I would like to be able to back up games onto SD chips or USB flash drives or on an external hard drive. It also must have a switch to turn it off. What mod chip would be the best?

Well, it depends. Do you have a D2C or a D2B/D2A wii? If it's a newer Wii, it'll probably be D2C and I think the only chip out for a D2C is the D2CKey. If you have an older Wii, Cyclowiz/Wiikey/Wiinja are all up for grabs (all of those you can install a switch, Cyclowiz you can just press a button on the Wii and it turns off). I personally have a Wiikey in my D2A, but given the lack of updates I'd try something else like Cyclowiz.

Any reason why you want to back up via SD? I used to do that but now I'm use a GDR-8162b reader that is a lot more convenient to do.

As for SD card backups, the SD Gecko with the Wiikey config disc should be able to work with all modchips, so far as I know.

There are a a few modchips for the D2c now. Unless you are EXCELLENT at soldering, dont bother. I have an infectus argon, there is also a d2cpro now...13 wires instead of 30

I only burn backups that I own to disc, not SD,so I cant answer that. Google is your friend ;)

If you're weary of opening up your wii to figure out what drive chip you have, this site (http://wiitracker.nintendo-scene.com/search.php) can provide a pretty good guess. It's been accurate on 4/4 wii's I've tested. As enigmata said, the easiest way to back up games are to try to get a whole of the LG GDR-8162b dvd-rom for your computer. It's one of the few PC drives that are able to read wii disks, though it's no longer produces, so ebay is your best bet. Otherwise, you'll need a mod chip and a gamecube slot to SD adapter (AFAIK, none of the existing modchips are able to dump straight to the Wii SD card slot).

check out the wasabi chip, along with the wii-clip. It's universally compatible as far as I can tell and I've heard good reviews on it. The wii clip lets you "clip" on the mod-chip with minimal soldering. In the case of the wasabi chip, it's only 1 solder point. See http://wii-clip.com/V5_Wasabi.htm. If buying in north america, I recommend foundmy.com - I've bought from them several times w/o any issues.

Anyone know a good program to burn wii games? I've used dvd decrypter in the past for ps2 games but it doesn't seem to decode a lot of games anymore. I'm hoping to find a freeware program. I looked at google and didn't really find much. I appreciate any help. :)

there are 2 big "version" of wii.

D2C models (D2C ; D2C-D1A ; D2C2) is the new one.

older versions (DMS ; D2A ; D2B ; D2B pins cut) like this, and wiikey can only work with the older version. the wiikey here: http://www.volumerate.com/details.vr/sku.60005 is the best clone i found so far, which can performs good and can upgrade. Also this is much cheaper.

How do you know which model you have? I put the serial number in the wii tracker and it said there's a 50% chance that it's a D2C. I'd like to know more than 50% before I buy a mod chip for it.

buy a tri-wing screwdriver, open it up, and look at your drive chip. That'll also show you if the drive legs are cut, which makes it significantly more difficult to mod. You could also buy a wasabi chip, which is compatible with most (if not all) models.

hmm.. would open it up void your warranty? btw, is there a security seal or some shit like that? how does nintendo know you open your Wii?

yes, I'm pretty sure that opening it up would void your warranty. that said, I'm unaware of a security seal of any sorts. The only thing would be to be careful when removing the foot pads covering the screws on the bottom and sides, since any damage to those could indicate that you had opened your console.
