen, and it is food. This coupon says 5 dollars off 15 on Any Frozen Food.
She: This item isn't part of the frozen food deal.
Again, I could not make this up. I ask to speak to her supervisor. She tells him the whole spiel that Steak-Umm is not frozen food. Manager asks her to help the next customer in line. Manager pops open the till and gives me a dang $5 bill.
ETA: Apparently this Q excluded meat, whatever TT defines that to be. So my bad, I guess!

Had a .30/1 Chobani yogurt coupon beep at SCO and had to have the cashier override it. It was the 2nd Q of mine that beeped on that run (the other beeped for overage,) and I couldn't figure out why the yogurt Q beeped. I stupidly asked the cashier if she knew why it didn't scan properly. She asked if I got the greek one... I said yes, and she goes "that's probably why. It tries to match everything up but when the product isn't in english, it can't find it."

That must be why the coupons I use for Ortega products never scan and always beep. Since they are Mexican, the computer only knows English and can't find the Spanish items. :lmao:

Walgreens assistant manager wouldn't take an internet coupon from the manufacturer's site because he couldn't see the picture to tell what size the product should be even though it was described in writing as "any". Told me if I wanted to use another one in the future I would have to blow up the picture so he could see it! That earned them a letter to the regional manager.

This is my FAVORITE thread! Always entertaining.
RandomMisc: So that means that all of our ethnic food coupons are in another language?!?! Awesome! Think of all the languages I'll get to learn: Chinese for Kikkoman Qs, Spanish for Ortega Qs, and maybe even Danish if I find an Enteman's or Sara Lee Q that only works on danishes!!
A small, local grocer doubles coupons and they have Yakisobas for 89c each. I was there for other items, so I bought like 12 of them since I was there. They only had 3 flavors, so the gal typed in how many of each flavor and then rang one of each, to save her from having to repack the cardboard I was taking them home in. When I handed her the coupons, she said she could only take three because she only physically rang 3 of the items. So does that mean that because she only physically rang 3 of the packages the register only charges me for three items?!?!? Not likely. The stores' registers are actually pretty smart (no overage) I'm thinking it can handle something as complex and addition and multiplication, unlike my poor cashier. Bless her little heart. (That's southern for 'what an idiot!')
She rang all my Qs and miracle of miracles!!!- every one of the coupons attached perfectly! Hmmm. I'm thinking the stoned 16 yr old is NOT very well trained on coupons. (Or calculators!!)

I brought my two ragu's and a box of pasta to the register. She scans my items and I hand her the Q.
Wmart employee: I can't take this.
Me: Huh? Why not?
Her: You can't get both the Ragu and pasta free. Anyways it's $1.72 and the coupon says $1.25.
Me: Huh? What? The Ragu is not free. The pasta is free. See right there the coupon says Free Pasta (up to 1.25) when you buy two Ragu. And the pasta is only 1.18.
Her: No it's $1.72 but it doesn't matter you can't use it anyways.
Me: What? The pasta is 1.18. Just look at the receipt.
Luckily, I didn't even have to ask for a manager because they're on heightened awareness do to recent laptop thefts. The CSM approached as soon as they saw a delay in our transaction and fortunately it was someone who was able to read the coupon. She was also able to look at the receipt and read "Ragu 1.72, Penne 1.18"... So I thanked the CSM and handed my copy of the coupon policy to the cashier to help continue her coupon education :)

I had a similar experience at a CVS this week. I was using the $5 Physician's Formula online coupon on a Physician's Formula eyeliner set.
:coupon beeps:
Shift Supervisor: I don't think this product is eligible.
Me: Huh? Why? I think it's because it's an online coupon.
S.S.: It has to be for Physician's Formula Product.
Me: ...This is a Physician's Formula product. It says $5 off Mineral Wear or any other Physician's Formula product.
S.S.: :points to picture: But it has to be for Product. You have eyeliner.
Me: But eyeliner is one of their products.
S.S.: But it's not Product.
Me: ...What the-- You know what, nevermind. I'll go get "Product."
I bring back the item in the picture, he scans it, and the coupon beeps again.
S.S.: Oh. Well, it still has to be for any Product items.

Also, today at Ralphs a cashier told me they can only double coupons that specifically state "Double This Coupon" on top.

I had purchased a package of beano at some point that had a peelie manufacturers coupon for $1.50 off the purchase of any fresh vegetable(s). The back of the the peelie happened to say "when you buy this beano, get $1.50 coupon towards..." Well when I tried using it at Target, the cashier said "You can't use this because I don't know if you actually bought the beano." Um, what?! I tried to tell her that if a product has a peelie coupon, you don't have to use that coupon in the same transaction! Purchasing the product gives me the coupon to use whenever I want. She wouldn't budge, but I'd used the exact same coupon several days before at another Target without a problem. *rolls eyes*

Sorry, but the cashier was right in this instance. If it was a part of the package you would have had to cut through, like on the inside of a box, you'd have more of a chance of proving that you already bought it. But this is one of those annoying coupons that is necessary to use right away instead of saving it. For most peelies, you are right, you can save them for another time, but those are for the actual product, let's say for example "1.50off Beano". If they hadn't restricted this one, you know a ton of people would be peeling them off and getting free vegetables, and never buying the Beano. :(

:lmao:@ Do not double I've had three pretty good ones....
1) One time I had two pepsi coupons from a rebate promotion. I bought two pepsi items and handed a CVS cashier the two pepsi coupons. He said he could not accept the second coupon because they said "DO NOT DOUBLE" on them.
2) My local super walmart prints out a receipt tape that lists the reason your coupon was rejected if it scans and beeps. After trying to buy a frozen food item with a coupon, I was given my coupon back and a slip that said "no matching item or incorrect size". The funny thing was that the coupon description said "valid on any size / variety" and the item I bought happened to be the exact size and variety pictured right on the face of the coupon.
3) At Rite-Aid I was told by a cashier that my coupon did not work because the item was on sale and that the coupon would go through next week when the item was back at regular price. He actually called a manager over and asked whether coupons could be used on sale items.

