It's that time of year again when Garage sales are popular. I have seen some discussion of Garage Sales in regular discussion threads, and perhaps there is talk of it in the BS thread, but I think it would be good to have it's own thread and people can add in the WIKI what sold for them and at what price - or what they will sell it for.

This way people having a garage sale can have a nice reference sheet and can learn from the mistakes of others. I will post in the WIKI info I have read.

Yes, I am having a garage sale this weekend at a friends work. I have read some info on another site and it is nice that they have their own thread for this.

Garage sales are not for everyone, please no bashing on those who wish to do it. It's a way to make money to buy more coupons and fuel your 'addiction'. LOL!

Mods, if you think this would be better suited in a different forum, please advise or move. I just thought it would be good to have a garage sale discussion and a WIKI to boot to help others.

Thanks!

Vicki

PLEASE NOTE: This WIKI is a reference guide to price the items you may have. Know your states laws before selling new unopened items or medicine. Laws vary from state to state, and can from city to city on what is allowed to be sold at a garage sale or flea market. Sell at your own risk. Thanks!

Garage Sale Tips:
- Use a muffin tin to keep coin denominations separated.
- A fishing tackle box is a great way to keep money safe and organized - coins separated in the compartments, and bills underneath. Some even have locks
- Use a carpenter's apron with pockets in the front. Works great, bills and .5 and .10 on one side, .25 on the other. It goes with you, for safety and convenience. Works great for school concession stands too..

Prices here in the wiki show a range of prices SDers have gotten for each product/item.

*Please post what you sold items at in your individual post - and if you are in a big metropolis or not - this sometimes makes a difference.*

Great idea! OP. I'm actually having a garage sale this weekend. One thing that I learned is most things should be at least prices 50% of retail (if not less) and don't put ALL of ONE ITEM that you have out at the same time (as far as stockpile items). Someone said that people are more willing to DEAL when you have MORE of something. Example: if you have 10 new "widgets" don't put all 10 "widgets" out at once. :lmao:

I also advertised in the paper. I'm also trying something new. Since I have to work Friday...I'm doing my sale 5-8 p.m. and then Sat. 8-2 p.m. (Just thought I'd have no competition at 5 pm on a Friday so I'll let you all know how it works out).

Any other suggestions?

Are you saying that people are expecting to deal and haggle you down if you have 10 items out vs. 3? If you have 3 items out they are more likely to buy it at your price? The way you say more willing to deal can be read two ways...just clarifying. I appreciate your input. ;-)

HAVE YOUR RECEIPTS SOMEWHERE CLOSE BY in case you get nosey people questioning you. I have read in threads that someone had the cops called on them because some people thought she stole it all. You don't have to let police in your house if they don't have a warrant. Don't let them in. I know you have nothing to hide, but there is no reason to let them in. (Just reminding you of your rights) Easiest if you have a box of receipts to show them to prove you bought it all. It will shut them up and they will be on their way. ;-)

This is something you may not think of, so I'm just reminding you. I keep my receipts in a Huggies Wipes container. I love those things. ;-)

Vicki.

Well when you get as much as I do, selling it all at $1 a piece can yield you a hefty profit. The one thing I won't YS is food. I may give samples of stuff away but won't sell it.

Try USPS here: http://ircalc.usps.gov/Default.aspx?country=10013
You'll have to know the weight. HTHs

Few coupons is prob under an ounce.

There is no paypal protection for selling to Australia.

Don't forget the cross border fee u pay thru paypal.

Can they use U.S. coupons in Australia?

You mean on ebay why they don't charge shipping sometimes? If that is your question probably because they built the shipping into the price like most things so that the listing looks better.

Advice please. A very high percentage of what I sell at my sales is food...much of which is cereal and junk food (crackers, cookies, snacks, etc.) A customer of mine has told me she will buy as much Raisin Bran from me as I can get her. Obviously, this means I have a choice to make...I can use all my Kelloggs coupons (when they can be applied to RB) to sell to her for a sure sale...or I can continue to buy a variety of Kelloggs cereals to meet the needs of more customers than just her.

Recommendations?

For me it would depend on what she pays vs. what you price items at gs for other customers to pay. I mean, if she pays you 50¢ and other customers pay $1.50 or whatever, there's your answer. If it's a wash, then at least she's a sure sale. :)

Rite Aid has 4ft tables for 29.99 this week. If you have a $3 survey coupon it's not bad and you can pay with UPs. Just a thought. :)

Thanks, but I live in the land of no Rite Aids. I did note that Target has the 6ft (fold in half) tables for $35 reg price. I'm going to pick up some with T GCs.

Thanks to all that have shared their totals for the weekend sales! I'm shooting for a Fri/Sat sale this next weekend!

How long did it take to build your stockpile/how often do you have a sale. I have been doing this for maybe 5 weeks give or take and have about 1400 items for sale now. My problem is I am allowed 1 garage sale every 6 months. Total fail. I am having one this coming weekend so I can get an idea of prices, traffic, and what is hot/not to concentrate on the future. With wags limiting people to 4 coupons now and publix 10 items a week it will start getting difficult to stockpile.

My last sale was in September 2010...I am in MI so I don't sell during the winter. I also had some foot problems which had me laid up for 8 weeks so i didn't get any shopping done for about 2 months. I used to do sales frequently at my house but I got tired of setting the stuff up in my garage. Those always do pretty good (maybe 700 for a short day) but since i have been doing these citywide sales I find it is much easier to just set up a couple times a year so my garage doesn't have prodct in it all summer long. I will do at least 1 more citywide sale this summer and one more in September. I tend to build a lot of stock in the summer (work for the schools so I am off all summer), than I do from September to May.

Keep in mind that while you might get a pretty good idea of some of the hot/not sellers, it also tends to change at different times of the year. Air Fresheners sometimes sit and don't sell at all and then I will have a sale and they fly out the door. Last time I sold out of J&J within hours and this time I sold about 1/2 of what I had. I guess my point is that just because something isn't moving to well this time. doesn't necesarily mean it won't sell next time (or vise versa).

Don't be overly conscious about what people think, and have fun.

Also, have what you are going to tell them ready b/c you will be asked. "Did you buy a store?"

Also, decide if you are going to offer discounts to those who ask or tell them no, you will be asked. And don't initially price too low. Don't be a dollar store, you underestimate yourself greatly!

Have great, readable signage. Find out where people get their gs info from and advertise there, no matter if it's $20 or free.

I'm so happy to read about everyone's sales this weekend. I did a community sale in Queens this Sat and broke our one day record with around $1200. Didn't think it was going to be so high. Morning was so slow, it got busy after 1pm unlike gs- ing. There were also two other Sellers with ds stuff, but i think we were cheaper and we obviously had a lot more stuff. Its also real stressful to sell on a NYC sidewalk very cramped and walking traffic.

Hot Sellers: cough drops $1-$1.5,
Emerson razors/ clippers $7-$8 and binoculars $5(clearances from RA),
reach crystal tb $1
Jf root $3(one lady bought 12 bottles)
H&S $3 (only had 4 but a few people asked for it)

Steady sellers: toothbrushes $2-$2.5
Toothpaste $2-$2.5
Method hand soap $2
Body wash $2.5-$3.5

Calling tomorrow to see about space at a church sale on 5/21. Still have a lot to sell

This post is the funniest thing I've read on SD to date (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=39382763&postcount=2016). Laughing so hard I could hardly breathe.

I was finally going to chime in about TLC's dumb-butt (trying to be good and not say the other word) EC show b/c people are now noticing my couponing at all the stores whereas before most people just ignore my couponing ways, but they retired the thread, anyone knows why?

Wow, 1000 toothpaste in a room dedicated to them ("and this is our oral health room"), I should go watch some clips on youtube, eh? Still haven't seen but bits and pieces. I think I only have a fraction of that many toothpastes, must... acquire... more... lol

I hope he really gives as much as he says he does to the troops... wow, imagine his tax deduction on his returns... the clip says he donated $50K in products last year, I wonder if the IRS audits him.

Congrats! :) I can't imagine moving stuff in NYC to sell, lugging the stuff around, etc. Kudos! Any tourist buying a binocular from you got a GREAT deal! :) I can see how in NYC you can sell toothbrushes $2-$2.5 and Toothpaste $2-$2.5, not around here although I usually sell brushes for $2 but this wknd I did 3 for $5 also to move 'em.

I hesitate to post my sale results because it seems so wimpy compared to some awesome totals posted (Congrats to everyone)... Mine was a garage sale, with just craigslist and email list advertising.
Sold $639 total! :bounce:
It started off dry, then rained most of the day, Saturday, so I know that kept some people away. :(
I had tables set up under canopy outside and when the rain started had to rearrange to keep it dry because the wind was blowing the rain in. Did pretty good in spite of that.
After I closed Saturday, my total was $389. But one customer came near the end and asked if she could make an appointment to bring her father on Sunday. She promised he would buy a lot of stuff. He ended up with a $250 purchase! :woot:
Sold out:
Thermacare $2
Canned nuts $2
Hormel chili .50
Lysol wipes $2
Tide 28 load? $4
Sardines .50 (all but the soy oil sold)
Rite Aid coffee $1
Folgers coffee $2.50
Sun powder detergent 10 load? $1

Good sellers:
Sharpies double 8pack $5
Nail polish $1
candy bars .50
windex $2
goody/scunci hair bands $1
toothbrushes $1
glade candles $1

Thank you, how does one answer that question?? I just love coupons and almost have RA in my basement :) hehe

It was not in a touristy area of NYC, people that went to my sale actually lived in the immediate area. I'm assuming people got the binoculars as a fun cheap item. For any items like that, always have one box open so people can try it out. Doing a real street fair in NYC is serious business, people make serious dough but it's highly competitive.

I used to sell the toothpaste for $1.50 each and they fly at that price, I can't get TP fast enough for all my sales so pricing it at $2+ sells just fine. If I still have stuff left for the fall sale at the same place, I'll discount it for $1.50. I also forgot, Tylenol Precise cream and patches were a steady seller at $3.50

Alright....

