I'm wondering if this is a generational thing. I would never do this either, but both my stepdaughters (who were NOT raised fulltime by me...ahem) went BF shopping with me and proceeded to open up every color of Revlon TopSpeed in the CVS and paint their nails, each finger with a different color, to determine which shades they liked.

By the time I was in the aisle to notice, they were just finishing up. I was HORRIFIED. They are 17 and 22, so well beyond the parenting window, and they're not my daughters anyway. But good grief. I would never let my kids do this.

:bigeye: the problem with opening & using nailpolish & such is that it is now contaminated.

I've never had this problem at any of my outside sales.

I'm 40 and don't do it, nor would I allow my 16 to to as well. When she was little and I would take her shopping all food, snacks, toys, you name it stayed sealed in the package until we paid for it.

Idk if it is generational or just lack of common sense & respect!

Oh and just a note when y'all are out shopping, never take the first item on the shelf for this reason. I always grab the 3rd back. :coverlaf:

3rd back is hilariuos to me!!

I noticed that people were sniffing or trying the first one. Then they would grab behind that one to buy. I have been mixing them up after someone opens the first one for years now. I always give a little smirk after someone grabs the one i just put in 2nd or 3rd. I see it happen abiut five times every weekend.... its like my own little shell game that i win every single time.:)

Well guys, I can now add myself to the infamous list of those who have had the cops called on them for their sales! LOL! :)

I had my last sale the first weekend in December, and today a detective with the local sheriff's office knocked on my door, and told me that they had recieved an anonymous call about my yard sales, and had seen the ad on Craigslist and given the amount of stuff I was selling, the caller was concerned it might be stolen. I tried my best not to laugh and offered to let the officer see my accordian file of reciepts. Told him I was a couponer, and he said he figured it was something like that, but just needed to investigate so that they had a resolution to the call, and information if I was reported again. He declined my offer to dig through my reciepts. :) I did ask him if I was okay to continue selling my stash, and was told point blank I could keep on selling my stockpile.
That happened to me too. Only the person that called the police was complaining that I was selling medicine and it could be poisoned (even though all the bottles are sealed). People sell food all the time and that could be poisoned too!
Nobody has called the cops on me yet(i have 4 who live in my tiny neighborhood) but I have had the manager of a publix show up at my sale and a manager at wags told me someone called them about my sale too. Seriously people need to butt out of other people's lives.
I haven't had anyone call the police but geez that is awful that people feel they need to make it their business! I did have a woman reply to my CL post about how appalling it was that I was selling stuff I got for free and that I should be donating it all, shame on me. I didn't bother even replying to her though I was tempted to for a while.
Last sale for the entire year...having major problems with people opening lotion, squirting out body wash when smelling, etc...I never thought that I'd need signs that say "please do not open products for sanitary reasons." Also, for those who are bilingual, is this correct in Spanish? (my husband is at home and I don't want to call and bother him, he has the babies) "por favor, no abra los productos por razones sanitarias."

Do these people do this at Walmart?!?!?! Never in a million years would I open a brand new product in the store unless I had already paid for it.
I've had more of a problem with this at the last two sales than any time in the previous year. Thanks for the translation, I'm going to make English and Spanish signs to post for our next sale.

There was a special on CNBC that highlighted store theft recently. I'm not sure exactly when it aired..... I saw it on a plane ride and was telling my sister about it and she said she saw the show on tv.

It specifically mentioned wags..... on average wags loses $250 per store (every store, every day) to shoplifters and then another segment showed things being stolen off a dock and resold in pop/pop stores, craigslist, flea markets, etc.

Talked about baby formula being the number one item and how money is being funnelled into terrorists who buy weapons, etc.

Stores don't want to file a claim cuz their insurance will go up but apparently happening quite a lot.

I kind of fell asleep during the show and I was so tired but as I recall the show did say things were being stolen from stores with police on the lookout to catch rings of thieves reselling stolen goods.

Might be why people are calling the cops when they see garage sales with lots of new items at way under retail.

Good Morning Everyone,

Thinking of taking a run trip this weekend, has anyone here every set up at the Berlin Farmer's Market in NJ? Never been there and not sure what to expect this time of year.

Thank you Sirol

I would say at WM more than at other places, but this happens everywhere. :(

I managed a Bath and Body Works for 10 years. We had testers for almost every single product in the store. Yet people still felt the need to ignore the bottle with the bright red TESTER sticker on it, and squeeze and/or open a perfectly new bottle. My Damange/MOS sheet was almost constantly full from these jerks.

I love testers, I get to test and it's free! :P Can't believe people open new bottles when there are testers. :(

Best thing ever was watching a lady take one of my bottles and squirt some into her hand and rub it in.... And rub.... And rub.... And then look around with this weird look on her face

All while I am laughing my ASS off because I know dang well that the "lotion" she tried out was actually body wash!!!! Some people, sheesh!

LOL

DH is pretty OCD about certain things, so he tape down lots of different items that people would otherwise pop open to smell. :D haha... I personally don't care too much as long as they don't squeeze and make a mess, if they flip open the cap/lid and take a sniff, fine, but I do get annoyed with teenage girls (or kids) who open, squeeze and make a big mess. It's funny to watch DH get upset though, lol, he also tape down b/c lots of stuff we store horizontally even though we know it's best to do it vertically but we just don't have the space...

I saw a similar article recently that was discussing theft at Target, and showed people clearing shelves of Tylenol and other hba items. I never realized that those were high theft items! Another high theft item- Norelco razors.

The worst is lipstick, the nerve of someone to open it and test it on their hand, gross, Luckily now most of the lipsticks are sealed in wrapping! I had one woman spray axe on her, buy it then try and return it 5 minutes later, um no sorry, it was a big argument, I normally would've let it go because I wouldn't want to offend my mob of customers, but there wasn't anyone there so I gave it to her good! I had on group open a package of batteries for a toy they bought at another sale, um hello are you kidding me, I told them you are paying for those batteries, and they said chill out we're just seeing if they fit this toy, me: well your buying them no matter if they fit or not, unbelievable!

Last time I had a gs, I had a guy who wanted to open a box of polident ($1 is what I had them marked at........ sells for $1.99 and we got it FARR from wags minus a $1 coupon) to try out. LOL! Told him NOOOOOOOOO! Then he bought every box I had..... a dozen for $10. Hubby says........ well......... he prob would have paid $12 and I said but he DID pay $10 and I got paid to take them and no one else was ever buying them. Take the $10 and be happy.

Another guy bought a glucose monitor which he came back to return a while later. Hubby felt sorry for him so he let him exchange it......... for some baby ASA I think and THEN some woman comes back a couple hours after she bought stuff and says I charged her too much and wants money back.

Well too bad for HER she didn't go to my hubby cuz she had to go home to get more money, had more than her $50 would buy so she kept removing things and I remember EXACTLY every item she DID buy cuz it was sitting by my feet waiting for her to return with cash along with another customer who wanted some of those specific items.

Hubby couldn't figure out how I could remember but I did get her to admit part of what she claimed was not right which negated her credibility. Hubby wanted to "settle" half way and I refused. NO WAY! She had only good stuff that was a smoking deal....... so much that others would have bought them had she not returned.

Come on............. who takes stuff out of their pile cuz they don't have enough money (after going home to get the money), watches the gs person count out how much they owe (twice), pays, takes the stuff home (apparently not checking what they really do owe) and then returns a couple hours later to claim I overcharged and they want money back? She lived around the block and was walking back home with her loot........ not going to more sales.

In my book.......... only someone who figures I won't possibly remember what she had and cave in. I STILL remember what she had......... lol! Don't remember her face tho........ lol!

That was October. A one-day sale, made about $500.

But I had another Jan. 14, one-day. made $800! And that was a cold, rainy day.

