New tracks, new racers (including Miis), new rides and 12-player racing via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection makes for the ultimate Mario racing experience!
Controls: Mario Kart Wii is compatible with four different control schemes, so players can customize how they want to play.
90586
* Wii Remote Controller (with or without Wii Wheel): Steer by tilting the Wii Remote left and right. Or snap the Wii Remote into the Wii Wheel to transform it into a steering wheel for an intuitive, motion-based control scheme.
90587
* Nunchuk Controller: Steer with the Control Stick on the Nunchuk and use the Wii Remote to accelerate, perform tricks and drift.
90588
* Classic Controller: Mario Kart veterans can let their thumbs do the driving with the Classic Controller. However, players cannot perform certain moves with this control scheme.
90589
* Nintendo GameCube™ Controller: Experienced Mario Kart fans may also enjoy this familiar scheme, although some maneuvers cannot be performed.

Mario Kart Wii Battle Mode will have racers going at it online with up to 12-players hitting it out in the classic Balloon Fight and the all new Coin Runners.
Players can compete with up to three friends in their living room. Or challenge up to 11 opponents via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in the biggest Mario Kart race yet. All tracks and modes of play are available via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and players can visit the Mario Kart Channel to compete in tournaments, check rankings, see when their friends are playing and download ghost data.
In Mario Kart Wii you can go online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection by yourself or together with a friend playing on the same Wii console, and let the games begin! You can directly jump into online races with random players Worldwide, or opt for Continental if you prefer a challenge closer to home.
90591
Then you will be placed in a new group of people looking for a match, or you will join an existing group. When the latter happens you will become a spectator of that group’s race currently in progress, as you wait for your turn to hit the track. With up to 12 players being able to battle or race on the circuits of the Mushroom Kingdom simultaneously, Mario Kart Wii is set to provide the biggest challenge in the series to date!
After swapping Friend Codes with other players, you will also be able to see how many of your mates are online, and choose to Create a Room or select Join Friend to gather in a room with your friends before you start your engines.
Q: How can I add friends to my Friend Roster?
A: To add a friend to your Friend Roster : you first need to register their Friend Code. If you and a friend both register each other’s Friend Code you will become Friends in Mario Kart Wii and will be able to play the game together.
Also, when you join a friend's room, if there are any players in the room who are not in your Friend Roster, the Add Friends option will be displayed. Select Add Friends and press the A Button to add a player to your Friend Roster. If they add you to their Friend Roster as well, you will become Friends instantly without having to manually exchange Friend Codes.
Q: How many Friend Codes can I register on my Friend Roster?
A: You can register 30 Friend Codes.
Q: How do online ratings work?
A: Your rating starts at 5,000 and rises or falls when you win or lose in Worldwide or Continental races and battles (games with Friends don't affect your rating). Your rating is separated into a Race Rating for VS Race Mode and a Battle Rating for Battle Mode. Each rating is only affected by wins and losses in its own mode. The ratings are updated according to the final standings of each race.
Your rating determines the players you will race against in Worldwide and Continental matches. Only players with ratings similar to yours will be matched with you.
There are two options for races and battles over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection: up to 12 people via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection or up to 10 people via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection with two people playing locally.
90592
Once inside a room, the globe familiar from the Forecast Channel will highlight the location of all players present. This is where you can text chat with your friends by making a selection from dozens of predefined messages, letting you suggest exactly which kind of race you want to play: from Battle to Grand Prix, and from Team play to your circuit of choice. The Host then decides the race settings, but the track selection is based on the votes of all players combined.
Mario Kart Wii also allows you to install the Mario Kart Channel on your Wii console. This Channel lets you check up on a host of options without the need of inserting the Mario Kart Wii disc into your system.
90593
The Ranking option lets you see your statistics for each track and compare your results to those of your Friends and other players worldwide, represented by their Miis. You’ll have the option of racing against the Ghosts of the best players, or improving your results gradually by taking on the Ghosts of rivals whose times are only slightly better than yours. Players can choose whether they want to share their Time Trial Ghosts with the rest of the world, allowing you to match your skills against the cream of the crop whenever you want.
Another all-new feature of this Channel are the Competitions, where Nintendo will on a regular basis invite players to speedy challenges similar to the Missions of Mario Kart DS. The Channel also allows you to check your ranking in running Competitions as well as Time Trials. You can also go here to register Friends and see if any of them are currently online.