I get a good laugh at reading some of the posts and haven't had any weird stories to report until now.
I had a coupon for a free box of Cheerios I received in the mail from signing up online that I needed to redeem because it expired today.
This happened at a local grocery store.
Cashier scanned the coupon and it beeped to input amount. She didn't know what to do so she turned to the other cashier and asked what to do.
Cashier: We can't take those coupons.
Me: You don't take coupons?
Cashier: We can't take coupons for items that are free.
Me: Why not?
Cashier: I don't know we were just told not to
Me to my cashier: Umm is there anyone you can ask about it?
So instead my cashier decided to try and do it herself and she input the full amount, two cents over the price of the cereal and it took it off. Stupid honest me I told her it should only be $3.78 not $3.80 and didn't want her to get in trouble. She voided the amount off and said thanks she appreciated it and rescanned it and tried to enter $3.78 but it wouldn't take it off. Getting nervous I said well if it only works the other way I guess two cents probably isn't a big deal. All the while the other cashier is watching with this look of disdain on her face. My cashier called up a young man who was in charge and fixed it no problem. I wanted to stick my tongue out at the other cashier but bit it instead. LOL.
Anyway it's possible that they were told that fake or forged coupons were going around and not to take any coupons for a free product. Although this store I don't like to shop at because they have the most idiotic store policies. I wanted to get a raincheck on a sale item and they wouldn't give it to me. I said well you are out of it why not and the person in charge told me because there was one day left of the sale. I said well do you get a truck in tomorrow and she said no. So I said well how can you expect me to purchase the item if you won't be getting anymore in. She wouldn't budge and said she still wouldn't issue me a raincheck.

Clerk: No we dont.
me: Can I speak with the manager
Clerk: might be a couple hours before he gets back. he went to the dentist
(circa 1995)
me: You forgot to deduct the coupon for the free Gorton's fish
clerk: I got it. It's in my hand
me: I know you're holding it but my total is over $8. I had all totally free coupons
clerk: You do have to pay tax you know.
me: Tax on $25 would not be $8
clerk (to woman behind me) What the hell does she care? She saved enough already
me (to clerk at next lane): Please call the manager
Manager: You need to deduct the coupon
clerk (to woman behind me) What was she b!tching about? You'd think saving that much would have been good enough for her (I'm still in line at this point)
I then found the manager and complained and he said they were short on staff and he would fire her as soon as the shift was over. I never saw her again
CVS last month:
Clerk: It says any candy or single serve beverage, but you didn't buy "any". You got this bag of candy.
Me: Any means "without specification". It means I can use it on my choice of cany or single serve beverage up to $2. This is my choice.
Clerk: But it doesn't mean that.
*Me pulling out cell phone, dialing corporate*
Clerk: You can't get anything over on this register
Me: Then why not try it?
Clerk: Wow. It did work.

Best one EVER:
November 2010
Me: The M&Ms were suppossed to be on sale 2/$5
Clerk: The register knew you had a coupon in your hand and so it rang it in full price?
Me: The register KNEW I was going to hand you a coupon for a sale item?
Clerk: Yes, it's programed to know that and charge full price.
(more discussion)
Manager: The register knew you had a coupon in your hand so it charged you full price.
Me: You mean to tell me before I even hand you a coupon the register knows what I have in my hand?
Manager: Yes
(more discussion)
Manager: The sale price doesn't include the holiday M&Ms
Me; I didn't realize that, can we try this with non-holiday bags
Manager: It still won't work. It will still ring it in full price since it knows you are going to use a coupon. Plus you can't use a Register Reward and get one back.
Me: Yes, I can. Not only can you use coupons on sale items, you can use Register Rewards and get them back in the same transaction AS LONG AS they are from different companies
Manager: It won't work (crossing his arms)
Me: Yes it will, please try it.
Manager: It won't work.
Me: Would you try it just to humor me and if it won't work I'll believe you.
Me 2 minutes later, walking out with four bags of M&Ms I paid $6 for and $5 in Register Rewards. :)

Posted in the wags forum but this happened yesterday with a manager.
1)first told me I could not use a $3 on a $2.99 coupon
give wags coupon policy to her
2)then told me they could not manually adjust the MQ down to $2.99
give wags coupon policy to her
3)then told me wags does not take IPs
give wags coupon policy to her again
4)then told me the IPs were copies i.e. I committed fraud
had her read the 2 IPs with different transaction codes
oddly enough after all of that she became friendly but wow it was like pulling teeth there for awhile.

@ Kmart
Supervisor: You can only use one coupon. It says one per purchase
Me: Right, I'm purchasing 4 items..
Supervisor: No, it means 1 per transaction.
Me: Then it would say 1 per transaction, not per purchase.
Gave up and told her to ring each item as a separate transaction. I get so frustrated with this argument! :vomit:

I have gotten that 3 times this week but have used one persuasive argument that works everytime. I pull out my huge binder and tell the cashier this is my coupon binder and this is what I do. Each time they just immediately ring it up correctly.