What do you think I should price some Internet Security Software I got free after Staples Easy Rebates? They are made by TrendMicro- some are Internet Security and some are Maximum Security- both 1 PC's & 3 PC's. Regular retail $49.99-$69.99. I was thinking $10 for the 1 PC and $15 or $20 for the 3 PC. Do you think they will sell ok or are they one of those products that just sit?

FWIW I have some of these disks and was thinking of posting them on fleabay, but after a little bit of research it seems like it is pretty hit and miss as to whether you will get somebody that negs you for not including the UPC, etc., so that they can get the rebate (even on the clearly marked sales stating that it's just the disk and activation code without the box/upc/etc.). I ultimately decided not to list them yet and they've been sitting in a box for a while.

I'd probably do $2, but my prices are usually less than most.

I'm in major need of a sale after collecting since October...can't wait for some good weather!

Advice on selling the trial size packs of Tide? I'm sure I can sell some of them for $.50 each but most of my customers are looking for cheap detergent, not overpriced trial size packs. Would it be better to sell the little boxes of 24 trial size packs for the same price that I'd normally sell a similarly sized Tide for...or is it worth it to just price them each at $.50 and let them sell slowly?

That's unfortunate that people would do that even though it's cleary stated :(

For the Staples rebates, you don't have to cut off the UPC's.

I price all my trial stuff at $.50 or 3/$1. Sells great, and even at 3/$1, would still be more than I could get out of a similar sized tide.

FWIW, my trial stuff sells great, though I have nowhere near the initial stock that some of you guys have.

I'd sell them for $.50 each and promote them as travel size to take on vacation with you. Just the right size if you have to "wash something by hand." Plus, it packs easily.

I had a little yard sale yesterday. It was more of a regular yard sale with a bunch of my old stuff around my place and of course some of my couponing excess. Well this woman comes over and asks me if Im a couponer and I tell her yes. So she tells me she is one too and tells me how she has so many potato chips in her garage yada yada. I tell her I would love to go to another couponers yard sale to get a bunch of stuff I havent got. Then she shops around and when shes ready to pay you wouldnt believe what she was buying from me... toothpaste. 6 tubes of it!! Now I wonder if shes got any potato chips in her garage

Hello all! I'm back after taking an 8 month (or so) break. We moved and then moved again and are now settling down finally. Trying to get back into stockpile sales because I think I'm in a great area for it now. :) Scrolling back through old posts and trying to catch up. Just started shopping heavily again this last couple weeks. Hopefully I can get enough stuff built up for a mid-summer sale!

Thanks all for continuing to contribute!

Depends on your demographics.

Before hairspray & mousse sold best for me.

I would skip the taming lotion unless you know people that use it or you could just get a few and see how it goes but most people don't mess with that stuff.

Gel is kind of hit or miss too. Surprisingly enough, a lot of people that you think use gel actually use hairspray. But again, you could get a few and see how it goes.

Another thing I do is try to watch what people have been buying. (i.e. if there is one or two left of something on a shelf where there was once 4-5, get those because people will probably buy them!)

I used to wait until the week of my sale to start doing this, but my new methodology is everything gets tagged the same day it comes in the door. I've found I'm a lot less stressed when setting up, if I bring it home, unbag it, tag it, and then put it away.

I also had a friend build me wall shelving units for the garage. I am in love with these things! :heart:I have 4 huge cabinets - more to come later... but 4 will have to do for now... too many other home improvement projects in the works. These cabinets are awesome! 3 shelves each, and enough room on top for paper boxes full of stuff that I don't want to use valuable shelf space for, like all the free after RR OTC med crappola from Wags/CVS. I think it's going to make set up for my next sale a breeze, too. Just take down from the shelves and put on the tables.

I also had him hang pegboard underneath the cabinets. It's just the right height for hanging pesky toothbrushes, razors, etc. My boyfriend jokes that it looks like a Walmart in my garage! :lmao:

Would love to see pics if you have any. I am thinking about making some changes in my garage. I always set up on the drive since our old garage is so dark....but takes hours to set up and rain is always an issue. Would like to have everything ready to go. We don't use the garage for my car....just storage. I just need it to be more organized.

What would you charge for them?? I can easily sell bodywash all day long for $2, but never sold bar soap.
I've had the 2 pks before and had those at $2 or 3 for $5. For the 4 pks, I'd probably do $3.50 or 2 for $6. HTHs

Most of the time I can't even give away the meters. I don't think I've ever sold a single one and always donate them to the local health clinic. Which brings up another problem, know how hard it is for an individual to GIVE away 150 meters? So many questions, so many questions!

Hmm....good to know! I have sold some in the past, but it's been more than 2 years, and I can't remember at what price I sold them. I sold all but two of them (I had about 15), and those two didn't sell simply because they were expired by a month or two. Maybe it's a regional difference. I am in the deep south, also known as the "stroke belt" with diabetes as the buckle to that belt, so maybe I have a different clientele. Thanks for the info, though.

If I get a bunch, I'll have to mail them to you! Rather someone get some use out of them than to pillage the batteries out of them and throw them away!

That could be the difference, my meters didn't have the strips. When I do get them with strips, I pillage those and give to a diabetic friend, who really can't afford $1 a test and will go without, then again, she'll go without her meds sometimes and even if she does have strips, she won't use them because she knows she'll be way too high.

Thanks for pointing out that these particular meters have no strips, though. Thankfully, they don't cost anything OOP, after the $10 coupon, but still I might have the same problem with moving these, so no more of these are coming home...

I've sold a few. I have them priced at $5, but anyone that shows an interest I offer a deal for multiples - like $2 or $3 each.
Also donated a bunch to the food pantry.

Could never sell meters regardless if strips came with them or not. It always seemed like people had their particular brand and didn't want to try anything else, even if they were only $1!

For those of you who shop RA...what are you planning to do with all the reading glasses? I have a feeling these will be another item to sit and collect dust but am open to pricing suggestions.

If you could get the diapers below for the following prices to resell - would you? And what would you price them for? I've only taken advantage of the smaller "jumbo" packs in the past. No experience with pricing/selling the boxes.

Pampers Swaddlers-Size 2 (84 ct)- $9.49
Pampers Swaddlers-Size 1 (96 ct)- $9.49

Any help is appreciated!

Ehhhh...probably not. After you consider the tax, there just isn't much profit there. In the past I've sold them for $15 per. I don't think you'll be able to get much more than that, honestly. Especially since the more common sizes are 3 & 4.

Now, I have learned that variety is good for your sale and these may attract some customers that will stop just to buy these and then end up buying other stuff as well. So, even though you may only make a few bucks on this particular item, you could make more money in other areas to make up for it.

On another topic. Does anyone take credit/debit cards at their sales? My hubby signed up for this free device that connects to our phones. They only charge a 3% service fee. I was just thinking it may be neat to advertise that we accept cards for those that are tight on cash or don't carry it.

Another thing we discussed is possibly charging a 2% charge for the "convenience" of using a card.

Open to hear opinions/comments.

I have the Square one. I've honestly never used it though. I guess I need to though. Another reseller told me that their sales when up by 50% when they started taking CCs.

As far as the diapers go, I agree with everything you said. I am lucky to get $6 from the packs of diapers and I'm sure the boxes would be harder to sell. I also sell mostly sizes 3 & 4. But, as you said, variety makes a big difference for some people. There are several items that I end up paying more than I would like to for just because I know that those things draw people who will end up buying toothpaste! lol

Thanks for the advice... I might grab one or two, and see how they go. If they don't sell my friends are always popping out babies, so easy shower gifts.

I also have the Square reader, and I've used it at my past 3 sales. I don't advertise it, but if someone tells me they have to go to the bank, or are about to put stuff back because they don't have enough cash, I offer. Most of the payments have been in the $30-$40 range, and with the low 2% service fee, it's a great deal. My customers seem to really like the fact that you can text them or email them the receipt right then and there.

Thanks for the second opinion! That's awesome about the 50% spike by taking cc's. I average about $1300-$1500 per sale (Fri & Sat 8-1) and if I could make a jump like that, I would definitely put signs up advertising it! Might have to consider it for my upcoming sale. I just wouldn't want the hassle of swiping it for every $1 and $2 sale, you know?