The definitive Mario Kart Wii controller showdown
here are five ways to handle your racer in Mario Kart Wii: Wii Remote solo, Wii Remote embedded in Wii Wheel, Wii Remote with Nunchuk, Classic Controller, and GameCube controller. But, removing all other variables, which control method is the best? Are there really limitations to not using the Wii Wheel? We decided to pull out the ever-trusty "scientific method" and determine, once and for all, the best kart controller.
The Setup
To isolate the control scheme variable, we used a controlled setting. Given the stability of the control scheme, we stuck as close as we could to the following strategy:
* Mario using Standard Kart M or Standard Bike B, Manual Power Slides
* Solo Time Trial on Luigi Circuit
* First curve must be normal turn
* Power sliding all the way through second curve (until orange if possible)
* At next straightway, use a boost mushroom at second set of adjacent pipes, go off the course and over the ramp, and do a trick mid-air
* Power sliding through final curve, avoiding boosters (until orange if possible)
* (Bike only) Performing a wheelie from end of curve until crossing finish line
We ran three trials with each control scheme and each bike (that's 3 x 5 x 2 = 30 separate trials), recording the best lap and best time for each.
The Results
Kart Bike
Best Time Best Lap Best Time Best Lap
GCN Controller 1.29.169 29.14 1.31.405 29.69
Classic Controller 1.30.093 29.343 1.31.889 29.874
Wii Remote 1.35.31 30.659 1.36.774 30.932
Wii Wheel 1.32.799 29.706 1.34.247 31.060
Nunchuk 1.30.070 29.499 1.30.481 29.398
Other Thoughts
* Double Dash veterans beware! The control scheme using the GameCube controller is very different.
* When used alone, the Wii Remote is incredibly unstable. We had a difficult time staying on course, never mind managing to execute a power slide. Mid-air tricks took noticeably more effort than simply pressing a button.
* The Wii Wheel was a lot more accurate than we expected. The added weight helped counteract much of the instability we experienced while using the Wii Remote on its own.
* Performing tricks on the GCN controller or Classic Controller, via the D-pad, feels awkward. We're not fond of removing our thumb from the joystick, only to dart back to it when we need to turn. (But such is the cost of showing off.)
* We never want to play Luigi Circuit again. Ever.
* Mario is setting a very bad example for the children by not wearing a helmet while riding on a motorcycle. You'd think all those smash attacks to the head would've knocked some sense into him.
Conclusions
We guessed beforehand that the GameCube Controller would dominate in every category, so it was somewhat unexpected when the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination fared so well, especially when using a bike. Not surprisingly, the Classic Controller had almost the exact same times as the GCN controller.
We've also come to understand why Nintendo is pushing the Wii Wheel so vigorously -- without it, the Wii Remote option is just dreadful. If you're worried about precision, we'd suggest a more traditional style (GCN controller or Classic Con). If you're looking for fun, take the Wii Wheel for a spin. Our best all-around controller scheme is actually the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combo. But seriously, no matter what your choice becomes, avoid the Wii Remote solo option at all times!

Mario Kart for SNES was one of my favorite games. I'm wondering how this is going to turn out. I'll probably wait for some reviews before I buy. I've already make the mistake with Lair assassin's creed, and devil may cry 4 =/
Any word on TRU? They usually have a really nice sale on big releases.

Not outstanding reviews so far. It sounds like a solid game that won't disappoint but maybe won't wow as much as it could have. I'm still excited for it.

Does the wheel actually do anything other than change the form factor? It's just a piece of plastic right? No electronics?
I'm thinking it might be just as easy to hold the wiimote sideways and drive that way but I guess "wheel" see.

Did you inadvertently check the "rush order" box that adds $2.99 to the order?
I'd talk to Newegg cust. svc. they're usually good about fixing things for customers. Or they have been for me, anyway.

I picked this up at midnite at Gamestop (no preorder). Played until 2 am, and knocked out the 50cc cup this morning. My wife took over since then.
The racing isn't as good as N64 (best version IMO) but it is a fun play.

I got mine at TRU (I exchanged from the buy one get $20 off sale back in march).
This game stinks. It is not fun to play. The "kart" genre began and ends apparently with Mario Kart.
If you have not bought it, steer clear. It stinks. The "different" vehicles are stupid. The courses crap (half of them are "classics"--to use that term loosely) and the game play doth blows (incredibly frustrating as the game is made for childrens. Close game is always on. You get help when you are losing and the game punishes you when you are winning.)
Not fun. I do not see 8.5 (as IGN says). Maybe 3.5. If this was not "Mario Kart" it would get a horrible rating.
I am going to play this game for exactly two days. 'Cause then GTAIV is out and this rubbish can find its way to the shelf or floor or wherever.

