George, I hope your mom gets better soon!!!

Since the EC show is coming back on. I need some good come-backs for people who ask me if I am "one of them"... I need something short, to the point of my disproval yet tactful :coverlaf: Is that too much to ask??
I wasn't dishonest enough to make the show.

:wave2: lupus, I want to come play in your new kitchen!

Did anyone here get an HP Touchpad?
No touchpad, and the kitchen will probably be in a year or two. Lots of other things to fix first if they approve the short sale we want.

My problem is keeping the sarcasm out of the reply...........I used to be a die hard, never leave the house without makeup person--I have a really pasty white complexion, hence the nickname Casper in highschool...
:lmao: I'm not the only one! I don't tan, I just burn. I know redheads than tan better than I do. I tell people I have the complexion of a programmer.

...TP thread... holler when you find things "over your head" don't have a TP but I can help with jargon, methods etc.
Thanks! Maybe it will make more sense when I've got the TP in front of me. Which should be ... sometime TOMORROW! :bounce:
I wasn't dishonest enough to make the show. ...
:lmao:

I got almost no sleep last night. Realized at 2:30 a.m., while chatting on FB, that I was supposed to go to a meeting at 10 a.m. Decided if I woke up before 9:30, I'd go; otherwise I'd skip it. Woke up at 9:25 after a night of tossing and turning. It was almost like fever sleep but without the fever -- bed felt too small, covers were too heavy, was too hot, too cold, had too many damned CATS on the bed ... LOL!

So I did get up, get dressed and go to the meeting. Glad I did; it was interesting. Then did errands, went to see Mom (sleeping; woke her up to give her some yogurt, but then let her go back to sleep) and came home to get clothes off the line and cook dinner. Put away the leftovers and fed the kitties, scooped a litter box, and that's it for the day.

So I got a lot done, and have been playing on the interwebz ever since. :compunch:

Anyone have any good recipes using pears? They are ripe and plentiful this year. I make preserves and that's about it other than eating them raw. We love them in salads, with cheese and just to eat off the tree. I just have never cooked them. Lots of recipes on the web. Just thought some of you foodies might have some tried and true delights.

Pear Crunch! Baked pears topped with crunchy granola.
Baked Pears (makes 6 cups)
6 pears (peeled, cored, sliced & cut into bite size pieces ~ 4 cups of sliced pears)
1 1/4 c. unsweetened apple juice
6 T maple syrup (optional but makes it sweeter :) )
Juice of 2 lemons (4 Tbsp)
2 Tbsp cornstarch (we use organic)
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp nutmeg
Mix together and then bake at 350 F for ~ 1 hr or until fruit is soft
Crunchy granola (will last a couple of weeks if tightly covered) (makes 6 3/4 cups)
3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 1/2 cups walnuts, chopped coarsely (or substitute another nut from your pantry)
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/3 cup raisins
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp safflower oil (can use canola or corn instead)
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup apple juice (for moisture)
3/4 tsp vanilla
Mix dry ingredients together, mix wet ingredients in a separate bowl and then combine. Bake on cookie sheet at 350 F for 45 min - 1 hr (turn at least every 15 min to turn it a nice brown color)

Oh, easy and yummy is a Pear-Maple Galette (tarte rustique or crostata)! I've been making them with our pears and they've been a big hit.

Pear-Maple Galette

Single unbaked pie crust
6 to 8 ripe pears, peeled and cut into chunks
1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1/4 to 1/3 cup sugar
2 Tbsp flour
Cinnamon
1 to 2 Tablespoons maple syrup

Roll pie crust out into a large round on a piece of parchment paper and lay it on a pizza pan or cookie sheet. It's OK if it ends up hanging over the edges a little.

Sprinkle some sugar and cinnamon on center of crust, in about an 8" circle.

Mix pears and nuts. Pile onto sugar circle, alternating with layers of sugar, flour and cinnamon.

Drizzle maple syrup over fruit.

Bring edges of crust up over fruit, leaving the center 4 to 6 inches open.

Bake 30 to 45 minutes, until crust is lightly browned and pears are tender.

You can change up the ingredients -- I've added dried cranberries, used brown sugar instead of white, left out the maple, done it without nuts ... go crazy! :coverlaf:

It's small, but it will serve 4. Best served warm with ice cream.

oh yummm pears.

i like em grilled, and then served warm with some blue cheese or goat cheese or gruyere and walnuts and a drizzle of honey.

or, in a saucepan melt butter, add cinnamon, vanilla extract, brown sugar. mix well till sugar is melted and mixed in. toss in sliced pears and coat thoroughly. grill for a few minutes till caramelized.
put pears on plates. drizzle remnant of butter mixture on em. serve with vanilla bean icecream.

:faint:

want more? recipes that take a little more effort: brandied pears, poached pears, pears with brown sugar, lemon, vanilla and cinnamon wrapped in puff pastry or phyllo and then baked for your own lilttle fruit pockets/hand pies (much like the galette by george).

you are making me hungry.

software question: anyone here know of a good place to get photoshop and illustrator cheap? i have the win versions but need the mac versions now. can get student edition but that's still so expensive.

Posting here cause I'm not sure where else to ask.

I get my P&G coupons snail mail with my RedPlum on Wednesdays. I got the RedPlum yesterday but no P&G section. My 2 daughters did not get a P&G in their Redplums yesterday either. I am in Milwaukee and my daughters are Saint Francis and Cudahy.

Anyone else not get theirs?

Oh, wait, no, that was what I made for dessert. It was my BRAND NEW TOUCHPAD! :bounce:

I played with it for a little bit last night, following some of the recommendations here (skipping the ones that would have required me to go back downstairs and boot up the Mac). Apps installed include Epicurious  and Angry Birds  .

Mom is doing better, to the point they're thinking of moving her back to the rehab place for PT/OT as soon as tomorrow. She doesn't want to go! She wants to stay in that nice room in the hospital. She's in the new tower, private room, 6th floor, nice view out over the city and the mountains, gets all her meals brought to her, people in and out a few times a day ... LOL!

I didn't see the doctor or RN tonight so don't know if she's tested negative for the C. diff. yet -- it takes 3 consecutive negatives to consider it cured.

If all is well, I'm heading for CT tomorrow. Combination of house concert, engagement party and folk festival crew chief meeting -- my first as a crew chief!

I have to make a cake tonight for that, so  for now.

hmmm never tried gimp. that looks pretty promising... might try it out side by side with photoshop and compare.

i see it lets you do the broad basics of a GNU editor - masks, paths, layers etc.
do you know, does it let you work with RAW images? i looked but couldn't find the info online.
and how is the image correction here? do you like it?

i wonder if there is an open-source vector editor (like illustrator).

thank you for telling me about GIMP! i'll give it a run!

p.s. the new 3-d features of photoshop (check em out on their site) are so FUN. and open up so many more creative possibilities.

BTW, this is the "bowl of Jell-O" (http://www.ehow.com/how_4834441_amazing-jello-shot-jigglers.html) I made for this weekend.

:whee:

I used margarita Jell-O, Triple Sec and a can of mandarin oranges (put juice in the Jell-O and broke up the oranges so they are floating on top). Pretty and kind of Halloweeny, with the dark green and orange.

Was going to make pina colada Jell-O with coconut rum and pineapple bits, but when the first recipe took most of a bottle of Triple Sec (20 ounces is a lot of hooch!), I decided one would be enough.