That is a GREAT idea! Instead of charging a percentage to use a card, just set a "minimum purchase amount" like some stores do.

Do you do garage sales from your home or go to a flea market? I'm stuck in an area where I can't really do a garage sale and it stinks! I'm really looking for an easier way to haul all of this with me to sell it!

I do it out of my garage. I've looked into the flea market gig, but the flea markets around here consider you a business if you set up more than 2 times a year and require a business license and all that jazz. The other issue is like you said, hauling it all around. I drive a Camry, so I would have to rent a Uhaul, make multiple trips, or just not go with a lot of product.

I was planning on a sale this weekend, but the weather keeps fluctuating from 40-60% chance to rain both tomorrow and Saturday, so I decided yesterday to push it back. My luck it will turn out to be a rain free weekend, but if I had done the sale, it would've stormed all day! :)

I agree, we definitely should be able to leave reps in this thread.

As for the minimum, I was thinking maybe set it at $10. I think the Square fee is either 2 or 2.5%, so that's only a quarter. Most folks would try to bargin you down more than that if they didn't have enough cash, so the $10 minimum might entice them to spend the extra dollar or two for the convenience. Plus they have cash left over for the next traditional garage sale they shop at.

I can understand you wanting a lower minimum. I'd just rather not deal with the CC unless it was a larger sale. Do you let people bargain you down? I don't haggle. I tell them my prices are as low as I can make them. They usually just buy it anyway.
I used to give deals but there are items that I can come down on and some that I can't. It can be very upsetting to a customer if you give the person in front of them a "deal" and you don't give them one. It really has nothing to do with them but they don't know that.

How much will you sell Chap Stick for? I had a ton of Carmex from the double IVC deal a while back and I sold that at $.75 each. I would personally do $1 each or 6/$5 on Chapstick. Just because Chapstick is so largely recognized. Unless you just want to be rid of it, then do .50 each.

As for the Tena, I would price them moderately depending on shelf price. You don't want to just price them super cheap because there may just be that one person that comes to your sale. I personally priced the packages that are just under $3 at Walmart for $1.50 and the ones that are $5ish for $2.50. Basically about how I would price other feminine protection items...

Believe it or not, I only get 2-3 a sale that I would consider real hagglers. I took the suggestion of someone's post here once before and I put signs all over my garage that say:

My prices are firm, because they are fair
Most items are priced at 50-75% off of Walmart's prices
Please no haggling

There are still the folks that have a few items that add up to $11-$12 dollars and ask if I will take $10, that kind of thing...claiming that's all the cash they have. We know better of course, but offering a credit card would stop them in their tracks, I think. :) When I tell people I accept them, most are shocked and super happy. They think the little Square device is cool and it's so easy.

I hope no one minds, but I just went into the Wiki and added a few things. It was missing a Feminine Care section, so I added what I charge for pantiliners, pads, tampons, etc. I also added Chapstick/Carmex and Nivea Lip Balms to the Makeup section.

Is there anything else missing from the wiki, or does anyone think some of the prices might need to be updated? I don't mind going in and compiling/changing info if it needs to be updated a little bit.

I'm thinking that some of the Wags/Walmart/CVS freebies lately might need to be added, since we all seem to come in here asking each other prices. Things like the Got2Be, Tena, Hylands Teething Gel, etc.

Thoughts?

It's crazy the differences in the sell prices for everyone. I have no problem selling the Nivea Lip Balm for $1.50 each. If I want to move it, I put it next to my checkout table and mark it and suggest it as an add on. My retail background comes out in full force at my yard sales! I even set my tables up in order so they make sense... I have a baby table, a feminine care table, oral care, etc... it really does look like a Wags or CVS when you walk into my garage!

I'll start the Chapsticks at $.75 and mark them 2/$1 if I want to get rid of them. But they take up so little space, it's not a big deal if they don't fly out the door on my next sale.

I can get higher end prices for most of my stuff, but certain things consistantly bomb at my sales. For example, Sundown Vitamins - I have to mark those suckers at 2/$1 to get them to move.

Just a different opinion from some, I sell these size boxes all the time for $12. I know that's not alot, I am not doing sales to make my living, but I am always finding that I can 'make' enough to make it worth my while to get them. I also sell the jumbo packs for $6. Pampers are far more popular with the people who buy from me, I am constantly running out.

I use diapers as a great way to keep my extracare bucks from CVS from overtaking me. :)

I run mine from 8am-12pm, and this morning I cleared an one day high of $935. :) Still have a lot left, but not quite as much as the big sellers from today. Of course $108 went right to the AC repair guy who had to be called this afternoon, when my AC stopped working. :(

Anyone have any idea on how to sell Bayer Advanced Aspirin? I got lucky during the CVS/Walmart price match on BF, and got paid to take it - but I'm still sitting on about 200 boxes. I've tried $2.00 a box, $1.50 a box, $1.00 a box, and even today I signed them 2/$1.00, an I only sold 2. :( What is it going to take to get these damn aspirin out of my house???? I even sold 7 boxes of Culterelle and 2 boxes of the Free After RR Lichi stuff, but the Bayer won't move? I don't get it....

Hope everyone who is having sales this weekend is making a lot of cash. Good luck, all!!

How much are you selling the culturelle and lichi stuff?

Also, what do you guys plan on pricing the Ultimate Flora Probiotic? Trying to work out pricing for my first garage sale in the spring. Was thinking $5 since I have no idea what this would be used for and if anyone would actually want this? lol

If what you have is the right kind for this, maybe a sign promoting the aspirin for heart health, as many cardiologists recommend an aspirin a day.

Congratulations on a very successful day! :woot:

AHHHH! I typed out a crazy long reply and it went *poof*
Anyway, Congrats on the great sale! How often do you have a sale? Why do you do 8-12?
We are hoping to move from our TINY house in the next year or so. An attached 2 car garage is tops on the list. I've also been checking city ordinaces about Garage Sales so that I don't end up in an area where I can only do 2 sales a year. I don't plan on doing them weekly or even monthly. I'd just like the ability to make the decision myself! Hope your sale goes well today!!

Thanks, Shig! Two day total = $1789. :D I didn't think there's was a snowball's chance I'd pull in as much as I did today, so I'm super happy. Honestly thought I'd pull in maybe $500 at most today, so I'm super stoked to have done $854. :woot:

I just run them from 8 to noon just because I don't want to deal with it all day long. The 4 hours is rough enough some days. I keep everything in my garage, so when the last person is gone, I just shut the door and I'm done. I had stragglers until almost 1 today, but they bought a bit so it was worth it.

This is only the 4th one I've done, I started last year in August, I think? The first one I did right at $1400 in 2 days and I was hooked. :) I had a friend do two more with me in October and the first weekend of December, but she also couponed and of course we had a lot of the same stuff. She would just try to shove her crap in with mine, wouldn't help me set up (tables, signs, etc), and didn't know how to price a darn thing, and I took a big cut in profits with her stuff mixed in with mine. So this time I went back to my original plan, and it worked beautifully.

Ideally, I'd like to do them every 1 1/2 - 2 months or so (no restrictions here, thank goodness), but it depends on inventory levels. Over the last two sales, I've accumulated about 30-40 people to emal for my next one, and word of mouth is getting out. I have regulars that have been to all of them.

It's a hard weekend's work, but I love it. This sale just paid for the new flooring I had installed in my house. What other hobby is there where you can make this kind of money?

I'd go $1.50-$2.00 on them. I think I marked mine at $2 for this weekend's sale, simply because it's half off of Wags pricing, and unless you stock up - people tend to run into the drugstore when the need arises, just like diapers. ;)

Do you flea market or do you have garage sales?

Hey there!!

$2 for the Stayfree.
Surprised they are priced so low at WM! But they are a big seller for me.