How did I guess you were going to post this quality review? I think I'm going to drop out of school and become a psychic.
OOC, if you hate it so much, why are you going to play it for two days? Seems dumb to me. "Waiter...this meal is atrocious! But please don't take it away. I'm gonna keep eating it until I feel like dessert."

oh I forgot. Everything on the Nintendo is amazing.
Yeah.
Online is decent because everyone sucks. I destroy the noobs online. Yet it is still not fun. There is no sense of speed or excitement. It is slow and stupid.
The thing is that you know this game stinks. You just will not admit it.

I don't own it. It may (though I doubt it, even tho double dash was just alright). I'm just not at all surprised that you posted that review. And that you claim to destroy n00bs online. Should we make a poll to see if anyone else was surprised? I'll have to say, I was a bit shocked you didn't also say "So overrated -- all you do is hold down A and I beat the comps no problem."

I'd recommend renting it first. It's probably pretty good. jr_ is kinda infamous for his views on top-tier Wii titles. Like his claim that Smash Bros is a terrible game with no skill involved. Other reviewers have given it rather good marks.
Oh -- and if you find it for 25, post! That's front page material :)

If you all like Mario Kart 64 then youll like this as well... plus the wheel really does add to the interaction with the game i think its really fun I had company over last night and the game was a big hit with everyone.... 2 player vs mode is aweseome.... had people that usually dont even play video games playing last night and doing well and wanting to play as many times as they could....The game is worth it if you buy it just to play by yourselves but especially if you play with others wether its with your girl or a party of people..... i havent tried the online yet...I think ill try right now... :)

Not quite ready to spend $300+ just to play one game....haven't seen anything else other than maybe zelda that interest me. But with the stimulus check coming soon....

Long time Mario Kart fan (um, avatar), I picked up the Wii version today and it's fun as hell. Even the Wii wheel is pretty fun and I though it would be a gimmick.
A worthy sequel and the gameplay is just as frenzied as ever. Shame they lost the double dash style co-op which I liked b/c I could play that way with the kids. On the other hand, they're old enough to play single by themselves and there's always battle mode...

I for one, cannot stand the wheel. Maybe it's just me, but the Wiimote+ nunchuck works about a hundred times better. I just can't get any kind of serious control with it, it just seems to give out on me every now and them, and totally borks the race.

i agree w/ your statements regarding the wheel. i started using my GC controller and ripped it up.
i also must second the statement made regarding on line play, VERY smooth. i too was impressed. one thing i noticed was that some Mii's had a wheel icon over top of them while others didnt. does that indicate they are using the wheel and those w/out the icon are using a diff controler? hhumm interesting. i continue to hover around the 5000 mark, up 50, down 45, up 120, etc etc lol if you see "chuck norri" from the north east, that'd be me lol:lol:

Yeah, the wheel icon shows up if that's your preferred control scheme. If you play a lot of matches with the wheel (I'm not sure what the number/percentage is), it turns to a golden wheel.
Why do we not have an FC exchange in the Wiki like we do with Smash? MK is set up for SD team matches even moreso than smash, since 12 people can play.

I enjoyed playing with the wheel, haven't tried with the other controllers yet.
Very fun game, glad to see another release of it, I'm not to big on the bikes yet. They should of been their own game and I liked having the double cart so that kind of sucked not having that included.
But over all I can give it 8.5

I agree. This game will have a lot of replay from the online feature alone.
Although it made me realize I need to get a little more comfortable with the game and the wheel.
I cruised through the 50cc cups in an hour or so and figured I would try out the online part of the game. Everyone was from outside the U.S. and I didn't finish higher than 4th in the three races I tried.

I think with other more realistic games on other consoles I play for the challenge and get all serious and pissed off and stuff lol...but this game is like when i was younger and i actually played for fun :) to bad the wii doesnt really have a hard drive and they could make new downloadable tracks and stuff that would have been an added bonus!

can you dodge them in this game? In the DS version, it's possible to hold a powerslide speed boost and release it right before the shell slams down. If you time it right, you can escape it. There are plenty of youtube vids showing how.

Ugh, I had a preorder from newegg, but checked back a few weeks after I did it and there was no trace of anything confirming a preorder so I thought they dropped/ignored my pre-order, so I decide to pre-order it on EBGames online along with GTA4. Then on Friday I get charged for it and I'm like WTF. On top of that, I didn't realize it was a stupid Sunday release until they shipped my EBGames order (I bought the game Sunday morning), so I'm gonna have a grand total of 3 copies of MK. Two to refund...yay.

I haven't been able to do that. Then again, the blast radius on the blue sheel is HUGE. I've had it take out 1st-6th, all in the same blast. Of course, I was 7th.
I need to get into the 100cc class, I've almost beaten 50ccs all the way through, just 2 more retro cups to go.
This game reminds me why Mario Karts games are so much fun multiplayer. My poor wii is going to die from overuse.

