So you bought a drumset cuz u like a video game that much?

Kinda waste of money eh?

Yeah I know.. something that will have a lasting effect IRL is a waste when I could be spending that money on video games that no one will want to play in 5 years...

Good point.

Umm not really. I play real drum set and rock band definitely would help people get started at playing the real thing. Heck it has made me get a lot better at the real thing. And buying a drum set isn't a waste of money since it is a really handy skill to have. So why don't you stop trolling these threads?

And to the OP do you think rock band helped you gain the basic skills needed to play drum set? And of course, are you any good?

so much hatred, who cares if rock band made him buy a drumset, pretty much more power to him to wanting to actually learn how to play real music on it

Cool man! I just wish the RB guitar was as helpful as teaching me how to play my real fender stratocaster, which I suck at.

Nice. I want an electronic kit since I live in an apartment, but they're kind of pricey. I think I could get decently good in a few months.

If it's just to look at, sure. But people seem to be missing (and I know you've excused yourself, Ice, but others do this too) the fact that Rock Band is getting kids and adults interested in playing real instruments, which is totally awesome.

A drum set is a big investment for a game to be able to move you that much. I won't lie, I'm dying to get to a music store so I can start banging out some Metallica on a real drum set to see what it sounds like in person. Congrats on the purchase, OP! :)

My dad has a kit, so I've played like.. 5-8 times in my life before...

Starting out, I sucked. It's hard going from seeing everything you need to hit on 4 pads to having to listen for what to hit on 4 drums + 4 cymbals!! Also, the CD player I have sucks, so it's REALLY hard to pick out the drum parts.

I will say though that RB has definitely introduced me to a lot of rudimentary rhythms, sets, rolls, etc. It's definitely helped me with the bass pedal and the different rhythms I can do with that. I'd say my investment in RB is EASILY worth what I would have paid in lessons and the return is LOT greater than what those lessons would have given me.

Also.... there's something that's just farking awesome about crashing a cymbal as loud as you want to.

I have actually played this (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Simmons-SD7K-Electronic-Drum-Set-104378245-i1372077.gc) one. It sounds and feels really good. You can even upgrade the heads to mesh for a quieter sound.

A emoticon or something would have helped in the misunderstanding.

My dad had a yahama electric set that was pretty nice. I think it was over a grand though... don't know how much other sets go for because quite frankly, if I wanted to play on rubber pads I'd play Rock Band!! lol.

And Ice wasn't kidding.. he just realized he looked like a tool so he did some damage control :P. The "kind of a waste of money eh" gives it away.

The only problem is do you know that you are using the correct techniques concerning things like grip and bass pedal technique. If I started real drums I would at least want a little bit of guidance before I start learning everything with the incorrect technique. Online training videos can be helpful, but only to an extent IMO. Also do like that other guy on youtube and record yourself playing to real kit to the note charts in practice mode.

That is totally sweet that Rock Band inspired you to buy a drum kit. I play drums also, and Rock Band has been a great practice tool. While it doesn't match the feel of a real drum kit, there are a lot of techniques that translate between the two (stick techniques, bass drum patterns, time keeping, etc). Plus it's fun and not as loud as acoustic drums so I'm able to play RB late at night.

If you haven't already, you should check out the education section at vicfirth.com (http://www.vicfirth.com/education/index.html). They've got a lot of videos on rudiments and such there. It's not quite the same as having an instructor to make sure you're doing things right, but it's a good start.

Good luck,and have fun!!

I appreciate the link.

I was going to start looking up tutorials, but I've been having too much fun on my new set first lol. I'm on a big Boston kick right now. They have some really fun songs to play.

Flash, I have no intention of blowing $1.5K on a drum kit that I just bang on w/no direction at all. Point is, I like the rhythm and feel of drums, and I'm going to get better at it (not going to try, I just am). I realize that I might be doing some things wrong, but I've also been checking out a lot of drumming videos online and paying attention to how they perform different sections.

I realize your concern, but trust me, I'm not just going to waste money on drums w/out learning them :)

Beginner's sets are often a waste of money. If you stick with it, you'll eventually want to upgrade. If you decide it's not for you, the resell value is really bad. A better instrument is gonna sound and play better also. A bad sounding kit can often be discouraging to a new player. TC, I think you made a good choice. Pro-M's are totally gigable if you ever start/join a band. I'd think about a possible cymbal upgrade somewhere down the line if you continue playing.

Absolutely. I have this inherent problem where I can't buy crap. I just can't force myself to do it. That's why slickdeals is so important to me lol! I'm one of those people who usually researches for months before I buy something, because I don't want to "get a good deal" for a couple hundred dollars.... and then realize I wasted a couple hundred dollars because I want better quality than what I got.

And yeah ken, cymbals would probably be the first upgrade (either that or a double bass). Though I will say that I'm very pleased w/them for the time being. Not too excited about the crash/ride, but it's not bad either.

For my band tour it was "I think I'm Paranoid" and "Say it ain't so".... over... and over.... and over... and over...

Lol.. I haven't even thought about it yet, but I bet I could play the hell out of those two songs on my new drums! I think I'm going to make an RB track list to play to!

I use new beats and a sweet ride too, but I was thinking about getting a new ride. I'm using a K med-thin crash along with those.

You must master all Rush songs or it is all a complete waste of time.

OK, just kidding. But imagine if you could do this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=5WoQEt_4l5s

Neal Peart also has a DVD called "Anatomy of a Drum Solo" that's pretty interesting and informative.

Not bad for just 2 weeks. I also applaud you for having the courage to share a video of yourself so soon (not intended to be a comment on your playing or anything, more on my own reluctance to play in front of anyone until I had been playing for about a year).

I know you're aware of the problem, as you mentioned it in the summary on the vid, but you really should do yourself a favor and learn to tune your drums. With a good set of heads, that kit, properly tuned, should sound awesome.

You may have seen this already, but I found this to be extremely helpful when learning to tune drums: The Drum Tuning Bible (http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/)

Couple updates:
Yeah, I started with Sabian B8's too then updgraded to Zidjian new beat hi-hats, sweet ride, z custom crash, and a custom crash. Looking to add a splash and china to my kit now

Funny... because the first two things I've been wanting to replace are the hats and ride. It's hard though, because the music stores around here don't have much, and I'm not going to buy something I haven't heard in person.

Oh, and before you say that Tommy Lee and Travis Barker are drummers, well, I have an answer for you...:

Yeah... some people have said I look like Travis Barker (yeeeaars before this drum interest of mine). I don't see it:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bd/TravisBarker.jpg
http://www.phroztnet.org/me/101006_500.jpg

And I *KNOW* my gf doesn't look like his (ex) wife...LOL.

As for drumming, I really haven't had much time. My basement flooded TWICE, so I've been moving the drums around quite a bit. Not to mention, I've had a big project at work for a long time now, a side development project, and my schedule is as follows:
Mon: Kid
Tues: Poker
Wed: Kid + girl
Thurs: Pool
Fri: open ever other weekend
Sat: open every other weekend
Sun: open every other weekend, but pool every weekend.

So yeah... when I *DO* have time to do stuff, I spend that taking care of the house/bills/side job/etc lol.

But here's the latest thing I'm looking into: http://www.learnandmasterdrums.com/
Going to get that for christmas. Hopefully I'll be able to get a vid of something up before too long though. I'm going to try to start learning Bad Religion and Pennywise songs... but I have to make sure my damn basement will stay dry long enough!!!