Hmmm. on the Wag's. I think I got a few when they were free, no? Have to look.
Probably $1. Shame, but I think thats all you can get being W brand and only 14ct.

I sell the ShopRite ones for $1. Could probably get more, but they were free, maybe we even made money on them? (Saw them for only $1.19 at SR last week) The shelf price is about $2.49, they were sale priced at $1.49 while back and we must have gotten a Cat for them.
.......eta.....I think .they are only about 14ct also.
Got quite a few things I'm ?? about pricing. Gotta read up see what consensus is.

Wow! Great job for 4hrs! Guess it gets hot in the afternoon where you are. We're pretty cold around here still. ...:cold:

I think the problem with the Bayer is that its Aspirin. Most people want Advil, Tylenol, etc. I don't think its low dose, if so, no good on the heart health theme. Most people just don't take plain ol aspirin anymore. Although, its supposed to be good to knock out the flu. If you can find an ad showing it with its regular price,(tape it to your display) maybe it will convince some people its a good deal at $2, or whatever.
Good luck!

I've been selling mine at $5, or they can get 3 of any of my $5 items for $13. I price most of my higher priced suppliments in this section and they move pretty well at that price point. If something stops moving, I put them in a lower catagory until they do start moving.

I can't wait for it to get nice enough for a yardsale. Unfortunately I have loads of the same items, like toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo. I usually do about $1200 in 5 hours. Usually my first sale of the year is killer, like $2300, but I doubt it will happen this time around. I have a primo spot, my new house sits on the corner of two somewhat busy streets, most of my family thinks it's the reason I bought the house.....LOL I feel like I box myself into prices and can't raise them. People remember paying $1.50 and won't fork out $2.

The next sale you have, do not put out any of the items that you normally sell for $1.50. When people ask you why you don't have the items, let them know that the sales and coupons are no longer what they use to be. Therefore, you can no longer purchase the items and sell them for $1.50.

Then, the next sale put all the items out for $2.00. Let people know you purchased the items because you had so many requests from customers who said they were willing to pay $2.00.

Finally, I would limit the number that I put out at one time so that people think you have very little inventory because it's been selling so well. :D

I had that problem about raising prices too. I just reminded people that the prices have gone up in the store and my prices are still half or less.

Had the WORST couple come shopping this past weekend. Telling me I was going to TAKE a quarter for the dental picks, when they were clearly on the table marked $2 or 3/$5. When I told them NO, they informed me the dollar store had them, I advertised half or less than retail so they had the RIGHT to get them for that price. I informed them the dollar store did not have this brand, or if it was this brand it was a much lower count. They came back an hour later, telling me that I was right, the dollar store's count was 10, while mine were 75-90. Then had the tenacity to tell me they would TAKE 3 packs for $2. I finally told them that they were more than welcome to buy at the dollar store, as I wasn't selling them anything.

Ugh! I hate people like that. Luckily I haven't come across too many of those. I do have one guy who always shows up at the end of the day on Saturday wanting to buy all my Colgate for like $.75 each. I refuse each and every time. If he wants to pay what their marked, great - but I'm not cutting my price in half for you to turn around and resell it.

Someone posted wording for a sign that I printed up and taped to every table:

My price are firm, because they are fair
Most items are priced at 50-7% off of Walmart's prices
Please No Haggling

I may have one or two people a sale try it on me, and usually they get met with a firm "No - I'm sorry, I know how much I paid for that, and I just can't sell it at price." Usually they wind up buying what they're were trying to haggle for.

try $2.50 or 2/$4

though, I'm sure I sold mine at $3 :D

I have a few questions I am hoping you can help answer.
Do you tag each item or have a tag in front of or near the items?
How many do you set out at once?
How big are your stockpiles?
I am not sure I have enough stuff, but I am going to have a go of it.
I will make the NO Haggling signs.
If you have any other gems to let me know before I go down in a
slathering of lotion, shampoo, bodywash and deodorant...smelling wonderful
through it all. OH forgot the KY and WET mixed in for that slippery slope..

The first sale I had I was just setting out the extras to try to make some extra cash. I didn't have a lot of anything and I didn't have much of a variety either. It was definitely worth my time, I made about $500. I like to mark things individually but only because I have had people move things to other tables with different prices and then they want it for the lower price. I'd rather just price them. HTHs

I don't have tons of stuff either, and my DH wants me to get rid of it, sell it and start all over again. I am helping 2 families and a few other folks, they are set with laundry and HBA items for the next 2 years. Lots of stuff I donate too.

Any suggestions as to how to set up. It would have to be an outside thing as we do not have a garage. Any suggestions will be welcomed by me as well as others.

I'm with Shig - I definitely price every last item individually... unless it's a box of 300 Chapsticks, then I just slap a sign with the price on it. :D That way there's no questioning the price, no moving around of product, etc. If I want to lower a price, I keep some backup stickers in my apron pocket and change them when it's slow.

I'm super detailed when it comes to my sales. It's the 10+ years I spent it retail that force the habit! I set it up like you would a drug store... I have all the baby/women's stuff on one table, then comes the makeup, then shaving stuff. The next row of tables has body wash, shampoo, lotion, oral care, and then meds. On the other side I keep the laundry, cleaning, paper products, home fragrance, pet stuff, and office supplies. I like to keep those kind of things seperated from what you would use on/in your body. I also fill up a large bookshelf with kids toys, or odds and ends. Last but not least food always has it's own table.

I also tend to keep a few cheapies (like the Chapstick), or things I want to move on the table I check people out at. Just like the stores do, I keep my impulse buys at checkout. :lmao:

A few more tidbits of advice: Keep several totes/shopping bags on hand for your customers to use while they look around, and hand it to them while they're shopping, and definitely take down names and email addresses so you can let them know about your next sale! I have about 50 people on my list now, and they show up without fail.

HTH!

I put most things into little bins/trays, and put a price on the whole bin. I went to costco the day before my first sale and paid like $19 for 20 plastic "showbox" boxes with lids. And I used all the boxes w/o the lids. They were expensive, but sooooo worth it. And I use a lot of shallow cardboard box/tray things, like the free ones you get at the front of Costco.

Then on one table, I would just do prices in general. Everything in one area is just that certain price. For razors, I do one half sheet of paper printed with all the different types of razors and their corresponding prices, and put all the razors in the same place. They can figure it out themselves. But then sometimes I get 'how much is this?' without even looking at signs. Once I explain the signs to them, they get it and stop asking about prices for everything. :)

Then I'd have one bigger tray with things that I only have 1 of, and I price each of those individually, or print a sign with all of them listed with the individual prices.

Here are a few pictures I found on my computer.

Our prices are AMAZINGLY close. Difference I do is I have tubs full of like products under the tables (toothpaste with toothpaste, hair care with hair care, etc), warning people that the tub underneith, may or may not match the price point above it, we just want them to be able to dig. We pretty much break ours down by table or section of the table (IE, everything on this table is $2 or 3/$5, or everything from this red line to this red line is $1 or 6/$5). I have very few people try to move things, I (and pretty much anyone who does resell) can tell you exactly what we are charging for each product. We know IF we have $$ invested, or if it was free, or IF it was a money maker at the store level (colgate anyone?).

We all have those customers we love to hate, but most of the time we put on our happy faces and treat them like normal customers. There are the few though that even if we paid them to take it and gave them the deed to our house, they still wouldn't be satisfied, so I chase them away, telling them in no uncertain terms to go argue with walmart, they'll get further than trying to tell me what to do with my things!

I need some advice. I haven't sold diapers before, and it's been a long time since my kids were that small!
I'm considering buying some of the Pampers jumbo packs - pretty good deal at Riteaid this week. I can get them for about $3/pack after coupons and +up rewards.

What would be the best sizes to buy?
And is $6 a good price to sell these?