I'm fairly certain GIMP will let you edit RAW files if you downloaded one of the more recent versions. Help files should tell you for sure. And there is an OS vector editor, it's called InkScape. The trace bitmap feature in it is pretty darn cool if you like to make textures, stamps, etc. for your raster images.

the Kohl's thread is awesome, and people there really helpful. introduce yourself and let em know that you're new to Kohls and would be grateful for pointers on how to go about it. i still haven't figured it out or else i would help you.

i know this much:
when you sign up your email with kohl's they send you a $5 off in store welcome email. you can use that for a discount.
some people sell those $5 qs on ebay. some people buy bunches of those and only use those to shop. several kohlies on the thread completely frown on that move.

also, from time to time, with new store openings, kohls gives you a $10 off. people love those!

online purchases... if you buy a certain threshold, there's free shipping. so people pad their orders and then return what they don't want. also buying a certain amount gives you back kohl's cash. so people buy during KC periods to maximize their savings. sort of like RRs and ECBs etc.

that's the extent of my understanding. not nuanced at all as you can see. :look:

i pop into the K thread from time to time, mostly lurk. see you there! :D

I might end up having to take it up with you or beat the boy into submission. We only have 4 regular size plates we are using, but he refuses to get out the "good china" that was given to us because no one else wanted it. Or maybe I should try the dollar store.

the dollar tree has decent looking plates from time to time.
few years ago i bought these great square white serving plates that looked straight out of the crate and barrel catalog.
then i got home and found they had a california lead warning sticker on them.
apparently dollar tree employees tend to remove these stickers in other states so often you can't tell. but sometimes a few slip through the cracks.

researched and found that with a lot of dinnerware made in china, they're still using lead in the ceramics. that's no longer done with ceramic glazes used in the US. but it is allowed in china. in many cases the lead is leaching into food.

which is all to say, buy dollar store dinnerware with care. but then again, same is true of name brand stuff at stores. you just have to investigate if you care about avoiding lead.

p.s. around this time of year, bed bath and beyond has big clearance sales on dinnerware packs, post back to school season. combine with the 20% off coupons and you can get a great deal. ditto target, sans the 20% off coupon.

OK, this has been a good couple of weeks. I scored two major hits -- first the TouchPad, now a Dyson Animal! :woot:

But there's a bit of a catch ...

There was 1 DC-28 left at my Target -- the only one in about 200 miles. (They were being clearanced out.) I checked on it Monday and it was $420, only 30% off. Tuesday ... $420. Skipped Wednesday. Thursday night at 9 p.m. I checked back, and it was marked down to 50% off. But the box was all taped up.

So I took it to the register and asked if I could check inside to make sure everything was there. They said since it had the "spider" (string and electronic lock) on it, it must have been checked over and deemed OK, but if there were any problems, I could bring it back. $299.50 - $14.98 RedCard discount + tax = $304.44 out the door.

Finally got home after midnight, opened the box, and saw ... dirt in the vacuum.

Took it back in today and the same CSA was there. She was disgusted and said she didn't understand how anyone accepted it back as a return. We figured maybe the buyer taped the box up himself and said he'd never used it. Anyhow, she did a return for me, checked all area stores, looked at their own inventory ... no dice. So she tapped a few keys and turned the register screen toward me: "Well, I can do this." $224.62 -- an additional 25% off. Minus the RedCard discount, that was $228.33 out the door.

Thought about it for a second and said yes. The CSA, who also worked at a veterinary hospital, gave me some advice on cleaning and sanitizing the canister in case there were fleas or another animal problem. So that's what I'm doing tonight.

Now my question for Dyson owners is, could someone have pulled a scam and swapped out parts with an older vac? The serial # on the manual, the box and the vacuum all match, but could they have switched the piece with the serial # on it?

Sorry George I don't have an answer for your vacuum dilemma

I would like some opinions. My dad wants me to make a pie to win a free membership at the gym. I am trying to decide which pie would be more likely to be picked. Of course, all my pies are delicious :licklips:
Pecan, banana cream with merigue, apple pie with struestel topping.

akageorge
10-09-2011, 01:54 AM
Ducky, those all sound good! Apple might be your best bet; it's seasonal, and kinda healthy, too -- good for a gym membership contest! :eat:

Well, I decided to sell the Dyson to my friend at cost. She has been borrowing her son's vac since hers quit, and she has 2 cats and a 1-story apartment, so it will be much more practical for her. Still a slick deal, once removed! :coverlaf:

Our Kenmore just came back from the shop with $200+ worth of work for $6 (under warranty) and is working very well, so I'll just keep on the lookout for a deal on the Dyson Animal ball model.

I did a few deals this week, getting back into it after a break. Target: free dog biscuits, cheap cat treats, some clearance items. Kmart: free Softsoap, P&G deal MM, Colgate TP MM.

Splurged on a clearanced Oster rice cooker (http://www.oster.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=1990) at Kmart. My old one (this style) (http://imusausa.com/components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/product/00015.jpg) makes a mess splattering all over the counter; this one has a pressure-sealed lid. It still releases steam/liquid, but not as bad as the other, and it can also be used to make full meals, starting with sauteeing onions and ending with steaming the whole shebang. Nifty!

OK, anybody who has an iPad or TouchPad (or any other tablet computer in that form factor): This stand from CVS is awesome. Fits the TP perfectly (just remember to slide the tablet in beginning with the end that does NOT have the volume control). Heavy, stable base, easy tilt and rotate. Best 99 cents I've spent this week!

Also for those who don't check the Kmart thread, there is a good deal on All detergent this week: $3.97 but it's 2.97 with an in-ad Kmart Q (limit 3) and there were $1 MQs a couple of Sundays ago = 1.97 for 32 loads. Includes the 3x, HE, fragrance-free, etc.

Here's a photo (also shows my new rice cooker and my dinner of fried chicken, brown & wild rice and asparagus). I call this composition "Still Life with Slickdeals."

Just to clarify, Kmart fried that chicken for me ... and the Jolly Green Giant picked the asparagus. But I did mix the rice medley and cook it in the Oster.

Tonight's dinner was one of my specialties: Roasted Rosemary Chicken. I put fresh rosemary sprigs under the skin of a whole roaster and season it with garlic and lemon (lemon pepper this time). Roasted cut potatoes and carrots in the pan with the chicken and steamed some green beans. Made gravy from the pan drippings (added 1 can chicken broth 3/4 of the way through roasting -- heated first so it wouldn't crack the pan).

Leftover apple strudel for dessert. :eat:

The outdoor kitties will get the giblets. (Indoor kitties turn up their fuzzy little noses.)

I am going to town this AM to get some chickens--local Mom and Pop store have whole fryers for .39/lb, so will get a few, when I fry chicken, I usually have to do 2-3 so there is some left-over. I loved cold, fried chicken better than fresh fried chicken............I don't cook the backs or ribs, I save those for soup and with cooler weather (33degrees here this AM) the soup will probably be soon!!

Well, I tried these tonight. However, I guess I overestimated how much of the thawed dough I'd need per roll. I made 7 rolls from one loaf, then I guess I maybe let them rise a little longer than necessary.

To get the full effect, first open the above link in another window so you can flip back and forth.

BTW, she was right about the yumminess factor. Ate two so far, and only stopped there because I had just eaten a snack shortly before they came out of the oven. :yummy:

I made the rosemary rolls a few days ago, and they were yummy! And my rolls did the same as yours akageorge....they rose really high, but they tasted just fine. The only problem I had was that after the rolls were baked, some of the rosemary kept falling off the rolls, which really didn't affect their taste. But next time I make them, I'm going to add even more rosemary to the tops! They were very good, hot out of the oven, sliced in half with some butter on
the inside. This recipe is definitely a keeper in our household. :woot: Oh, I used Rhodes frozen rolls.