This is probably a common reason, but it's the first time I've gotten it. I was buying two like items and using a coupon for each (I don't even remember what it was now) and the $1/1 MQ said do not double. Lady said she couldn't take them both b/c the Q said do not double. Wow, really? I've often wondered if crazy people know they are crazy, now I'm starting to wonder if idiots know their plight?
I then explained what doubling meant and that I was not trying to double by using 2 Qs on 2 items. She still looked like her head was going to implode b/c I handed her 6 Qs for my modest tranx.
The previous week at the same store (Devil-mart, of course) I had a lady tell me that she couldn't price match a 99c/lb package of strawberries because their strawbs are sold by the carton NOT by the pound. 'So this clearly marked 1 lb carton of strawberries is NOT sold by the pound?!?' In the same tranx I couldn't get my PMed 50c ea mangoes b/c their mangoes were ringing up by the pound. I walked away from the mangoes, but the mgr backed me up on the strawberries.

I replied no, today is 4/23 & the expiration date is 4/30 -- see?
cashier: Oh, I was looking over here -- pointing to the SPANISH part of the Q which has the date as

My binder FTW.
Today I was in publix getting those bogo powerades with the bogo MQs. The customer service manager came over to hep the cashier and without looking up told me that I could not use the MQs with their special because I had to purchase it and the MQ did not count. I went 'umm' and she look up and saw my open binder stuffed full of coupons and said never mind and rang it up. I guess she figured that anyone with a binder is probably not a noob coupon user lol.

I had to give a math lesson to a cashier at my grocery store. It was one of those deals where if you bought 4 boxes of cereal you got $6 off your order. Which we know, is $1.50 off each box.
The cereals were $3.00 each, and I also had a .75 cent coupon for each box (which doubles to $1.50.)
Now, we all know that 3x4=$12 and that $12-($1.50x4)-$6=0.
The cashier had a very hard time with the math of .75x2=$1.50 as well as $6.00/4=$1.50 and $1.50=$1.50=$3.00 or free.
Not sure why I got all red faced & embarrassed but dayum. Took forever to make the light bulb come on!!
i have a question...
SCENARIO 1: Once i went to rainbow. I had 3 different coupons. 1) 1$ off tide any stain release. which i got from internet. 2) 2 $ OFF FROM ANY TIDE STAIN RELEASE WHICH I GOT from tide itself .. 3) 3$ off any tide release which i got from a paper insert.
I bought one tide stain release for 6$ value but could not use 2 of my coupons also... Finally i used the 3 4 off coupon and bought it for 3 $... since they were different coupons dont they work on one product??
Scenario 2: I had 2 different coupons. 1) 1 $ off any 2 boxes of kelloggs cornflakes which i got from internet coupon... 2) 2 $ off kellogs any cereal which i got from newspaper insert.
i bought 2 packs of kellogs conrflakes and the counter lady accepted only 1 coupon.. Is that ok...??? since i bought 2 boxes cant i double??

I had a cashier at Walgreens a few weeks ago ask me if my coupons are expired. I only had 3 coupons - 2 of which were the same (for Always pads) and I think the Luster coupon. I've dealt with her before and I swear - she's barely breathing at times. So I didn't even bother telling her that their new scanners will tell them if the coupon is expired. She would not have understood. She didn't even bother looking at the coupons herself in the beginning.
I said, "no, they're not expired. They don't expire until April 30th"..
She said, "what is today's date?"
And I said, "uhm the 13th"
And she said, "hmmm.. of what month?"
I said, "It's April"..
Then she finally looks at the coupon and says "4 - 13 - 2011".. then she proceeds to count with her fingers what "January, Feb, March, April".. and realizes it's the fourth month ~ April.
Once she counted on her fingers and verified, she scanned..and it wasn't that painful.. but my gawd.. I am perplexed how someone can not know what month it is. I can understand at the beginning of the month maybe -- but we were half way through the month.

Tide - Only one coupon per item, no stacking of coupons, it doesn't matter if they are all different. The coupon attachs to the one product. Some stores MIGHT let you use a store coupon in conjunction with the manufacturer Q.
Cornflakes - Since the coupon was $1 off 2, it attached itself to two products. Doubling does not mean using 2 coupons. It means the store doubles the coupon value for you, this varies from store to store. Some may double up to .99 and some $1, and some fully double up to $1. So for example, lets say the coupon was .75 off 2 cereals. You may use one coupon to buy the 2 cereals. Now depending on the store, it could double up to $1 or $1.50, just depends on the store's policy.

Has anybody ever had a cashier who "missed" scanning one of your coupons and then acted really nervous, either repeating herself or even forgetting to bag your stuff? This happened to me on two occasions with two different cashiers and the only reason I can think of for this sudden onset of nervous behavior is they intentionally didn't scan the coupon and wanted to use the coupon for themselves later.
What would you do in this situation if you don't realize the cashier didn't scan one of your coupons until afterwards?

I would say something. I would not accuse them of anything but just tell them that they missed a coupon.
And from having worked in stores I can tell you that cashiers sometimes do take coupons. And they keep catalinas. I worked in a store where a cashier kept people's catalinas(they $1 or $2 off your next purchase type) and then used them at the end of her shift to pay for stuff. Everyone knew she was doing it but the managers said she had worked there for a long time and was going to retire soon and they didn't want to make things bad for her when she was so close to being retired.