Thanks :)

Sizes that are good to get are 3, 4 then 5 or 6. If you get smaller sizes I'd only get a few of each size. Some will buy for baby gifts, newborn, etc. Kids stay in 3's & 4's the longest. I've charged $5 or $6 a pack but depends on your area.

I'm thinking of having a yard sale sometime this summer and have been scooping up freebies and cheap stuff in preparation.

What do you think would be a good price for those Transformer Kre-O Sets (sell for $7.99 at Target)? I gave some away but have a few left I figure I might sell. Is $3 good?

3 & 4 are best...then 2, then 1. I would tend to stay away from anything above a size 4 unless you know of people that would actually buy them. Most babies are out of diapers before they hit those sizes.

$6 is a decent price but with the rise of diaper prices everywhere and limited sales available, I personally would do $7.

I agree. I stick with sizes 3 or 4 and if those aren't available I go down. I have 2 kids and 10 nieces and nephews and none of them have gone past a 4. Also, I used to sell my diapers at $6 and they went quickly. I recently decided to move them to $7. They might not move as quickly but I'm confident that they will move. When I don't have them I am constantly asked about them so I'm sure they will sell just fine at $7.

I bet you do well, you're prices are cheap! I get $2 for the toothbrushes. $1 for the Reach Crystal. they are one of my best sellers. I do flea markets every weekend. just one thing I noticed. I guess if you sell from home and not every week, you just want it gone and as much $$ as you can. Biore $3 no less!

I never took any 'after' pics. By the end of my sales, I'm so BEAT, I can't even stand anymore. My boyfriend/family will occasionally take some pics (which is where those came from), but I've never really had room in my mind to worry about pics. Stockpile sales are so much more stressful/time consuming than I expect. But when moving the leftover stock back into the house, we can always tell that we've sold so much, and there's so much less stuff than when the day started.

We're both in CA. :) I have tubs under all the tables too, you just can't see, they're covered by the tarp. I hate it when they dig though. I put out at least 1 of everything we have on the tables, and the tubs underneath only hold extras, so there's no point in people digging and messing everything up. No one has moved anything at my sale before, I've never even thought about that.

I think I need to raise some prices. I had this reseller come to my last sale, and bought me out of everything, and now stock is so low on many things people are looking for. They took all my biore/C&C/Neutrogena facial cleansers and all brands of lotion for 2/$5. :( Then bought out all the 'good deal, more expensive' products, so I feel like I'm only left with crappy-er stuff. They took all my medicine/aspirin for $1.

I don't think I put out 'that much' product. It might look like a lot of stuff on the tables, but there was so much more stuff under the tables/not out. So I guess it's about the proportion of stuff you put out, not how much you put out period...? There were other sections not pictured too. Agh, there's just so much stuff!

I'm always looking out for clearanced things to re-sell. Like I found all sorts of kites at 75% then sold them the following spring, 90% Xmas wrapping paper from CVS, 90% Valentine's stuff from T, .59 Planters trail mix from T, and .39 Lego pkgs from T. I'll buy 100+ items and over $100 at times if it's a good product and I can double my profit. My fave so far have been those Planters, sold them for $3 (got about 120). Can't sell food at my FM but sold them to other vendors and friends. Then, those Legos have sold very well at $2. I do the same thing! All the great after holiday deals... I especially love the Dollar General $.10 sale. I got there a little too late for the post summer clearance sale last year (totally missed the post Christmas sale), but I got tons of cute 4th of July/Americana stuff that I'll put out for my next sale. I spent roughly $75 bucks on toys at CVS when their stuff went 75% off after Christmas and I recouped it all then some last weekend, and I have stuff left over. The jewelry armoires will go out prior to Mother's Day. :)

I won't put out seasonal stuff until that season is about to start. Don't want to be TOO obvious that it went directly from the 75 or 90% off clearance at the stores to my garage. ;)

I use a blow dryer. Heat up the area, pull up a corner and peel it back slowly. Some come off easily while others tend to be a bit more work. If there is any residue left in the spot I use paint thinner to remove that. I've also read that other people use something called "goo gone" ? I'm not familiar with it so I can say from experience.

Would the $0.99 be your final price for the Glade? Are you in a pre or post-coupon tax state? Personally, that's not something I would touch, since you would make not even make $.50 a can (assuming 7% pre coupon tax state). After gas and you time to get it - it's barely a break even item. Makes an okay filler, I guess - but I wouldn't go to the store to just buy that.

Anyone care to share how they organize their inserts? What do you put them in? What do you put that on? I know organization has been discussed in other threads but I think our situation is a bit different since most of us buy a much larger amount of inserts than normal couponers. TIA!!

Also, I have to say that I am so glad this thread is moving again!! I can't wait to get started selling again!

So, I live in an area where a sale just isn't practical. I'm hoping to get some family and friends to let me do a sale at their houses a few times a year. I already talked to my mom and offered her $50 in credit to have one at her house. My problem is, she (and the rest of my family) lives an hour and a half from me. It's such a burden to go that far for a sale. I do a tailgate sale during the summer that isn't too far from home but it is only on Saturday. I'm thinking if I can do a weekend garage sale at least once a month it would definitely help! I'm saving up for a bigger house. :D WITH a garage! ;)

I file inserts in a large plastic tote, by week, in file folders.

I file inserts in a large plastic tote, by week, in file folders.
Thanks, I've seen others say they do that too. My problem is I can only fit about 2 weeks of inserts in there and my inserts won't all fit in a file folder. I usually get a minimum of 50 or so inserts each week so I've been putting them in boxes by week and putting the date on the outside. It just takes up a lot of space since the boxes don't really stack well. :(

ETA: I was thinking you meant one of the file boxes. You actually use a large tote? How do you get the folders to stay?

I use Paper grocery sacks.......I double sack the bags.....and keep the sacks under my 6 ft work table at home.( they do not stack well either, but easier for me to hide)
I write on the side of the bag with a sharpie pen....the week and which Q's I most likely will use( as certain Q's expire.... I cross them out)
I also use a plastic file box in my vehicle and keep 10-20 presorted sets of each weeks Q's......so I have them on hand while out shopping ( Plus Q's already cut, that I plan to use that week that I keep in my special box)

They stay upright just like a file folder in a drawer. After a good weeding out of expired Q's of they don't stay standing up I wedge a old phone book under one end so the tilt keeps them standing or use something at the back as a spacer till it is full again.

These are both great ideas! I think I will most likely try a combination of both. With the older inserts in the paper bags and the newer ones in the tote! I really need to get better organized. When I started couponing it wasn't at this level so what I was doing before just isn't working anymore! Reps to you both!

Can I do that for those CVS stickers that chip and flake off? I have cosmetic items, and HBA and they all have that unsightly CVS sticker. Can't get them off.

Does anyone do sales in the DFW area? Are there inexpensive flea market or tail gate sales that one can do? I don't want to do anything from the house, well DH does not want a single outside/garage sale from the house. :( I do have folks who purchase from me privately and I donate plenty..
Any other suggestions as to how to get rid of my stuff?
Thanks!

Have you asked friends or family if you can have a sale at their house? I'm in an area where I can't really do a garage sale so I do other places. Is there a reason DH doesn't want you to do them? When I first started buying a lot DH didn't want me to because he didn't think I would be able to get rid of it. Now, he helps me. He was AMAZED at how much I made the first sale I had. So, you never know, maybe he will change his mind. ;)

Any suggestions on good sellers?? Glade is .99 this week.....we sold a ton of it for 1.00-1.50 last summer.

Not sure what you mean. Just about everything will sell for the right price to the right customer. And what sells for one area at one price might not sell for another. I just meant that I know my area and in my area I don't move a ton of men's bw at $2 per so I would never pay $2 oop for the dial because I would not be able to move it. The ONLY way I pay that much oop for something is if it is 1) a high demand item which I know I can mark up enough to make it worthwhile, or 2) because I have expiring RR/ECB/UPS that I have to use or lose, or 3) to offer a larger variety. I will only do #3 if I have limited variety that isn't moving. For example, I had a ton (200+) bottles of gillette mens bw and it wasn't moving at all, nobody even looked at it or smelled it. Then when the Right Guard men's bw came out and there were a ton of deals I loaded up on that. And oddly enough people started buying the gillette. Seems like when you offer variety it makes people want to smell/look at something they might not normally look at, but after smelling the Right Guard they seemed to want to 'compare' to the Gillette. The Gillette started selling. In cases like that I would pay a little more oop (but not as much as the dial foam will be).