Really screwed up the CVS deal this week. Bought vitamins on Saturday night, saw them in the flyer for the GC deal on Sunday, tried to return & rebuy but they pointed out it's already counting on my receipt.

Then bought Bounty and Wisk, tried to pay with ECB from my mom's card.

So voided and bought on her card, and of course the GC offer didn't print ... because I bought the vitamins on my card. :ranting:

:wave2: Well, I was able to do a return & rebuy on the vitamins at CVS and complete the GC deal. Just have not been organized lately!

:whee2:

Tried out my new cordless chain saw and it's not nearly as powerful as the corded one. (I don't do gas -- too expensive and too much to go wrong! Plus I'm a 140-pound weakling and couldn't even start my BIL's regular chain saw when I borrowed it.)

But I did get a sumac tree (about 8" diameter) down and partly cut up. Sumac is fun to work with because you can practically rip a whole tree apart with your bare hands. I've even pushed them over instead of cutting them down. And yes, this is staghorn (red), not poison sumac!

Went to see my mom and we did a whole crossword puzzle. She still has some short-term memory problems ("Why did I push the call button for the nurse?") but is more and more herself. Target date for coming home is Nov. 9.

My car has been making scary noises  related to the speed of the wheels, worse when I turn. Took it in to the mechanic's and fortunately it's a small problem -- a shield of some kind on the brakes was bent slightly so it was hitting the rocker arm. They bent it back and it's better.

But they found a pinhole leak in the axle boot, also contributing to the noise. The axle will have to be replaced when I get my snow tires on in a few weeks. (Axle grease and grime all over the outside; grime inside, damaging the axle.) They quoted me only around $250 for the job. Not bad, considering the part alone could have run over $600. They take care of me there.

And they have gourmet food magazines in the waiting room, so I usually find a good recipe while I wait. :eat:

i would not wear a red dress with high heeled red velvet boots. too much.

frankly, i wouldn't necessarily wear an all black dress. too much of a contrast. the red boots are centerpiece enough. you want the rest to be a pictureframe for the boots.

try something softer - a light grey or charcoal grey (dark, but softer than black); or try something like a heathered mushroom. some neutral, but not one with as hard a contrast as solid black.

i'm sure you will look fab!

p.s. you don't have to do a dress. if you like the idea of black, you can do something like a black pencil skirt, with a nice top and the red boots. have the top be some neutral like cream or grey or such, with a small print that has a little bit of red, so it picks up on the boots but is not matchy matchy. or even something like a fine houndstooth or glen plaid sorta print on a silk fabric for the blouse. just depends where you guys are going and how dressy it needs to be.

asking her to show up in a bow ain't happening. she probably feels silly doing it. or doesn't realize it's not just a fantasy, you actually mean it when you say you want that.
my suggestion: get her a bow for christmas. and a sweet note saying she's the best present you've ever received. something tells me you'll be unwrapping that present very quickly.

make it sweet (it's already inherently sexy) and maybe she won't be embarrassed/feeling awkward/uncomfortable.

i don't know hon, and i don't even know what a "cinda b. card" is :lmao: BUT i do know this, in the past, when P&G has had rebates like the cookware rebate or the nerf rebate, even purchases from stores that haven't been officially mentioned in the list of retailers (like Rite Aid or CVS) have qualified for the rebate. I don't know that the rebate center checks that. So if you're against a postmark deadline, I would send it anyways.

:wave2: Hello again! GG, I have until 12/7, so no rush, I'll call tomorrow.

Wanted to share tonight's recipe. It uses no seasoning except the onion and what's already in the sausage. I don't even salt the water for the rice or broccoli. It's :yummy: !

Quick & Healthy Sausage and Rice Skillet

1 Tbsp olive or grapeseed oil
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 rib celery, chopped
1 package beef or turkey frozen brown-and-serve sausage
1/2 lb. fresh or frozen chopped broccoli
3 cups cooked brown rice (I used 1:2 wild:brown)

Saute onion and celery in oil over medium-high heat until slightly browned.

Turn heat to medium-low. Push vegetables to side and add sausage. Cook, turning, until sausage is browned.

Meanwhile, steam broccoli until tender.

Turn heat to low. Remove sausage from pan and cut into small pieces. Return to pan, along with steamed broccoli. Add rice and mix well. Cook until heated through.

How's you Mama George?
She's doing well and is scheduled to come home Nov. 9. I'm concerned about a couple of issues, like they've had her in Depends (because she had an intestinal infection when she first got there, couldn't do the toilet) and they haven't been doing a toilet schedule (although the infection has been controlled) ... have to talk to someone tomorrow about that. I can't deal with adult diapers yet. My sister could, but she works part-time so isn't available a couple of times a day.

But mentally and physically, she is doing well. Thanks for asking!

I have a friend who wants to adopt one of the stray cats I've been feeding. The kitty showed up tonight so I brought him in onto a screen porch so he'll be here when she comes, but the poor thing is terrified! There's food and a litterbox and a basket with a blanket, but he is cowering in the corner behind a planter. I'm hoping he'll be OK with a little time.

Can you give the cat a little cardboard box it can hide in? It may start feeling more comfortable.

I did put a cat carrier out there, with towels in it, and there's a basket with a blanket. I've been going out and petting him every couple of hours. The woman isn't coming for him until Monday, so I need to keep him in until then!

as kids when we had little puppies, and they were terrified, we were told to wrap something soft and warm in a blanket (like a hot water bag, or one of those bean bags you can heat in the microwave) and one of those ticking clocks.

the warmth and the ticking make em think they're near their mommy, or another warm body, atleast. we tried it and it worked miraculously.

does that work for kittens?

:wave2: Back from my weekend away.

gg: Kitty Fuzzbutt is doing well. I still don't have an adopter lined up, but am hopeful. He's such a sweetie. I couldn't do the hot water bottle, etc., because I was going to be away, but he likes the cat carrier with the blankets over it.

ducky: sounds good! I loooove green bean casserole.

I've got a London broil in the crockpot for Monday's dinner, with garlic cloves, diced tomatoes and carrots. Figure I'll make either mashed or baked potatoes or serve it with some interesting noodles. :eat:

ETA: Dessert will be the elusive Target cheesecake, finally captured alive on Saturday!

Made a Jell-O brain and Frog Eye Salad for a party on Saturday. Yum! :coverlaf:

:wave2: Wow, I actually got outdoors today in a T-shirt! It was in the low 50s, but I was warm enough because I was pulling weeds, then taking down a tree, cutting it up and stacking the wood. Feel like I got something accomplished.

My other project was installing a new water fountain for the kitties. I had to drill a hole in the counter to run the cord so it could reach the outlet and be out of the way. Got out my good B&D power drill and man, it was taking FOREVER to drill through the counter. Drill bit was smoking. I even tried a small bit, then larger, then largest, but I couldn't get more than 1/4" into the countertop. :ranting:

Ummmm ... then I remembered this is a variable-speed *reversible* drill. Yep. Apparently the last time I used it, I had been removing screws.

Turned it to forward and it went through the counter like it was butter. :lmao:

Totally OT, but can anyone tell me a good price on men's flannel lined jeans? My husband works out of doors year-round, and I was thinking that a good pair or two of lined jeans would make the winter much nicer for him. Looking around, the best price I'm finding right now is at Old Navy; $40, then 30% off, so $28. Does it get any better than that? I'd love to hear some suggestions or thoughts, thanks!