I think it more processing coupon so quickly! I doubt it has to do with employees want to use the coupon. It could be honest mistake. Or, it more likely cashier hating coupon customer so they do not want you get coupon savings from every savings.
I seen this from Vons Cashiers more than statically possible. I give them coupon few a time and stare at the monitor. If they want all your coupons, you still give them a few at a time. Act apologetic to the cashier and truly apologies to customer waiting in line.
Sad to say, Extreme Couponing Show may be increasing coupon customer hostility.

I'd say it's more likely just a mistake. I usually watch real close to make sure all coupons are scanned (and doubled if the store does that) and if I have a lot of coupons I'll hand them a few at the time usually saying something like "they're sticking together".
I had an incident at the grocery store a few weeks ago, where Powerade was on sale for $1. I had coupons for $0.75 off 2, the store doubles up to 5 like coupons. So, I could get 10 bottles that would be $0.25 each after coupons. The cashier scans the first 4 Qs fine, but the 5th wouldn't scan. She checks the number of bottles on the counter (10) and of course there's no reason it shouldn't work. She manually enters the coupon, but it doesn't double. We go back and forth a bit, but finally she knocks off another $0.75. Once I got outside, I looked at the receipt and figured out what the problem was. She missed scanning one of the bottles.
I finally caught an episode of that Extreme Couponing show. I thought I was a coupon Jedi, but these people... :jawdrop:

Alright this one is sort of a mybad to begin with. I tried to use 9 of the RA in ad Qs, because of their $10 UP wyb $30 Neutrogena. I just wanted to do them all at once because the tracking sometimes lags on these and it's the last day of the sale, so I didn't really have time to go back to wait for them to "catch up" later.
Cashier asks the manager if I can use these. The manager comes over to tell me nope, you can only use one. Then proceeds to say when you have 5 or more coupons, it is gangcutting and it is against federal law! I told them to void the transaction and left without buying anything. I respect their right to limits, but such misinformation and and accusations of breaking the law are not appropriate.
I'm a little tempted to go back to the store and show them what gang cutting actually means. (for the record, none of the coupons I was trying to use were stacked and cut. I had cut them out individually over the course of the week)

I just used some of those today at my local walmart too. The cashier was sweet (a lot of them there are like coupon nazis). She just double checked what I bought to what the coupon said and put them through. But when the balance went neg and she had to get a CSM I thought the CSM was pop a vessel in her head.:omg: She kept staring at each of the coupons individually.
She tried to use that excuse, then she tried the transaction vs purchase argument. I didn't budge and started pulling out the coupon policy. She decided then to just hand over the cash back. I felt bad for the cashier cause I could hear the CSM complaining "That just isn't right".
Sad but all that for a neg .86 balance

JFYI, most blinkies are coded in a non-standard format and are input at the store level. I don't know where these blinkies came from, but if they weren't from Wally, that's why they were beeping.

I had the opposite a couple of weeks ago the cashier at WAGS rang up my Stride Spark and I gave her BOGO coupons the gum was $1on sale I think for 2/$3 and there was a .50 IVC so $1.25 each after the IVC so of course I did the MQ first she should have put $1.50 on them but she insisted that the MAX value of the coupon which was $1.99. I told her nah they are $1.50 she continued to insist she HAD TO put them in for $1.99. SO I got overage on them all. Got to love cashiers that know everything and nothing all at the same time.

Many of the blinkies I find in the supermarket, start with a DND 9. This causes beeping at most drugstores and Walmart too it appears.

This Sunday @ Albertsons
I had 3 Jose Ole Taco Shells (.99 each), 7 Jose Ole Taco seasoning(.49 each), with (3) $1/3 Jose Ole products and (3) Albertsons doublers.
The cashier didn't really refuse the coupons, but wanted to double 1 for 2.00 and the other 2 for $1.47 because 3 Taco seasoning was only $1.47 so she couldn't double over the value of the 3 items.
I spent at least 10 minutes explaining thatthe three items can be 1 Taco Shell and 2 Taco seasoning for a total of $1.97, meaning she should double all three to 1.97 it was only $1 difference, but I would much rather pay .49 than 1.49

She didn't refuse my coupon, but it was an odd situation.
I went to my local grocery store this morning (Shop n Save) and I had several printable coupons. She really scrutinized the $.50/1 Duncan Hines Brownie mix coupon. She then walked over to the service desk and showed it to a cashier there. Then she walked into a back room. When she came back she was like, yep this is a good one. I was . She was nice and didn't make a fuss about any other ones, something about that one just threw her off, but heck if I know what it was. It had one of those QR barcodes on it, perhaps that was why?
She didn't blink at my $1.50/1 Soft Scrub IPs. And I've since read their coupon policy and found out that they aren't supposed to accept IPs for more than 50% of the retail price of the item. The Soft Scrub was clearanced to $2.35.

I love when pharmacists do transactions.
I was doing a transaction at an RA pharmacy because I needed some Claritin D, and I was buying other stuff together with it. I used 2 like coupons in my transactions and the pharmacist, after reading the coupon, gave me the "This coupon says one per purchase" line. I started explaining to him the difference between a purchase and a transaction when he interrupted me, scanned the like coupon, and said, "Don't worry, I've made an exception for you because you are our customer." Sounds like a CSR!