The game is just not as good as you remember. It feels incredibly slow. You hold done the trigger and the game just stops. It feels like you are not doing something. I always want to go faster.
The online games are ok, if you get a disconnect you lose a bunch of xp's. Regular game sucks. The close game setting cannot be turned off so you can never get a large lead or get too far behind (if you are losing you get bullet bill after bullet bill.)
It is a frustrating experience. You cannot do as well as you want become the game forces you back. I do not know if there is an unlimited class because I have not spent enough time in the game, but the starting classes stink. 50cc is retard easy and 150cc is not hard, but frustratingly stupid. You will be driving in first place only to get shelled, shrunk, inked, and then knocked into the lava all at the same time.
This is a kids game. Some simpletons will say it is more, but it is not. I wanted a fun racer. Nothing with too much depth. Just something fun. MKW is not that game. It feels slow (like driving around in 2nd gear all the time.) The AI is garbage. Close game kills the fun. Wheelies are stupid (you are winning a race and get wheelied out of first and there is nothing you can do about it.) Online games are hit or miss (little control over them.)

If you live in the midwest near a Nebraska Furniture Mart (Omaha and KC have them), you can get a free 2nd wheel. $49.77+tax for game and 2 wheels. My local bestbuy even honored the ad and saved me an hour+ drive. :) Plus they are having an in-store tournament (Sat, May 3rd) where the winner receives a small TV and DS, second place is just the TV. I think sign up is limited to 64 people and starts in the morning. Check their website (www.nfm.com) or browse their weekly ad for details.
I gotta say I love the wheel. I thought it was a retarded gimmick after seeing it online, and planned on discarding/selling shortly after buying the game. But I got to say after trying it it's definitely added to the fun. It's not as quick as using a stick, but it's loads more fun. I'll likely to switch to a controller to try to unlock everything, but I'm keeping my plastic wheels. I guess I'm no longer a hard-core gamer when I sacrifice gameplay for fun.
So far I'm liking the game, and it's great anytime I can find a game my gf enjoys as much as I do.

I complain about the speed of the go karts at the local track too. Can't figure out why they can't emulate NASCAR speeds. Pretty boring if you ask me.
The fact that you find it boring has nothing to do with the game itself. I find most FPS games boring as well. That doesn't keep them from being critically acclaimed.
If you go into a game with unrealistic expectations... you're bound to be disappointed. If you go into a game without expectations and enjoy it for what it is, a game, then you're bound to enjoy it. The game is targeted towards kids. The Wii is targeted towards kids. Perhaps you're be better off with something that would appeal to your obviously sophisticated pallet.
I agree with the AI being a bit overzealous. I have only played for about 3 hours. Perhaps a little too early to admit defeat. As with most games, practice makes perfect and strategy is formed by experience.
As for explaining ourselves for why we like it...
It's fun. I had a blast yesterday and can't wait to play again. I haven't even tried the battle mode or even playing with a friend locally or online.

Meh. I don't care if he comes back in and bashes the game some more.
I'm not trying to tell him that it's not a crappy game. I'm simply telling him that his opinion of the game is....just that - an opinion. The game may certainly seem crappy to him. That's perfectly fine, and he's completely entitled to his own opinion.
But to tell everyone else that he's right and they're all wrong and that it is indeed a stupid, horrible game - that's where he's wrong. That's the simple point I'm making.

I got the game yesterday with an extra wheel for free and I must say that I got nostalgic for all right reasons. Mario Kart 64 remains one of my favorite games of all time and the controls are so similar to it that the learning curve was not bad. I am already loving the game even though I did one circuit and came in 3rd place.
ddmesales

Played a few hours last night. I did have the N64 one when it came out, but havent played it in years.
At first, I too thought it was slow..but that changes as you get into the more difficult tracks with the tighter turns and obstacles, etc.
Its very easy to win the initial 50cc circuits--but you still have the challenge of getting the highest rank on each of the circuits.
Played a little bit online..and got smoked. Need to be more familier with all the courses before really competing.
If you want to just race the course, and improve.. then the time trial is the way to go. I thoroughly enjoy the Time trial modes and testing different vehicles to see what works best. (I spent most of my Wave Race play on Time Trials).
With a ton of courses and the different modes of play this wont get old for a long time.