All that reading that I had to catch up on is all pretty amazing!!! A couple of huge 5k chunks. As, well as all of us with totals NOT enough to buy our own castle....

My weekend was the best weekend since last fall, and i sold at the indoor portion of the FM for 3 months this winter. The weather was mostly nice, and it wasn't the best oever of attendence, but it was good enough.

Did over $600 on sat and $1270 on sunday for about $1900 total.

Best seller was the 420 bottles of H&S I had. $3 each or 2 for $5. I had the same crazy vendors wanting it cheap first thing in the morning, on both mornings, but none bought at the full price, except for one. A shirt vendor bought $100 worth of H&S alone. He didn't buy to resell though. His large family uses it a lot, and he has been asking me for it for the last 6 months or so since last time.

Still have lots of stock in the rental shed at the FM, so I am hoping that the weather finally stays consistantly nice, so we can get the stuff sold. It's been holding back sales something bad.

Okay, the pricing round up. If you quote this, be sure to SNIP it! wayyyy too long to reply to without editing! LOL

So it really is astounding as to what sells at one sale, and doesn't at another. I definitely learned that PLACEMENT on the table is key. Our makeup was always a kind of slow seller for us, so I took the risk and used a good chunk of table space to display the makeup in little plastic shoebox totes right in the front... Colgate Advanced Total 4oz We have TONS and TONS left--- I'm marking it down to $1 for next time, this is getting ridiculous---- if it won't sell at this sale, it won't sell at ANY sale, we've learned that by now. I WISH I was able to stock up on the "crappy" colgate, but we weren't able to get in on the sale the last couple times they had it (we have to drive 1 hour into another state for the grocery store that runs the free toothpaste sales and were busy both weekends the sale was on. UGH)

Surprised that the box of gain powder didn't sell so hot at $4. Lowered stayfree to $1.50 and STILL have tons left. Scope Outlast moved slowly at $2.50. Big scope bottles also moved slowly at $2.50. Weird. Listerine zero moved okay at $2, but still have some left.

It seems like food products just weren't our forte this sale... like I said, each sale is different, you never know what will go one time and sit around the next. That's important to know as 1st time sellers--- don't freak and go slashing prices right away!!!!! As long as your product isn't expiring right away, wait it out a couple sales and see how it goes. Then you can cut prices as you see fit (Which is what I'm doing with this stupid free Colgate Advanced TP)

ETA: A couple pics of our setup--- it looks pretty overwhelming--- and it WAS! Took me forever to set it up this way--- several HOURS if I have to be honest. But the hardest part is figuring out how much STUFF you have to put out, how many of each product to display, and how much valuable space to allot to each thing. So you put out a bunch, then DH delivers another 10 boxes and you go "oh SHIT, I forgot about that stuff" and have to reshuffle everything, put some stuff away. It was ROUGH.
so youre basically set up in a flea market too. atleast i dont feel as wierd about it now.

I am very excited to here that everyone has done so well this weekend. I have been doing small sales, about 2 a month, since March and have made roughly $300/sale. This weekend I had my most successful sale and earned $1100.

Just wanted to update---- will give you all more details Monday. One thing that was GONE was the 2 pk thermacares for $2 and 1 pk for $1------ we had at least 50 of them--- people were just walking away with PILES of them

Awesome . Just awesome.
Getting the uhaul was totally worth it.
i actually live in cheektowaga...if you ever get more of the thermacares 2 ct for a 1.00...LET ME KNOW. i will most likely buy all of them. PM me when it goes down.

Thank you, how does one answer that question?? I just love coupons and almost have RA in my basement :) hehe

I've been asking multiple times if I

1) own a store -- no, I just like to shop, store's right here and then I just smile
2) coupon -- I always hesitate to say yes but end up just saying yes anyway b/c how else can I explain how I got so much stuff?

Btw, this GS is the first time I had my parents come help me and they did great. My mom's a whiz with numbers (she likes $, lol, she worked in sales her whole life until we immigrated from Asia) and she memorized my prices right away. She also suggested I lowered some stuff to move them like toothpaste and brushes were just $2 and people didn't buy, so it became 3 for $5 and same with Dixie plates (I have a lot but have didn't want to price them for less than $2 but I can do 3 for $5. Immediately got a lot more buyers. I do price lots of my stuff X for Y but didn't for those items and so she helped me moved them suggesting the new prices.

My dad's so funny. He apparently really likes to talk to people, esp. the kids (he retired from education recently), he was giving the kids a free spinal notebook and tell them to study hard, lol... then he points out that the pencils are not free though, lol... $1 so 2 for $1, I actually price all those school items $1 instead of 50c seeing it's not back to school time and I figure I can get more for them. He was also telling people the Lysol soap thingie is $15 at the store and here they can get it for just $5 and that got a few buyers (last time I had several people buy on their own saying, "oh what a great deal!" but this time people didn't know what that thing was). It's funny b/c my dad has no idea what that thing was before I told him and how much it costs, he was pushing it like he made it. LOL. They were my good helpers and I'll ask them to help again.

My mom's gonna get a nice mother's day gift ($) today, haha... when we do lunch. :)

wow, I wish I can move my Thermacare/Tylenol for that price. If I don't sell them for 2 for $5, I'll just give them to my parents' church's old people (I love them, I had a bunch of them at my wedding, old folks are usually nicer than people my age, lol) for Christmas. :D I actually prefer to give them to people who can use them than sell for less than half the retail which $2.50 is obviously.

How many times have you done this sidewalk sale thing? Does it cost $ or are you selling like they do in China town where people just set up? Sorry, I've only been to NYC once. I kept thinking you had to drag all your wares on your back and then had to tell myself of course she had a van or something, NYC = Manhattan in my mind, lol.

It's a joint effort with my husband and I, I have to admit. I do all the brain work, the shopping, the deal finding, etc--- I bring it home and he labels the prices and organizes the basement. He does ALL the heavy lifting (thank god, esp. since I had back surgery a year or so ago) and labels all the boxes.

I told him if we were getting the Uhaul he HAD to clearly label the boxes b/c we were going to have to "refill" our spots throughout the sale and I had to know at a GLANCE where the items were. So we put out some of each product and were paying attention to what was selling well and what we needed to refill--- it was crazy trying to sneak out from behind the tables to add merchandise when people are lined up trying to hand over money!

:) We are EXHAUSTED. lol. And even though we sold TONS, we still came home with a lot. :omg: My DH counted 95 paper boxes full of product to start--- we left 55 empty boxes there to be disposed of. That means we still came home with a LOT of boxes, let alone some plastic totes! wtf? It's crazy. He wants to be done for the summer, but I think we should try our hand just ONE day at the local flea market (even though I HATE that place.... lots of customers said we should do it, we'd do super well there. Although I don't like the heat and the sun.... blah)

Welllllllll we *are* planning on a cruise to Alaska next May. :D And then making babies. So... that's fun, right? lol

i told my DH that "Jen's dh helps her a lot, you have to step up..." So he went and watched a bunch of VV's for me last night, lol... and yes, he does do most of the organizing in the garage, thank God we don't label prices, I'd go nuts! :P The signs are enough for me to do... btw, I used your spreadsheet and it was a great help but there were some things that I was sure you'd have that I needed prices on last min and you didn't, lol... but I think others had them. You'd think I'd know prices better now but as DH says, WHY do you have A LITTLE of everything, too much variety in his words, but you know, I said, I just get whatever's hot... haha... I love the variety. :D He hates how nothing fits together, every shape and sizes, it drives him nuts since he's a civil engr things "must" fit together perfectly, needless to say, I'm more a whatever gal and he's anal. haha.. I said it.

Last I check, baby making's FREE! :D yes, even the stuff that helps with the baby making is free thanks to RA, right? :P Alaska though... yeah, that'll req $, both fun and yes, can be combined.

You could even combine the two :P

Now I just made $3500. I just had to learn that traffic sucks in my neighborhood and I need to haul my stuff to mode visible sale locatIons. But hey, some money is better than no money.

So I've got a serious deilemna:
I haven't worked in some time and have decided to try and sell some stockpile instead of just donating whatever we don't use. However we live in a small apartment building right on the road, and when I say on I mean there is my building, space for the cars to park and then the road. Next door is a vacant church with a nice sized parking lot, but the people from the barber shop across the street like to park there on weekends...we can move our two vehicles but thats not much space and no parking/shoulder to pull over and shop...both our parents live in no garage sale neighborhoods so I can't even beg to use their yards. Would you try with a table or two or work on renting space at a church bazaar or something?

I can totally relate to your problem - I live in the woods in the middle of nowhere on a dirt-road cul de sac. NOBODY drives down our street. It takes 10 minutes from the time you enter our development to get to our house. No joke, 10 minutes. Up a very steep hill with a couple of hairpin turns, across a one-lane bridge, etc etc. And once you get here, the driveway is 360 feet long and it runs alongside a 100-foot cliff (we do like our privacy). No way for cars to get past each other once they're in.

So, I don't ever bother holding a sale here, and I wouldn't recommend you do either -- UNLESS you can work out some kind of deal with whoever owns the church parking lot. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out (city hall, your local politician, maybe another church?). If you can work something out - maybe pay them a few bucks, then get something in writing saying you're allowed to take over the whole parking lot. Then just be really friendly with the barbershop folks and say sorry, I've got a special event this weekend, and they'll have to find someplace else to park (do some scouting and have some useful suggestions for them). And put up lots of signs beforehand so people know it's coming, and know they can pull in to the lot to park.

Failing that, you will probably end up doing what I do, which is piggybacking on whatever community sale I can find. It's very hit-or-miss -- I would love to sell more, but I find maybe 3 a summer. :(

ETA: A good place to find these events is Craigslist and also your local weekly shopper, the one that has almost no stories in it but lots of calendar listings.