The glade, I wouldn't personally pay .99 for something that I am going to resell at 1.00. Again, unless I had RR/ECB/UPS expiring or needed something for a filler.

Any tips on removing security stickers from cardboard packaging?

Thinking of having my first sale of the year the first weekend in May. Lots of prep to be done before that can happen!

I know a lot of people remove these, I personally don't bother and haven't had any issues with leaving them on. I sell at a big venue 2x per year and nobody has ever said anything. I also don't remove the price tags, I feel I want my shoppers to see what the stores price was on that item.
If this is your first sale and you plan on doing more. The best piece of advice I can give would be to invest in a price gun. Not one of the $10 specials off the bay (they don't work well in my experience). But for about $60 (after coupon of course) at Staples you can get a single line pricing gun. The labels are inexpensive and it will save a TON of time on pricing items. I also am one that prices every item individually and I don't offer "3 for deals". My thought is everyone gets the same bottom line price whether they buy 1 or 3. If you wanted to do the "3 for pricing" you could get the 2 line price gun for about $15 more. I also put a price tag on each item because it eliminates the "but I got this from that area", which is what happened my first sale. It also makes it easier when you have people helping you that are not familiar with your prices.

snip I don't get 40+ inserts anymore (lost my contact boo!) but when I did I had them in milk crates and in hanging/file folders. Normally I would have 20 inserts per folder and no more than 60 per hanging file. I then used those plastic hanging file labels to put the dates. It was really easy to find what I needed. I also color coded them. Let's say red file folder for SS, blue for P&G and green for RP. Or you could also use plain manila ones and use a different color of sharpie to right in the dates. I used to teach before so I tend to use primary colors alot! :O HTHs

I REALLY need to get one of these price guns!! I hate the expensive but it would relieve alot of headache in remembering all the prices for each item I have. I don't currently price things but have price tags in front of each item. This helps but there are people that STILL will ask how much things cost. I do a FM and it would also help out my neighbor when I need to run out to know the cost of things. Maybe Amazon has one and I could use my SBs? :D

The customers who ask prices will always ask prices. I vote for the price gun, too. You'll never let yourself be without one again.

Has anyone sold the South Beach diet bars that were free at WAGS a couple months ago? Regularly about $9.00, I priced them at $3.00 and sold not a one at a garage sale where my total intake was over $1700. Does anybody have a price suggestion? (I sell lots of groceries so this was a surprise.)

They have white or orange stickers. The orange stickers are very noticeable! Just sayin' it has been a huge time saver for me. I agree the people that are going to ask what the price is will do it even with a tag right on it.

I've walked into the FM with several totes of items not priced and done it right then and there when I am setting up in the morning before opening. Line items up and bam bam bam run the gun over it and it is priced in seconds. Easy peasy I tell ya!

Have you considered looking in the clearance section of your stores? I live for clearance stuff @ Rite Aid. Pair a 50% or 75% off item with a coupon and you've got a decent deal to cash out some play money and turn it into yardsale cash. Just another option. :D

I do something a bit different than the rest of you. RA has shoe organizers that hang in the closet for about $10. They hold the inserts pretty well....just a thought...

Also, I was considering picking up the Schick Hydro Silk razors that go on sale at RA for 1.99. They are regularly 9.99 or higher. Is this something that is profitable or should I wait for free? We'll be having our first sale on 4/6-4/7. I'm excited and nervous. I've read a bunch of tips in this thread and they've been very helpful. TIA.

Except if you're a dingbat (read: me), couldn't figure out how to load it, pulled it apart, loaded it - and now the labels won't advance. I have to manually pull the label until it clicks, then price, then pull, then price, then pull......

The ONE time I actually got it to advance, it prints in the wrong spot - like on the line between the two labels.

I would say it's worth a shot. I was able to sell the Gillette razors steadily at $5 when there were always sales that made them free. Considering the razor sales have evaporated, I think these would make you a decent profit. Plus, it would add variety. What good is selling shave gel if you don't have a razor?!

I wouldn't say you're doing anything wrong. Everyone is going to have different results based on prices, location, time of year, etc. And you have to keep in mind that a lot of people here have been doing this for a long while and have built up a clientele if you will. You cannot expect 1K plus instantly. You have to wait until word gets around. Also try advertising. Or maybe try a different location. You have to find something that works for you. But don't instantly give up and deem yourself a failure.

My first sale is coming up April 21 (it's the Poconos, and I am half-convinced we will get snow, but the way this non-winter has been, it's likely to be 95) -- last year I would get around $400-500 a day selling most items for $2. Razors $4, some random products more, but generally $2. I'd sell mix-n-match toothpaste and toothbrushes 3/$5 (you'd be amazed how many folks will buy Reach Crystal Clears at that price...LOL) ... depending on my stock and how desperate I was to get rid of stuff, I'd also mix-match shampoo/stylers at 3/$5.

But over the winter I have had to work a LOT harder for my deals, and some, like the razors mentioned earlier, have just disappeared. I'm thinking about raising prices 50 cents on all my $2 items. Are there any you would not think will sell at $2.50?

I am wondering how the economy is going to affect the sales this year. I noticed last year that people tended to be more cautious about spending and pondered longer on some items(higher value-5 dollars and over). On the other hand, prices in the stores have gone up sooo much!!! I too have not seen good deals on the razors. I am wondering what to price C9 kids clothes, paper towels, and also does anyone do store brand cleaners.

Yes, I noticed this last year too. Very few people would stock up (like we couponing addicts would ;)) -- even when they said "wow, this price is incredible," they would only buy one, maybe two, of an item. Money was very tight at this level. That's why I worry about increasing prices -- the economy seems to be somewhat better, but I'm not sure anyone believes it will last, YKWIM? Plus, there's the gas prices to consider.

In particular I was wondering about the Got2Be, the Olay body wash, Olay facial cleansers -- all of those I now sell for $2 -- and razors (I sell for $4)... Plus, last year I sold every Tylenol Precise I could stock for $3. Not sure I want to do that again. Seems too cheap.

:(My GS location has ended (SIL moved in with gramma, and NO WAY will gramma let me have one there, long story!!)

But will chime in anyway..........Try $2.50, you can always lower it or let someone haggle you down a quarter..........

No free Razors, but cheap at WM ($1.99 ish) Schick new battery operated razor with $4 peelies, price match to Wags price after RR to $5.99, use $4 peelie, and then use any overage from MM q's to pay off the OOP on the razors. These are $9 razors, so you should be able to get at least 50% of that for your price.........

The guys around here were running out of razors, so I am "forcing" them to try these, I have been getting pretty good reviews--asked them to compare to the fusions and they can't really seem to find anything to complain about, other than they are new and different!!

I bought a Garvey pricing gun from Amazon. The prices are fluid, but I think you can get one for about 50.00 at the moment. I have been really happy with mine so far. They are easy to load and work very well. Honestly, I cannot imagine NOT having a pricing gun now, best thing I ever bought!!! :D

Do you happen to know the model number of your Garvey gun? There are several on Amazon in the same price range, but there are no reviews on any of them, so I want to make sure I get a good one. Thanks!

Has anyone had any luck selling items like Zhu-Zhu Pet Accessories? I have the opportunity to buy quite a few of the larger accessories like the airplanes, police cars, etc for $1, but not sure if I can easily flip these for $6+..Anyone with any input?

MAY be flippable, but not for more than $5....if at all. Probably better to use these for toys for tots or the like.