Was at target I went to an old lady since it was the shortest line (big mistake). She looked scared and called someone else over. I went to another line with the new person low manager or supervisor not sure.. was told every line in the book.
The purchase vs transaction story. (Didn't want to argue so I said ok ring me up separate)
She LICKED her fingers and rubbed the bar code and proceeded on telling me that they were fake copies because the ink rubbed off on some. (I was like no you spit on them is why they rubbed off, the copies that didn't get rubbed off came from a LASER printer and the other ones were INKJET). (Calls someone and was told coupons were legit)
Said the coupon wouldn't work because item was on clearance. (Calls the real manager on walkie and got told to proceed)
The coupon wont go through since its going to be less then what I purchase it for. (Calls the real manager on walkie AGAIN and got told to stop arguing and proceed. She then hit one button for every coupon and transaction went smoothly)

In my sweetest voice I would have told him, "Go ahead and call the police and while we are waiting on them, I'm calling your corporate office to file an official complaint against you and your store. When I hang up with them, I'm calling the local news. I'm sure they would be interested in a story about a coupon shopper that was arrested at WALGREENS after trying to get them to adjust a coupon down 1 cent which according to your coupon policy is perfectly legal."

I went to Walgreens and the item I was buying was on sale for 99 cents. I wanted to use a $1.00 off coupon so the cashier would just do an overide for 99 cents, I mentioned this to her and she said that she had to check with the manager. Manager said "No. Using coupons this way was fraud." I had alerady checked the store policy but did not have it with me. I went to work and printed the Walgreens policy off the internet and went back. Same scenario. This time the manager told me that the store policy that I printed off of the stores website was fraudalent and if I did not immediately leave the store, he would call and have me arrested for coupon fraud.
You should have encouraged him to call so that the police would come and get him some help at a mental hospital.
I hope you contact the company and make a complain. Or get in touch with their district manager. That was ridiculous.

This just happened to me at S&S the week before Halloween...I was buying 4 bags of candy and using two $1/2 coupons...one of the coupons beeped and the clerk decided the reason was that I can only use one coupon per day and said "if you come back tomorrow you can use that other coupon" !!!!!
oh and this is the same store (different clerk; different day) that insisted that a coupon that stated ANY bag of Fun-size candy (10.3 oz or larger) meant I had to buy Fun-Size not SNICKERS !!!!!!!! when i tried to explain that fun-size referred to the size of the candy bar she insisted "no the size of the the candy bar has to be 10.3 oz or larger" !!!!!!!!!!!!
in both instances my jaw just hung open and I stood there in amazement. what will they think of next ???
(in the 1st instance the reason the 2nd coupon beeped was i had accidentally grabbed a bag of Nestle butterfingers instead of 4 Mars products- figured this out once i got home !!!! )

I had a mgr. accidentally rip a bogo Q while scrutinizing it , tape it back together, begrudgingly write the amt on the Q, then refuse to take it because wouldn't scan. I said "That was a perfectly good coupon and you ruined it!" in the highest pitched voice I've ever heard come out of my mouth and knew it was time for a couponing break.
I had a cashier put the stack of coupons on the belt and let them all go under the conveyor. As I stood there in disbelief she said sorry and told me the total as if it didn't matter and I was going to pay full price.

This was a few months ago, but I was reading this thread and laughing, so thought I would share my story.
We grocery shop at Winco. One day, I had this sweet, bubble-headed little cashier. Transaction moves along fine. I hand over a SINGLE IP for Sara Lee flatbread.
Cashier: (looks coupon over carefully, smiles, tries to hand it back to me) I'm sorry we don't take these.
Me: You don't... take coupons? I use coupons here every week.
Cashier: No, we don't take THESE kind.
Me: You don't take coupons for Sara Lee prodcuts?
Cashier: No, THESE kind. The internet kind.
Me: What? I use them here all the time. Is this a new policy?
Cashier: Yes! We don't take them because it is FRAUD!
Me: (irritated at this point because she basically just insinuated that I'm so kind of criminal, but trying to remain calm) Alright, I'll just save it to use at Walmart.
I march over to Customer Service (like 10 feet away), explain the situation. The gal's eyeballs bug out of her head when I tell her what happened. She just says, "I'm so sorry. Let me give you cash back for the coupon right now! We'll make sure the cashier is retrained."
Thank you, Winco!!!!! Whew!

That reminds me of a time that I went to an RA that I've never been to before and tried to use an IP. They refused the IP because they said their policy states they do not accept them. Turns out that was true.... several years ago. I guess they never got the memo from corporate. That's why communications problems between corporate and RA stores will never surprise me.