There are a lot of "hidden" speed boosts. If you start accelerating when the second light comes on (the two has been on screen for about half it's time), you start off with a speed boost. If you're on a motorcycle you can do wheelies to get speed boosts on striaght-aways. If you switch to manual mode (instead of automatic), you can drift on corners and get more speed boosts. Doing tricks in the air also give speed boosts when you hit the ground. Plus all the speed boost bars on the track.
I haven't played online, but I'm guessing there are quite a few people who've been playing Kart since the SNES (like me), and many more since the 64. Anyone who was good at the GC one shouldn't have much of a problem adapting to the Wii version. Give it time and practice your cornering.
I'll third the notion that the SNES one is the best!

A wheel comes with the game; try it out for yourself. I got a second wheel for free buying it using a nebraska furniture mart ad. I'm loving the wheel. I haven't even tried using a standard controller.
I will warn you all things being equal, the controller will outperform the wheel slightly. It takes more time to rotate the wheel 90 degrees than it would to move a stick .5 inches.

Finally getting the hang of the wheel as well as the turns. like most of you, I thought I'd be using my classic controller for this game, but surprisingly it's 10x more fun with the wheel. I'm prolly going to go out and buy a few more so other people could look dumb going crazy on the wheel.
Tried it online, and Coin Runners is HARD! Maybe its cause I chose a bike for the first time and I couldn't control it, but I only got 7 coins... and missed about 20.

I've put in a few hours "behind the wheel" so far and I agree that the wheel adds to the fun of the game. It sucks.
The standard I use is gamecube, but I might switch over to 'mote and nunchuk so I can wheelie and trick easily.
The controls would not be bad if I could figure out how to remap buttons. I do not need buttons on the face and top doing the same thing.

I need to get my PS3 back from the fine peoples at Sony so I can play my GTAIV.
I was just positing the statement that the Wheel accessory sucks. Steering is off (tendency to oversteer) and the button layout is not conducive to fun gameplay.
But you will not listen to this. Mario Kart is amazing. Forget the fact that pretty much everyone is saying what I am saying. It is still the greatest game ever.

At least once per race I'm getting knocked, shelled or blasted off the side. It's killing my times and placements. I've been going for the 1 star on all courses, and it's really hard.
I haven't been this irritated at a game for a long, long time. I feel like cheap hits are the only reason I'm not acing all the races, as it's not being first, but staying there for more than 10 seconds that's hard.
Also, has anyone else noticed that some of the time trials are really, really fast?

My favorite character is my Mii. He uses the medium bikes (this can vary for Mii's depending on size), of which I like the one with the highest top speed I've unlocked so far (it's just the crotch rocket looking one.. I forget the name). My only complaint with the Mii character is the voice. Very fruity and gay. :( Plus my gf constantly makes fun of me for it.. (that bitch!)
You have to take the bumps and bruises, it's part of the game and frustration. After beating 100cc, 50cc seems like a cakewalk now. And for whatever reason (maybe luck), blue shells don't seem to appear as often (1-2 times instead of 2-4 times).
As for the time trials, just wait til you unlock the fast staff times. Now those are fast! I've gotten about 10 so far.

The wheel is great. I played with it exclusively for the first few days. If you're experiencing oversteer, it's user error. The wheel will punish you for over exaggerated movements, much like any other control scheme. The key is to use controlled movements when steering/correcting. I found the button layout to be simple and rather intuitive. My only beef is that there are times when going into a turn, I must have made a slight movement opposite the turn and in the process of turning into the turn I've hit the drift button but it thinks I'm wanting to drift the opposite way. That's my error, though. I just need to get the timing down.
Last night, for the first time, I used the wiimote/nunchuck scheme, and I may actually prefer it. I've not done any time trials comparing the two, but I expect there won't be much difference, but a slight edge in course time to the wiimote/nunchuk combo. But that's just for me. My wife kicks a pretty serious amount of butt with the wheel, and she's lost with the nunchuck scheme.

Believe me, as everyone else is saying. although it "might" look like they are similar in graphics.. Mario Kart Wii has crazy interacting graphics that its amazing. many times I'm just driving, and I tell myself, wow, this looks pretty cool!
They have 1 stages which I think is called bowsers castle. Well at one part of the stage, the floors were swaying like its was an earthquake. graphics.. blew my mind away. All I could say is that, if you've ever played Nintendo, or SNES, or Genesis, you know for a fact that graphics do not make the game fun.

sorry .. im not reading the entire thread so it may have been discussed...
You can use your own Mii? do i need to go back and find how this is done.. or am i just missing something?
thx
Yeah, Mii's are unlockable (as well as a few different outfits I guess, but these are harder to unlock). The fastest way to unlock it is probably getting gold on the 100cc cup that includes rainbow road (special cup?). Interesting note (been said before), the size of your Mii affects the bikes/karts you can choose.