Those might be something to consider buying at Lands End. They cost more up front ($68.50) but they also have a lifetime guarantee on anything they sell. If you wind up with a rip, tear, hole, fray, pop a button, whatever: you can exchange it for a replacement.

duck, the san pellegrino water is just soda water with no sweeteners. essentially they take mineral water from springs in Italy and carbonate it. so, you don't have to make alcoholic drinks with it. in Europe, most people drink lightly carbonated water, instead of what is popular here - "flat" or "still" water. so, you can:

1. drink it cold/on ice just by itself with a meal, intead of wine or something sugary. it's just water.

2. drink it during the day in place of uncarbonated tap water. or add some fresh mint leaves and a slice of lemon OR mint leaves and a slice of tangerine to it to make it even yummier.

3. we use sparkling water with 100% pure unsweetened cranberry juice. since the juice is very tart, we dilute it 1/2 and 1/2 or 1/3rd and 2/3rd. it helps us drink lots of cranberry juice for oral, kidney, immune health. you can even add a little bit of apple juice to the mix for some sweetness: and you'll have made your own super healthy fizzy cranberry drink.

4. make lemonade with some sugar and lemon juice and add the fizz.

5. get some sparkling apple or grape cider from stores now that holidays are upon us and those go on sale. dilute with S. P. so you get the fizz and the taste, but you aren't consuming as much sugar/juice in one sitting.

6. make sorbets or sherbets with em using fruit juices/fruit purees. because of the carbonation it will likely come out very light and yummy.

of course, you could do something like use it with baking soda to remove stains from clothes  but that would be a total waste of amazing carbonated mineral water imported from Italy.

wish you were close to me. i would gratefully and gladly take them all off your hands. wish there was an SP sale around us. never seen one.

Just posted this on FB and thought I'd share it with my BSers.

As usual, I found a recipe I liked, then tweaked it. I made this two ways -- with a regular pastry dough and with the phyllo. The phyllo is so much better it's not even worth comparing. Think ice cream compared to ... well ... ice with cream.

Nutty Cranberry Apple Strudel

6 to 8 apples, peeled, sliced and cut up
1/2 cup dried cranberries
Scant 1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 cup sliced almonds (or chopped walnuts or pecans)
1/4 cup unseasoned bread crumbs
1 roll phyllo dough (1/2 package, about 15-18 leaves)
1-1/2 sticks butter

Mix apples with cranberries, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nuts and bread crumbs; set aside.

Line cookie sheet (with sides -- strudel will leak juice as it bakes) with parchment paper.

Melt butter.

Carefully place 1 phyllo leaf on a kitchen towel and brush with melted butter. Place a second leaf on top and brush with butter again. Repeat until 5 or 6 leaves (1/3 of roll) have been used.

Mound 1/3 of the filling in a 3-inch strip along the narrow end of the phyllo, leaving a 2-inch border.

Lift towel, using it to roll leaves over apples, jelly roll fashion. Brush top and long sides of the strudel with butter. Lift carefully onto cookie sheet.

Repeat the entire procedure for the second and third strudel.

Bake the strudels at 400°F for 20 to 25 minutes, until browned.

Use a wide or long spatula (like a fish turner) to remove the cooled strudels from the cookie sheet. If you don't have such a spatula, you can carefully push the strudels close together, then lift the parchment paper and slide them off onto a serving tray.

Hmm...I might get a pair or two from Old Navy for this year, just to see if my husband actually wears them; he's the kind of person who can get hot easily, so I'm not sure if I want to spend so much on something he won't wear but a few times. If he wears them a lot, we'll see about some nicer ones. :3

no worries, sweets!

lots of people don't like carbonated water. it's an acquired taste. in some parts of the world people grow up with it, so it's what you're used to.

another idea: got any of those Flavored Torani sugar syrups at home? use with SP - home made soda, and much healthier than what you find from the commercial soda makers.

JJ - ok i tasted that stuff and had to spit it out. couldn't stand it. but some people swear by it. so last year when wags had those deals for the powder packet boxes, i accumulated so many. i ended up offering them on one of the threads i go to. people were clamoring for them.
i divided em into 3 and mailed to 3 SDers. they covered shipping costs. it was a steal for them and a deal for me (to get it out of the house). :D

Just coming to post a quick note re: SD

I just learned that anyone can go to your profile page and see your entire friends and contacts list.
And worse yet, where before you could tell who was visiting your page, now you longer can see that.
Which means people can snoop on you, and because of you, they can check in on your friends, and you wouldn't even know who'd looking in on you.

Sigh.
I just posted a request on the User CP thread asking the SD team to please fix the above two things/give us controls.

In the meanwhile I am deleting my entire friends and contacts list. If any of you are on it, please don't be offended. It's not because I don't want to be associated with you, it's because I don't want people snooping on you because of your link to me.

Today while shopping I came up with a set of rules:

I have already driven at least 30 minutes to get to this store so I am already full of road rage so here are a few rules to avoid trouble.

1. I am usually easy going, but even I have my limits. I will show you the same courtesy you show me.

2. If you insist on putting your cart on one side of the aisle and standing on the other side, remember I will have to hit your cart several times to move it, but it is likely I will only have to hit you once.

3. Your children are cute, but after they dart out in front of me half a dozen times I am liable to mistake them for targets and go for high score.

4. Do not keep stopping in front of me. I know this store like the back of my hand and I am on a mission. There are other sales to get to.

5. If I am going down an aisle don't pull out in front of me and look at me like I should move. I consider this a challenge to a game of chicken. I am probably bigger and at least a whole lot meaner than you.

7. Yes I am big, mean and ugly, but don't stare when you see me buying make-up. It is a money maker.

8. Yes, I am buying 20 boxes of Gas-X, don't judge me. I left plenty on the shelf.
9. Do not clear a shelf in front of me. A jury of my peers (SD'ers) will consider it justifiable homicide.

10. Beware if I am rolling a very full cart and you with your empty cart or no cart at all, step in front of me suddenly I may accidentally on purpose not see you.

11. You may be important, but not to me. I do not want to hear your phone conversation. Speak at a normal level or better yet, hang it up.

12. If I have not started my transaction I will let you go ahead me for a few items. However, once my transaction has started do not get behind me when there are other lanes available and then act impatient over my coupons. I am sure I had them out so you could have seen them before you got in line behind me.

13. In the checkout if you hit me with your cart I WILL hit you back, or at least try to fart.

14. If you can't control your screaming kids in the checkout, don't be surprised when I grab Advil and put it with your stuff. You gave me the headache, you can pay for it. And NO I will not give you a coupon to use on it.

15. Lastly, do not pull out directly in front of me when leaving the parking lot, your car is probably worth more than mine.

you set it to not show anything else but you didn't delete the entries that were already there from the first 2 days.
that's why you are seeing entries in the public stream (and I am seeing your entries in the public stream).

to delete those, while in your User CP, click on Public Profile from the box on the left.
then hover your mouse over the first entry in the public stream.
an X will appear on the right side.
click on it and you will delete that entry.
repeat for each entry in the public stream.

now you will have deleted all the past entries.
and your settings will prevent any new entries.

that being said, the public profile is set so that whatever you can see in the public profile itself (not by clicking other things, but in the public profile pane itself) is what everyone else can see also.

so just remember, if you're seeing the activity stream, others are being able to see it too.

hope that helps!

p.s. i think it's time to change my sig and post the activity stream changing info in there, whatcha think? people are finding out in dribs and drabs and everyone is so confused.