I really envy you guys that can do it during community sales---everytime I've tried, I make anywhere from 600-1000 less than doing an off-weekend. I've changed locations--we live in the country, no one, and I mean NO ONE would come out here for a sale, so we used to tote everything to DHs gramma's house--nice 2 car garage, she's 99, no cars cause she never learned to drive, but she moved to the nursing home last fall and the daughters are trying to sell the house. Great location, very visible, lots of traffic, but no more sales there......realtor forbids it
So, have had last 2 sales at my SILs house, hard to find, not much traffic, my spring sale brought in just shy of $1000, but was cold and miserable. A lot of my regular buyers showed up (they recognize my ad) but instead of spending $50-100, they spent $10-20. I think the economy has a lot to do with it. I did put specific directions in the paper, which everyone commented on how easy it was to find with the directions, but wondering what I can do to increase my sales back to normal. Wanting a GS first weekend in June if I'm physically up to it!! This darn ear thing has wasted too much of my life and I'm really fed up with the whole thing!!
Anyway, CL is not an option, the bigger cities here in NE have listings, but I am about 60 miles from the bigger cities at a minimum and the one time I listed, I had scammers emailing and calling then my listing was removed as being too commercial............
Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Oh, that's cool they have rental sheds for rent, is it expensive? No need to haul things back and forth sounds good.
$100 a month.

Thanks for the tip on the signs with ARROWS---- We've never had luck selling things in bins on the floor due to all the traffic in front of our tables... but maybe the arrows will help!
Thanks!

Talking about Arrows (a bit late, still catching up), we do GREEN arrows on our signs and tell folks to look for them, makes us stand out and memorable, like MistyQ (where is she?) as the pink lady, I think it was her...

I'm going to try $2.50 on it. A couple of the scents are SO yummy. I know quite a few (adult) women who have trouble with back/arm acne during the summer -- I think it has a market beyond just the teen crowd. I'm predicting my Hispanic customers will like it because of the scents & colors (even though it's not a P&G product!).

I don't Wag anymore but couldn't find it at RA so will have to Wag for this, how do you guys deal with the high taxes. I hate paying for anything with my cc, at RA I pay with gift cards (earned from RA rebates) so wondering if you guys just deal seeing there's also no eating into tax, or whatnot. Thanks.

ps - tax is almost 9% and those bottles of C&C bw's are going to add up quick, which is why i ask, thanks.

no.
For the rg, they are still good for the deo. And it is all on sale again at the end of the month.

The H&S just happened to be on sale at a local grocer in my area, so I am using some there for only 25 cents more per pair.

Well, I've decided to take a break for awhile, due to health reasons. So, I'm trying to find a buyer for my entire stockpile. I've listed an ad on Craigslist and a local website. I've got pics from my old flea market booth, and I'm currently working on making an inventory sheet, then coming up with a price. I posted preliminary ads last night, stating that I was selling out, and would post later with more info and price. And I already have one person asking questions. I'm really hoping I can just sell it all at one time. As I'm unable to continue hauling it and dragging it around to different area sales. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

So I have been thinking about becoming an official seller, I am a FT student so this would be perfect since I can do it on my own time and I am sure I could make more money than a PT job.

I have done two sales at home now and have made pretty good profit on both. I am moving back to Las Vegas next week so that would be where I would sell. There is an indoor flea market, outdoor, and I will have a house to have sales at (though I am renting so it couldn't be often). What is the best option, in you opinion? EDIT: The indoor flea market is $565/mo for 10x10 (open fri, sat, sun, 10am-6pm). I would probably only open two weeks a month, seems kinda high.

Do you have to claim any of this, is there a limit when it becomes a "business", I was thinking of renting a FM booth but not sure if they need a license or to report income, etc. If it's a touchy subject, please PM me.

Also, is there anyone from Vegas who already does sales? There aren't anymore RA's left so I am extremely sad, it's my favorite store. Do you think it's possible to be a seller without a RA nearby?

Just debating my options, any input is appreciated!

Hi,

Daughter and I were searching for a GS this weekend in an area where we didnt know the streets- it was listed on CL, but we found their signs easily because they had them stuck into the ground with the cheap dollar store pinwheels attached. The spinning shiny twirls were a great eye catcher and we plan on trying them whenever we have a sale.

We are having a yard sale this Saturday, and after reading this thread, I'm wondering if I should raise some of my prices. My best sellers are usually:

Toothbrushes $1
Toothpaste $1-$2 depending on size/type
Shampoo/conditioner/stylers $2
Deodorant $1

I know it depends on the area and whatnot, but are these prices too low? It's easy to throw all deodorant in a bin marked $1 each instead of individually pricing, but it would be worth pricing them if I could get more for better brands, I guess. I thought $1 was about right for toothbrushes, but some of them are almost $5 in stores! I mark the Colgate Total 4 oz $1 and then go up from there--too cheap?

I'm torn between "it was all free, so mark it to move it," and "but maybe I COULD get more for that." Any advice? TIA!

Reps for the awesome idea!!! I always have trouble figuring out the sign issue and don't want to spend too much money on GS signs. I'm doing this from now on.

I am a small-timer compared to most and I live in an area that doesn't tolerate $3 body washes..... sooooo.... I also price toothbrushes at $1 (no difference in quality/brand), toothpaste at $1-$1.50 depending on size, shampoo at $2 (except for H&S) and deodorant at $2. Even after tax, I figure I'm making at least 90% profit and I don't have the storage so I just live with it. I know that I'm technically selling a $5 toothbrush for $1 but sometimes grocery stores will sell them for $2 on special, so I'd rather they buy it from me. Oh, and BTW, I used to sell all toothpaste and deodorants at $1 and raised it for the first time last weekend and all of it sold. Most thought very hard about buying it for $2 but they'd end up taking it anyway. If you see they're not selling, you could always start staying "$2 but if you buy 4, I'll give them for $1.50/ea" - - I did that after 11 AM when I wanted to start packing and it worked like a charm. I got rid of my stock and sold stuff I would've had to pack back in. HTH!

I use to work in a bank and can tell you the biggest thing is the 'feel' of the bill and that the ink never dries on 'real' bills. If you take a real bill and rub it on a white piece of paper part of the ink will rub onto the paper. If it doesn't feel right I wouldn't take it.

For market requirments, you would have to check your local & sate laws and the requirements of the market's owner.

From what I remember, there are several couponers here on SD that are located in vegas, which means there are a lot of lurkers too!! I can't remember if any of them sell at markets or garage sales. But searching for "stockpile" on craigslist LV, brought up several different stockpile garage sales, so my thought is that there is probably people at the markets also.

That all being said, it looks like you will have one heck of a challange on getting started there.

Now as far as rent goes, at $565 a month, that is pretty high and a 10x10 space is pretty small. You can fit about 3 table in a U-shape in a 10x10. I had a 10x10 corner spot all winter and still could only fit 3 tables. For only selling two weeks a month that makes it even more important to move a lot of product wehile you are there. In order for you to move a lot of product, you will have to be the cheapest, or at least near the cheapest, seller at the market.

Now, your pricing.
Considering the cost of coupons, maybe tax, gas, your time, for a free product is probably around 50 cents an item.
Sell that item for $1.00 and you've doubled your investment.

You will have to sell 1130 of those items to break even with the rent. Not counting the gas to get your stuff to market or business liscense costs if needed.

To be fair, some items you can get more than $1 for, But some items will also cost a little more OOP and some items sell faster and/or slower than others, so we could maybe trim that down to about 700. I wouldn't go much below that because there are always going to be items that won't sell or you have to give away.

Now, that is to break even with out considering a PT Job. Say a PT job gets about $10 per hour for a student in LV (I am guessing, could be more or less in vegas...Could be a lot more if you are very sexy;)). Now $10 x 25 hours = $250 less 30% in tax = $175 net, per week x 4 = $700, which means another 1400 items to break even against a part-time job.

So that is appox 2000 items per month, or 1000 items per week to sell. Which is an average of buying 500 items a week.

Now you might disagree with my base numbers, but if you look at it that way, and adjust the numbers to what you think you would actually spend and sell for, you can come up with a number that can help you make a decession.

The best selling statagy is consistant variety. There must also be lots of foot traffic at market.

To rely on couponing for your ONLY source of income is putting a heavy burden on yourself and your stock demands. I started doing this to help feed my family when I lost my job. Luckily, I had help in the form of unemployment income and my wife's income.

I still went back to work at my regular job when I had the chance. While there a people that do this as hobby, there are very few that can sustain a lifestyl on it. In fact, the couponing world would not be what it is without Stay At Home Mom's (SAHM's), who usually have another source of income coming into the household.

All this may sound like I am being a "Negative Nellie", but i don't want you to think that this is a life of riches and fun. Mostly it is just sharing and bragging of the good times.

This is only my story, NOT the bible of couponing.:sleepy:

I wouldn't just use a pen see this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counterfeit_banknote_detection_pen

Counterfeit pens contain an iodine-based ink. They can be used to detect counterfeit Swiss franc, euro and United States banknotes amongst others. Typically, genuine banknotes are printed on paper based on cotton fibers, and do not contain the starches that react with iodine. When the pen is used to mark genuine bills, the mark is yellowish or clear. Counterfeit pens are most effective against notes printed on standard printer or photocopier paper.[1]

Pen manufacturers claim such pens will detect a great majority of counterfeit bills,[2] but critics suggest the effectiveness is much lower. Critics claim that professional counterfeiters use starch-free paper, making the pen unable to detect the majority of counterfeit money in circulation.[3] Magician and skeptic James Randi has written about the ineffectiveness of counterfeit pens on numerous occasions[4][5] and uses a pen as an example during his lectures.[6] Randi claims to have contacted a United States Secret Service inspector and asked whether the pen works as advertised, to which the inspector replied "it is not dependable."[4] The Secret Service does not include such pens in their guidelines for the public's detection of counterfeit US currency.[7]

US counterfeiters bleach small denominations and print more valuable bills on the resulting blank paper to evade this test,[8] although changes to the currency since 2004 have made this method easier to detect. This is one reason that many currencies use different sized notes for different denominations.

Olay facial wipes, facial scrub-I was thinking $2, same as my Biore items?
Ziploc and Hefty baggies -$1.50?