That's all we have to do? I heard we had to get gold in ever cup! Hmm.. guess I'll be playing my ass off on Rainbow Road..
I hate tracks that have open roads that I can fall off.. cause 99% of the time.. I fall off.

I know that. I just dont' want to pay for a game that is the same as MK64 . I already DL'ed that on Wii Mart.

That's for outfit A, for the second outfit, I believe you have to beat all 32 expert staff ghost times.
I for one, cannot see how they do it. I've watched the videos on the handful I have, and even when I copy them, I end up not even being close. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
I don't like my Mii much, he's light, but doesn't go as fast as Toad and Dry Bones.
Has anyone else noticed that characters in the same weight class have vastly different properties?

Trust me, It's not. It looks 100x better than that video. Sure, the N64 tracks are the same, but every new track is tons of fun. I love the GC tracks too, they really mix things up.
MK Wii is everything that was good about MK64, but stepped up to the next level, it's definitely worth it.

To get stars, you need to be in first place for the whole event. Maybe you can get by with a single second place finish and still get 1 star, but it's based upon time through the course, as well as placing first.

I'll post what I know, then what I've heard on the Mii's. *Spoilers... duh*
What I know:
You can unlock Mii Outift A by getting gold on Special Cup at 100cc. To get the special cup, you need to beat the previous cups on 100 cc. I was able to unlock both the Mii outfit A and the Special Cup despite having a 2nd place finish on the very first cup (still have a second, haven't gone back and tried it again yet). I wasn't able to unlock the Mii by placing (2nd or 3rd) in the special cup though (it took me 5 tries to get first, which included 2 secondplace finishes and 2 thirds).
So if you want a Mii, race 100cc on the Wii courses (not the retro) When you unlock the Special Cup (Rainbow Road), race it until you get a gold.
As far as using the Mii, A smaller Mii (it appears to be height and weight related) gives you access to the small cart/bike set. A medium sized me to the medium bikes/carts. A large Mii equals large bikes. If it's like double dash, the difference between characters aside from small, medium and large is nonexistant. The weight of the Bowser should be equal to Donkey Kong or Waluigi, but I haven't tested this theory out yet. I didn't notice a difference between Toad or Koopa Troopa though.
What I've read:
You can unlock Mii Outfit B by unlocking all 32 fast staff ghosts (you do not have to beat them.. that would be crazy). This is the same way you unlock baby luigi, it just takes more time and effort. Note: A fast staff ghost is not the same as the ones default on the game. You have to beat the default ghosts by a varying margin in order to unlock the fast staff ghosts (which put up great times).
You can also unlock a Mii outfit C by getting a 15,000 rank in online mode. This also appears to be difficult, as I'm 4-0 in online battle, yet my battle ranking went down. :(
I've read both of these on multiple sites.

so when i unlock my mii the first time.... i get a Large kart... cuz my mii is huge. right?
if so... does that mean i cant unlock a small or medium kart? cuz what if i lose weight, and change my mii to reflect that? will i get a medium or even small kart?

You don't unlock carts by unlocking the Mii, you just get the option of using one of the three sets of carts (small, medium, and large). If your Mii loses some weight, it's entirely possible you will be able to choose from medium or small carts, but you won't be able to choose from more than one group (small, medium and large) at a time.
You can unlock more carts by completing various tasks (Grand Prix, Time Trials, etc.). See a site like IGN.com or gamefaqs.com to see how to unlock everything.

For those that have the game, would you consider it a "system seller?" I'm seriously considering buying a wii just for this game. I own a couple of the previous versions of mario kart but I'm itching to play this version but not sure if its worth throwing down $300+ for it.

Is it a system seller? Not to me. (I am loving this game.. I just wouldn't spend $300+ to play it alone).
Ask yourself this, was Double Dash or Mario Kart DS a system seller? You know what you're getting with this game. Sure it tweaked the mold slightly with the addition of motorcycles (which I love), tricks (meh), the plastic wheel/motion to steer (again I love), and tweaked battle (no longer 4 player balloon battle, it's now 12 player team battle... balloon or coin collectin... meh).
The online is completely free as of now, and when I played it on a weak (1 bar) wifi signal, there was almost no lag! That's fantastic. I've had it for less than a week, but it's probably my second favorite Mario Kart game so far (only behind the SNES version.. nothing can rekindle that magic for me).
Try it out at bestbuy or another store (they have demos set up). It's a challenge to unlock everything, plus you'll have Nintendo's best online effort to date (which isn't too shabby surprisingly). The online includes versus racing, team coin battle, and team balloon battle. It appears they will have tournaments, and they have online rankings.
I'd say buy it if you are a die hard fan of the series, but try it out in a store first. Personally, Wii Sports is the system seller for me. I love that game. All the other games (Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, Guitar Hero's, etc.) are icing on the cake. Plus it's a great party system as most females (as well as old/young people) are willing to try it out and like to play.