It's an indoor fountain (this one). (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EFVQDC/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details) Very quiet and the kitties started using it within the first few hours -- even my most skittish one.

Hi everybody!!!:woot::wave2:

We use it to make palascinta (Hungarian crepe) filled with apricot preserves. Here (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bbq-with-bobby-flay/hungarian-crepes-palacsinta-recipe/index.html) is a recipe close to my grandmother's.
I love them! I call them palacinki (Polish), Mom used to make them on Fridays for us. She would spread sour cream and then jelly/jam on them and roll up like a blintze. So good!
you set it to not show anything else but you didn't delete the entries that were already there from the first 2 days.
that's why you are seeing entries in the public stream (and I am seeing your entries in the public stream).

to delete those, while in your User CP, click on Public Profile from the box on the left.
then hover your mouse over the first entry in the public stream.
an X will appear on the right side.
click on it and you will delete that entry.
repeat for each entry in the public stream.

now you will have deleted all the past entries.
and your settings will prevent any new entries.

that being said, the public profile is set so that whatever you can see in the public profile itself (not by clicking other things, but in the public profile pane itself) is what everyone else can see also.

so just remember, if you're seeing the activity stream, others are being able to see it too.

hope that helps!

p.s. i think it's time to change my sig and post the activity stream changing info in there, whatcha think? people are finding out in dribs and drabs and everyone is so confused.
That would be a big help, thanks gg!

For those of you who aren't FB friends with me so haven't seen this on my wall:

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail, and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him what? (Oh, man, this is so bad, it's good.) A super callused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Neighbor had company over to watch football Sunday. He ordered pizzas and hot wings from Dominos. Thirty six dollars worth. He ate one slice of pizza and picked up a second one. He sees something that doesn't look right and picks at it.

It's a bandaid with bloody cotton gauze stuck to it.:vomit::vomit:

He calls Dominos and they offer to replace his pizza...ugh...no. So they offer to return his money and sent a driver out with the thirty six dollars.

Question????Should he drop it? Should he contact corporate, the state health inspector, the EPA, Ghostbusters?

I would say report it. What if a kid ate it without looking? Or what if band-aid wearer had a transmittable disease?

I would love christmas ideas for teenage dd-15 (crafts/scrapbooking, history, politics, dogs bunnies goats anything adorably cute, science, wants to be teacher when grows up)

and just last week "adopted" ds-13 who I don't know well (he likes video games, which he has and he's a computer/technology geek, not sports) (he's extremely shy, yet a people pleaser, sensitive, very emotionally internal)(he has money to buy whatever he would want, yet no love and emotional support from his own family) I know it prolly sounds like I am kidding but I am not :( yes we plan on spending lots of quality time doing fun stuff

Does your DD-15 have any special hobbies or love any certain book/movie?

I would say the health department. I think they would take it more seriously than Corporate because Corporate probably gets a lot of people trying to make stuff up for lawsuits. If there's a band-aid on a pizza it's likely that there are other health code violations.

Bought my first woot shirt today. :woot: DD wanted it for her former math teacher.
Gift ideas for your DD:
Science: How about one of those little solar kits that you put together to make a grasshopper or other creature like this HERE (http://www.amazon.com/OWI-Frightened-Grasshopper-Kit-Powered/dp/B000QX3NYG/ref=sr_1_5?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1321476959&sr=1-5) .... I'm not sure if it would be too beneath her age-wise though.
Scrapbooking: Wacky scissors if she doesn't already have them and maybe some stickers, etc. for her sweet sixteenth?
History: A world map poster? A magazine subscription to something like Nat Geo, American Heritage or Smithsonian Magazine?
Or you could splurge on an e-reader and pack it full of science and history books. :)

:wave2: Can't believe I went a whole day without checking SD. Been catching up on FB and email; amazing how fast they both pile up -- faster than junk mail! Yet I go through all my junk mail, too, eventually. :coverlaf:

Busy and tired taking care of Mom. Lots involved in "24-hour supervision." I'm grateful at least that she is in her right mind, if forgetful, and that I don't have the heartaches and hassles that go along with Alzheimer's.

Hope you're all having a decent pillaging week and getting ready for a yummy Thanksgiving. I'm doing a maple-glazed turkey on the grill and might make this as a side dish. (http://beta.abc.go.com/shows/the-chew/recipes/Thanksgiving-Michael-Symon-Fried-Brussels-Sprouts-Walnuts-Capers) I have discovered "The Chew," possibly the only TV show that might be worth turning on the set while the sun is still up!

I need help deciding whether or not I did good on a deal or not, can any of y'all help me out PLEASE??

I had planned on buying the $199.99 Xbox 4GB Console w/Kinect +$50 WM GC on Thursday evening.

However Amazon had a Lightning Deal for $299.98, same bundle but with a $100 Amazon Credit.

Now here's where I'm trying to figure if my deal was good or not. I used $75 in Amazon GCs I had accumulated from Swagbucks so that lowered the Amazon price to $224.98 and I'll still be getting the $100 Amazon Credit which essentially makes the bundle $124.98. Should I have bought the WM bundle instead and after $50 WM GC the bundle costs $166.49 and still had the $75 Amazon GCs to use for games/toys?

If you were in my shoes would you feel like you did good with the Amazon deal or would you have waited for the WM deal? I'd greatly appreciate any advice or input :)

Hi everybody!!!:wave::wave2:
Can't keep up with all the deal threads. Miss you all.
LL, on the news tonight they were doing a piece on the online deals/emails being sent out this week. They suggested checking the prices "before jumping on a deal" (their words).
They suggested 2 sites to find other dealers prices, etc. One was google and the other was 'price____' .com. So sorry I can't remember the other word of the site. Hopefully someone else will be familiar with such sites. Maybe you can go to one of these sights and compare prices. I'm sure you did well, as you probably had a good idea of pricing.

Happy Thanksgiving, Eveyone!!!!!

Its 'pricegrabber.com'

I think you should call it a good deal, since you have a confirmed system and didn't have to brave the crowds. Don't undervalue the time you would have put in to scoring on in-store or fighting server crashes at home! Maybe use the $100 for a compatible USB to expand the memory, if you plan on more intensive games.

I paid 2.99 for a 6 oz. bag the other day, and this week the same bag is twice that price! I knew I should have grabbed a couple, but it seemed so expensive at the time ...

:wave2: So how did everyone's Thanksgiving and BF weekend go?

We had 15 people, 2 turkeys, 6 desserts, and 6" of snow still on the ground (so we didn't do our planned hike). Can't believe I didn't think to get out my snowshoes. My sister actually skied down the hill to do my mom's morning routine on Wednesday, because her car wouldn't make it! By Thursday, vehicles with sufficient clearance could get up the hill, so dinner was no problem.

I brined my turkey, then slow-roasted it with a cheesecloth blanket soaked in butter, maple syrup, apple cider, bulbing fennel, lemon and spices. Best turkey I've done yet. There is an entire breast side in the freezer that will be a nice dinner for the three of us sometime, and I picked off leftovers, soup bits and cat food, then made 2+ quarts of stock from the carcass in my pressure cooker. HIGHLY recommend this! Made rich, gelling stock in an hour. :eat:

 George! Well my turkey came out just fine, but definitely not as moist as last year's turkey. It's okay though everything was just perfect with just the 3 of us for the day, no rushing to feed everyone, minimal dishes, etc .:D However, from now on, I will be using a daggum 5 gallon bucket from now on and will NOT be messing with any bags or anything like that EVER AGAIN to brine :nono:

Turns out that the Amazon deal I did for the Xbox was the best decision I could have made. All I read on FB Friday evening and early Saturday morning was how bad the WMs were. I know that's no surprise, but it seemed like this was one of the more violent years around here.