Totally OT, but wondering how Gator Gal ended up in the Poconos (I'm in FL and hubby is from PA and we've contemplated moving - and contemplated - and contemplated). PM me if you don't mind so as not to clutter :)

The best piece of advice I can give would be to invest in a price gun. *snip*

I REALLY need to get one of these price guns!!

Once you get a price gun you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. True story.

I'm hesitant to get a price gun. I have enough people asking me prices, and the tags I use now are more noticeable than the tags from a price gun.

I personally HAVE a price gun and don't use it anymore. LOL

I'm definitely in the camp of pricing everything piece by piece. It helps me keep track of all the prices when I'm adding up a stack of items (even though I know my own prices) and it also helps the people who help me at my big sales AND it helps my customers.

However, I don't like those yellow or orange tiny stickers. The prices are so small and people don't know if that's MY price or an old sticker left from a store or something. Plus they don't stick very well on some of the packaging.

I've posted here before about what I do--- I use white address labels and print 2 lines of pricing per each label, then cut them into rows so it's easy to rip off one price at a time. I keep stacks of these "rows" of prices in individual envelopes (50 cents, 75 cents, $1, $1.50, $2, $2.50, etc) and wrap them with a rubber band. They're big enough and clear enough so there is no doubt that they're my prices. I also try to label every item consistently on the top so when it's all laying out on the table you can easily see each and every price.

I find it very helpful to price them as you buy them. We like to lay out our huge hauls for photos after we shop, then price them up and haul them into the basement. The address labels stick VERY well and we rarely have trouble with them peeling off.

It's what works for us!

Well I for one am not hopeful to make as much money this year... but not necessarily because of the customers not buying--- more because the stores have been SOOOO stingy with deals around here! All the new limits, etc... I'm really afraid I don't have enough stock to make a big impact this year (our big sale is in mid-May). Like, I have ZERO shampoo/conditioners... I am PRAYING for a sale I can stock up on before May!!!

OH, I have a ton of Oral B battery toothbrushes. Not the really expensive ones, the ones that retail for something like $8? Whaddya'll think - $4?

I sell out of the 5 or 6 I have at every sale for that price.

I saw the same clearance deal at CVS... but I asked my younger nieces/nephews and it seems like Zhu Zhu pets have run their course... I'm not sure it's worth the gamble myself...

What kind of price gun? I am looking to get a second one, maybe we can work something out.
I buy the 'pink' stickers, everyone is able to see them and haven't had a question yet about it being my price or a store price. Although if I buy clearance items I always remove the stores clearance sticker. Typically the store price tag is white and has their name on it. But your right, it is all what works for you.

OH, I have a ton of Oral B battery toothbrushes. Not the really expensive ones, the ones that retail for something like $8? Whaddya'll think - $4?

I want to say Walmart & Target prices on the battery operated (non rechargeable) Oral B toothbrushes are $5.80 something. Definitely under $6. I price at $3.50 and sell steadily.

I have been selling mine for 2.50 and they are moving nicely. I mainly bought hairspray, gel and flatiron spray. I would have bought other product had I been able to find any :(
Kroger has the "Flat Iron Serum" on sale 2 for 6.00. Works very nice with the 3.00 off coupon. I had 2, don't know where I got them from.

Man, I must be doing something wrong. I setup at a flea market and my best day (8-4) was $320.

For both of you,
Sales totals are declining because of the extreme couponing show and the sight of those who have been doing really good for years doing this (For me, only a few years). At the market I go to, I was the only one in my building for the last few winters, now this year there are 4 of us, pls the lady in the other building who has been there 30 years.

PLUS, I can see 2,3 or 4 indoor sales in peoples homes every weekend. PLUS last summer there are 2,3, or 4 outdoor stockpile sales. Lord knows how many stockpile sales there will be this year:vomit:.

Just the first two decent weekends just passed and there are already 2 or 3 new people setting up outside this year already at my market.... gonna be a packed one.

Have ya ever been to a flea market where there are 30 vendors all selling the same cowboy hats, or socks, or purses, or chinese cell phone covers...... YEAH everyone is gonna be an Extreme Couponer this year!!

I just went to someone's house yesterday where the whole living room had shelving throughout. It was is such a bad neighbor hood where I would only go when it was light out, that I seen a police car next to a car crashed into a fence with the door off and the guy took off running. Real nice! I yelled out "Why be a car thief when you can be an extreme couponer?"............ He yelled back "I am an Extreme couponer! I have to get to the $4 razor sale!"

okay, rant over, all truthfull except for that last sentence.;)

See our area must be crappier--- we don't have that great of deals . Since that awful show started over a year ago, I've seen the good deals dry up and our competiton disappear. At the twice-yearly Worlds Largest Yardsale we always had three other couponers selling--- the last one 6 months ago, it was down to only one other person. Now my own stock is dwindling and I wonder how long *I* will still be in the game! :(

What do you guys & girls think about changing your strategy a bit? I have slowly steered away from my yard sales because I have more success with people just placing orders. I have one person who works in a nursing home and one that works for the government that do a lot of my work for me. They take orders from the people at their jobs in exchange for free stuff. I give them 10% of what they sell back in goods from my stockpile. This past weekend the lady sold just over $1,000 in stuff for me so she got $100 worth of free stuff. She is in a different town from me so I make a trip about once every other month. This keeps the people from treating me like a store and getting just a few items. They know they have to get enough to last until I come again. My brother has been trying to get me to branch out into going to a retirement home and selling direclty to the residents who may not be able to get out themselves. These people are also ususally on a fixed income so they appreciate the low prices. I have a MBA so I know about changing your strategy as the market changes. Your business may be drying up the way you do it now but just change your strategy a little and you may see more business than you had before.

I do both. (currently) Where I used to live, too many people were doing the yard sales so I had to give it up because it just was not worth it. But, we've since moved several hundreds of miles away to a bigger area with more middle class/upper class people so I am going to give it a try again.

I do also sell to people that make orders. Currently it's just one person because he gives me a sufficient amount of business. Going to try a yard sale at the end of next month and if it doesn't work out, will look into other options.

I think you're idea is very clever with the 10% idea, though. The guy that currently orders from me has people that he has been trying to get on board to buy and isn't doing so well. Perhaps if I give him some incentive...

Well here's another idea:

All of my makeup, small toys, & other little things I find go into these totes I call my "goodie buckets." The week/ two weeks before Christmas, Valentines Day & Easter I take them to work and people come & shop in my office on their lunch breaks (I have a very cooperative boss). I have a flyer I email out (pm me if you want a copy) to let people know that I have stocking stuffers, things to put in your purse, Easter basket, etc. Nothing is priced above $3 but it is amazing how much this stuff ads up when people start shopping.

I'm a homemaker so the office thing wouldn't work for me. I would have to do flyers around the community, find a local retirement community, church, etc.

I tried flyers where I used to live and got zero response. Not sure if it's worth the effort again...

I did see someone on V-day make goodie baskets and had them sitting outside to sell at $10. Thought about something like that if I can get a good assortment of lotions and other skincare goodies, chocolates, etc.

There are just so many options out there and I know there is no way of knowing unless I try them. And of course different things work in all different areas.

My mom had asked me to bring my things to her house so she could invite her friends from work over to shop. I'm not sure if I'm going to do it since it would be a lot of work. I do think it would grow if I did. She might not have a big turn out the first time but when word spread I think it would grow. I'm thinking if I do it and then give them a date for the next time I would be there they could invite their friends and family as well. My mom lives in a small town and her workplace is the only large business. I'll let u know how it goes if I decide to do it!

Thanks for the info. It's too soon for me to rep you again but I'll try to get ya later. I just started restocking again. Since we moved I sold all my previous stuff and we were in a one bed apartment for a while and I had no room. So, just the stuff I have is only about 6 weeks accumulation. It's a pretty good stock but not much variety, ATM.