The wii's still come w/ wii sports don't they? I know the ones I saw this weekend had them with it. I called this afternoon to see if they still had any still in stock and they said they said they had 2 left. I have heard wii sports was a blast to play, but there's only a couple of other games for the wii that I have seen that interest me. I guess the chance of playing online is what really has me interested....plus the fact that ITS MARIO KART!

Hmmm.. That's a really tough call. I don't think 1 game can make it a system seller. Unless this game is THE game of the century, a $50 game is not reason enough to go buy a $300 system (unless of course you have money to burn) I had the same dilemma as you with the Show for PS3. I really wanted the game, and actually thought of buying a PS3 solely for the Show. Then I realized.. what if the game isn't that great, or what if I don't buy any more games for the system.. Thats $300+ down the drain.
If you ask me, if you have a family, or have a bunch of friends that love video games.. That itself should be a system seller, because this system was more intended for "party" play. But don't get me wrong, if you'll only be playing by yourself, the system is still fun. Although the replay value of most of the games aren't that big unless you play with a few other people.
Then again, the system is still fairly new. So I'm sure once developers start tapping into the full features that the Wii has and stop porting alot of the games over, you'll start seeing more fans of the Wii, both you and old.
BTW... If I didn't have the Wii at first, and this game came out.. Being the HUGE Mario Kart fan that I am.. It would have been a system seller for me.
So pretty much I contradicted everything I just posted.

:secret: MKDS is considered a system seller :)
While I haven't played MK:Wii, I doubt any one game on Wii is TRULY a system seller -- but the collective of metroid, zelda, mario, kart, and smash most certainly are. At least one of those is a system seller for almost every person who's played a nintendo video game. And for everyone else, there's wii sports  (and soon, wii fit).

I'm about to throw my controller into my TV. I cannot get Gold on the 150cc races. It's not because I'm not good (I've got fast ghosts on most tracks now), rather, it's because of the barrage of items that keep getting thrown at me.
As an example (and this is by no means the worst), on Bowser's Castle (new), I got blue shelled. At the top of the explosion, I got a pow block above my head. A red shell hit me the instant I landed, and just as I stopped spinning, the POW block hit. I didn't move more than a foot before Waluigi bumped me... right into the lava.
Is anyone else pissed as all hell at the cheapness of the AI and items in this game?

omg...i agree. for one race, i got 1st in the first 3 races and then in the last race, i was about to get 1st again but then I got blue shelled, hit by everything from every character and ended up in 11th. I feel this game is pretty gay especially in 150cc. Im super pissed about the fact there is no 2 player grand prix. That is how I beat double dash for the all cup.

The easy way to avoid this is race in 6th place most of the time and jump out to the lead in the end.
You can go higher, but I think 3 and 4 place do not item you as well.
This is in my limited experience. As I had posted previously, the trick is not to go for best lead. You will never lap anyone as they game does not allow it. Instead it will just try harder and harder to push you back. So you need to run the middle and just prevent ai from getting an insurmountable lead. You only need about 3/4 to 1/2 of a lap to go from middle to first (or worst to first) Avoid leading going near lava and bridges and stuff as you will get bumped liked crazy. The worse you are doing the better the game treats you.
It is very hard to maintain lead entire race. There are unavoidable weapons that will get you.

Has anyone encountered the steering flips backwards on a few sharp turns?
I'm not sure if it only happens with one of my Wiimotes. But I was playing over the weekend and on a few sharp turns to the RIGHT, after a certain point it was almost like the axis of the wiimote flipped completely 180 degrees and I do a sharp turn LEFT into the wall.
It must have happened 5 or 6 times on Saturday. Different courses too. I used my other wiimote on Sunday and it didn't happen once.
Harmonica
05-06-2008, 06:25 AM
On the invert turning:
I've had similar occurances with the steering, but I also know the reasons why it happens (for me). There are two main reasons:
1. I use manual drift and as I prepare to enter a turn I generally steer a tad to the opposite to get a faster boost. Sometimes I hit the drift button a second or two early and I drift in the direction opposite the turn.
2. If the angle of the controller dips down (not upright.. or at least about 60-90 degrees) it messes with the steering. Try being more steady with how you hold the wheel.
If it ain't these two, then it likely ain't a problem with your game. You could have a defunct wii-mote, but I'd try to recreate the phenominon before declaring the problem.