Purex 150 oz. $2?

I am having a sale this weekend and trying to decide what to price the 150 oz Purex at. It's 100 loads. I usually sell the 32 loads fairly steady at $3 each. I have right around $1 into each bottle and have about 25. What seems like a good price? I don't want to haul them back upstairs with me if I can avoid it. I was thinking $5, but it seems low. This was all great advice for those starting to get into the GS/FM world. I am small potatoes (2x/year, tiny stockpile) and even I view it as a way to keep feeding the addiction ;)

I took a year-long break during my pregnancy/newborn stage and only got back into it because I refused to pay full price for diapers. The way I see it now is that I buy cheap diapers, cheap food, and other items I need and the GS $$ helps me with the OOP to keep going.

Those do not work on bills that have been altered in a manner to increase the value.
We were given a $50 as change at a CVS, it was checked with a pen and passed, only to fail at the bank. The bill was a $5 that was turned into a $50 and a good looking one at that. The paper was correct so the pen was correct. The watermark was the big tip off which I didn't check.

Not a typo on the Dial I have. I got these a month or so ago at CVS. The 12 oz are listed on Walmart.com for $3.97 so maybe price at $1.75 or $2. I think it would depend on how much you want to get rid of them. They are new so may not be a lot of people who are familar with the product.

Curel Ultra Healing Moisture Lotion for Extra-Dry Skin, 13 fl oz Walmart has it online $5.47 Was $6.54. So I'd price at $2.75 or more depending on your area.

Wow, that was a lot of research and information, thanks for helping me. I agree the rent is too high indoors but the outdoor swap meet is $30 per day eeach weekend, I think I would do a few days a month to avoid the permanent seller license requirement.

I am not doing this as my only source of income, I do get financial aid and loans, mainly loans. I also do a little freelance writing, so I am hoping I can write for the same publication I used to when I lived in Vegas. That gets me by but I would like to do sales for spending money. I know it's a lot of work but one thing I do have is time, so i'm sure that will help. A little nervous about the competition but at the very least I know I can get some repeat customers(friends + acquaintances) that will purchase $100+ a month. Might have to just let them come "shop" my stockpile.

Thanks for all of the advice, repped!

Do these prices seem fair for these products? Finally getting to pricing items for GS on June4th so might be asking for pricing help as i get to items i bought months ago :)

Large Dial proskin lotion-$2?
Large Olay Lotion-$3?
Olay facial wipes, facial scrub-I was thinking $2, same as my Biore items?
Ziploc and Hefty baggies -$1.50?
Almay lipstick -$1.50 or $2?
I think am going to price all my Almay mascaras at $3 and other cosmetics (eyeshadow, concealer) at $2
Purex 150 oz. $2?
Dial Nutriskin Replenishing Lotion 21 oz $2.50
Olay facial wipes, facial scrub $3

Makeup seems about right. I generally will do the ones priced $6 or under for $2-$3 and the more expensive for $3-$4 depending on the product.

Thanks for the help and repped :) Think i am going to up the price of the 150 oz. Purex to $5. Anyone have luck with Purex?? I know i sold much smaller bottles of wisk for $3 last year and it FLEW!! Sold all the bottles to the first 3 customers! Not sure if Purex will move as well though.

One thing to consider if doing the out door swap meet is the weather. It's going to be hot during the Summer and cold in the Winter. I'd try and see how well you can do without doing the swap meet route first. Word of mouth can gain you quite a few 'regular' customers. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to have you 'shop' for them at 50% off CVS/Wags prices. It's a little more work to take special orders but it can help when you've got ECB/RR's to spend and don't know what to spend them on.

Oh, I wasn't aware of the outdoor. If you can just pay that price when you only sell that day, then that makes much more sense. Def go that route to get things started and building stock..... Now, you just have to deal with the othe SD shoppers in the area... maybe gambling is a better opportunity... seems that might have to be an option in my area also.

just wondering if you guys leave on the store price stickers on items. Wonders if it helps them buy when realize they are getting $12 hair dye for only $5 ;-) .
Yes, I leave the store prices on there. I feel like it "shows" people how good of a deal they are getting.

not a good idea.
its when you get it for around .50 or less you can make $ at that price. and besides, what happens if you get stuck with it? would you be willing keep it in your pantry or use it? because to pay $1.xx and some odd change oop even to use it isnt a good deal, unless i had to have it. and 5 bottles lasts awhile if you did decide to keep it.

Haha, I say go for it! And actually, thats one way I made extra money when I previously lived in Vegas, I played small stakes poker, didn't make much by any means but it paid about the same as a crappy retail job and I got out of the house.

Find out where people get their gs info from and advertise there, no matter if it's $20 or free.
i think telling them i order it by the pallets or yes i bought somw from a warehouse is the best idea. it is unethical to tell someone you do it with coupons. then everyone wants to do it and make $$ and the stores drop the limits like they did this yr. yet im still shaking everytime i go to the flea market in PA, i fly. its where we got our stand set up. Has anyone ever been arrested for always reselling p&g, kimberly clark products ect.? my friend says not to worry about it. but my uncle was arrested 3 yrs ago for the coach bootleg handbags, and im wanting to make sure im not in the REDzone or be caught with my pants down standing next to a police officer. someone enlighten me here.

I can see how it's not a good idea - I don't want any competition either - but how is it unethical? Was it unethical when I bought a $20 pair of jeans, then lost weight, and I'm now selling them at my garage sale? I mean, it's the same premise. I bought the product. I don't have a use for it anymore. I sell the product.

The **bootleg** handbags is another story. The USDOJ prosecutes intellectual property crimes. Here's a recent case: http://www.justice.gov/criminal/cybercrime/zhuArrest.htm (http://www.justice.gov/criminal/cybercrime/zhuArrest.htm)

I agree...once you buy something, you can use it, give it away, sell it, or trash it if you want--it belongs to you.

When people ask me, I always tell them I do couponing. I've had tons of family members, friends, and strangers in stores ask me, "How do you get all this stuff for free?" It amazes me that every one of them expects me to stand there and explain it, as though it's as easy as a one-sentence answer. But 99% of people (maybe more!) are too busy, unorganized, lazy, or whatever to ever do couponing to the extent that we do.

So don't feel like telling the truth is going to make your customers into your competition. It's actually kind of a good thing to tell people, because they'll realize that your sale is not a one-time "I just closed my store" sale--they can continue shopping at your sales for as long as you keep couponing. If they can't/won't do it themselves, they can still get a bargain from you.

I just seen today that our community is going to have a garage sale soon :) yay lots of things to be done away with.....what does anyone price an avg. variety of phys formula? im thinking 4.00? eyeshadow, foundation, bronzers...

I find that makeup never sells for more than $2 for me, no matter how expensive it is. Since I never actually pay for it, I don't mind the price discrepancy, but YMMV.

Haha, I say go for it! And actually, thats one way I made extra money when I previously lived in Vegas, I played small stakes poker, didn't make much by any means but it paid about the same as a crappy retail job and I got out of the house. Thanks for the advice on selling, Im going to try it with the product I have now (about $700 worth) before I go crazy hitting every store in Vegas (since i'm not a shelf cleaner). =)

I'm not sure how the re-selling business at the swap meet is but I can tell you garage sales can be quite lucrative in the Vegas area. I've had three and made over $1600 each time. I've also built up regular customers over time and make over $1,000 a month with that. There are so many stores to shop at that it's really easy to store hop for shopping and you can amass quite a bit in a very short time since there all over the place.

Anyone have those Hormel Compleat meals (shelf stable, microwaveable) from that one crazy week at RA last fall? I have quite a few, and totally forgot to put them out for sale at my last GS.

Any pricing advice? thanks! :)

TGIF didn't move at 75 cents, a few more Stacks got sold, so I might just keep the rest for ourselves, less than 10 left.

TGIF I plan to make them $1 again and do BOGO, do BOGO work well? I would think psychologically, just for the free one people would pay for the first one. That way I can make them take 2 for $1 instead of sell them 50c each and people only buy 1 to try. Eh? ;)

<p>I find that makeup never sells for more than $2 for me, no matter how expensive it is. Since I never actually pay for it, I don't mind the price discrepancy, but YMMV.

I sold a bunch of Revlon nail polish $1.50 or 4 for $5 and eye shadow/lip gloss (too low in retrospect, might have to up the price a bit) for $2 or 3 for $5.

I managed to sell a couple PF bronsers for $4 each. If they don't want it, I'll just save and give as gifts as they're expensive and a nicer brand (than say Revlon).

Medicines like that do not sell for me at ALL. I think people do not recognize what it is. I don't even try to sell them anymore. That's ok. I bought them in the first place because they were a moneymaker :D I need to find somewhere to donate them. Battered Women's shelter does not want anymore.

That is what I figured on them, but I am going to try. I will donate if they don't go in this sale. I wish my dad would let my mom use them but he won't because they smell so bad.

I was going to try Amazon but have never sold on Amazon so kind of scared to test the waters :) I have mine listed for $5 at the FM and I think I have sold 1! I really need to list on Amazon or Ebay. Thanks for reminding me about the Neuragen.

Thought I would ask again since our sale is tomorrow. I know it is not stockpile stuff but we have dozens of DVDs I would love to get rid of. Many of them are still wrapped. This includes disney movies to pirates of the carribean to harry potter all the way to regular stuff like rush hour series and the bourne series. I want to get as much as I can but also do not want it to sit all day. What would be some good prices? I take it disney should be priced a bit more?

Tons of vendors and my market always yelling "CD's are only one dollar" "Tons of DVD's only $3 each".

I would try for $5 on the proglide razors. The gift sets only have 1 cartridge. The regular manual package has 2 cartridges. That is the best selling point of all for those razors.... Of course, I have lots of the full size proseries lotions and washes that don't sell for $1.50 in my market.

Those who like the power (Very few compared to manual) know that $5 is still a good deal.