I hope everybody else had a great Thanksgiving and successful black friday shopping day

So did everyone pillage on BF? Shop at home? Do Cyber Monday?

My BF report: Intended to leave at midnight and be home mid-morning, but didn't leave the house until 5:30 a.m. Guess that was the best thing I could have done -- missed all the lines and craziness (except the checkout at Kohl's -- an hour!), ran into friends and relatives to chat with, got a fun new hat (a puppy with paws that make a scarf), got everything I went for and then some. :woot:

On the down side, I bought myself a new hand mixer because I thought I had given mine away when I got another one I ended up not liking. When I was getting Christmas decorations out of the storage closet, guess what I found on a shelf? And I can't return it because it put me over $50 to get Kohl's Cash!

And also Kohl's-related, I had $75 in K GCs, but forgot to use them and put $75 on my credit card instead.

Guess that 1-hour checkout line did my brain in.

But I did get 2 of the Kohl's Cares books and the stuffed animals to go with them for my sister's grandson, born in October. They're featuring Nancy Tillman's books ("On the Night You Were Born," etc.) -- beautiful!

Believe it or not, I never looked at the CVS ad or thread until Friday night. When I saw it ... :omg: So I had to go out again on Saturday evening and hit RA and CVS!

:wave2: Since it's holiday baking season, I wanted to share a couple of recipes here so I can refer folks to them!

Orange-Cranberry Two-Bite Scones with White Chocolate Glaze

I tried an Andes Candy scone recipe from a card I found in the grocery store. It was awful. Just horrible. Downright disgusting. But then I got to thinking ... if I replaced the Andes with cranberries, and added some orange flavoring, and used white chocolate instead of regular ...

2-1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
pinch of salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
3 Tbsp granulated sugar
1-1/2 sticks unsalted butter
1/2 cup dried cranberries, chopped slightly in food processor
1 tsp plus 1/2 tsp orange extract
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup white baking chips or chopped white chocolate

Preheat oven to 375 F.

Mix dry ingredients. Cut butter in with a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse meal. (This can also be done in a food processor, using half the flour mixture. Add to the remaining flour mixture in the bowl before adding cream.)

Sprinkle 1 tsp orange extract over cranberries. Stir berries into dry mixture.

Add cream and 1/2 tsp orange extract to dry ingredients. Mix lightly with fingers just until the dough holds together. Wrap in plastic and chill about 1/2 hour.

Roll out into a 6" x 8" rectangle. Cut into 2-inch squares; cut each square diagonally in half to create 24 triangles. (A mezzaluna or pizza cutter works really well for this.)

Dough slab, cut into 24 scones

Place scones on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake 13-15 minutes or until golden brown and puffed. Remove from oven and let cool completely.

Melt chips; drizzle in stripes over cooled scones.

Based on Andes mint scones recipe: http://www.tootsie.com/rec_scones.php

Another family recipe. We always assumed it came from my father's German/Austrian family, but doing a web search to confirm spelling of the name, I found an almost identical recipe in four places. One of them was from the poster's mother, who was born the same year as my mom, so now I'm thinking maybe they both found it in a magazine!

Fingerklatschen

2/3 cup soft butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
1/2 tsp almond extract
1-3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
Powdered sugar
Currant and apple jellies (or other colorful preserves)

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks. Beat until light.

Add almond, flour, salt. Mix well.

Shape into 1" balls. Arrange on cookie sheet. Press shallow well into each with thumb or wooden spoon handle.

Bake at 325 F for 25 minutes. Do not brown.

Remove from oven; press again.

Cool; fill centers with 1/2 to 1 tsp jelly; dust with powdered sugar.

Makes about 3 dozen.

My mom copied this recipe from TV back in the days before recording and rewind, and she didn't catch the name, so we've always called them TV cookies. I've since seen them called Toffee Squares.

TV Cookies (Toffee Squares)

1/2 lb. softened butter (2 sticks)
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Beat together butter, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla.

Add flour and salt. Mix well. Batter will be stiff.

Spread in ungreased 10" x 15" jelly roll pan. It won't look like enough dough, but it will cover the pan.

Bake at 350 F for 12-15 minutes.

Remove from oven; sprinkle chocolate chips on top; return to oven for a minute or two to melt.

Remove from oven. Spread chocolate evenly. Sprinkle nuts on top.

Cool completely before cutting into squares or diamonds.

^^ How's your Mama?
:wave2: Hi, tn! Mom is doing really well. She's eating real meals, learned she likes yogurt, and is doing chair exercises with my sister every morning, using small weights. :strong:

I got up with her this morning to let my sister have the day for Christmas shopping, so I did the exercises with her. I got tired!

One more recipe. I posted Sal's Atomic Rum Balls (http://archive.slickdeals.net/showpost.php?p=25332814&postcount=1500), but I've (as usual) made some changes to the original. Here's my version:

Mary's Atomic Rum Balls

1 sleeve (5.25 oz) Anna's Thins in whatever flavor you like
1 cup pecans, walnuts or almonds
1 cup powdered sugar
2 Tbsp powdered cocoa (or other dry flavoring, like tea -- see below)
2 Tbsp Karo syrup
1/2 cup Bacardi 151 rum (you can use another, or even flavored rum, but then they won't be Atomic!)
Powdered sugar for coating

Grind cookies in food processor. Dump into mixing bowl.

Grind nuts in food processor. Dump into mixing bowl.

Add powdered sugar and cocoa (if using). Mix. Add the Karo and rum and mix thoroughly. If too thin, add more cookie crumbs and/or powdered sugar.
Refrigerate overnight.

Roll into 3/4-inch balls (about a teaspoon each). Roll in powdered sugar and place in single layer in airtight container. Allow to age a week or two for best flavor.

Some good flavor combos:

Anna's cappuccino thins, pecans, cocoa
Anna's chocolate chip thins, walnuts, cocoa
Anna's ginger thins, pecans, cocoa (or chai)
Anna's chocolate mint thins, walnuts, cocoa
Anna's almond cinnamon thins, almonds, 2 tsp. chai tea (loose, or open two teabags); spiced rum (= sub-atomic)

I have only noticed them at wags and tried the ginger thins, they are awesome - like a super thin cookie with the crunch of a cracker.

Exactly. They say Anna's in big letters on the package, and they come in lemon, ginger, chocolate mint, cappuccino, blueberry, orange ... great with tea! I also crumble them and sprinkle the crumbs on ice cream, then stick one whole cookie on top. The package is small, one sleeve, and there are also double packs. Run about $1 per single pack at places like Christmas Tree Shops.

http://www.annasthins.ca/

ETA: Hmmmm ... the website lists only four flavors. I wonder if they've cut the others out, or if they're making them as "special editions."

No I didn't go out after Christmas shopping.

I did many accomplishments today. I learned how to email someone to their telephone and it makes it a text. (You need to know their phone carrier and phone # off course.)

And then I walked in the house and my dh gave me a ipod touch for no reason, so now I am trying to learn that.

Also my dh asked me to make him coffee. He recently got a night shift job. So I am making my first pot of coffee tonight. He told me amounts he wanted. (I hate coffee and the smell of coffee, that is why I have never made coffee)

Oh, and I attached a file to an email today.