For me, it works whatever I do. The tricks are random, there's a bunch of them, and depending on the time you have in the air, it picks different ones. As far as I can see, the direction you flick the Wiimote has no effect.
I'm loving Toad on the Jet Bubble right now.

Yes and I've also noticed that if I spin the remote too fast, it's like I didn't spin it at all. Really bad if you start sliding at the same time and crash into a wall.
Try slapping the remote's base hard against your hand a few times. Nintendo has said that sometimes the sensors get stuck and a few good whacks and they'll work normally again.

On certain courses, it's nice to have the extended speed boost of the cart. You can hug an inside turn (instead of drifting outside with two speed boosts) and get a huge boost at the end.

I experienced the opposite. In both single player and online, when I run in the middle of the pack, I am constantly hit with items and bounced around by the heavier karts. However, if I can build a lead, I can usually deal with the blue turtle shells and don't have too many problems maintaining that lead. Just as an example: I had such a large lead on an online race, they didn't let the first 11 people finish because "it was 30 seconds since the leader finished."
As always, YMMV.

However, if I can build a lead, I can usually deal with the blue turtle shells and don't have too many problems maintaining that lead. Just as an example: I had such a large lead on an online race, they didn't let the first 11 people finish because "it was 30 seconds since the leader finished."
As always, YMMV.
Online is different. I did lap some people online too. Some people were really really bad (there is no chat so you do not know who you are playing against, but I would imagine most onliners are really young). When it came to playing the actual game I never could get near lapping. I think the cart slows down when you get a large lead. I think my best margin of victory on 150cc (it was all I played) was only like 8-10 seconds. Online it is easily 3x that. It also somewhat was dependent on the track. I played through and beat all the classics and half of the original content. There were some maps that were impossible to get a large lead on while others 5-6 second mov's were simp as shit. What I really hated is that I always without exception lost my star immediately upon gaining first place. Not like I used it and it expired, basically as soon as hit position one I would get shelled so I could not use the star. That steamed my beans.
But yeah online go for best time. At worst case scenario there will maybe three other players who are not complete muppets to that actually have to beat.

Thats what I thought.. Just wasn't sure. I'm the scared one thats afraid to try something because it may make me end up in last place. lol
BTW, does anybody have a list of all the unlockables and how to unlock them?
Here ya go:

My best combo has been Toad with the Blue falcon (unlockable). It looks like a car from F-Zero or something.
I have almost everything unlocked now except Dry Bowser and a few carts.

It helps when you have a significant other that is just as obsessed with the game as you :)
Her online VR score is better than mine! She has like 7500 and I just broke 7000. Though, she had the last two days off. And when she tries to unlock stuff, she only does it in my profile. At least until I get everything.

Haven't unlocked that yet. But Blue Falcon is Captain Falcon's craft from F-Zero.

Really? I can't stand the blue falcon. I ran a few time trials with it, and gave it a whirl, and it was awful. It just feels so loose to me.
I've got just a bit more to unlock as well, but Dry Bowser is the worst character by far. It's hard enough just to win 150CC races, much less star in them. I cannot keep the AI off my back for more than 30 seconds until something comes up to whack me.

On 150cc, so far every time I finished first I got a star ranking. Probably because you have to race well to finish first. Even when I got silver's and bronze's I got A's and B's.

Made progress last night. Have star ratings in all the 50ccs. Really need to unlock the top karts to go after the expert ghosts and to dominate online.

I use the bowser bike or the crotch-rocket one depending on my character size. I generally go for top speed over accel, but if the courses are nasty and there is some speed reducers, I try to get some off-road capabilities. While a top speed bikes help, it's more about weapons, speed boosting and cornering (trick every jump, boost most corners, and hit every speed boost). Good old luck also comes into play though.
I'm finally trying to experiment with other options though, so it may change.

IMO, speed means nothing except on the most straightforward courses. You really want good acceleration and boosts. Ideally, you want to spend as much time drifting and tricking as possible (without losing a good line). Bad acceleration means that every weapon you're hit by punishes you twice as much -- from the initial hit and then the slow recovery.

Bonkman has an excellent point here. Driving heavy characters can really punish you, as hits hurt twice as much. If you have decent acceleration, it's not too bad to get hit, but if you're big and slow, it'll really hurt.
I use lighter bikes because they drift/ trick great, have good boost, and decent top speeds. Speed only really helps in time trials, as in real races, you'll be getting knocked around too much to top out your speed except for short periods. Better that you recover qiuckly and/ or turn well, rather than drive really fast.

When you guys say "star" in GP mode, what does that mean? So far, I've gotten gold in almost all the cups in 50cc, but my grade has been E's. lol. Still trying to get used to it.
Thanks!
