This has been mentioned in several threads, but I thought a specific thread about it was warranted.
I have an 80gb PS3 (and an xbox 360 fwiw). It takes me somewhere around 3 hrs to download ONE DEMO from the PS store. That is with a wired connection (wireless is slower). Now before you try and blame my connection I have the 360 and several computers and tivos hooked up the exact same way. They download things super fast (like you would expect from a cable modem). I have put the PS3 as DMZ in case some ports were getting blocked and that didn't help. What gives?
Some people say downloads take 10 minutes and they are either lying or the PS store hates me....
DO NOT TURN THIS INTO A BASH FEST PLEASE. Who else is experiencing this and does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on things I could try?

It's never took me more than 30 min to dl anything off of PSN. Which demo was it? I'll try it and let you know how long it took me.

My download speeds are between 8-10min for demos on my PS3. It's wired but not in a DMZ. Try visiting this thread: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=39734&t=731892
I've never tried it b/c I haven't had any problems, but it may help.

It NEVER takes hours for stuff to download for me. I have no idea why it would but demos and updates take minutes not hours.
Does it take forever to update your firmware too? Updating to 2.30 took 10 minutes from start to finish (downloading, installing and everything).
Edit: I made sure to watch the clock when I updated my firmware because of the other thread on download speeds. So I know that 10 minute thing is accurate. :D

Hmm I didn't time my update as I was doing other things... I would guess around 20-30minutes total.

Doubt it matters which demo.. R & C, Uncharted, and DMC4 total took around 9 hrs (overnight).
firmware updates and demo downloads take quite a while for me too. I think the latest firmware took me 30-40 minutes to download and GT HD concept took about 1.5 hours to download over my WIFI. I know my internet connection is not the greatest but I do average around 100-200kbytes (thats about 1Mbit) while downloading stuff on my PC.

Download speeds will vary and dependent on multiple factors:
* QoS of your own internet provider
* PSN Load
* Wireless connection quality (if you are wireless)
* Planetary alignment
there have been times when my downloads come down blazingly fast. other times they are pretty slow. I am on 10mbit cable.

I've noticed a lot of posts recently too. I beleive at one point Eddie asked for proof, so I'm going to attempt to document this soon by "timestamping" the downloads with photos taken of my entertainment center during a large file download. The comcast cable box allows me to do this since the time is set automatically by the network, and I don't know of a way to manually adjust the time on it. So it's as tamper proof as I can imagine without using a camcorder, which I don't have.
Two nights ago (4/15) I downloaded the expansion pack for super stardust HD (153 MB) in just under 6 mins - I timed this using my watch with chrono. This is with a wireless connection. While not blazingly fast, it still works out to be 425 kBps or 3.4 Mbps. Certainly not dog slow as so many are purporting - I'm pretty happy when I can get those kinds of rates out of my torrents. Also keep in mind that this occurred during prime time (about 7pm EDT) on the day of a major firmware (2.30) and content release. I plan to do my tests in one week, after which time I figure most of the heavy traffic should have died down. I'll post photos when I get results.

No.. Install time on demos is miniscule compared to DL times for me. Installs in minutes.

My girlfriends brother has the same problem, his downloads take hours... Thought it may be his connection, but he brought it over the other day and it was still taking forever.
hope you find something OP. Slow downloads are the worst..

Try changing your network settings on the PS3 for the wired connection:
- In the wired network settings, choose manual instead of auto (you can keep the IP address in auto mode, that's fine). I forget exactly how the options are laid out and in what order, but what you are looking for is the link/duplex mode. Instead of the default auto-negotiate, choose 100Mb/Full Duplex (or if you have gigabit, 1000Mb/Full Duplex). Sometimes, certain networking equipment (switches, NICs) do not auto-negotiate this properly, and latency can be caused by this feature not locking onto the proper speed and/or duplex (it can flip back and forth a lot). At work, it's a standard procedure for us to set all NICs on workstations/servers this way, and it has been proven to help.
One thing I can guarantee is it's not the PSN servers. Enough of us get blazing speed from them to confirm it. Of course, your ISP and physical location can have an effect (obviously DSL would be slower), but if you know you have a fast connection then it's probably going to be the above.
Also, as far as DMZ goes, this should no longer be necessary as long as your router has a UPNP mode and it is enabled, along with UPNP being enabled on the PS3. This will allow software to dynamically open/close ports as needed, eliminating the issues with your firewall.

This is the last time I will bring this up here so hopefully someone will respond. I have tried everything that I can think of and nothing worked to speed up my downloads. I even resorted to a direct connection to my modem and it was still slow.
Do I have any options as far as warranty support with Sony? If I call them will they even give a crap? I'm not even sure if I could play an online game with the slow speeds I'm getting.
I have this problem too, and mine works perfectly fine when online gaming (games I've tested include Resistance, Warhawk, Team Fortress, Calling all Cars, Call of Duty IV). Warranty support will depend on when you purchased yours. Mine is out of warranty, so I'm not going to bother calling them. I might get a second PS3 anyway, or, since I have a 60GB, I might just sell it and get an 80GB, or both.
Hey, Phreaker, are there gambling ties with Vujacic or does he just not have any class? What's up with that unnecessary three-pointer in the final seconds last night? The line was 7-1/2 (Lakers favored, of course). The score differential went from 5 to 8 in the last second, all because of Vujacic, when the Spurs had already conceded.

my 60gb ps3 has always been good for me when downloading and installing, but I just brought it to my work (where i can sit for 2 hours without any kind of business at all), and downloading and installing the demos seemed to just drop off. It took about an hour to download the 2nd half of the bourne demo and about 15 minutes to install it. i thought it had somethign to do with the router (when i connected, it said certain features may not be available), but installing the game also took a long time... any idea of what could be the problem?
edit: i have filled up my HD a few times, and i think i currently have about 5 gb free. could this possibly be part of the reason it is slowing down (maybe it could be related to something like it needs to be defragmented?)

Oh god, I didn't know that shot covered the spread. That's funny. But that's always a cheesy move regardless.

It must be a connection thing. I had serious issues trying to setup the wifi connection at my FIL's house on the PS3, even though he has the same router / cable modem / service as I have. Who knows.

I don't think it could be a "connection thing" with me. If you hook it up directly to your modem there should be no settings to tweak, correct? My Comcast connection is super fast with computers and my 360. On the order of 10Mb/s.
my download speed is also atrocious. My internet speed is not blazing fast but I can download around 300 kilobytes/s or 2.4Mb/s on my computers (wired desktop and wireless laptop), but like I said before it took me 30-40 min to download the latest update (that GTA4 one,, supposedly 25MB)

I have the 60gb PS3 and on a wireless connection, and takes me about 20 minutes for download and install. I've downloaded about 10-12 demos since I had it and never took me hours to download anything, demos or upgrades.

I've downloaded just about every demo they have put out, and the last two i downloaded were the only ones that seemed to take forever. it was more than likely just the connection, but like others have said, my laptop shows download speeds of up to 3.5 mb/s or whatever it is (cable internet), so i dunno. we will see what happens when i downlaod the next demo

I posted this in another thread but yeah my 60gb ps3 running linux connects at like 2642.5 kbps wireless to the internet and my download speeds off of PSN are always pretty fast......

and my wireless router is in another room.....so i dont think there is any hardware problems with the 60gb wifi......

I've been downloading fine from PSN store on everything except the Haze demo...but i heard it sucked so I'm glad it never finished

Haze demo took me about an hour or so. PSN always seem to have slow downloads for me,hard wired or wireless. I have Road Runner and download at 6.8MB+ consistantly. I just put it off as PSN servers.