Got Revlon Emery Boards at RA, the $1/1 any Revlon Beauty Tool Q beeped. Cashier reads the fine print, (....Revlon will redeem this coupon for face value plus 8¢ handling.....), then says "You can't use this, it only works on the face value." Like "face value" was a Revlon Product. I told her that line means that Revlon will reimburse the store $1.08 for this Q. I asked for the manager, she came over and made the cashier enter all 4 Q manually.

culturelle and estroven coupons (both known beepers @ RA)
Cashier-"Anytime a coupon beeps, it means RA will not get reimbursed from the manufacturer. I'm going to take them, but basically, RA just lost $6 on your purchase"
ya just have to laugh.
A cashier at Rite Aid refused my $5 Centrum ProNutrients coupon with the new GS1 bar code because she said we only accept coupons that start with a 5 and these do not start with a 5.
Here's my MORON shift supervisor's reaction when the Culturelle coupon beeped at Rite Aid:
"We can't accept that. It's counterfeit," he says.
"No it's not, it's from their Facebook page," I protest.
He marches over to the clipboard where the store memos are and returns with a page showing an IP and big black marker "COUNTERFEIT" over the bar code. "See?" he says, triumphantly.
I peer disbelievingly at the coupon. "That's a $4 coupon for Camel cigarettes," I say.
"Exactly!" he says.
"That has nothing to do with Culturelle. It's Camel," I say.
"They're all counterfeit," he says. "All Internet coupons?" I ask, wanting to see how far this is going to go. "Yes, they're all counterfeit," he insists.
Sigh.

50+ tide trial sizes in the bin at Wally. Right away had a feeling it wasn’t going to go well, but decided to give it a shot.
"Customer Service Manager" says the $2.00 coupon can’t be used because it’s not valid on the trial size. I show him the words that say “ANY TIDE DETERGENT”. He says that ANY doesn’t include the trial size. I tell him that coupons usually will say “excludes trial size” and that most Tide coupons do say that, but this one specifically doesn’t. He tells me that I am wrong, that a valid coupon would say “INCLUDES trial size”. He also said that his accountant and “CO” (whatever that is) told him not to take this coupon.
I called the store and asked to speak to a manager about their coupon policy. Was on hold for 5 minutes and hung up. Called right back and no one answered the phone.

I wish that coupons would be printed as little fake dollar bills, so maybe people could be helped to figure out that coupons are like money for the store. No matter how much they "know" that there store will get reimbursed for the coupons, I feel like they don't actually understand it?
EDIT: it's the hardest part for me to get over in this early stage of my couponing career -- I just want to put my head through a wall when a clerk refuses to take the coupon for whatever reason, but especially when I'm paying MSRP for something with the coupon, it's like argagaggag!

The Glade deal at CVS last week...
I handed the cashier my coupons and she said I couldn't use them for the spray because the coupon had a picture of a Glade candle on it... I tried explaining that it said "any Glade item" but she wasn't having it.
I went to a different CVS and they took it no problem.

Last Saturday go to local supermarket & get the cashier from hell... it was one of those, "I really don't want this cashier, but every other line has 5 people and her line is empty" things.
Anyway, I had bought two dozen packages of eggs and gave her the Facebook $.55/2 dozen any eggs from the Incredible Egg Org. It beeps (as it always does), cause it's not coded to specific eggs. She looks the coupon over and says, "I can't take this, you didn't buy these." I pull the eggs out of the bag & say, "Yes, I did, they're right here". Her response, "This is for Incredible brand eggs!" Stifling my laughter, I say, "You've never heard of the incredible edible egg? There is no such brand, it's from the Incredible Edible Egg Org"
She finally called over a manager, you says, "Yeah, take it, it's generic to all eggs" as she gives me a look that says, "Did I really hire this person?"

Yesterday at RA, I tried to use the $2 Crest Complete/Oral B complete q on a 2-pack of Oral B Complete. The coupon states, "$2 off one or more of the following products..."
Cashier: This coupon says one or more, so you can't use it on the 2-pack
Me: But the 2-pack is one ore more toothbrush!
Cashier: No, what this means is that you have to get one or more package of single toothbrushes. The 2-pack doesn't count
After about a minute of arguing, she went to check with the manager. She came back, apologized (she said she was tired), and took the coupon. She said she missed the word "one" in the "one or more" and that's why she wasn't taking it.
I don't know what the manager said to her but it must've gone something like this:
"I know we don't hire cashiers for their intelligence, but do you have half a brain? The only way we can't take the coupon is if the customer bought 0 toothbrushes, and he bought 2. Now go back out there and take the stupid coupon!"
Ok, maybe she didn't say that

There seems to be a lot of trouble with the $25 Kroger loads on the Kroger card when you transfer a prescription to their pharmacy. This happened to me this week at two different stores:
-It seems that they can't tap into the money after coupons have been scanned despite seeing the amount available before they started scanning coupons. A supervisor's response to this problem was telling me to pay for my stuff and just try to use the money on the card next time. Yeah, I don't think so. I came here to get my free stuff for transferring a prescription and I'm not paying for it and hoping the card works right next time(which it won't)
-At another Kroger the cashier used the money left on the card towards my total without scanning my coupons and could not scan them after. She told me I didn't need to use coupons because I was getting my stuff for free. No, I'm paying for the stuff with the bonus money loaded onto my card and would like to use my coupons too. A supervisor told her to scan the coupons and give me cash.
The first incident took sooooooooooo long. I came home with a headache. They ended up entering the amount I had left on the card as a coupon.

I was at the laundromat waiting so my boyfriend went to Wendy's and tried to get the "free W burger" for me with the coupon I printed off of a legit coupon site (Bricks and I'm sure some of you got this coupon too). He told me that the cashiers wouldn't take it. The manager was called over and he/she asked him where he got it and my bf said, "My girlfriend got it for me." They immediately looked at him like he was a thief and said it was fake. My bf isn't really the assertive/aggressive type so he left in fear of the Wendy's employees spitting in the burger in revenge if they do decide to honor the coupon if he complains. Wtf. Wendy's was clueless.