If I didn't say it here, I am sooo technologically challenged that the reason my dh knows how to make a computer by scratch is that he has had to fix mine so much after I screw it up. And you don't even wanna see me with one of those fancy tv remotes. I have messed up the tv many times.

My adopted son bought me an "in car fm transmitter" for Christmas and I had to ask him what it was for. In fact I just had to look at the package to see what it is called. But they did teach me how to use it. :bleh:

I ventured to Target late afternoon the day after and while there werent too many people there-it was a bit bare. Went to Wal-mart yesterday and found ziploc bags and solo plates which is what I was mostly after-and was reminded that I hate going there-----cashier took forever going over my coupons.
Returned some stuff back there this morning and had a terrific returns clerk that was super efficient-and found 2 lonely rolls of the red saran wrap_would normally wait for 75% off but this year stuff is flying out the door plus I dont think the stores had as much inventory as in years past.

ducky, congrats on the mad new skills!

I stopped at RA on my way home from Mom's optometrist appt. today. Spent almost $50 OOP! :bigeye:

All Christmas was 50% off; all I got was some of the $1 stocking stuffers @ .50 and the Merry Fishmas chocolate fish for my nephew, who spent the summer salmon fishing in Alaska. Thought about it before Christmas, but was too cheap to buy it at 20% off (Gold)! :coverlaf:

Rest of the stuff I needed/wanted, including Tena, Dr Pepper (for New Year's party), Theraflu, Cortaid, gum, Mentos and reading glasses. Got 21 UPs and will do the Cortaid 7.99 rebate.

I don't need any Christmas decor, wrapping, etc., so will not make much of an effort to hit the stores. Family dinner tonight, going away for the weekend, not much time anyway.

OMG, I made a new recipe tonight. Based it on this (http://www.food.com/recipe/crock-pot-cream-cheese-ranch-chicken-147494?sni_mid=24529&sni_rid=24529.311.743617), but adapted it for the pressure cooker. It's Cream Cheese Chicken. The sauce is sort of like an alfredo, but not as cheesy. I like it better!

I'm including my version for both crock pot and pressure cooker.

Cream Cheese Chicken

Serve over buttered egg noodles, rice or your favorite cooked grain(s).

1 Tbsp olive or vegetable oil
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Ground sage
Dried garlic & parsley blend
Paprika or ground annato
1 Tbsp butter
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 (10-3/4 ounce) can reduced-fat cream of chicken soup
8 ounce brick light cream cheese, cubed
1/2 cup chicken broth
Herbes de Provence

Pressure cooker version:

Heat oil in pot of pressure cooker. Add chicken. Sprinkle with sage, garlic/parsley and paprika. Saute lightly (do not turn). Make sure there is at least 1/4" of liquid in pan; add water if necessary, then cover and bring up to pressure.

Cook for 10-15 minutes. Release pressure. Remove chicken to warm platter.

Pour off pan juices and set aside.

Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in pressure cooker pan, along with minced garlic; saute slightly. Add cream of chicken soup, cream cheese cubes, broth, pan juices and herbes de Provence. Stir on medium heat until smooth.

Return chicken to pot (cut into cubes if desired), spoon sauce over and warm through.

Crock pot version:

Wash and dry chicken breasts and place them evenly in pot. Sprinkle with sage, garlic/parsley and paprika. Cover and cook on Low for 4 hours.

Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in a medium saucepan along with minced garlic; saute slightly. Add cream of chicken soup, cream cheese cubes, chicken broth and herbes de Provence. Stir on medium heat until smooth.

Add mixture to crock pot, stir a little, cover again and continue to cook on low for 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Cut chicken into cubes before serving, if desired.

All the people here are so wonderful in helping others. You are very smart. Please HELP me!
I was in CVS. The manager called the police. She said that I was stealing. This was my first time in CVS and near my house. The police were rough. They came in, handcuffed me, and took me outside to the squad car. The female patted me down. All I had in my pockets was change. They asked if they could look in my bags. I said no. They threw me in the back seat of a smelly squadcar with locked doors. They searched my bags, and found nothing. But, I was told the manager had banned me from the store!(The police wrote this) The police let me go but told me to get off of the property of CVS, or I would be charged with trespassing. Then they drove off. I called CVS customer service(1-800-shop cvs) but they weren't helpful. They said the store mgr. was advised by police to ban me. Well,I have it in writing, that the police wrote that "the store manager does not want you on business property" Today, I got a call from a cvs corporate person, although I do not know his title. I asked that the ban be lifted, since I an innocent. He said OK , and I asked him to write a letter stating this. He saId no, and he would not give a reason. He said it was unnecessary. I said it was important to me, because I could be shopping, and have the police called again. He refused, and told me to have a nice day. He was very mean and rude. The store says police recommended the ban, but they never went in the store after I was let go.They merely drove off. Common sense would tell you , that if a person is innocent, the police vare not going to have involvement advising a store . The police said the store manager wants the ban. I do not want a ban on my record, because I am a law abiding citizen. The police department also tells me that there is no police report since I committed no crime. I am so ashamed and humiliated that friendss and neighbors saw me in this position, like a violent criminal. And there bis no written proof that I did not commit a crime, I begged one of the police officers to write this, but he wouyld not Not once has anyone said sorry . What can I do? HELP!!

I read akageorge's post with a link here in the RA chat thread. When I worked in retail, they had to see you hide an item and carry it outside the store without paying before you could be accused of anything, otherwise you could sue them.
I don't know if this is only in my state or national policy.
but it sounds like you have something actionable. I have no idea who to contact from there. I have phobia of courtrooms and will do whatever I can to avoid being in one so I'd probably move if this happened to me:blush3:
Saying "sorry" doesn't begin to convey the depth to which this disturbs me. It doesn't sound like something that could or should happen in the USA.

Do what what we'd do in NYC--sue. Sounds like an open and shut case to me. At least have an attorney call the store and the police and tell them you are suing. Call yourself and tell them. At least you can make some money out of this.

Oh, and you can only do this if you weren't doing anything wrong there so think over your actions and then go make big money.

Adapted this recipe from one by a Facebook friend (who's an actual chef, so you know his was probably better, but when you live half an hour from the nearest grocery store, you have to work with what you've got).

Wine Glazed Chicken

2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in half (or 4 small) (or 4 chicken thighs, bone-in with skin)
1 Tbsp butter
1 Tbsp olive oil
Pinch salt
1 tsp ground sage
2 tsp dried rosemary leaves, crushed
3/4 cup plus 1/4 cup dry red wine

Pound chicken (if boneless) to tenderize and flatten slightly.

Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet. Sprinkle 1 tsp rosemary onto oil.

Add chicken to the skillet; season with salt, sage and remaining rosemary.

Cook 10-15 minutes on each side until brown (15-20 minutes if using thighs).

Add 3/4 cup of wine to the skillet, 1/4 cup at a time, allowing to simmer and adding more when it evaporates (about 15 minutes altogether).

Remove chicken from the skillet and stir in 1/4 cup of wine, scraping the drippings from bottom of the pan. Bring back to boil.

When liquid thickens to a glaze, pour over chicken and serve.

If she's someone special, what about a Hallmark recordable book? It doesn't have to be Valentine's related, and you read the book to her. My SIL and Brother did this for their grandbaby (my great nephew), as he'll be able to hear their voice even after they are gone.