Something to take into consideration when pricing your stuff is whether or not you are really a "garage saler," or someone who does this all the time. I priced my stuff very reasonably because I do one a year (3-day subdivision wide sale). People who do regular sales can afford to price things a bit higher because if they don't sell, they can just try again in a week or two. My goal is to get rid of as much as possible, especially if it's something I don't really use/need.

QUOTE=astonemo;39540293]Having my first sale of the season this weekend and trying to find some info on Neuragen. Anyone had luck selling this? At what price? I tried to search the thread bud didn't find anything. If I missed it would love help being pointed in the right direction.[/QUOTE]

I sold a few for $2, but I mostly gave them away to another SDer. Gave her about 20 for her family, then have the rest boxed up for her. I encourage those with extra to think of doing the same--charge shipping and a few bucks for tax, etc., but feel good about it going to someone who needs it!

I was only able to sell a few new DVDs for $3-$5. If you own a house, it may actually be more profitable to donate them to the library and take the write off.

That seems to be the nature of CL anymore...bunch of weirdos. Everyone seems to have some sort of sob story. It's quite ballsy for someone to contact you and tell you to give them stuff. :omg: Just so I can sleep better at night I always offer a little something seeing as SOMETIMES bad situations really do happen. In this situation I would have said if you have things left you would sell them toothpaste for $x amount and deodorant, etc. for $x amount. (Something you feel is reasonable but still a discount off your original price.)

I would ONLY do this if there is something left over that you were just planning to donate/get rid of anyway.

By no means do you have to do this, I'm just saying this is what I would do in this situation. I know we've all become quite skeptical of everyone these days but as I said, sometimes bad things really do happen.

Your location sounds good to me, minus the yardsale thing. ;)
church is for sale...not policed at all and broken into at least once a month...church always was lenient on parking there so long as it wasn't a function night/day. I've been going down the list of people who I know and could borrow their yard....:D

CL is all about weirdoes and vigalante flagging. Drives me bonkers. I normally just ignore the weird responses. Lots of junk resellers want to pickup leftovers from yardsales and will haul off anything leftover. Just as many posts in the free section for entire sale leftovers so they figure nothing ventured nothing gained.

:eek:I am starting my annual neighborhood garage sale now. One guy asked the price of H&S and I told him 2 for $5. He then asked for 2 for $4. I replied to him that walmart price is like $4.74/each and he told he back that walmart has to pay labor and overhead fees blah blah but I don't. So far I have only 1 customer and I sold 4 wisks to her at $2.50/each.

I have been having a couple hagglers so far. They said something like they are expecting lower prices. I do have a direct competition in my neighborhood though. She does fleamarket every week.

My prices are:
colgate sensitive: $2 or 3 for $5
air wick (free from wagreens): $3
proglide razor (manual): $4
biore cleanser and strips: $3
reach floss and 3-pack ivory bar: 75 cents
noxzema and bic razors (4-pack 3 comfort bic): $2
H&S: 2 for $5

As others said:
Tell them that they don't have to shop with you. They can get stuff elsewhere if they want to.
You don't have to give out bargins and lower prices unless you want to. But you would really want to move it. You could alwys lower your prices later or re-advertise that your prices are lower, but only if you really really want/need to move it.

PLUS:

What I have come to find after doing sales s lot of weekends over the past 2-3 years. The first people there are ALWAYS there to get the best deals @ the cheapest prices they can....ALWAYS.

For a couple reasons.
1. Either they are looking for stuff to resell on ebay/amazon, at a flea market or garage sale, or even in there B&M store (Like a corner grocery or thrift).

2. They are just very frugal shoppers and some of the cheapest people around....like some of us.

You should almost always reject the first couple/few of hours of low-ballers. Some might be resonable offers, in your opinion, and you have to set your own rules/limits. As the sale goes on and stuff isn't moving, depending on how fast you want to move it, you can give out better deals.... still your choice.

ALSO:
There are a lot of people that go out late closer to closing of the sale. These people can also be one of the two kinds of low-ballers as above. These people know that some people "Just want to get rid of it" and will often times give away super deals at/near the end of the sale/day.

Same as the low-ballers on ebay and craigslist (Sometimes even the very same people will email, then show up in person) they will do it to everybody they can because they know they will get hits and score from some people.

When cvs used to do the new release deal (buy $25 of something get the movie for $4.99 and such) I would sell those for $10-12. Disney dvds should sell decently for $10 if they are classics/popular. I would maybe try $8 or 2/$15 on the unopened if they are better movies. Openned DVDs I would do $4 or 3/$10.

I haven't had great luck selling DVDs at my garage sale, but I have used a site online called secondspin. Most of their offered trade-in values were more than what I could ask at a garage sale. Just another option to consider if the DVDs don't move this weekend!

I had a guy like that--it was my first sale and I had all toothpaste marked $1, and he wanted it 2/$1 because he claimed he could get it for $1 at Wal-Mart (since when?). I told him Wal-Mart is open all day, and he left...lol. The toothpaste was flying out of there at $1, so why would I mark it down?

The haggling hasn't been too bad at our yard sales, but we did the flea market last summer and it was AWFUL. I don't mind giving an off-the-top discount, like if the total comes to $23 and they say, "Will you take $20?" But people at the FM want a discount on each individual item...by the time they finish shopping, those discounts add up! DH cannot be trusted alone with my goods--my mother had our kids for the day and they came to the FM for a visit so I could nurse the baby. I was sitting in the front seat of the van with the window open a crack, and I could hear DH selling my $4 foot insoles for $1! He tried to say no, but the woman was so pushy, and kept saying, "You take a dollar, you take a dollar!" Notice that was not a question. He offered $3, she said $1. He offered $2.50, she said $1. He said he couldn't go lower or his wife would kill him, she said $1. He eventually agreed just to get rid of her. Needless to say, our 3-year-old knows which parent to go to when she wants something. ;)

I hate the hagglers too- and I think there are more when selling outdoors than indoors (at FM) I hate the confrontation. I actually like it when a haggler is rude because its a lot easier for me to say NO than it is to others who ask nicely!

And my DH can also not be trusted alone. He will say yes because all that matters to him is making money. I think if he had to do all of the clipping and organizing and shopping that I must do, he'd realize why I hold a bit more value to the items and don't want to just give it away!!

Sale starts at noon but I decided I was bored so put some signs out early. Only 4 people so far but they are averaging around $10 per transaction. Everyone did say my prices were great so I hope things go well. My biggest problem is foot traffic as my neighborhood is small .

Update: a hispanic driving a very nice car (much nicer than mine) looked at Proglide razor and told me she thought it was $2:eek:. because it was next to the $2 razor bin. I am really sick of these people.

My DH is mad at me because I have invested a lot of time into stockpiling.
It's gonna happen a lot. It does get sickening awfully fast also.

What you also have to watch is if you price by table or bin, like "Everything on this table is $1" & "this table is $2", people will move stuff to the lower priced tables. then pick it back up when your looking to try & get the lower price. I always say no & tell them "Ah, someone probably moved it to the different table to try & scam me later. It actually belongs over here...Sorry about that!"

Always being nice will help you keep you sales up, becasue some people will stay & pay the price when the low-ball is declined, but when pissed, most will just leave.

What you have to do to keep your sanity and good demeanor, is to start having fun with them:

Say any of these with a smile on your face:

"I wish I could sell that low and get rid of it all, but it would probably be already gone and you wouldn't any at this price either... Sorry!"

"Seriously, you can go check the price at walmart.... I might have some left when you get back....Sorry!"

"Wow! That is a really low price! Do you wanna re-sell it or something? I can't afford to just give my money away like that....Sorry!"

"I sold all the other ones at my price and that is all I have left.... Sorry!"

"Maybe you would be interested is this other brand/type that is already in that price range...Sorry!"

If they keep insisting and being pushy "Hey, your just wasting your time! I can't sell it any lower.... But your putting on a pretty good show.... Sorry!"

It really does get easier the more fun you have with it. See what they will take back..

If they get mean.... 'Get the **ck out of my face a-hole!"

I do this. I'm the kind of starts slashing prices during the last hour because I'd rather have cash in hand....... but then again......

It's gonna happen a lot. It does get sickening awfully fast also...................

 Yeah, I have people showing up at 7 AM offering 50¢ for razors :shake: It's the name of the game, honestly, specially for garage sales. They do not expect to leave out of there paying over $5 for a bag-full of stuff. Yes, I do give discounts and I also start slashing prices at the end of my garage sale because I only do them 1-3x year but I do not appreciate being offended by such ridiculous low-balls.

If they offer $1 for a ProFusion, I tell them "No, sorry. That one is $4 but here are these other ones for $2 if you're interested" and walk away. The way I see it, they're grown ups and can make their own decisions.

Been open for a couple hours. Only had about 9 people so far with around $220 in sales so for the few that show they are spending. I have sold no razors, no H&S even at $5/2, no clean and clear bq, and no RG bw. I did sell 3 maalox at $2 each and some splenda for $2 and 3 nivea mens bw at $5/3. I have pantene at $2.50 but have sold none also. I sold 14 disney movies at $4 and my cleaning supplies have been moving heavily. Clorox toliet bowl cleaner at $1 is going like crazy. I told out of all tilex cleaning supplies at $1.5. A note of humor. Using the publix deals I got pickle jars for .15 each and am selling for $1. Over half are gone now and all my red classico sauces for $1 are gone also. Hoping business picks up after work and tomorrow but for the few we get they are spending because my deals are about 50% off walmart prices.

Ahh you make me feel better! Another customer asked for 2 for $4 for H&S. I said no and then she still got 2 but then she asked how much if she just bought one. I told her $3 if she bought one. She then got 2 anyways and started picking 1 Noxzema razor and then asked me how about $5 for 3 items. I then said no and she just got 2 H&S.

It's gonna happen a lot. It does get sickening awfully fast also.