A lot of times certain brands do not allow their products to be discounted further and that's why they are excluded.

Yesterday at target in stockton, CA , the checker told me she watches extreme couponing, so she KNOWs they can't take two of the same coupons during a check out.
My favorite was at safeway though, checker said she would get fired if I saved more than 50%. Called corporate on that one, asked them to train their checkers better so they would be more comfortable with coupon usage.

From past experience... Hold one item back (that doesn't have a coupon or grab a small pk of gum). Have the associate scan all of the coupons, then scan the leftover item -- you should now be able to use your RX $s.

Tonight I was told by the Assistant Manager at Rite Aide he could only accept 1 coupon instead of the 8 coupons I presented for 8 of the same item I was purchasing.
His reason was the coupon said "This coupon is not to be doubled or tripled". Sadly we had to explain to him what that meant. After a very long time while he read every single word on the coupon he scanned them and never said another word...Not even thank you.

Just remember that RA's coupon policy is four like coupons per transaction......I have yet to get an excuse from a cashier. They've scrutinized them and I even had one read every word on four separate (but identical) coupons as though they were going to magically change before her eyes. :)

Two days ago I went to target and got in line with a cashier that is great with coupons. At the last second he went on break and they put in an older woman who always has problems with coupons and who I usually avoid like the plague. Anyway, even though she has had me many times in the past, I get the usual. One per purchase means she has to ring them up in a separate transaction. I then had 4 people with me and those coupons that state one per person and no more than 4 in a transaction and that really blew her mind and she told me I could only use one total. I point out the fact that it states 4 in a transaction but she said that is not what they meant. I just canceled the order and rang up in customer service.
Yesterday in family dollar I was buying those scrubbing bubbles. She reads the coupon and sees one per purchase and tells me she will have to ring them up separately also. I told her no that is one per transaction and then she tells me nope she cannot do it as her computer will only take one coupon at a time. What? Well I am like so be it if you want to waste time so she is doing one at a time while I pay using my debit card(I had no cash on me) of .24 lol. Halfway through she is not paying attention and rings up both at a time and lo and behold it works. She kinda looks at the computer like wtf but without missing a beat makes me pay for those 2 and then goes back to ringing them up 1 at a time ago. Unreal.

Unreal.
I don't think the manufacturers realize how much frustration they would save us by changing the wording to "one coupon per item"

My favorite was with Oriental Trading Company when I ordered some items to donate. The items were for a women's conference. Long story short, some of the items arrived moldy. So, Oriental Trading was going to make it right by re-ordering the items, but the items were out of stock and we needed them by Saturday (it's now Wednesday of the week that this incident occurred) so he says can I interest you in anything else. I choose an alternative that was $9.95 vs $11.95 (they had nothing else in the $11.95 price range). He said he couldn't sell me the cheaper item because then he would owe me a coupon and the lowest amount they can send a courtesy coupon for is $5.00. So I found a pack of silly bandz knock offs that I could save for another giveaway that was $2. We can't do that, because then you are getting two items instead of one at our expense. I said but I am exchanging the 250 pens for 500 pencils, so actually I'm getting 500 items at your expense instead of 250. I need a manager to handle this. The manager says, we can't do that, we can issue you a product that is $11.95 or $6.95 and issue you a $5 off coupon. I said okay can you issue me the coupon and then I can apply it to this order, he said yes and e-mailed me the $5 coupon instantly. I then gave him the coupon number to get the $9.95 item, the $2 silly bands knock offs, and an additional $5 item and they were satisfied. I think their courtesy coupons confuse them more than their sales.

I emailed the person in charge of the Association of Coupon Professionals, saying this very thing, and he responded that they're not in charge of what wording the manufacturers use and the discussion went nowhere - basically a bunch of bs. It's like he's aware of the issue and purposely doesn't do anything about it so more coupons could get denied

...or cashiers/managers simply need to be trained better and explained what the word "purchase" means from legal (contractual/tortious) standpoint. the problem is that "purchase" is better than "item" on coupons.
also what do you do about coupons that require more than one item? :dontknow:

I am big and import Big Wig Executive, Entertainer or Politician. So, I email that my wife had problem with the wording. The CEO personally called me to deal with the issue. Plus, my wife and I was flown first class to corporate head quarters to share her experience with the coupon wording on corporate jet. Afterward, we were in conference call with other CEOs in same industry. Each company promise to spend a 1 million dollar each on study on benefits changing the wording to be more Consumer friendly.
....Sarcasm...
Before end of the day, CEO and I play Golf at a 5 -Star Golf Course while wives were in very expensive beauty spa. Lastly, we went to Guillevers Steakhouse for a 7 course meal with the CFO, VP marketing and their spouses. Lastly, CEO wanted to know if I was interested being massaged by Corporate Message specialist, I passed. So CEO, he had 2 Corporate Message Specialist.

Who exactly is going to train a manager of a store about what wording on a coupon means? To an outsider who isn't as familiar with coupons as we are, it seems perfectly reasonable that "one per purchase" would mean "one per transaction"

i think the responsibility falls on the superior to train the subordinate. :D it takes 30 seconds to succinctly explain that "per purchase" = "item purchased" and _ "transaction. though, i've noticed that a few companies are starting to put "per item purchased" or the like on coupons, which is an improvement.

I tried using a Rite Aid video value coupon on a pack of Trident gum. The coupon showed a picture of a pack of gum and underneath it said "Trident gum". The cashier wouldn't accept the coupon because she claimed the item in the picture isn't the item I'm buying and the coupon doesn't say "ANY" Trident gum. I asked her what I was buying (Trident gum) and what the coupon said (Trident gum), but she argued that what I was buying wasn't the pictured item. Trident has about 24 varieties of gum...Rite Aid isn't going to picture all of them. I finally got her to scan it and when the computer accepted it she said "the computer will accept any coupon even if you aren't buying the right item", which isn't true. I bought a wrong variety of Physician's Formula make up and tried using a video value coupon on it, but the computer rejected it.

At Wag, buying 2 Edge Shave Gel, tried to use 2 of the 55c off coupons. Beep, beep beep. After much scrutiny, cashier says that the coupon says valid only shaving "Gel" and I was not buying a "gel". I am not sure exactly what he thought a shaving gel might look like, but it says Shaving Gel right on the can. After more scrutiny and calling out a manager, who was also not going to take the coupon because it was beeping and somehow thinking I was not buying the right item, even though the exact item was pictured on the coupon, it finally occurred to me to ask them to cover up the GS1 and then it scanned fine. No apologies or anything for treating me like a crook and making me wait 15 minutes to buy 2 dang cans of shaving cream.

I was at CVS and I got two boxes of Ailgn. I gave him 2 mq. He told me he could take one. Then I wanted to correct him because he obviously thought one mq per transaction instead of one mq per item. I kept my mouth shut when he said he would ring it up in two transactions. So I thought it will be fine. Then the ECB did not print since it did not keep track fast enough of two transaction, end of both receipts reads 15.99 needs 14.01 to get the rewards. Initially he did not realize until I pointed it out to him. But I am glad that he understood and quickly manually printed the $10. It was a waste of my and his time even though the issued was resolved.

Listen to this illiterate redemption story that was actually in my favor.
I had a qpon for $5 off wyb $15 of Hormel Snack Tray OR Deli purchase & qualifying Beer.
Because of past cashiers I was already prepared to point out the ANY DELI clause on it since I was buying a $7.49 Hormel snack tray + $12 worth of deli items.
The cashier printed out the reciept to find the price of the tray.
I started pointing out the ANY DELI and she seemed to understand. :shake:
(BTW this cashier is about to graduate to be a lawyer at a well know firm here, so I assumed she had good reading comprhension )
She put in the qpon total for the full non-sale price for the Hormel tray at $10.99.
I pointed to qpon where it said $5 off.,
She said Nope it meant it had to start at $5.
OK
So, I made money on that one, & I know not to get that law firm to represent me on ANYTHING!

Strangely enough there is a real reason for that. Someone much wiser than I posted on this here long ago and said the word "purchase" has to be used to that people don't try to use coupons for other things, like returns. I swear. And you know there is some goober out there that would try it. The intention (as much as I hate that word ) is that "purchase" is meant as a verb not a noun.

mr. shuriken:
We talked last Friday regarding the coupon issue you had at our X store. I have checked into this with the store manager and our banking department regarding these coupons. It seems that this coupon could have been printed more clearly. According our coupon clearinghouse agent the intent of the coupon stating one per purchase was intended to be one coupon per transaction. I can arrange for the store to make an exception in this case as this coupon's intent is not as clear as it could have been. If you let me know how many more coupons you have to redeem I will advise the store and they will look after this for you directly without any further inconvenience.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and I look forward to hearing back from you so we may look after this matter for you.
Sincerely,

That's nice. It doesn't really get to the core issue. Cause if another couponer were to come in using those coupons, they may not be as accomodating. Hopefully they'll come to the conclusion that one per purchase does mean one per item for everyone, not just you. Thanks for letting us know!

I had a similar experience at on of my local RAs. The cashier accused me of photocopying the coupons because they were all in black and white. Even after I pointed out that all of the long barcodes were different and the names were different, I got told that she'll "set these aside and talk to my boss." She did take them. Thank heavens that there are four RAs here. I don't think I could deal with that every week.

On the Got2B at Walgreens this week I got told by one cashier that the only way she could take four of them was in two separate transactions. She proceeded to do both transactions. I tried to tell her she could just do it all in one and price adjust the last coup0on, but no, she was very sure her way was the only possible way it would work. Made me laugh...

I had two happen to me this month, one at a walmart and one at Stop & shop. The coupons at both stores scanned but what was funny was the conversations during it.
At the walmart it was just one coupon for $1 off coffee. The cashier couldn't get it to scan at first so she double checked the item and started reading coupon. After a while I asked if anything was wrong(she got too quiet), she looked at me and said "yeah I was just reading the coding at the bottom cause sometimes they screw those things up." I was like :omg:. BTW the coupon did scan eventually without any intervention or pushing through, that store just has a tendency to give hassles with coupons..I like my coffee and they were the only one near that had it in stock.
At the stop & shop I had 9 items and 9 coupons(8 regular & 1 OYNO). This store has a scan it option where you can scan and bag all your stuff before you get to the register. Then you hand over the scan gun, your store card, coupons and then pay.
I hand over the scan gun, my card and then the coupons. As she's scanning the coupons the bagger (an older female) comes over, sees my one prepacked reuseable bag, sees the cashier scanning the coupons and decides to say "You have to be careful with those things, not all coupons are valid in this state." Which is true cause I know the local Shaw's & S&S won't take milk coupons but it was still funny hearing it from the bagger.