I keep a running list as well. Mine is a bit different, though. I try to list the flavor/variety and size as well. I mostly do it for me because all my stuff is thrown together so when I go digging, if I listed the size/flavor, it's easier for me to find it and change my "inventory" list accordingly.

While we are talking about diapers, what do you guys price the 115-140 count size 3/4 Huggies at? I think i saw them this past weekend for 37.99 at Target, but what would be a good price point for them at a GS?

Never had that big of a box, but considering we're pricing the "smaller" boxes at $15, I wouldn't go any less than $25 for the bigger ones. I think $30 is just going to be a bit too high of a price point for a GS/YS.

Thanks. So you just give them a random flavor/scent? Do you have issues with that?

I only have a few people who ask for a particular scent/flavor. Most people are just glad to get them at this low of a price. What I do is email them the list. They send it back to me with how many they want and they note if they want a certain flavor or not (ex. some people only use gel/ powder deodorant). If I don't have exactly what they want I tell them and they get to decide if they want what I have. It is not that much of a bother at all and it is easier for me than to list everything.

Different things work for different people but I hope you can use my list as a starting point. Once you get some regular customers, order some business cards off vistaprint (I paid about $11 for 500) and ask them to share with their friends and family. I only pay commission to those two people who actively sell for me though.

I used to do that but it got to be too much to list all of the flavors/sizes/scents. My customers know if I have two identical items listed with two different prices then the more expensive one is bigger. I do have my stockpile organized in bins that kind of go along with the headings I used above.

I used to do lists, it was worth it when I had lots of stuff and was living in a 2 BR apt. Now I live in a 4 br house with a 2 car garage it doesn't seem like so much stuff, well it probably isn't we all know the deals aren't like they used to be, especially at the grocery stores, I used to score 100's of boxes of cereal at least once a month, and 300 boxes of cereal takes up alot of room. The list just got to be too much, especially when you only have 4 or 10 of the same item, 6 people place orders and all of them want the one thing you only have 4 of, you lose a lot of sales, but if they were in person they wouldn't know about the sold out item and would just buy a different brand or flavor. Can't wait for my first sale!

Sorry to stray off the topic of selling to individuals, but I was wondering what everyone was pricing all the CVS electronic clearance goodies we've picked up this week?

I have 3 MP3 players, and 4 of the Vivitar Digital Video Recorder/Camera, and if we don't give the Zone 60 game consoles to the bf's nephew, I'll sell them.

Any one have an idea yet of what they're going to mark these items?

Swiffer duster 10 count refills-these are $8 at Walmart, but not sure if they will move for $4?? $4
Purex Ultra 18 count laundry tabs (detergent usually flies here, but never had these before?) $1

Prices in red.

Personally, I am not going to sell mine. I cannot rely on them to even work. I would hate for someone to get pi$$ed because they bought it and it didn't work.

i started my first outside yard sale of the year today, and i was AMAZED i made $907 !! the most i've ever made in one day, my first sale last year i made around $700. sold a ton of revlon nail polish @ 1.50, sold out of bw, shampoo and conditoner, @ 2 each, i probably sold 60% of my stockpile altogether.
i did get a visit from my local pd late in the afternoon. i know almost all the officers in our tiny town, and it was one i knew, she just told me she was told to tell me i couldn't resell medicine, then wished me good luck on my sale and told me to make lots of $$, LOL, she was very chill about it, didn't even get out of her truck to look at what i had. obviously someone came to my sale and went and complained that i was selling meds!! so does anyone know the laws about meds? i didn't have much, mostly bayer, kids triaminic and infant advil. i did have some dietary supplements and cough drops. am i correct in thinking they would not be included in meds? thanks

Laws are probably going to vary by state. I personally wouldn't sell anything that is government regulated. (like nyquil, robitussin, etc.) but that's just me.

Wouldn't worry too much about dietary supplements or cough drops.

hmmm, i am in michigan, and i have been googling it but not really finding any info about reselling otc meds. i will not personally sell any medications such as robitussin and nyquil, because i have seen what can be done with it....... all i had out was the low dose bayer aspirin, kids triaminic, infant advil, and several different boiron homeopathic things. guess someone didn't like it, oh well, i already donated a bunch to my local food bank, but i can take the rest to a food bank a couple towns away. just wondering now for future reference. thanks!

As far as I'm aware, it is legal to resell OTC meds. There may be laws in your state prohibiting it, but I don't believe that there are. Your best bet would've been to ask the officer specifically for which statute prohibits the sale. You can then look for yourself. If it were me, I would also adhere to the federal guidelines about selling DM stuff. HTH

Man, I must be doing something wrong. I setup at a flea market and my best day (8-4) was $320.

Don't feel bad. If I clear $200 after the entry fee at the FM (7-12), I am happy. I never make as much as others post or even what you made. If I made $320 in a day I would be thrilled! I like hearing about others tremendous sales, but I have learned not to compare it to my own sales. Everyone's situation is different.

Look at it this way, that's $40 an hour for selling something you already have, paid minimally for or were just going to give away anyhow, at $5-10 per sale average, that's still A LOT of sales! Heck there have been times when I haven't made that much and I have a good client base built up. It really depends on the time of year, time of month, the weather (rain = slow sales, cold = slow sales, conflicting events = slow sales, etc). Think about it this way, when was the last time you went to your job and made $320 for a single day?

Great perspectives. I really shouldn't complain - as you said, where else could I make $40/hour, get fresh air and not have to deal with a boss!

A lot of you are probably already doing this...

The ONE thing that has kept my sales totals trending up is collecting email addresses from every customer that will give it. I then send out emails to my list (nearly 100 addresses now), telling them of every time I have a sale - whether it is in my garage, or at a flea market.
I have a lot of regulars that come to every sale!

Someone on this list suggested this a long time ago, I don't remember who :O, but this is a good way to increase sales.

Thanks this is a GOOD Idea!! I was going to try that, but my locals asked me to text them instead. This is good & bad because sometimes they text me throughout the year wanting to stop by on a whim and see what I have. If I let them come over I always have to cover up donation items or they get "mad" at me that I won't sell to them. I've learned to either hide or thoroughly cover up either donation items or items that I'm holding for another customer or they get MAD!
Overall, Texting has been very good for me.

The email sign up sheet TOTALLY works. I started with just a handful of folks, but now that my sale has gotten more popular, everyone wants to sign up. Probably have about 50 regulars now. Some I can count on being the first to show up on Friday morning. I swear some people go into work late on those days to shop my sale first! :)

Take it a step further...do business cards. You can print them up yourself on plain cardstock or find one of those promo's from vista-print. We found that some people don't like to give out their email address on a sheet of paper where other people can see it. So to eliminate that concern we have slips of paper and a box with a hole cut in the top to put them in, to keep them private.
We also have business cards set on the table with our email address. In addition we put a card in every bag. Many times people don't think they will need more of what you have or don't realize the great deal until after the fact. Putting a card in their bag has resulted in any additional long time customers for us. It is very common to get 10-20 email's from people that were at our sale or friends of people that were at our sale.

You could also set up an announcement only yahoo group and have customers join the yahoo group. This eliminates having to decipher and enter all the email address' yourself.

Why not just buy some? You can find deals on these often for around $15-$20 each. Would definitely pay off instead of having to rent them. Unless you can "rent" them for free from a church or something.

I would bet that if you placed your stuff on tables, you would probably sell a lot more than selling from the ground. I always set my stuff up under umbrellas. I find that when people are not in the sun, they are likely to spend more time shopping.

I had my DH drill holes (spaced accordingly) into my tables so that I set umbrellas up to keep everyone (including me) out of the sun. Like you said, people will look longer and another added benefit is keeping deodorants from melting in the hot sun. I got a great deal on beach umbrellas at Rite Aid when their summer stuff went on clearance.

The best part is that they bought a lot of stuff that I couldn't get rid of last summer.
Unfortunately, I'm now completely out of shampoos and men's body wash. Now I'm pumped to have a sale at the end of the month.