I have over 1500 items lol so how does that 5 seconds actually help. This is aggravating. A few thoughts from my sales the last few weeks:

1 - The first sale may be slow, however, the next time you will have more business.
2 - Advertising is crucial. I had a sale the first Saturday of the month, however, I only advertised one day on Craigslist and didn't put up any signs, so I only made $650.
3 - When piggybacking on a neighborhood sale, make sure not all the neighborhoods are having their sale on the same day. My friend and I put our stuff out at her neighborhood sale and it was slow, I think because people were spread a little too thin. Made $750 last weekend.
4 - Opened again today at friends house, to see if we'd have more customers without the neighborhood sale. We listed on craigslist and sent to our email list that we had built up at prior sales. We made it an 8-12 sale only and everything flew. My cut was $480 today.
5 - People who come the first time and don't buy a lot will come back next time and buy A LOT more. Had one woman today come back and spend $100. Said she was at Walmart getting same stuff and realized the value. They will remember you!
6 - Don't give up. Keep trying and find the prices that work for your area. :)

I know I'm not as seasoned as some but this is what I've learned since my first sale last October.

BTW - Our total for the sale both weekends for my friend and I combined was $2785. Add my $650 from the previous week to that and we made $3435 in three weekends. Not too bad!

Have you tried Ebay? Just list a BIN price and Best Offer - you may be surprised.

Medicines like that do not sell for me at ALL. I think people do not recognize what it is. I don't even try to sell them anymore. That's ok. I bought them in the first place because they were a moneymaker :D I need to find somewhere to donate them. Battered Women's shelter does not want anymore.

Amazon is asking top dollar for the Neuragen - if anyone has experience w/Amazon, maybe they can educate us.

I was going to try Amazon but have never sold on Amazon so kind of scared to test the waters :) I have mine listed for $5 at the FM and I think I have sold 1! I really need to list on Amazon or Ebay. Thanks for reminding me about the Neuragen.

Update: 2 people in 3 hours. Sold around $100 between the 2 of them so averaging over $30 per person that shops which is great but need more people. RG bw, C&C bw, air wicks, H&S, and razors are a dude. Only razor I have sold is a $5 proglide power comfort pack. I moved all those bics over to the $2 table to see if it sparks any interest. With only 11 people today however I am not sure my prices are the problem. they are buying and loving the sales when and if they show up.

dead day for me here. Probably because I have direct competition who has been building up her customer through email list. I think I need to stop couponing because my DH got mad at me since I bought more stuff than I could sell. Also coupon prices are getting ridiculously high so even thought the items are free but I have to factor in coupon costs, gas, and pre-coupon tax here.

if your selling in a garage put out a "display" of large items ie: large crest mouthwash or windex on a table at the end of the driveway. this works well for my sales.

As someone who has been in sales, I would recommend you try not to get too much into a discussion with people on the prices. It will just wear you out. I can tell you that NO MATTER WHAT YOU CHARGE, some people will always try to negotiate with you. You could have had the H&S for 2/$1 and someone would ask you to sell them for 3/$1 or 4/$1.

Try to smile, and be firm. Experience is the best teacher, and if you do this many times, it will be old hat for you. You won't even blink an eye when someone offers some crazy price.

Do you all ever get weird replies to your craigslist ad? I got one asking to give them what I had left. Said they had 4 kids and 5 kids coming to live with them next week that were kidnapped by a family member. I'm a softy but not that gullible.

I'm the type that feels bad for the guy on the side of the road with the cardboard sign.

But, then I ask myself, if I would do that (beg people for money/items/etc.)? And, I honestly would NOT unless it was life or death. Otherwise, I would always try to find some way to work to earn money.

If someone e-mailed you and asked if they could HELP OUT at your garage sale in exchange for some goodies, that would be one thing (not that you would actually want someone you don't know handling your money, etc.) But you get the idea of what I mean.

I think I'd be inclined to respond, "Sure, I'll give you some leftovers, in exchange for mowing my lawn and weeding my yard." That should "weed" out the scammers. ;)

Needless to say, our 3-year-old knows which parent to go to when she wants something. ;)

To quote one of the best lines from the movie Boiler Room:

"A sell is made on every call you make. Either you sell the client some stock, or he sells you on a reason he can't. Either way, a sell is made. The only question is: who's gonna close? You or him?!"

In your situation, that lady made the sale. Sounds like you are smart :glasses2: to be the one to take over the sales.

I want to say thank you for everyone who has posted such helpful advice and information!! I had 2 garage sales last year and I am planning 2 more this year.
I definitely agree that the more sales you have the better you do. My second sale was much better than the first, because I had a lot of repeat customers who remembered the first sale.

One thing I wanted to add, regarding people moving items on tables and claiming they are the lower price... I actually put little price stickers on most of my items. I do as many ahead of time as I can, and then when it is slow during the sale, I just keep adding them. That eliminates a lot of confusion and problems. I also have a lot of customers who do not speak English, and they tend to not buy things unless the price sticker is on the item.

Good Luck!!!

Just had a little mini sale, I only posted on CL this morning. Had 4 customers in 4 hours. 2 of them them showed up right at the start time and I was totally unprepared (still getting items out). Ended up with about $150 in sales and hardly a dent in my stockpile.
All my Classico pasta sauces sold, started at .75, but marked them $1 later. Had tuna out for 3/$1 and sold those all. Sold my Lysol hand things for $4 each (marked for $6, but she haggled me down).
Might try the flea market next time...

Ok, so you are all pretty much amazing. I know how to coupon, but never find the time and have lost a decent source for free/cheap inserts. BUT, I just lost my job this week and am wondering if I should try to get back into it all. I have a stockpile, but it services simply my family needs.

How long do you all stockpile before a sale? How many stores are you shopping at? I have a lot of stores around me, but it's just a matter of finding the TIME to get to them. It can be really challenging, but may be worth the trip. Within 10-15 miles of my home I have at least 1 Target, Walmart, Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens.

My mind gets a bit dizzy trying to keep track of it all, especially since my main source of coupons right now is printables. :(

First day of sale. 8 hours and $300. We have normal yard sale items too and I haven't been keeping that money separate from stockpile stuff. DH thinks it's great but I'm not so impressed. LOL

I still have a ton of stuff and some items barely moved. May possibly need to look into doing the market thing.

I stockpiled all winter and plan on having 3 sales this summer. I gave away a ton to family, 2 best friends, homeless shelter and the battered women's shelter and still have lots left :) I only have Target, Walmart and Walgreen's and I never clear the shelves or go crazy. If you also have CVS and Riteaid , you should be able to build up stockpile pretty quick I would think.

Have you tried Ebay? Just list a BIN price and Best Offer - you may be surprised.

Anyone at all have any melatonin left from the wags deal several months ago, $3 IPQ for $3 product, get $3 RR? I bought a gazillion of them...........paid for sodas, TP (paper, not paste) and assorted goodies forever with those RR.........I could not sell more than 2 or 3 per GS, so I did do the EBay route........down to about 10 left........not making a lot after offering free shipping, but I am shipping 4-5 orders out daily, so am making more than I had them marked for GS..........Also sold out of Resveratrol from Wags last fall/early winter deal...........worth a try if not able to move it at GS.
For those with diabetic meters they can't move, they will also sell on the 'bay for decent money...........just a thought.........

Was it necessary to say Hispanic? Really? Would you have said "a white woman driving a very nice car"?

Not to get into an ethnic debate here, but most of the time, I would rather the Hispanics come into my GS (if they leave their 14 kids in the car) as they SPEND and most in my area will not haggle, they pay the price marked.......without crabbing about the prices. They know I am much cheaper than HellMart. When they don't leave the 14 kids in the car, I'd just as soon they leave, as the kids pocket stuff and I find it hard to keep my eyes in 20 different directions :O

I have to pay for my kids braces and walmart doesn't, so my prices should be higher than walmart. :D

Just curious if Friday yard sales are worthwhile for anyone here...it would never occur to me to have a weekday yard sale, but I suppose there are plenty of stay-at-home parents, unemployed people, and retired people, so maybe it could be okay?

Boy, I'm just finding something to comment on as I keep reading......
Yes, I do great on Friday sales, it's payday here for all of the factories, so the wives come in the AM, the 2nd shift folks get paid Thursday night, so they have plenty of cash first thing on Friday AM, the Saturday sales are slow, as folks who work M-F want to sleep in. I do usually have a carload or 2 show up after quitting time, as I'm boxing up, "are you closed?" Duh, it's 3:00, I closed at 2--if you could read the address in the paper, I'm fairly certain you could read time too..........

I was expecting an african american woman with her white husband, hispanic and chinese children :girly:, tree hugging mother in-law :peace:, computer geek cousin :compunch: along with their 3 leg pitbull to show up on their Harley :biker: with spinners :punk: at my yardsale but it :rain: rained. :(

Agreed, but when you're buying things for your sale, it sure helps to know who your customers are and what they want. However you have to break it down in order to get
the right product is ok with me so long as you treat each and every customer that comes to your sale with the respect that they deserve. Off my (soft)soap box now...

I would never do that to my customers. The sale is on until my signs are down and the garage door is closed. If I need extra motivation, I think about the alternative - no cars all day.

I think you took me too literally--I never say that outloud, just in my head........but I'm not unboxing anything for them either. If they want something that I haven't packed yet, great, buy away!! :)

Agreed & agreed.

My market is between two major cities that are both completly diverse. While the market attendence is completly different. 60-70% hispanic, then equal for the rest.

Even specifc products can be hard.... I had hair products that were specifically marketed to the african-american community. I had those for sale for several weeks a couple bucks each. I had several lookers, but no buyers. Not even any low offers...untill

An a-a lady comes up and askes "These are all a dollar each?"

me: yep

lady: "I'll take 'em all. These will sell good when I have my yard sale for my coupon stuff"

She didn't even blink or look at me funny, not even ask me... I was like "huh!?!":omg:

Super slow people with less than 10 total. I made maybe $150 tops if that today with 3 hours to go. Poor traffic area is what's killing me as I sell well when they show up. I guess I will be packing up and having another one in 6 months(dang city rules). I do have many people asking me when my next one is though and now I have an idea what is selling and what is not.

Wow just wow. I was sitting here and the head store manager of the large publix in my area pulled up with his stocking manager. They have alot of theft of certain items and I just happened to have many of those same items i.e. razors, allegra, ect. One of his customers told him about my sale. Luckily for me I make sure I have a good relationship with all the managers around me so he knows I did not steal it. I had talked to him before in the store and I had written publix so I knew their rules and he was the one who called me back and remembered me(quite the memory) so as he said he knows I go out of my way to follow their rules. I even asked if he minded me having the sale and he said not really but his higher up probably would. I explained to him that I do not S&G his stores and he knew that. I also told him about the coupons like the bogo razors and how the MQs wee $3 so his store gets full value. He even said his wife may come over for some zyrtec lol since it is less than half his store price. Was still odd though seeing him come over because I thought I was in trouble there lol.

The weather killed it for us today. One hour left to go. We maybe cleared $100 today. Was gloomy with rain for the first couple hours of the sale but since has been clear, often times with sun. Warm outside, too. We're set up inside so that isn't the issue. We've had a lot of people today looking strictly for junk it seems. lol

And a lot of people commenting that they don't have much money/any money. I definitely agree with those that say to do it at the very beginning of the month as it seems the people that get their checks spend it all within the first couple days of having it and then don't have any until the next check.

I do have quite a few emails for potential long-timers, though. :)

I have had people show up at quitting time (or a bit after) and be the best sales of the day...

As a buyer, I have been frustrated when someone advertises 8 - 4 and I go at 2 and they are already packed up...

Sounds like you did great with what you had to work with. Is there any way you could take your stuff to a community sale and not have to wait 6 months

A few thoughts from my sales the last few weeks:
3 - When piggybacking on a neighborhood sale, make sure not all the neighborhoods are having their sale on the same day. My friend and I put our stuff out at her neighborhood sale and it was slow, I think because people were spread a little too thin. Made $750 last weekend.

That is something I am thinking strongly about. My neighborhood is having a sale in a couple of weeks. I am tempted to piggyback on it. But on the other hand - it might be better to wait to have a sale when all the neighbors aren't having theirs.

Our town lets us have three yard sales a year. Each one has to be at least 30 days apart. Also - there is a woman at the end of the block who sells LOTS of H&B and drug store stuff. She has a garage FULL of the stuff. I think she has been doing it for years. I actually bought a bunch of stuff from her several years ago - before I started SDing. I am not sure I want to directly compete with her - or take sales away from her (if people get to my house first).

So - it might be better to wait and do my sale at a different time than the neighbors do.

Not sure how that works. I will ask the city once I hear of my subdivision having one and this time maybe more will show. The one thing I did learn- cleaning supplies are a gold mine. I pretty much sold out and I had a bunch. I went back this morning and got a few more even though the profit level was like .70 per item and sold out from the first person who showed up.

Besides traditional flea markets - many communities, schools, church groups, etc. have big sales and rent space.

I'm excited to be having my first stockpile sale of the year. We moved to a subdivision in November and they are having a community sale this week. I'm only scared that my neighbors that I don't know that well will think I'm crazy for my stockpile...we'll see. My mom is coming to work the yard sale in the morning while i'm at work.

Also, I hate when people haggle since I tend to price 50-75% less than Wal-Mart. I'm on the cheap side (usually $3 for Proglide razors...thinking maybe I should try $4 since most people posted that price!) so I'm going to post a few signs stating something to the effect of:

I feel my prices are reasonable so I will not haggle unless you spend more than $10.

People don't realize they aren't even paying tax...6% tax can add up quick!

Do you think this sounds reasonable?

Save $1 on $10 purchase
Save $3 on $20 purchase
Save $5 on a $30 purchase
Save $7 on a $40 purchase
Save $10 on a $50 purchase

I'm not here to make a huge profit and I only purchase items when they are absolutely free (just paying tax) so I think the discounts are reasonable...or are they too much? Maybe I should just do:

Save $2 on a $15 purchase
Save $4 on a $25 purchase
Save $8 on a $50 purchase

Any suggestions?

I am not a fan of the discount thing. I do however like the idea of a treasure box kinda thing for when someone spends over $20. Although I haven't done it yet. The weather has been horrible on weekends :(

We had our yard sale today and made $675. It's funny, because we have two yard sales a year (community tag sales--all that's allowed per our association by-laws, even though we own the house and the land...grrr...), and we ALWAYS make between $600 and $700. I just can't break that $700 mark. I'm going to try to really stock up for the September sale, but I'll never make anywhere near what some of you guys do! Highlights from today:

Sold well:
Toothpaste @ $1-$2
Toothbrushes @ $1
Shampoo/conditioner/stylers @ $2 (sold about half of what I had)
Tresemme @ $3
Deodorant @ $2 (sold almost everything except Right Guard, which I thought would fly out!)
Olay 2-pk bar soap @ $1 SOLD OUT
Mouthwash @ $2-$3
A&H Spinbrush @ $4 SOLD OUT
Razors @ $2-$4 SOLD OUT
Cosmetics @ $1-$3 (sold 1/3 of what I had--which is much better than usual)
Revlon tools @ $1
Halls Refresh @ $.50 SOLD OUT (had these marked $.75 at last two sales and sold none)
Medications @ $1-$3 (sold much more than expected)

Duds:
Glucose monitors @ $3 (these have sold well in the past)
Airwick i-Motion @ $3-$5 (sold a few large ones for $5, but no small ones for $3)
Glade Scented Oil candle tins @ $.75
Finish Quantumatic systems @ $5
Pads/liners @ $2-$4 (these have sold well in the past)
Men's bodywash @ $2 (this never sells for me and I have no idea why)
J&J baby shampoo and powder @ $2 (???)
Vaseline Sheer Infusion @ $2
Complete contact solution @ $3

I only sold 3 John Frieda hair colors at $5 each, and several people were interested, but I didn't have their shades. I marked all other hair color $2 each and only sold a handful. Hair color never does well--you need the right person to come by and find the right shade.

Our sale was supposed to end at 2:00, but we had some late comers and let them poke through our half-packed boxes. Two couples spent $80 between them, so it was worth staying open. Also, I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of hagglers today! :woot:

My area must be strange. Everyone is making a killing on razors for $3 to $4 and I could not even move them at $2. Heck I could not move them at 3/$5. These are the soleils and noxzemas and flex4s and comfort3s. I sold 0 mach3s and the hydros at $4 yet all 3 of my proglides went for $5 that others cannot seem to sell. Maybe my area is snobby lol. I personally wouldn't offer any discounts, because there are tons of people who would happily pay your prices and now you have to give them the discount, too. If people ask for lower prices, you can deal with it on a case-by-case basis. But if haggling is a HUGE problem at your sales, then I guess I can see why you'd want to try to nip it in the bud. Good luck and have fun!

Most of the disposables don't sell for me. I can sell Fusions and Hydro5's for $3. Bic Soleils move slowly at $3, but will go faster at $2.50. Most people don't like the Soleil's so I only get them if it's a MM. I don't go out of my way to get Soleils.

I may give a small discount to a few people, but never at the beginning of a sale Usually only if an item has sat for several sales and no interest or if someone makes me a reasonable offer on something that is still there at the end of a 2 day sale and I don't want to store it. Your prices are more than fair and people will see that, especially if you have more than one sale. Word of mouth is great :) I had several big sales from someone who came because their friend called them and told them about my great sale.

I am not a fan of the discount thing. I do however like the idea of a treasure box kinda thing for when someone spends over $20. Although I haven't done it yet. The weather has been horrible on weekends :(
I personally wouldn't offer any discounts, because there are tons of people who would happily pay your prices and now you have to give them the discount, too. If people ask for lower prices, you can deal with it on a case-by-case basis. But if haggling is a HUGE problem at your sales, then I guess I can see why you'd want to try to nip it in the bud. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for all the feedback! I think you all talked me out of discounts! My prices are *very* reasonable anyway!

I like the idea of having a treasure bin of the free sample products I"ve gotten and you can pick 1 for every $10 or maybe just you get to choose an item if you spend $10 or more....

Thanks again! I'll be repping :)

Duds:
Airwick i-Motion @ $3-$5 (sold a few large ones for $5, but no small ones for $3)
Finish Quantumatic systems @ $5
Pads/liners @ $2-$4 (these have sold well in the past)
Men's bodywash @ $2 (this never sells for me and I have no idea why)

I couldn't sell Airwick compacts for anything more than $2. When I marked them down, they flew off the shelf. I started at $2.50.

Finish/Quatumatic has to have the right buyer. If you can get one person to buy it and see that it works, I bet they will come back and buy all of them. That happened to me. Although, I wonder if Finish is discontinuing them. They were marked down to $1.50 at Kroger today.

Stayfree sold well at $1.50 for me but I had so many Always I marked them to $1.50 and sold out. Liners are harder. I can't get more than .50 for them.

Men's bodywash wouldn't budge at $2. Once we marked them to 3/$5, they flew like crazy off the shelf.

Have you been getting people to sign up for emails when you have your sales? I have about 50 emails now and the same people show up every time. Only one person has asked to be removed.

I made the mistake of getting them when they were darn near free awhile back, got quite a few, tried using them..........anyone else have them leak onto the clean dishes after the dishwasher was done running? I used one and tried to sell the rest...........no takers on mine either and I had them marked at $1 just to get rid of them...........so I assumed that others had that problem too.......

I haven't had a problem with them leaking, but the stupid thing quit working after 3 cycles. Won't be buying any more of them, and won't sell them either. Total dud for me!

I didn't have that problem, but I hated that you couldn't do back to back dishwasher cycles. I have 6 people in my house and I don't want to wait 4 hours for the stupid thing to cool down and reset itself between loads.

If you can't sell them and want to use the detergent, it is a simple matter to remove the sticks of detergent and put them in your dishwasher dispenser.

Well I have decided to do a b2g1 3 hour sale today(on like priced items). Most of my stuff was free anyway and I still have around 1000 items. With limited storage and having to wait 6 months for another sale I may as well go for as much cash as I can.

I like them. I have kept all that I have bought...well was paid to take. :D Now my mom and 2 of her friends are using them and they like it. I have not had any problems with them leaking. I don't know how they would sell as I am keeping mine but I have tried selling finish gel pacs and powerball tablets with no luck.

Not sure how much that will boost your cash, giving one item free. Your sales were already very high per person. So your prices are very good. You won't have to store as much though.

Last day of sale and another crappy day here. Bah. About 90 minutes left to go and I think I may have cleared just over $50 in 3 hours...

Fusion razors are not selling AT ALL for me. I sold a couple of the gift sets for $5 but the regular razors are just sitting at $4.

Surprising number of Nivea women's body wash sold. I started with 20 and now have 10. I have Olay right beside it and most people opted for the Nivea.

Glad I listened to everyone and did batteries at $4 per package. Got rid of about half of what I had with no issues. Only one guy said he thinks he could get them cheaper at Costco.

Surprising number of lighters sold as well. Did .50 each, started with just over 20 and am down to 6.

And the grab bags idea is great! I priced mine at .50 each since I just had a lot of trinkets in each one and probably got rid of half of those that I had.

That's about all that's worth writing about. I did OK on everything else. I really think the weather killed me since I had to set up indoors. :(

Here are my prices:

Deodorant $1.50-$2 depending on brand
Body Wash $2-$2.50 depending on brand/size (Olay large sizes $4)
Shave gel $1.50
Toothpastes $1.50-$2 depending on brand/size (Think these need to be a strict $1 per tube in my area)
Toothbrushes $1-$1.50 depending on brand (Probably need to do .75 each on these)
Diapers $7
Visine $1 (sold out of all but 1)
Lotions $2.50-$3 depending on brand/size (sold half)
Shampoo/Conditioner ($2-$3) depending on brand (Probably need to do $1.50)--Was expecting good things from the head and shoulders and it was a big let down. Only sold ONE out of 20 bottles
Facial Cleansers $1.50-$2.50 depending on brand/size (All did equally OK)
Tylenol precise $2.50 (sold ONE out of 30)
Makeup $2 (sold a few eyeliners/mascaras)
Toys .50-$2 (had bubble for .50 and sunglasses for $2 and only have a couple left)

Some things to note:
-If you ever get M&M's, peanut sells best. I had the medium bags for $2. Sold out of peanut, didn't sell a single milk chocolate or peanut butter.
-Apparently no one likes red vines. I sold 3 bags out of 40. Most people that saw them commented that they prefer twizzlers.

So....I should be able to clear a total of $500 from the past 3 days. Not terrible but nowhere near what I wanted to do. (Goal was $1,200) I think we did OK considering our circumstances.

Final take: $880 and here are some notes:

Cleaning supplies=awesome at $1.50. The more expensive scrubbing bubbles power sprays did not sell at $3 and the really expensive ones that are nearly $18 at walmart did not sell at $6.

Toothpaste: aquafresh(sold out), crest(sold half), colgate maxcleans/fresh(sold out), colgate total(terrible) all at $1.50.

Toothbrushes: from $1-$1.50 pretty much terrible

Floss: plackers(sold out) gum ez(terrible), dentek(terrible), reach total white(not bad) at $1. reach floss the cheap kind(sold about 3/4) at .50

Scents: twin packs and airwick refills at $3(sold out), I-motion large($5) and imotion compact($3) sold out. other compacts at $3 and ultras at $4 did decently.

Razors: Bic disposable flex4,comfort3,bic soleil did poorly at $3 and $2. Noxzema sold out at $2. Proglide comfort gift sets sold out at $5. Mach3s and hydros did not sell at $4 even b2g1.

Vitamins: sold none at $1.50. advil nearly sold out at $2. excedrin sold none at $2

feminine pads: sold barely at from always to stayfree at $2 even when I dropped to b2g1

makeup: Moved down to $2 each and still barely sold any.

allegra/zyrtec: sold maybe 20 at $2.50

eye medication: blink, revitilens, alaway: sold 1 and that is it

deodorants: right guard sold half, dove men+care(terrible), dove womens(terrible), irish spring(terrible) at $1.50. cvs brand at $1(terrible)

bodywash: sold out at $2 all nivea mens(14) and womens(4). Clean&clear sold 8 total at $3 or 2/$5 and had to work extra hard to even sell that. Right guard bw was beyond terrible at $2. I sold 1 out of around 60. People hated the fact it was a combo of bw.hair, and even shaving. What a huge bust. I did not even recover tax lol.

Pickles lol, classico, and granola nearly sold out at $1. people went nuts over the pickles(publix deal) and the large pickles went the best.

Those were my main items. I am going to stay away from feminine products and deodorant even if it is just for tax. They are a waste of time in my area trying to sell those. IF you can get cleaning products for free or even cheap and sell them for around 50% off i.e. $1.50 I would suggest doing it. People went crazy over that stuff. I even went back to the store to get more even knowing my profit was not that much and the first person that came bought everything I had just purchased. If you can get and sell those glade twinpacks and airwick refills at $3 then do so- wow what great sellers and people were disappointedI had run out. Glade candles at $1.50 were a complete bust even b2g1. The thing I learned the most- find a way no matter what to get the word out. I had probably 40 total people over 3 days which is terrible yet sold $880. People will pay alot of cash if your deals are good and only foot traffic kept me from completely selling out.

I do well with deo $2 and body wash $2.50 and of course cleaning supplies/laundry supplies.

What I do stay away from is contact solution, dishwasher detergent, and benefiber and most vitamins. However, when it's mm I pick them up.

Don't give up on glade candles, they sold better for me during the fall.

I can always sell out of Glade candles @ $1.25/ea. Though, there hasn't been a good deal in a while. I only pick them up when they're free or MM. They are heavy and stinky to store, and they melt easily, so you have to keep them in decent temperatures.

Same here, plus no adult diapers, diet products (Slimfast, etc), energy bars, and energy drinks. I rarely do any OTC meds except for liquid cold & flu (Theraflu, Robitussin, etc). Can't keep those in stock.

The quantumatics work well for me. Dishes are always very clean.
As for waiting between loads, no problem. Easy enough to take out the hot one and swap in a new cool one and start up another load. I have dozens of them, so enough for several years.

I have tried selling them in my sales, too, with little luck. Sold maybe 1 or 2 in the last several sales. The geltabs and the regular powder, and even the hand dish soap always sell out, though.

Well, Sat did a sale and was basically really nasty out and windy and drizzly. We made $1479 and I had to stop early, like 4pm, due to it actually starting to rain.
I was outside and it was just too cold. I kept things in bins with the lid on and put a few of each thing on the tables (but kept things that are in boxes in bins so not to get wet). People were able to go through the plastic bins under the tables too so things were able to not get all nasty due to the wetness.
Maybe I will have another sale tomorrow, but supposed to only be 55 high :(

Thanks for the recap. Don't give up!! I had 2 sales last year - and the stuff that didn't move at the first sale, sold like crazy at the second one. It is hard to tell what will and won't sell for sure, with only 40 people.

If you have a chance to set up at a community yard sale event, even in a neighboring community - you might want to try it.

Both the sales I had were at the county fairgrounds in the expo building. The other vendors were built in customers. I sold quite a bit to them. And some kept coming back for more.

So, questions abound:
for those that sell Menards rebate stuff, which items sell best? We sold out of the pine cleaner in the gallon jug for $2 to the first person and they wanted more. It is on sale again for $0.49 or so AR. Also, does the caulk that is FAR sell? What price, I was thinking $2? I sold almost out of the microfiber car mitt things at $2 and the spic and span cleaning cloths at $0.50.
What things sell and what prices are good?
One big question, those candles from a month or so ago that are in the jar are a nice size, but I have no clue what to sell them for. Will $3 be too high or just right?
TIA!

Good to see you back!!! Nice sale! Especially for such a sucky day...

Thanks! Maybe I'll mark those Air Wicks down next time--I'm sick of packing them up because they come in those annoying packages. I might try the 3/$5 on body wash, too. Luckily, someone came at the end of the sale and bought the last 3 men's Nivea, which are just a smidge too tall for the paper boxes I use to store them...lol. I didn't get the hot Nivea coupons the last time around, so I didn't have a huge stash of that. I have a ton of Old Spice, Gillette, and Dove left.

I was going to try to do an email list, but I'm not allowed to have additional yard sales other than the two community sales, so it seemed like a waste. But I kind of wish I had done it, because I have tons of family in the area, and I could potentially set up in one of their yards, and I'm sure loyal customers would go wherever if they want the stuff. I also thought of having each person write down an email address and a small list of items they're especially in search of...if I was to get a bunch of something, I could email that person directly to see if they wanted to swing by for it. I could also have "exclusive" sales for email list people only, but it would have to be in the garage or house and on the DL. We are on the main drag in our community and we got ratted out the one time we had an "unsanctioned yard sale" (we didn't know at the time that we couldn't, but we got a $50 fine!).

I put them out for the 2nd time last week and maybe one person even picked it up to look at it.... they're bulky and take up a lot of space so I decided to keep them for myself. Opened the first one up this weekend and my dishes were *sparkling* clean. Given, I've only done one load but no leaking here. I love it. I usually make my own dishwasher detergent so I feel so spoiled with this contraption :girly:

:offtopic:

Ugh, somebody give me some encouragement. My Fusion sold so well that I got really excited and bought 20 Fusion Qs 3 days before it stopped rolling so naturally they were a) overpriced and b) late to the party by the time they came in the mail. So now I'm stuck with $5 RRs that I managed to get from a few Qs I had and 20 unused Qs until the end of the month. I feel worse now because I see that the prices on *bay have dropped dramatically since so it's not like I could recoup even 1/2 my money anyway by selling them back.

I'm planning on doing the Gillette deal but that doesn't really get me very far bc my Qs are late **again** and the way I'm seeing the Gillette talk, they'll be OOS by tomorrow. Are you all planning on rolling next week mostly for the Fusion? Ugh, I hate it when I have great plans but they fall flat on dead on their face....... *sigh*
