This thread lists the Publix grocery store Mystery Coupon item, updated each week

Scroll down to see each week's item. The latest item will be in post #3 (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?p=10947703&postcount=3) or the Wikipost (post #2 (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?p=10947694&postcount=2#edit10947694)), as well as in the latest posts at the end of this thread (towards bottom of last page).

What is the "Mystery Penny Item"?
One day each week, Publix offers one item for 1¢ when you spend $10 or more (before tax and other coupons).

This is offered on either Wednesday or Thursday -- the same day your local stores' weekly sale cycle starts.

When your stores will be closed that day for a holiday (e.g., Thanksgiving, Christmas), the Mystery Coupon is customarily offered the following day

Where is it offered?
Only at Publix grocery stores in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina. It is currently not available in Florida (and a few south GA stores that are grouped with Publix FL regions).

Where is the coupon?
Beginning January 2010, the Mystery Coupon moved to a tiny display ad in a regular section of your daily newspaper (either Wednesday or Thursday -- the same day your local stores' weekly sale cycle starts). In the Atlanta, it's been in Thursday's AJC, usually on page D-2 (Living section).

Example:
643200 643202
(click thumbnails for larger images)

However, the cashiers may give you the discount without the coupon (you may need to remind them to key in the discount). Some stores will give you a copy if you ask at the Customer Service desk.

Some stores have started requiring you present the coupon. If you forget to bring it, they have usually said you can go ahead and buy the penny item, and show your receipt and the coupon to the CS desk on your next visit to receive a refund.

Previous years

Up until summer 2007 in Atlanta, the coupons appeared within a full- or two-page ad in the Metro section of the Sunday newspaper.

From then up to the end of 2009, the Mystery coupons had been on the front of a 4-page flyer spotlighting that week's BOGO deals (wrapped over the normal 12- or 16-page weekly store flyer, and inserted in the Sunday newspaper). Example:88781 88782
Ordinarily, the over-wrap flyers were not handed out in the stores (or when they were, they did not include the Mystery Coupon — there was a blank spot instead).

Do all stores have the same item?
The Mystery Penny item is typically the same at all participating stores, but it's not uncommon for some stores to have a completely different item. Stores also sometimes switch to a different item over the course of the sale day — either a similar item from a different brand, or something entirely different. "Your mileage may vary" :)

If the store you visit does have something different, check your receipt — it will usually still show the credit as the intended item. For example, if most stores had salad dressing but yours had soda, the receipt will still list the coupon credit as "salad dressing" for an amount 1¢ less than the price of the soda.

On this receipt, the "designated item" was bleach, but the store substituted popcorn:
88788

Fine Print: Items which don't count towards your $10 total: alcohol products, money orders, postage stamps, gift cards, prescriptions Limit one deal per coupon per customer

If you find out what a new week's Mystery Penny Coupon item is before anyone else has reported it in this thread, post a reply (to bump the thread) and then add it to the Wiki here. Please be sure to say the city where you found it.

If your store has a different item than what other people have reported, please check your receipt — when a store makes a substitution, the coupon credit usually still shows up as the "intended" item. Feel free to mention that in a follow-up post, but it's probably better to not list them all here in the Wiki.

The only thing I can think is that it might not be in my sale paper? I live in GA, but the closest large city is in FL (Jacksonville) so maybe our sale papers come from there.

Keep in mind — the Mystery Coupon doesn't appear in the normal sale flyer itself. Not all cities may get the extra 4-page wrap like Atlanta does — in your area, the coupon may only be in a full-page ad in your local paper, or perhaps not advertised at all (but then, what would be the point?).

On another coupons forum I read a post saying it's not offered in every store in GA or TN.

But next time you're in your store, try asking someone at the CS desk and/or the manager.

Over in the Publix Deals thread, crazy4vs had e-mailed Publix asking why it wasn't offered in Florida, and got a return phone call from someone in corporate HQ who said 'he would see what he could do to have it added to the Florida stores.'

So if your store doesn't offer it, let them know you'd really like to see it.

One of the things I hope this thread will do is show where the MC currently is and isn't offered, and whether each week's intended item really is the same in all stores. So please let us know.

The Penny Item for April 20-21 is indeed Publix spring water, 6-pack 1/2-liter bottles.

In the Atlanta paper, the Mystery Coupon is on the front of a 4-page cover — "Stock Up and Save" (this week's BOGO deals) — wrapped over the current 16-page sale flyer.

If your store has something different, let us know (and say your city and whether your receipt still shows the credit as "Publix water").

There is another Mystery Coupon on the cover of a separate 8–page flyer that lists some Publix brand items. The back cover advertises this week's Store Brand Challenge (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?p=11594585&postcount=359).

Many areas have a new $5 off $35 (or $40) coupon on page 1 of the flyer, good until the end of this sale week (June 24 or 25). Publix's web site had a printable version briefly, but that has been taken down and corporate advised all stores to not accept printed versions.

Coupons clipped from the actual flyer are still accepted, but probably only in the area where that flyer was distributed (i.e., don't try to use a coupon from a Georgia flyer in Florida).

YMMV. I have had some cashiers enter in the lookup code immediately after scanning the item without checking to see if I handed them the coupon. We also receive the Publix ad with the "Double up" overwrap/Penny item coupon late Saturday nights as there are pink newspaper bags called "yes!" (Your Essential Shopper) that they throw on the driveways in our neighborhood. Some of our neighbors give us their copies. They usually contain the Publix ad, the coupons (but never the Red Plums), and some other stores ads. I have been buying the Tennessean at Walgreens recently as there has been a 99c promo all summer on both the Tennessean and the DNJ -- get the Tennessean as the DNJ does not have all of the coupons.

I agree. YMMV. I get the newspaper but somehow always forget to clip the Mystery Item Coupon. But incase I do a Publix run that weekend, always tell the cashier I forgot it at home and he/she usually just takes another one given by a previous customer and uses the code off that one. That's very interesting. They've placed the coupon on the back page an extra "bonus" page 17 (with the "essentials" items). I wonder if that means they're going to do away with the extra 4-page "overwrap" flyer?

We'll have to wait until Sunday to see whether they'll accept it (as always, it's only valid on Sunday and Monday), but since it's on their web site I don't see how they can decline it.
Good ... at participating Publix stores in GA, AL, SC and TN on January 18 & 19, 2009 only ...
so still no joy for Florida yet.

ADDED: The insert I received in today's (Thursday's) newspaper has a completely different page 16 — more regular grocery items (not essentials), and no Mystery Coupon. {scratch that — page 16 online is same as printed} The MC and essentials are on an online-only "page 17."

ADDED 2: Didn't notice before, but the "page 17" says "Stock Up and Save" at the top. That page turned out being the same as the cover of the Sunday 4-page overwrap.

Me too. A question, does your total have to be > $10 before adding the value of the 1 cent item or after that?
Technically, you need $10 of other groceries. But that can be before any mfr coupons (since those are essentially just an alternate form of payment for part of your bill).

I've had cashiers that would deduct the penny item discount as long as my total of other items was reasonably close to $10. A time or two, the price of the penny item itself was what pushed my total just over $10.

Really depends on your cashier. I've heard there are a few that scrutinize every coupon, but most just want to make the customer happy.

...
Very interesting. But if you start at specials.publix.com and try to choose that store and navigate to the "bonus" page, the coupon is not there.

Even during the previous weeks when the coupon was visible on the online "bonus" page, some stores refused to accept the printable version — they'd only take the newsprint one (from the Sunday paper or stack in the carousel). So I don't know how well this one will fly. YMMV.

Many stores still don't even require the coupon. The ones that are sticky about needing one will probably also balk at a printable one.

BTW, I stopped by two more stores during my travels. One offered all three flavors of the sandwich cookies (chocolate, vanilla, and duplex). The other store only offered chocolate.

Though the store was suspicious of the printed coupon when I presented it (with people exchanging nasty looks :P ), they took it without arguing. I guess this is because not many people print it off the website and still wait for the paper to carry it.

My store in Midtown ATL is adamant about requiring coupons and won't give the item without it.

As always, YMMV. Look for the "Mystery Coupon" sign or display at your store, or ask any employee.

In the 4/12 (Sunday) Atlanta newspaper, the Mystery Coupon was on the front of this week's 12-page flyer/insert (no 4-page overwrap flyer this time).

Their online ad specials.publix.com (http://specials.publix.com/) has the "bonus" page 13 listing their "essentials" items.

Their home page and online ad do not yet mention the new Store Brand Challenge items. Stay tuned.

See post #1 (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=795589) here for Mystery Coupon FAQs.

Note that this week's sale flyer runs from Monday, April 13 through April 21 or 22 (started an extra day or two early due to the Easter holiday).

Does anyone know a way to get out of paying so much sales tax ?

On the pizza, I paid sales tax on $4.28 in phantom sales. Thats 34 cents.

It shouldnt be rung up that way because only the government wins. Not publix and not the customer.

My store never makes me bring the coupon, I just ask "can I get this for a penny" and they always say yes.

Please double-check your receipt as on mine, it did take the tax off.

My receipt shows it as:
PUBLIX PEPP PIZZA 4.69 t F
PL PIZZA MYSTY CPN -4.68 t F

(t=Taxable F = Food Stamp eligible)

If your receipt does not have the "t" next to the coupon item's price, then they did not offset the tax from the pizza purchase and I would question it with the store.

You are absolutely right !

I just checked my receipt and its just like you say.

It was even more obvious when the manufacters coupons I used did NOT have the t beside them. So it was correct. I paid tax on what I was supposed to.

And the price was $4.69.

I may go back and get another one. I would never pay full price for them. In fact, the last time I got one free and I had been hoping they would run them buy one get one free but they never do.

Last week, my store went from hot dogs one day to salad dressing the next because they were flat out of publix hot dogs.

What state are you in? Here in Atlanta, the stores charge sales tax only on the penny.

Manufacturers' coupons are treated like an alternate form of "cash," so they still charge sales tax on the full price of the item.

On the Penny item (and other Publix coupons), they effectively reduce the price of the item before tax. Technically, they ring up the full price, then show a separate credit for all but 1¢. The sales tax is reduced by the corresponding amount.

Since we pay no state sales tax on food here, an odd thing happens when a store substitutes a non-food item: They'll charge the full amount for the item (e.g., $4), then deduct all but 1 cent (e.g., $3.99 coupon credit), but since the coupon was programmed for a food item, the register reduces the tax by just the local county/city rate (for me, 2% instead of the full 6%). So I end up paying the 4% state portion on the $4.

Per a full page ad in the 12-27-09 AJC (page A9):
Now every Thursday will bring a pleasant surprise. Everyone loves the Publix Mystery Coupon, because it gets you a valuable item for just 1 cent at your neighborhood Publix. Beginning Thursday, January 7, you'll find the coupon in this newspaper instead of in the Publix ad. Be sure to find it and cut it out so you can get your pleasant surprise---for only a penny.

This is the ad in total. No mention of what days it will be valid on.

I talked with my favorite Customer Service Rep tonight at Publix. In Northern Alabama it will be Wednesday, but the Q will be in the Wednesday newspaper and not in the ad. She said that it is to coincide with rolling out Senior Day on Wednesday here. When I told her that no one wants to BUY a Wednesday paper, she whispered that this store doesn't require the Q (unlike others in the area).

The Mystery Coupon will be valid on the same day your store's weekly sale cycle starts (either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on region).

In today's Atlanta newspaper, the Mystery Coupon is on page D2 (Living section). It's just the coupon, with no surrounding Publix ad. I'll add a scan to post #1 soon. This time, the coupon is on the back side of a picture on page 1, so you won't be clipping out part of an article (as happened last week :rolleye:).

 It's been awhile since I've seen a mystery coupon in a publix flyer, I get the Sunday AJC delivered & it's not in the weekly ad, I read the wiki, so I now know that it is no longer in the Sunday AJC. But on Thursday, I wanted to get the greenwise tp & went to get the Thursday AJC at the store, did a quick look before buying to make sure the Mystery Q was on front of the flyer - and it was not, I did not look thru the entire ad, as the store clerk was looking at me like 'are you going to buy the paper'.

sorry for the long post, my question is: Which paper is the Mystery Q in? and on what day? and is it on the front page like it used to be? Thanks for the help.

In the AJC, it is usually on page 2 of the Living Section (comics, Dear Abby).

Since the day part of your question wasn't answered, I think it is the whatever the first day of your sale is. If your store sales run Wed-Tues, then the Q is in the Wed paper. If your store sales run Thurs-Wed, then the Q is in the Thurs paper.

My store in Meridianville ran out of chips, so they substituted 64 oz Juicy Juice 100% Juice (Apple or Grape). Something the SIL would rather have anyway.

This is the first time since the Penny Item moved to Wednesday that I've gotten the it. Qs that expired yesterday (with a sale that started yesterday) drew me back in to the store.

Hope that helps all!