So I just found this thread the other day and I already have plans to make several recipes in the wiki. :)
Thanks to all who have shared recipes. Tonight my son is out watching nba and my dog is on a sleepover at my cousins and I've been busy Blog hopping. One blog mentioned peanut butter frosting and my mouth watered. I very rarely crave peanut butter. Anyway, I decided to satisfy my sweet tooth and make a quick & easy treat...Rice Krispie Treats! I've made these treats at least 100 times!!!! So I get my 3tbsp of butter in pot, measure my 6 cups of cereal, and instead of putting the marshmallows in the pot, I accidentally toss the cereal in the pot with the melted butter. I quickly grab my plastic colander from the sink & scoop out as much cereal as I can. Of course I pulled the pan off the burner so I wouldn't burn the cereal BUT I put the plastic colander on the hot burner instead while quickly removing cereal. I toss the marshmallows in the pot but they aren't melting, so I scoop some of them out and put in a bowl & microwave for 30 seconds. In the meantime, I'm trying to scrape the plastic off of my burner & get rid of the stinky plastic smell. My buzzer beeps & I open the microwave to find my marshmallows have GROWN & spread all over the microwave. So I have a big huge mess in my kitchen and my dog who LOVES krispie treats is gone for the night. At least I was able to make rice krispie balls out of my BIG Mess. Yep, I'm Blonde alright!!! :lmao:

Yep, I felt like I was repeating something from an episode from I Love Lucy.
 Sounds like an eventful evening! I like the easier route of just buying them at the store :D I wish I could, but I'm a Rice Krispie Snob and have to eat them warm. When I used to work 12 hr days I'd buy those for my son. I remember buying "Institutional sized" Full sheet cake pans of those for class treats when I couldn't keep up. I used to send a class treat once a week for a few years.
Blondey my friend, I can totally understand. I have had one of those weeks (well 2 weeks) at work.
And then well, against my wishes my dh goes out and buys a $500 puppy last night.

So these are for me, giving them to myself :flowers2:

Well it's nice to see your post NoDuck!! I've missed your presence. What kind of a puppy do you have? Too bad I used all my Iams MQ's or I'd send you some. If you've been stocking up on Tena pads maybe you could figure out a way to use them for the puppy's accidents. It's been a long time since I potty trained a puppy. Awhile back Walgreens had puppy wet pads on clearance.Hopefully some Wags still have them on clearance. Good Luck!!!
I HOPE next week is better for you!!!
These are for you :flowers2: :flowers2: :flowers2:
Today I'm going to Target & get some ibuprofen, dental floss, scrubby sponges, paper towels, up2u gum & welch's jam.
I also have to hit some Wags & WM for Got2b products. We finally got a little snow here.

 Thanks for the laugh -- I needed that! I hope you weren't too :ranting:.

And guess what I'm craving now ...

Did somebody say recipes? Here's what I made for dinner tonight:

Texas Chicken Casserole

Olive oil
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 celery ribs, finely chopped
1 10.75-ounce can condensed cream of celery soup, undiluted
1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes
1-1/2 cups coarsely crushed Garden Salsa Sun Chips (about 1/3 of a bag)
6 to 8 ounces shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese

Saute the chicken breasts in olive oil, then remove from pan and cut into 1/2" to 1" pieces. Set aside.

In same pan, saute onion and celery in oil until crisp-tender.

Stir in the chicken, soup and tomatoes. Set soup can aside. (Do not rinse.)

Spread half the chips on the bottom of a 3-qt. casserole dish; top with half of the chicken mixture and half of the cheese.

Repeat layers. Fill soup can halfway with water (stir to catch any soup left in it) and pour evenly over casserole.

Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until bubbly. Serves 4 to 6.

 I'd call where he bought the puppy from and demand they take it back, but that's just me. Hope you can work something out. I love dogs more than anyone, but being expected to live with a pet you didn't want is way too much.

At least the boy knows better than to try to bring home another cat and surprise me with it. But he has food allergies and I have threatened to go buy a big bag of shrimp if that happens.

My old boss used feminine pads with the old elastic belt (kinda like a waist garter) Us old gals used them when "we became women", just remember to leave tail room!! What kind of puppy? I have some $5/1 Eukanuba puppy qs if you are wanting to try that brand of food, just drop me a PM. :)

Thank you all for the offers for dog food q's. I have a connection for free dog food.

For those wondering the puppy is a male German Shepard.
Well my dh has figured out he is not excited about the dog now and we may be selling him. It has stressed him out that I am not supportive and my dd hasn't been home to help. And the puppy seems to be a whiner so he hasn't gotten sleep. dd is home now and taking care of him tonight. He is a german shepard and I don't really care for that breed. I know everyone says they are great. I don't think I want that big and an agressive dog. (Previously we had a cocker spaniel) I know the time and commitment and don't think I want that right now is the reason why I don't want a dog. The fun will wear off and I know I'll be the one taking care of it.

Plus as the caring motherly woman I am I don't like the guilt of puppy eyes and wagging tail. "It's a beautiful day, lets go for a walk!" slobber slobber. and "whaa?, you are leaving me home again! I wanna go wherever it is you are going. Take me with you!"

It 100% depends on where he got the dog. If it was from a careful, reputable breeder (which I doubt since they didn't talk to all the family members first) then it shouldn't turn into an aggressive dog. If the puppy is doing a LOT of whining now, then it might be one of the nervous/fearful ones that could end up turning into lots of trouble.

The problem is that the good German shepherds are amazing, but most people don't realize the work needed to select, exercise, and train a good one so they end up with one of the bad ones through either bad nerves or a lack of exercise. I'm considering getting one, but I'm going to get a young adult so I know the hips and elbows are good and it's already mostly trained. The police dog rejects have too much energy for a normal pet household, so they are really hard to rehome.

I made the Texas Chicken Casserole and it is Yummy!!! Thanks so much for sharing. :)
I used a can of Rotel Diced Tomatoes with chilis instead of the Diced Tomatoes and I added a TBSP of Chile Verde cooking sauce (I always add that to Mexican dishes) I'm also glad that I saved 1/3 of the bag of Sun Chips to crush on top at serving for crunchy texture.
I will definitely make this recipe again!! :yummy:

I don't like peppers (any kind) or hot stuff, but you might enjoy the original recipe on Taste of Home. (http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/texan-ranch-chicken-casserole?pmcode=IMBD203S&_mid=2343221&_rid=2343221.941136.1343005) It uses those tomatoes with chilies, too.

We actually had the casserole two nights in a row and enjoyed it just as much the second time!

Been busy and gave up couponing for a while (except for the grocery store) because of all the extreme hopefuls in my area. Not worth the fight or paying for the paper anymore. I'm trying to focus on grad school.

Hope your mom is doing okay.

I can understand that. Our local paper went up in price, which often gets skimpy ads
And then my source for Chic Trib fell apart, so I have the sux going on. I am thankful for clippers and traders and "you know who you are" :lmao:

I don't have it that bad, its more of a problem finding stock to use the coupons on, or space for more shampoo and tooth paste. I've been getting by with clippers and printing coupons and think I'll just continue this way. I save money but spend a lot less time at it, plus less stress with making it to the store for the sales.

I'm going to make Iamnotaduck's Hamburger Stroganoff tonight.

I'm debating going to my favorite Wags and scooping up the extra stock of Poligrip & Melatonin. I rarely shop on Sunday and all the locals clear out the food items, so if I want the $1 Duncan Hines Brownie mixes I'll have to get them today. Decisions Decisions.... I should go because I'm also contemplating having some drinks...it's 5:00 somewhere!!

Nope, Thursday. Mom's is the 29th, and she'll be 90, so we're planning a party for the 24th. She doesn't think there's any need for a party, but I told her the fact she's not dead yet is cause for celebration. :coverlaf:
