Nintendo Promises 'Several' Core Gamer Titles For E3

Following an unprecedented series of product and market research leaks yesterday regarding the forthcoming line-up for Microsoft and a number of third party publishers, an official from Nintendo of America has spoken out regarding the company’s own E3 plans.

With Nintendo now preferring not to announce new games until much closer to their release date than has traditionally been the case, almost nothing is known about the company’s first party plans for the second half of the year.

Speaking to consumer website GamePro, Nintendo of America’s director of public relations, Marc Franklin stated: “We will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3."

Apparently responding to criticism that Nintendo has recently been too focused on the casual and mainstream market, Franklin further stated, “The clear majority of people waiting in line outside retailers on Sunday mornings to buy their Wii consoles are core gamers.”

Traditionally less prone to leaked information than other companies, Nintendo’s major announcements are expected to be made at the company’s annual media briefing, a day or two before the E3 Media & Business Summit on July 11th to 13th.

Eidos bringing Lara Croft to E3 (surprise!)

Eidos has confirmed its E3 lineup for the big show next month and, not surprisingly, Tomb Raider Underworld is on the list. It's not the only game though. Other 360 titles making an E3 appearance include Just Cause 2 and Battlestations: Pacific. Both Underworld and Just Cause 2 have been kept relatively close to Eidos' chest so far. Hopefully E3 will bring forth plenty of new details on these (arguably) highly anticipated titles. Also worth noting, IGN's report of the Eidos list implies that these games (along with Monster Lab for Wii) are merely the only games confirmed for E3, so it's possible we might see some others as well (GEON 2 here we come!).

LucasArts reconfirms E3 attendance, not announcing new titles

Despite an article earlier today on GI.biz to the contrary (since pulled), LucasArts has reconfirmed it will be attending E3. "We're definitely attending E3 and looking forward to it," said the company's PR Director, Margaret Grohne, to Joystiq.

The confusion came after an article by VentureBeat was misinterpreted. GI.biz now reports LucasArts will merely not be announcing any new titles at E3 this year.

Game Career Seminar Returns To 2008 E For All Show

Organizer IDG has announced that the GDC Game Career Seminar, run by Gamasutra parent company Think Services, will be returning to the second annual Oct. 3-5th E For All Expo, adding what it calls "an important educational opportunity for gamers who want to get into the video game business."

IDG says the seminar will let "professionals looking to break into the video game business, or already seasoned players looking for new expertise," have an opportunity to "network with industry professionals, meet with HR executives from leading game companies, and most importantly, gain the skills and insights to jumpstart their careers."

The event will take place on October 3rd, and will offer developers the opportunity to learn new skills, network, and further their careers in video game and digital development. Seminar pass holders also receive one-day admission to E for All exhibits.

Said GDC Events executive director Jamil Moledina, "Our goal with Game Career Seminar is to present customized access to the game creation process to people who are passionate about gaming, and help jumpstart their careers in the video game development industry. As one of the industry’s most popular games-related events, partnering once again with E for All connects us to a large concentration of game enthusiasts in North America, thereby inspiring dedicated fans to become the next generation of video game auteurs."

PS3 Firmware Update 2.40 Arriving for E3, Plus Full Feature List (http://slickdeals.net/?sduid=160240&sdtid=852750&sdfid=36&u2=http://gizmodo.com/5019477/ps3-firmware-update-240-arriving-for-e3-plus-full-feature-list)

The PS3 firmware update you've really, really been waiting for—2.40, which brings in XMB access and achievements—you're gonna have to wait a little longer for. Like, 'til E3. CVG says that Sony's holding the update back for its address at E3 in about three weeks. But, to tide you over, they've got the supposed full list of features being added.

Here's what you'll be able to do from the in-game XMB:

* Friend category
* View, send, receive messages
* Manage downloads
* Set the vibration feature of the controller
* Sign in to PlayStation Network
* Register friends
* Manage Bluetooth devices
* Terminate the game
* Music category
* Use the system BGM
* Work the system BGM operation panel
* Settings category
* Assign controllers
* View profiles
* Game category
* Set audio devices
* Use the voice changer

Under the music category, you can playback your own music, though it's not known whether you'll be able to do it with every games or just specific titles that support it. Either way, it'll be nice to finally have some basic functions that sorta should've been there in the first place.

Ensemble Studios' Bruce Shelley says that "several demo stations" of Halo Wars will be available at E3. This is generally considered good news, because it means Halo Wars has gotten to the point where it's no longer held in captivity by the developers who don't want anybody to touch a thing. It also eases our fears of further delays following Ensemble's "when it's done" quote from last month.

We will certainly have hands-on impressions of the game at E3 and hopefully, we'll be able to nail down a more solid release window. We keep hope alive that Halo Wars, built from the ground up for the Xbox 360, could finally figure out the RTS genre for consoles.

Rumor: A new Chief'less Halo announced at E3

According to a few gaming news sources, Microsoft may still have a few aces up their sleeves heading into next week's E3, meaning that we may actually be treated to some surprise Halo game announcement news after all.

After speaking with their inside insiders, CVG is reporting that they believe Microsoft will in fact announce a new Halo game next week that's said to not be a true Halo 4 seeing that Master Chief is said to not be featured in the game. This Halo E3 rumor mongering comes in the wake of Sarcastic Gamer's recent report, that their inside sources have also confirmed that a new Halo game will be announced at E3. Interesting stuff. Though, if a new Halo game is announced, we have a feeling it may have to do with Jackson's episodic Halo: Chronicles which hasn't received a formal on stage announcement yet. But if a totally new Halo game is announced ... that's cool too

Pre-E3 2008: Monster Hunter 3 a No-Show
Capcom confirms that you're going to need to wait it out a while longer.
by Matt Casamassina

July 9, 2008 - With E3 2008 around the corner, fans of Capcom's Monster Hunter series had hoped the event would house a new and perhaps even playable version of Monster Hunter 3, now a Wii exclusive. However, the publisher confirmed to IGN Wii today that the title will not be on hand at the American exhibition.

Monster Hunter 3 has been described by Capcom as the official sequel to Monster Hunter 2 despite the fact that it's now on Wii and not for PSP or PS3, as was originally planned. Gamers take control of a "fearless hunter tracking down and battling huge and ferocious monsters all while traversing breathtaking natural environments."

Monster Hunter 3 is likely to show up at the Tokyo Game Show, which kicks off this October. Rest assured that IGN will be there.

I really like the cover system and stuff of Uncharted. What I'm not crazy about its the hand to hand combat, which seems a little weak to me. Can't he carry a knife? I'm ready to slash some peeps! I could care less about a brutal combo. Anyway, if he can either find more ammo (because you constantly run out) and/ or have a knife the second time around and add multiplayer(?!), I'll be all geared up. I think uncharted multiplayer could be really fun.

What I want to see is some of that God of War 3 footage they are rumored to be showing at E3.

Who are these d-bags?!?

God of War 2 has a more refined combat system and improved upon almost everything from GoW1. But the first GoW had a more satisfying ending, story wise and because the final battle is actually challenging on the hardest mode whereas the GoW2 final battle is easy, even on Titan.

The final battle is weak in comparison to GoW1 IMO. Once you get past the endurance run its smooth sailing.

Really? GoW2 is significantly longer and has a lot more bosses and other enemies. There are more puzzles but there's also more fighting.

Nintendo E3 2008 press conference: Let's play bingo

In anticipation of next week's E3 Media and Business Summit, we've prepared bingo cards for each of the big press conferences, filled with some likely (and some not-so-likely) predictions for what each of the big three console makers intends to announce at arguably the biggest trade shows of the year.

Today's card is for Nintendo (special thanks to Wii and DS Fanboy). Our fingers are crossed twice over (trust us, it's painful) for the no-brainer Pikmin sequel. Click on each of the slides above for more information about our predictions. The folks at NWF and DSF got a little carried away, so check out their full predictions (Wii, DS).

Nintendo's E3 2008 press conference begins Tuesday, July 15, at 9:00am PT (that's 12:00 pm Joystiq Time / ET). As always, we'll be liveblogging the event, so you can play along in real-time with us. (Also: check out all our press conference bingo cards, including some for Microsoft and Sony!)

Ding Ding! Some potentially huuuuge news this morning from the pages of Brit magazine NGamer -- apparently, E3 will see Nintendo uppercutting its competition with a new edition of Punch-Out!! for the Wii. Not only that, but the mag reckons Punch Out!! Wii will ship with Balance Board support to let us float like a butterfly dodge and weave, and that we'll be using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to sting like a bee punch.

Is this the hardcore-pleasing title that Reggie has previously referenced? It could well be, because we're the hardcore, and we're pleased by this!

"A lot is going to be happening" for Fable 2 at E3

Fable 2 community guru Sam has posted a hopeful (and obviously tired) developer blog over at the Lionhead community site. It seems like the crew at Lionhead has been in crunch mode for quite, working late nights with no days off. Sam notes, "The work is done, sort of. Not really, but most of it is." We feel for them, we really do, but we must admit that's not the interesting part of the blog. This is: "E3, next week. A lot is going to be happening. You'll just have to wait and see what exactly, but if any of you say 'this wasn't worth it' I will chase you and burn down your house." Dare we hope that our Fable 2 online co-op prognostication will finally come to be? We already scratched off one of our bingo spaces, here's hoping for another.

Oh, and the game will be playable at E3 and, yes, we will be playing it.

E3 Rumor: Geometry Wars 2 primed for surprise XBLA release this week

We have some juicy rumor news fellow Geometry Wars fanboys. According to one of Joystiq's reliable sources, Microsoft will be making a few Geo Wars news waves as early as tomorrow morning. Specifically, we're being told that Geometry Wars 2 will be officially announced during Microsoft's Monday press conference AND it may even make a surprise release to the XBLA later this week. If not tomorrow. Something that isn't all that far fetched seeing that we already have the game's achievements as we wait for its officially unveiling. Heck, we'll trade in Coffeetime Crosswords for some spastic Geo Wars 2 action, so make it happen Microsoft. Please make it happen.

9:49 am PT: An MS representative asks us if we have our "passports." We assume she means our press badges and isn't about to whisk us to another country. Mind you, we've always wanted to see the Swiss Alps. Oh, and the chocolate and... okay, we're getting sidetracked.

9:5 am PT: So, if you were trying to spot us in this line, we'd be the ones holding laptops in one hand and typing with the other. We keep bumping into the person in front when the line comes to a halt, what with our eyes glued to our screens. Also, person behind us. STOP READING OVER OUR SHOULDERS. ALSO, YOU SMELL BAD.

9:57 am PT: We've reached the front of the line! No, wait... it just loops back. Already this conference is a roller coater of anticipation and disappointment.

Microsoft's Lips supports motion-sensitive wireless mics

Microsoft's Lips has been "officially" unveiled at E3 -- a bit early courtesy of Gamerscore Blog. The karaoke game, developed by Elite Beat Agents dev iNiS, will feature motion-sensitive wireless microphones. (What does that mean?) The "franchise" is expected to hit Xbox 360 this holiday season.

10:34 am PT: "You're about to see some of the most anticipated games on the horizon, Fallout 3, RE5, GoW2... these represent over half a billion in projected sales. These are intense games, and many are not for the faint of heart... so fasten your seat belt." Adrenaline! Intriguing characters! Immersive stories! That's what's in their lineup this year, apparently. A strange, black-and-white clip plays, showing an old-fashioned family living the perfect suburban life. Where will you be when the atomic bombs fall? It's a vaultec ad, of course!

10: 35 am PT: Prepare for the future, the video tells us. Unfortunately, the future is a nuclear wasteland -- albeit a stunningly rendered one. We see Fallout 3 peering over the devastation and readying his weapon. Todd Howard, Game Director from Bethesda is up. Fallout 3 incorporates everything Bethesda has learned from Oblivion. A live demonstration begins.

10:37 am PT: "You just saw the first half of a trailer that will debut online in just a few hours and on Xbox Live... when we did Oblivion on the 360, we took a lot of risks and learned a lot. We've taken all that learning and applied it to Fallout 3...." Demoing the game, controller disconnected. "I'm good..." A ruined Washington DC is our first sight, with a third-person camera switching to first person as a floating robot whizzes by The PIPboy 3000 is shown (it's on your wrist!) and Todd examines his stats and his "ridiculously violent" weapons

10:39 am PT: You can play stealthily, aggressively and... oh, Todd has gone for the aggressive route. He pulls out a rifle, and targets the body parts of a nearby enemy. He fires a shot, with a slow-mo shaky cam shot showing limbs exploding violently. We're going to like this game

10:40 am PT: The world's scale is enormous, with dilapidated strcutures and roads covering the entire field of view. Todd whips out a rocket launcher and wreaks havoc, followed by an EMP grenade which shuts down a robotic baddie.

10:41 am PT: "You can be a good person, a bad person and anyone in-between. A helicopter lands, kicking up dust. The "fatman," a mini nuclear bomb catapult is the response. The camera follows the warhead in slow-mo all the way to its destination. "It's a pretty effective weapon."

10:42 am PT: "I just wanted to say how much we love XBLM... we'll be doing substantial exclusive 360 and Games For Windows downloadable content. Thank you!" Jun Takeuchi, producer of RE5 is up. He's sporting an awesome Umbrella sweater. The world's first playable demo is about to be shown.

10:44 am PT: The game's director takes the controller, guiding Chris through a grimy abandoned building. He takes out a couple of enemies, with each shot sending them recoiling in a fairly believable way. The graphics are looking sharp -- and bright. Thanks, African sun.

10:45 am PT: The online co-op mode is confirmed, with another player taking control of Sheva, Chris' female companion. She collects some healing items, leaps down into a building and takes out those pesky not-zombies with a well-placed shot to -- of course -- an exploding barrel. While she has her hands full, Chris snipes from a distance, reducing enemy heads to clouds of red mush. Now that's teamwork!

10:46 am PT: (By the way, leaked news)

* Portal: Still Alive, Lips, Uno Rush, Galaga Legions to be announced at Microsoft Press Conference
* Microsoft's Lips supports motion-sensitive wireless mics
* Portal: Still Alive heading to Xbox Live Arcade
* Galaga: Legions goes to XBLA, from Pac-Man CE team

10:48 am PT: We're not seeing a major gameplay difference between this and RE4, but the teamwork and fantastic visuals should certainly keep things exciting. Chris kicks down a gate and meets up with Sheva. Bad news: They just ran into chainsaw-wielding bag-on-his-face guy. Will they survive? "We're out of time!" One more thing: Resident Evil 5 is out in North America and Europe, March 13th 2009. "Demo's over... "We do have one more thing we'd like to tell you today. RE5 will avail worldwide simultaneous, Fri. 13th, March, 2009. Please hang on just a bit longer, we'll have it to you shortly. Thank you very much!""

10:51 am PT: His lugubrious voice confirms it: Fable 2 is finished. The opening moments begin to play. A bird soars through a winter-gripped forest, with castles looming in the distance. The bird flies across a sprawling town, with people walking about doing... well, fantasy world type things. The bird lands on a tower and promptly poops on a character down below. You're the little kid who just got an unpleasant surprise from the sky. We're shown the world of Albion. The hero and his doggy companion stand in a thick forest. Online co-op is here, with a new "twist."

10: 52 am PT: "I want to show you the ability to play in coop mode over Xbox live..." there are orbs that wander around the scenery, Fable II players in single-player mode, can invite them to the game. "Why? Your hero, your world is unique to you... we've got a dynamic landscape that changes, you want to invite people in!" Little orbs represent your friends playing their single-player games -- inviting them into the game is a matter of walking up to the orbs and pulling them into your game. Just like that, no lobbies.

10:53 am PT: Your world and character is unique to your game, so friends can hang out (or fight) in each other's worlds. Peter is taking his friend to his house to meet his wife and son. "It's the things that other games don't do... hang out in the bar and get drunk, chat people up, there' a whole wealth of things you can do. One of the things you can do is get married. ... I'm not a rich adventurer, but I've got a lovely family life, there's my son, and my coop buddy can interact with them. (My wife actually likes belching, by the way.)"

10:54 am PT: They stand in a quaint room, one soon filled with burping characters. The friend can even chat up Peter's wife, he notes. Oh, and one last bit of news: It's out in October (this year!)

10:55 am PT: A new clip plays. It's Gears of War 2, and we see Marcus and Dom in a bad place. Bad place referring to an underground cavern overrun with locust of all shapes and sizes. Marcus, with Locust shield in hand, runs straight into the madness.

10:56 am PT: Oh, it's Cliff Bleszinski. He's excited about the locust's return, and he's about to show off the 2-player co-op mode. Time to mow down some locust

11:00 am PT: More grappling hooks show up, and a stream of locusts launches an attack. Dust and rubble is everywhere. A Brumak shows up, with its shots from down below making the entire building break apart and shake.

11:01 am PT: Marcus and dom escape the collapsing building in a busted elevator. On the other side of the door is a brumak. The entire building is sideways, and Marcus and Dom make their way through several windows and doors, trying to get around the Brumak

11:02 am PT: "If they can ride them, so can we." Brumak riding? Sign us up. The demo ends. A new mode is called "Horde," a five-player co-op mode taking on waves and waves of locust. The changes will happen online, he says, as more people connect and play.. Video chat, instant messaging and movies all play a part in it. We're shown the dashboard (complete with Lego Batman in the tray). A system update is downloaded, the screen fades and the 360 logo shows up.

Here we are at the community channel -- instead of a list of friends, you actually see them. You can chat with or send messages to your friends, but there's something new: create a Live party, private groups of up to 8 people, always connected and chatting as a party."

11:16 am PT: Avatars are just the beginning, he says. There's a new community channel, which shows your online friends loitering about and being up to no good. You can send messages or invite them to a "live party." Share your photos and generally push your own meaningless life on people who don't really care

11:17 am PT: A partnership with Endemol manifests in the "primetime" channel, which takes you and your pals into 1 vs. 100, a massively multiplayer game show coming to Xbox Live this Fall. You'll be able to win real prizes even, which we'd speculate include games, MS points and a sense of decency.

11:18 am PT: "XBL primetime combines the best of TV and of games to provide an entirely new gaming experience... and the best part, you'll all be able to win real prizes. This is opening the next frontier in entertainment. Developers are flocking to XBL Primetime asking how can we play? Instead of checking what's on TV this fall, you'll turn on Xbox and ask what's on Live. Now, let's go to the games channel..."

11:19 am PT: The Live party jumps from phot sharing into a new Uno game. The avatars are all represented on screen. A new Geometry Wars game is (finally) shown, depicting a frenzy of colors, explosions and all-around wrecking of 'tangles

We'll launch community games in the fall as part of the new Xbox Live experience... as Don Mentioned, it's more than games."

11:24 am PT: Time to focus on Xbox Community games now -- it's launching this Fall, and Schappert tells us there's lots of good stuff in there already. Another media partner for video marketplace is coming too -- it's Netflix

11:25 am PT: Head of strategy and business dev, Shane Kim, takes the stage. His avatar appears on screen and freaks us out. His eyes follow you around the room... 11:36 am PT: "Dance to the boogie! Strike a Pose!" You know what, no. This is just getting weird, watching Microsoft execs making fools of themselves. Do we laugh? Do we applaud? Do we quietly slink into our seats and pray for it to be over?

11:37 am PT: Now we're watching John Schappert fleeing a giant lizard capale of unleashing laser destruction. So, to sum up, you record yourself doing silly things, the game inserts you into pre-recorded clips and hilarity totally ensues.

Lips trailer is godawful.

BUT -- you can get music via plugging in an iPod. that's nice.

discussion of Lips by head of iNiS. Lets you sing from your music collection. He mentioned iPod (albeit after Zune) -- probably a no-no for an MS conference. Mics light up and are motion sensitive.

Now Duffy's singing that "Begging you for Mercy" song. She scores terribly (j/k). Confirms that I never want to see her in concert.

EDIT: She's really short. Kim claims Lip is the "it" gift for Xmas.

Guitar Hero World Tour is going to take our vision to new levels. On disc, we're shipping with the greatest number of master tracks ever, more than 85 total songs. While GH revolutionized the way people experience music, our studio is going to for the first time make and share music from around the world. It's going to revolutionize how people create, share, and discover music."

11:41 am PT: We're looking at the new peripherals (hi, touch-slide guitar) and are told that the World Tour will ship with 85 songs on the disc. You'll be able to make and share your music too, opening up Xbox Live to an unyielding torrent of tunes. "With the launch of World Tour, gamers worldwide will get an REM track pack featuring 3 songs from the new album before anyone else. Van Halen and The Eagles are exclusive to world tour, Metallica is joining forces with GH in a huge way. Their highly anticipated, full length album Death Magnetic, it will be offered in its entirety at time of release. We remain committed to delivering you guys new and innovative ways to unleash your inner rock star."

disc soundtrack shown. Can't read them though. 84 songs, all master recordings.

some announcements: A new track from new Guns & Roses album exclusive to RB2. Bob Dylan's Tangled Up in Blue. And....AC/DC exclusive appearance in RB2. (Let there be rock). Apparently AC/DC was fans most requested. Which means, apparently, RB2 fans need a better taste in rock music.

RB disc songs can be exported to RB2. Crowd seems more into RB2 than GH4, tho hard to tell for sure.

11:42 am PT: Stage Kim: "Xbox 360 is the world's greatest stage for music games..." time for the Lips demo, or whatever they're calling it.

11:43 am PT: A brand new music party experience is coming exclusive to Xbox 360 from Microsoft Game Studios. Ah, this must be Lips, complete with pulsing, wireless microphone. The interface seems very Singstar-esque, though we suppose there's only so many ways you can do in-game warbling.

11:45 am PT: And yes, it really is called Lips. Developed by Inis -- Keiichi Yano steps onto the stage, hoping that we're "ready to have some fun." Lips is the first game that lets you sing from your own songs. You'll be able to plug in your Zune! Also, your iPod. "Lips breaks new ground by being the first game to let you sing from your own music collection. Lips features wireless, motion sensitive mikes." Now Duffy is singing her own track.

11:47 am PT: We're introduced to somebody... Duffy. Honestly, we have no idea who she is. All we know is that she's assaulting us with a high-pitched aural burst as she makes her way through the song. She's doing "ok" .. on her own song. If updates cease at this point, it's because her singing has caused our bones to shatter

11:48 am PT: "Why won't you release me." These lyrics have somehow managed to perfectly capture our current state of mind. Reelllllleeeeassse yeah.

11:49 am PT: Oh, it's "Mercy" Duffy. We thought there was no mercy in this room. "Thank you for being a featured artist on Lips, Duffy..." "I don't think I've ever had as much fun singing that song!"

11:50 am PT: Shane: "Last holiday, we had another great experience: Rock Band. We're thrilled that Rock Band 2 will premiere exclusively on Xbox 360." "It's a real pleasure to be here to talk about Rock Band 2, which is debuting in September. The single most important aspect to the game: the music. The soundtrack includes 84 songs, every single one a master recording. It's the most compelling of all our games.

11:51 am PT: Shackler's Revenge -- from Chinese Democracy! Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up in Blue" ACDC appears exclusively in Rock Band 2, "the single most requested band" -- "Let there be Rock" is their contribution

Xbox 360 to Play Full Games Directly Off the Hard Drive (http://gizmodo.com/5025052/xbox-360-to-play-full-games-directly-off-the-hard-drive)

Microsoft dropped a bunch of awesome bombs in their keynote (http://gizmodo.com/5024883/microsoft-e3-liveblog), but there's more! Marc Whitten reveals that you'll be able to copy full games and play them directly off the hard drive to shrink load times (and silence disc spinning), though you'll still need the game inserted so they know you own it.

Also, you can make Live Marketplace purchases from the web and they'll automatically download to your console. Further on the UI upgrades (http://gizmodo.com/5025000/xbox-live-getting-dashboard-redesign-mii+like-avatars-designed-by-rare), the old blades are just moving to the new Xbox guide—every feature, including games library is always available. a take on yesterdays MS conference from IGN Wii editor Matt Cassamassina

Editorial: Oh, No! Xbox Mii-60s Arrive
Microsoft pioneers innovative new Avatars and channel system for Xbox 360. Wait a minute...
by Matt Casamassina

July 14, 2008 - On Monday, Microsoft showcased at its E3 2008 press conference Xbox 360's new interface and Avatar system. We think two or three people in the audience clapped. Really, we're not sure why more attendees weren't blown out of their seats and directly into outer space. This is pioneering stuff, people! Get this. The system's newly designed front end features heavy implementation of "Avatars," or cartoony characters designed to look like caricatures of players. Are you reading what we're writing? Stop moving your eyes and soak it in. You'll be able to recreate yourself, albeit very stylized, in the game. Boom! That's how we do it in Vista Land, baby. But if that weren't enough to shake the very fabric of the universe, Microsoft had more revelations. Like a channels-esque interface for its system. And the ability to incorporate your Miis -- er, Avatars -- into games. This is true innovation, folks.

All right, so I'm laying it on a bit thick, but the Microsoft presentation really left me a little perplexed. I left the conference with the impression that the company has an identity crisis. If during this generation Nintendo has spread outward toward the casual sector, Microsoft has successfully hugged the hardcore demographic with successful franchises that really appeal to traditionalists. At the company's E3 2008 conference, we saw more efforts in that vein, like the gritty Fallout 3 and the beautiful Gears of War 2. Somehow, Xbox 360 owners even got Final Fantasy XIII on their system despite the fact that the console is drowning in Japan. But lodged between all of these revelations, we had to sit through an overly long dedication to a simplified experience -- a blatant attempt to Wii-ize the Xbox 360 interface and environment. A quick look around the message boards revealed that most 360 owners were not terribly impressed. Nauseated, yes. Impressed, no.

It should come as no surprise that the new Mii-60s come from Rare, which has struggled to duplicate the success it had on Nintendo platforms ever since it was embraced into the Microsoft family. But I really think that the companies are trying to wear a shoe that may not necessarily fit. They're forcing their figurative feet in. Squeezing. Cramming, if need be. Microsoft made it a point to state that third-party games sell better on Xbox 360 than any other system, including Wii and PS3 combined. However, it neglected to mention that the majority of its big-sellers also carry Teen- and Mature-rated labels. It's exactly why 360 owners can't wait for the blood-soaked Fallout 3 and Gears 2 and yet couldn't care less about having an avatar party with friends. This coveted casual audience -- there's simply not much legitimate proof that it stretches beyond Wii.

To another point, I found myself perpetually amazed at all the rip-offs disguised as innovations in Microsoft's presentation. Avatars have been around forever, of course, but there's little point in denying that the Xbox Mii-60s are inspired directly by Nintendo's own. And what about Lips? SingStar, anyone? And what of the EyeToy-like You're in the Movies? If Microsoft thinks any of these titles will do well on its system, great. The more titles the merrier, I suppose. But these are hardly pioneering undertakings.

All said and done, it was Fallout 3 and Gears 2 that left a lasting impression on me. The forced Avatars and newly designed interface only left me shaking my head.

I like how he doesn't mention Fable 2. :lol:

7:55 am PT: We're just outside the Kodak Theater waiting to get in! In the meantime, have you prepped your bingo card? We were so close yesterday.

8:12: We're inside the Kodak Theater, waiting to be let in - a Nintendo representative encouraged us to grab some food and, after a brief period spent searching, we informed her that there was in fact no food. None. Anywhere. Do they expect us to resort to cannibalism!?

8:40: And we're in!

8:43: Right now, techno music is being pumped into the hall while we watch pictures of extremely happy people projected on screen.

8:47: Nintendo's presentation is a lot less flashy presentation than Microsoft's, pics seem a lot more community-focused than game-focused.

8:50: People seem to smell a bit less than at the Microsoft event. However, they promised us donuts and there isn't a single one in sight.

8:52: Side note: The very first image we were bombarded with upon entry was that of totally old people playing Wii. Confidence ... failing.

8:56: Notably absent from the slideshow: Anyone who looks anything at all like the bloggers and reporters in the audience.

8:59: From what we can see the stage behind the scrim is pretty spartan. A couple of stools and not to much else. Although there's a tall cylindrical booth on the left. Nintendo transporter? WiiTranslocate.

9:06: Here we go! Happy music, happy people, healthy people. The lights have dimmed and we're off. Is that the ending music from Top Chef? No, Project Runway.
9:07: More images of non-traditional gamers gaming, children, elderly, social gaming. We promise to keep the world smiling it says. Cammie Dunaway: Good morning! As you can see my name is not Reggie. I do have a lot in common with my boss - we both have a lot of fun. Just like the people you saw in the video, I can't stop smiling. As a mom, it helps to work for Nintendo.
9:08: Cammie Dunaway is enthusiastically smiling and has already starting regailing us with stories about her children. Says my son - Mom, I love you more than anything, and not just because you being me videogames. I can say that playing videogames is a safer way to impress your kids than some other things I've tried. Shows off snowboarding with her son.

But on the last day, the fates pushed my right off my board and I landed right on my left wrist. The ground won, my wrist lost. It's one long ride when you're being pulled by the ski patrol.

9:10: I don't like a smile taken off my face for anything, and I really don't like giving up. So I decided as a snowboarder -- All I really needed was a little help from a friend. A talented friend. And today I found the perfect answer. Reveal on left, Shaun White. On a Wii Balance board. To the tune of Social Distortion. Ring of Fire.

9:11: Shaun White Snowboarding. Graphics pretty jaggy but have kind of a fun look. Ladies and gentlement, the gold metalist in the men's halfpipe at Tourino, Mr. Shaun White.

9:13: I understand from the guys at Ubi that they designed this game from the ground up for the Balance Board.
Shaun: I had input on the game, how the mountain should look. Cammie: I heard anyone can just jump on the board. Says that board enhances the gameplay. He leans forward to go faster and that really works in the game. Shaun has apparently just grasped the balance board concept. She gets on a board next to Shaun.

Said Shaun: Let's do the halfpipe. "Just because you being me videogames." Cammie's now awkwardly calibrating her board as everyone in the audience pretends not to be extremely uncomfortable. Shaun: I should get some lessons from you! Cammie: Yeah, I didn't hurt my wrist! Shaun exits left. This game arrives exclusively for Wii by year-end.

9:14: Please welcome Nintendo's Global President, Staoru Iwata

9:15: But a different non-balance board version is coming to other systems. But they didn't tell us that. I think everyone is recognizing that a true paradigm shift has taken place in the gloabl game market. Five years ago in May 2003. I addressed E3 for the first time as President of Nintendo. I still recall that day. Because I knew that everyone attending held a pessimistic view about Nintendo's future.

9:16: That year was not enjoyable, but I knew that people were just using a common sense view of the game market. Even Nintendo employees could not have imagined that five years later the market would respond so fast that we could be selling millions of bathroom scales around the world. Iwata is rocking the Fils-Amie semi turtleneck, we hope he cleared that look with Reggie, or things are about to get weird. Common sense doesn't seem to make much sense anymore. What has changed in the new paradigm? First, we are not selling game which can stay for a long period of time. In the past it was impossible to expect a game to sell for two or three years. But titles like Nintendogs and Brain age are doing that.

nintendo's been challenging themselves. The mario team and zelda team had an assignment to bring new titles to wii, but small developers are doing great stuff too. expaning userbase. pics of grannies and cute 20 something girl playing DS. the standard nintendo "we saw the untapped market first" that we expected.

europe's selling 200k DS a week. That's holiday numbers. same with Wii in the US -- holiday numbers. tell us something we don't know.

talking about casual games. start with wii sports, wii play. evolves to kart, fit. highlights GH3, mentions how wii is best selling version. Is this a lead in? please say yes.

ahaha....makes a joke about how imitators take away what was once fresh. nice dig at MS and sony. talking about how they need new stuff. new ways to enrich the experience. "engaged, enriched, enthused" is their new company motto. Here comes new stuff.

now that eddie's back, i'm going to let you guys do the updates haha

yeah sorry guys, had a busy morning at work today. :(

9:17: Also Super Moario Bros and Mariokart DS. These products are evergreen. This, I think is a big change. (Oh, so that's where all the BoomBlox sales went.) Second I believe it is no longer common that players only seek new titles with more good looking graphics and more sophisticated content. I am aware that great numbers of players around the world do demand increasingly gorgeous games, and we challenge ourselves to meet these needs. Our internal team which makes Mario and Zelda games are both hard at work -- they will bring new titles to Wii.

9:18: On the other hand it is also true that games with new concepts like Wii Sports and Wii Fits have received support from customers for entirely different reasons. Small teams with small budgets can capture wide audiences if they have a great idea. This is the challenge and oportunity of WiiWare. Mario and Zelda teams will bring new titles to Wii, which isn't particularly surprising. Although it would be a surprise if the system gets two headliners in the generation. Suddenly the user base has expanded. Look at this picture.

9:19: Iwata's extremely proud of a girl playing a game. We have learned that intuitive interfaces can help attract those who would never traditionally consider videogames. It has changed how gamers see themselves. Today game systems are more likely purchased for themselves at any time of the year.

9:20: So far, this feels suspiciously like the same back-patting we've been subjected to for the past few Nintendo pressers. Yes, you've expanded the market, we get it. People are buying 200K Wii a week as if every week was a holiday.

9:21: Here in American peopel have bought an avg of 700K Wii systems a month, numbers not normally seen outside of November and December. Last year I said we would like to destroy the barriers between gamers and non-gamers. Wii Sports and Wii Play made this possible, but weren't enough to prove this trend. Mario Kart and WiiFit continued this converstaion. But the Wii version of Guitar Hero is outselling all others! Isn't it possible that the Wii version is outselling the others because ... well, the others had Rock Band?

9:22: At Nintendo we believe progress is being made to destroy this psychological barrier (between gamer and non-gamer). Sooner or later people will become tired of new forms of change. This happens when other people try to speed this up. For all of us in the videogame industry, there is danger in standing still. Common sense is not enough, but there are answers.

9:23: Personally, I believe we must find new ways for players to feel engaged. Ooh, a mega burn on other companies aping Nintendo's changes. Hint hint, MS Avatars, hint hint. To feel engaged, enriched, even in interactions we wouldn't normally call games. The overall experience must be improved via enthusiasm. This is of course easier to say than do. We at Nintendo always change ourselves to change paradigms.

9:24: We seek fresh surprises, and I hope you will enjoy the ones we have for you today. The first one fits with a larger social trend of consumers acting as creators. We believe Nintendo can add something to engage players in new ways. Please consider this key Holiday release. Katsuya Eguchi is talking on the screen about Animal Crossing. Talking about how he came up with the idea. I wanted people to feel like they were playing together, even if at different times.

9:25: Animal Crossing City Folk coming to wii in 2008. The town is where you live and do the things you like. There are no required goals, and people are free to do things their own way. Graphics look a lot like GC version. The town is where you live and do the things you like. There are no required goals, and people are free to do things their own way. People feel like things are hapening in real time. You could really feel like you are visiting a realistic world with a 24-hour clock year-round.

9:26: The city is a brand-new place to explore in the Wii version of Animal Crossing. You can put items up for sale. City is a more 3D environment. An academy to keep tabs on other player There is an academy, fashion designers, stores, beauty salon. You can put on a mask to look like your Mii.

WII HEADSET! WII HEADSET!!! VOICE CHAT!!!! VOICECHAT!

Sad that we're so excited over something so simple.

LOL....

9:27: You can write letters to other players and attach pictures and even send to the Wii message board and cell phones. Aww, he's sending a letter to Reggie. I hope he has time to read it. New microphone option: Wii Speak. Featuring a community microphone. You can speak to other players in any other room in the world.

People doing fishing competition, talking trash. It allows rooms of people to talk to other rooms of people, a much more community focused app than an insular headset.

9:28: You can get a sense of the personality of a player. See how they decorate their room, if it is neat or messy. It is also fun to see how they set up their town, as it tells you what kind of person they are, and I think that's really fun. Most of the options are the one's you're used to. Seeing how people set up their towns, etc. Looking ahead, I want players to continue to be able to create their own worlds, to continue to communicate with others in a variety of ways, and to have a place where players can connect with each other.

9:30: Introducing President and COO: Reggie Fils Amie. Looks like writing letters with WiiMote is going to be a lot easier than with controller. Says Reggie: "Good morning. When I last talked to you from an E3 stage, I said we were pleased, but not close to being satisfied. With Animal Crossing by end of this year with WiiSpeak option, of course we're pleased." My god he's an imposing figure of a man.

holy shiznit does DS sell. Like, as much as everything else combined. Expecting 100 million sales mark soon. Talks about "standard" product cycle and how DS sales are still on record-setting pace. Kudos to pokemon, says Reggie. 180 million combined sales for all pokemon titles. DS software is 29% ahead of last year.

talking about how ad campaign for females (ie america ferrara) have been effective in terms of sales.

Now moving on to Wii. Expect that Wii will be the best selling console in US when June NPD numbers are released. No system has sold more games during first 19 months of availability (and still a lower attach rate -- wow). Talked about establishing flagship titles and also making new titles for forked approach of hardcore and casual games. Now, 3rd parties are doing well. 19 games from 11 publishers have sold over 400k in US. Not bad.

rayman rabbids tv party. uses balance board (nothing new) still amusing. cow ski jumping? fall 2k8

COD:W@W. gfx look decent, some great particle effects. co-op mode. flamethrower. coming soon.

just kidding -- cami's back. time to talk about DS. Many more girls now have DS. it was 70/30 M/F in 2k5. 2k7 is 52/48.

9:32: We're even more pleased with our marketplace momentum. After all, in May, accoridng to NPD, Wii sales hit 10 million systems. DS hit 20 million systems. He's looking fit. No, you know what, he's lookin' WiiFit. This combines to more than $5b at retail. But we're not satisfied. That's because there are tens of millions of people still not on, and millions of gamers who are hungry for what's next. We want to fulfil both those needs. Uh oh, we've got a bar graph. Shows lifetime global hardware unit sales chart.
9:33: Largest bar belongs to Nintendo DS. We expect that total DS worldwide sales will grow to almost 100M systems. Now some people still claim 2007 was the peak year for DS. Still 12% ahead of last year's record! Of course, these sales are led by key franchises, and this year that franchise was Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
This grossed all Pokemon Sales for handhelds to over $180M. Pokemon is driving DS sales. That's right, that Pikachu is yellow because he's COVERED IN GOLD. DS software sales are 29% ahead of last year.

9:34: We believe the next NPD numbers will show a shift back to DS. Of course, that's because of those evergreen titles Mr. Iwata mentioned. Reggie is pitting DS and Wii against eachother as bitter rivals fighting for the top slot. It's funny. There seems to be an unlimited number of people looking for a way to get into our game. For Wii the sales trajector is climbing even steeper. (Shows chart) First year vs. second 19 months - "Our historic sales pace is actually increasing." When those NPD numbers are released on Thursday, we will not be surprised if it shows that Wii is the best selling console of this generation in America as it is in the world. We're convinced Nintendo's highest paid employee is the guy that makes charts to look as embarrassing as possible for PS3 and 360.
9:35: No system has ever sold more games in its first 19 months of availability. Joshua F.The sales advantage after year one continues to grow. Wii's biggest software sales competitor? Why, the PS2 of course. One one hand, we make sure we leveraged our stable of stars early in the generation to satisfy gamers. And now with new titles like Wii Sports and Wii Play, we confirmed that non-gamers took notice. But now a new dynamic is emerging:
Our creative third-party partners are finding success with Wii.

9:36: 19 Third Party games have exceeded sales of 400K units in America alone. Those titles come from 11 different publishers. Acti, Ubi, LucasArts, Sega, Midway, Disney, EA, Take Two, Konami, Capcom, Majesco have all had 400,000+ sellers on the console. Is this the platform that will be dominated by casual games, or where people can freshed up legendary IP, or a place for new franchises? Well, the correct answer is all of the above.

9:37: The Wii console library continues to grow faster than other consoles. There's no way we could give you even a quick glimpse at what's on its way. That's why we're only looking at 3 games that take advantage of the interface options available on Wii. Wii's library size is crushing others, we decide not to remind him that the bulk of those are awful. Star Wars The Clone Wars: First game focused on is The Close Wars. Trailer being shown. Gameplay looks a bit like Wii Boxing. Comes Holiday 2008. Yeah, there's lightsaber dueling, but ... wow, we would have shown these graphics on a slightly smaller screen, if you know what we mean.

9:38: Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party. Uses balance board to "surf the skies" Uses balance board along with controllers to simulate snow rides. As if to illustrate the point, R3: TVP looks markedly better.You've gotta know how to use the Wii.

9:39: Call of Duty World At War. FPS. Using Zapper. Co-op Mode confirmed for COD. "Coming Soon"

9:40: Cammie comes back on stage. As you can see, Wii creativity is mushrooming, but that's only half our story. We're seeing World of War. While is looks a little less impressive than others, there's a solid draw distance and a lot going on the screen. PS, watching people play it with the blaster is downright disturbing. But what about games that travel with you? Portable games taker a bigger bite of the software pie -- what's driving this? New players. Here's a giant clue as to why: In 2005 30 percent of portable recipients were female. By 2006, that jumped to 46%.

9:41: Last year, that has reached parity with males. The DS is universal appeal. It's weird. You've got a 16 percent jump in female usage from 05 to 06, but that dropped to 02 next year. Activision reports that Guitar Hero: On Tour sold more than 350K copies.

9:42: The DS is also the only dedicated platform where you will find Will Wright's Spore this year. Now DS trailers being shown. Next up will be Spore, CC.Spore Creatures. It's all about evolving your creature. With the DS, it's focused on the creature creator. Player creativity and sharing.

9:43: Takes advantage of stylus to add to creature, and the ability to share creations. (end of trailers) Cammie: Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia will hit on November 10. It's hard to say, but it looks like graphics seem a bit less stylized than what we originally saw on DS. Perhaps trying to cash in on the PC version's success?

9:44: The appeal of DS also extends to the core: GTA: Chinatown Wars arrives on DS this winter! (applause) new game engine, characters, and the same free-range gameplay people have come to expect. Cammie mentions free-ranging gameplay in GTA: CTW. We think she may be a little confused. People have been using the DS to redefine gaming.

9:45: That spirit of invention and reinvention applies to the DS. Here's what I mean: I'm sure many of you spend too much time in airports. So what if DS and air travel came together in a different way: Why can't my DS provide info on where I can get my luggage, or my gate? What about the nearest ATM or Mexican Restaurant?
this is all being tested. Showing a DS app that will tell you information about your flight, luggage, but it's just being tested ATM.

9:46: Sports: People at Safeco field are already using their DS to look up box scores and ordering the Ichi-roll! Could the DS earn a spot in your kitchen? Cooking Nanny in Japan has turned it into an electronic cookbook, and an English version is coming in November.

9:47: Let me build on the DS idea. You all know what this is: The Wii Remote. Shows off a little accesory that plugs in and turns Wii Remote into a more repsonsive and intense controller. He's showing off the Wii MotionPlus

9:48: We're going to show you how this worthy successor to the remote comes to life. Wii Sports Resort
literally "a day at the beach." combines fun in the sun with a variety of activities. Cammie and Bill Trinnen come out to display. One Motion Plus packaged with every Wii Sports Resort. There's also going to be an extended jacket packed in. Showing frisbee, Cammie moving wrist, being reflected on screen. Okay Cammie, just swing your arm to throw the disc.

9:52: Bill jokes that the game really is more Reggie's speed. They move on to a sword dueling game, which is definitely what we think of when we think of beach sports. Maybe the sword-fighting in the next Red Steel won't suck as much? Reggie takes on Cammie and Cammie goes down!

9:55: (Reggie knocks Cammie off the platform) Reggie: That's why they call me the Reginator! Cammie: Bring it on, baby. (Cammie takes out Reggie ... They high-five) Reggie: Looks like with one match each we have a draw. We may have just seen the birth of the Caminator! We totally think Reggie let her win. Oh, and the games are going to be available on the show floor. (Mild laughter) Reggie back on alone. When you think of Summer Vacation, some things come to mind, and Wii Sports Resort covers those. Right, like sword fighting. But with Wii MotionPlus, many developers are already contemplated what they can do with it. We started with similing faces, and believe there will be more when we release Wii Sports Resort next Spring. But before we go

9:56: We'd like to introduce one new thing that uses the controller and is sure to create a lot of smiles. New smiles, in fact. (Smoke, bright lights, mysterious music) Stage is darkened as lights strobe. Virtual drumming going on There's a faux-hawked dude playing drums, using balance board and Remote / nunchuck to simulate drumming, using bare feet on balance booard (looks like air dumming). This cat looks like a pro, but the drumming itself sounds a bit of a mess to us.

9:57: (Keith Moon moment of chaos) Shigeru Miyamoto on stage The guy keeps stopping for applause breaks like he's not just a dude waving his arms around. "Blowing" on wii remote to simulate a sax, drummer guy is joining is (Playing jazz with the drummer) Oh, this is WiiMusic by the way. Miis on screen in a groovy jazz atmosphere (Shiggy is grooving)

9:58: (Shiggy getting jiggy? Sorry...) The music they're making is really, really awful. But we're hoping they're just nervous. It's not baby-making music, lets put it that way. (Warm applause). Are they for real with this? Shigeru: I would like to introduce you to Wii Music. (speaking in Japanese with translator) This game is one that we began designing along with Wii Play when we were first finalizing plans for Wii.

10:00: If you want something that everyone in the family can enjoy regardless of age or gener, music is a must. But Wii Music is a slightly different play experience than you've seen with other music games. Now most music games require you to press buttons with precise timing to symbols on screen. But we've designed Wii Music to allow everyone, inclusing those who can't read music to enjoy the experience of playing music. The experience is going to be less "rhythm based" we get the sense Now there's no need to closely follow any notes to play these songs. All that you ahve to do is hold the Wii Remote and moves your hands and body like you would a real instrument, and Wii Music recognizes that and plays the song.

Eddiedundidit
07-15-2008, 11:07 AM
10:01: So iI was just holding the Wii Remote pretending I was playing the sax. Shiggy is explaining that he wasn't actually playing, but rather was PRETENDING to play. For those of you who are familiar, this song is from an F-Zero song. We're grateful to him for clearing that up. In Wii music, you'll be able to play over 50 different instruments. Just like that. For example, the piano. The violin is a slightly more unique instrument. Wow, 50 instruments? Is Nintendo going to beat everyone to the Keytar punch? You hold the strings with left and, and motion of your right hand adjusts the volume. Just like this. Of course guitar you play like you would a real guitar.

10:02: There's a variety of percussion instruments. And of course behind me we have a professional drummer. His name is Robbie Drums. What he's playing a separate mode that uses the Balance Board to create a complete drum simulator. You know those digital pianos that you can program so that whatever note you hit it plays the next correct note in the song, and all you have to do is worry about the timing? That's what we're being reminded of.

bonkman
07-15-2008, 11:08 AM
miyamoto starts speaking via translator. says wiimusic has been in development since the beginning. instead of pressing buttons in time with on-screen, but now everyone can do stuff. don't need to follow notes or music guides. all you have to do is hold the remote and move your body. like air guitar/sax/drums, etc. wii chooses the notes for you automatically. you control when the notes are expressed, though, via button press.

oh -- he was playing an f-zero song. i guess. You can play 50 difft instruments. shows piano, violin, guitar, some cool percussion. The drummer earlier is a pro. He is playing a separate mode, the drum simulator which uses the balance board for pedals. Oh -- and it includes lessons to teach you how to play the drums.

miyamotos undershirt is awesome.

reminds people how he conducted an orchestra at E3 a few years ago. This mode is in, along with a hand-bell choir as well as a few others. Wont evaluate your performance, but will record music videos. one player serves as director?

Time to jam.

ooh -- one guy gets to play cowbell. insert your fave SNL lines.

Reggie and Cammie back on stage. Reggie; What we've tried to do today is look for a place where gamers are more engaged, more enriched, and more enthused. 10:09: Cammie: Consider snowboarding where you don't hurt yourself. Using WiiSpeak to talk to your friends in Animal Crossing. Even using the new Wii MotionPlus as a sword to help your boss feel better about himself. There is no question that games can make us feel better in new and compelling games. And there is only one place all these games (lists all games shown) right along side unique franchises like Pokemon, WiiSportsResort, and WiiMusic. Nintendo simply brings more smiles to more faces.

10:10: As it wraps, we have to say that Nintendo did a pretty good job of trying to show that they still care about non-grandma players. What was surprising was the lack of real fan service. To whit: No real Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc.

10:11: Reggie: To conclude, form the moment Wii went on sale, we all heard the same word; 'Fad.' I'm here to tell you today that 'fad' is no longer operable. The paradigm shift is right around the corner. The only way to keep the advantage is to create new advantages. Consumers are saying "yeah, i like that!" The fact is that Mr. Iwata and Mr. Miyamoto have created a company that looks for the next thing. Not just the evolution in look, but the revolution in feel. Nintendo will create the next advantage to keep you smiling. Thank you for coming, and we look forward to seeing you in the next couple days. (Lights up!) Oh, the final presentation is a bunch of pics of the audience (More smiles on screen from Cammie!) Now we can't leave until we see if we're in it. Curses.

And that's it! Thanks for joining us, stay tuned for the Sony liveblog next.

wow. just wow. I'm gonna quit my job and apply for NOA marketing.

Conducted rather poorly, I say they scrape by with a B- for unveiling GTA, voicechat, and showing just how accurate the motionplus is.

WiiMusic could be really cool. However, they didn't show that it was. Almost as poor a performance as the "You're in the Movies" MS show. It's like they didn't even try. Door's wide open for Sony.

For nintendo's sake, I hope they pull together some news at their booth over the next few days. I mean -- remember that bingo card Eddie posted? I think maybe two squares were covered, tops.

most likely, though some DS games have VO. I think the symbolism is more important than anything -- while there are plenty of violent games on it (mortal kombat, the ward, etc), it still has the "kiddie" reputation. Getting GTA without PSP getting GTA is a nice catch.

In case you couldn't keep up with all the announcements, here are the highlights from Nintendo's E3 2008 press conference:

* Ubisoft's Shaun White Snowboarding to use Wii Balance Board
* Nintendo selling 200k Wiis a week, 700k a month
* Animal Crossing: City Folk coming to Wii in 2008
* Nintendo introduces the Wii Speak community microphone
* Wii Sports Resort coming to the Wii, with Motion Plus in tow
* English version of DS recipe application coming to America in November
* Nintendo announces GTA: Chinatown Wars
* Nintendo announces Wii Music with 50 instruments

Update: It appears we misheard Reggie. Nintendo is selling 200k DS systems a week, not Wiis. But they are still selling 700k Wiis a month, and both system sales figures are pretty astounding.

Upon reviewing what I missed while typing (and from Iwata's accent) and thinking about it for a little while longer, I'm going to change my grade for nintendo to a B. The presentation of it was godawful -- there's no question about that. Their ending didn't come NEAR the punch of FF13 for MS, and the beginning was slow too until White came onstage. Plus, their speaking skills are pretty lackluster and they mostly just talked about how well they were doing in sales. The only good thing in the way of speaking was the digs at MS for copying them. But if you go through the actual information:

- GTA on DS is big.
- VoiceChat: I missed it while typing, but WiiSpeak lets people in the same room use the same mic.
- MotionPlus really is spectacular. In the hands of other developers, I can't wait to see what results. Heck, we saw 1:1 sword fighting being demonstrated.
- Wii Music may be very cool. We'll wait for reviews. If it really does what it's supposed to accurately, it'll be worth it for the drum trainer alone.
- Mario and Zelda teams have new projects. I misunderstood Iwata, thinking that he was lauding their past efforts in a lead-in to how smaller developers are also faring well on Wii. But apparently they each have something in the works. That's big.
- animal crossing and a new pokemon (albeit a spinoff)

the voice chat features and name dropping raise it to a B IMO. That said, there is so much more that we all wanted them to talk about and got nary a mention.

Welcome to a world where innovation and these casual/fun games rule. I love Nintendo, but damn it none of those games i will plan on playing. Good that chat and motion will be improved/added, but how much will that cost me? I'm starting to consider selling the Wii and have it as a come and go console like the 360. I cant play Smash alone with an occassional game here and there.
Good for the DS though, GTA! Should be interesting.
Also note, no console update (as expected) and no storage solutions (ouch).

I forgot balance board games and spore creatures were on there. Two cheap marks, but not as cheap as the one on the free space :lol: So they got 6, and that's being very lenient about the guitar hero announcement. More importantly, if you had people rank those squares, all would be pretty near the bottom with the possible exceptions of AC and peripheral.

E3: Disney Announces Disney Sing It, Full E3 Lineup

Disney Interactive Studios has announced its complete lineup of handheld and home console titles to be displayed at the E3 Media & Business Summit, including Disney Sing It, a new multi-platform karaoke game, and Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force, a Nintendo DS spin-off of Disney’s teen- and ‘tween-targeted virtual world Club Penguin.

The following titles have been confirmed to be showing at Disney's E3 booth this week:

- Pure is an off-road racing game developed by Black Rock Studio and scheduled to ship in September 2008 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The game will focus on performing aerial jumps and airborne tricks while riding on four-wheel vehicles through different locations around the world. Players can customize the vehicles with 65,000 different combinations and race up to 15 other players online.

- Due for the holiday season, Disney Sing It will enable players to perform over 35 songs from Disney franchises like Camp Rock, High School Musical, and Hannah Montana. Announced for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, and PC, the game will have single and multiplayer options, with a practice mode for trying out vocal exercises. Players can unlock and download digital skins to personalize the karaoke game, too. New song packs and bonus content will be available through Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

- In Ultimate Band, which is being developed by Fall Line Studio for the Wii and Nintendo DS, players can use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk or their stylus, sans peripherals, to play classic rock tracks like Whip It, My Generation, and Fell In Love With a Girl. An option to create custom tracks will be available as well. The game is slated to release during the holiday months.

- Planned for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC, Bolt is based on the upcoming animated Disney film starring a dog (Bolt) with super powers. The game will expand on the movie’s plot with new characters, environments, and stories this November.

- Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force is being developed for the Nintendo DS by 1st Playable Productions and will introduce kids to new adventures in the Club Penguin world, enabling them to complete secret agent missions and solve mysteries as a covert agent in the Elite Penguin Force. In addition to accessing Disney’s DGamer service, players can connect the Nintendo DS game to the virtual Club Penguin world to unlock special features and upload coins to their online penguin account. Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force will ship this holiday season.

- In Disney Fairies: Tinker Bell, also a Nintendo DS exclusive integrating Disney’s DGamer service, players take on the role of Peter Pan fairy Tinker Bell to explore Pixie Hollow and play mini-games. They will also be able to go on quests, create fashion trends, and interact with others when the game ships in fall 2008.

- High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance for the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, and PC features new music, locations, and characters from the High School Musical 3: Senior Year movie. Players move to the rhythm of the songs using the controllers unique to each video game console, such as Wii Remote and Nunchuk for Wii. Bundled versions with High School Musical-branded dance mats will also be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 system.

- High School Musical 3: Senior Year for the Nintendo DS will use a rhythm-based game mechanic with songs taken from the movie. Players can also take High School Musical-themed quizzes and capture photos of the characters to put in their yearbooks. Both Senior Year and Senior Year Dance will debut fall 2008.

- Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals will be Disney’s follow-up to its 2007 sci-fi action RPG, Spectrobes. Players take on the role of two planetary patrol officers to excavate and awaken fossilized creatures, eventually training and using them in battles against enemies. Due October, the sequel will include a full 3D perspective, multiplayer support via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, a map for exploration, new excavation and battle features, new Code Input Cards, new creatures, and more.

Said Disney Interactive Studios executive vice president and general manager Graham Hopper: “The notion that video games only appeal to a small subset of consumers is long gone, and the demand for titles that reach every member of the family is rapidly increasing. Whether leveraging popular Disney franchises such as High School Musical and Disney Fairies, or through innovative new properties such as Ultimate Band and Pure, Disney Interactive Studios is the leader in delivering broad appeal entertainment.”

opens with a few jokes about how stressful E3 is. Talks about the stage and how famous it is. Trying to make Snake, Kratos, etc at the level of movie stars. At least GOW3 will be shown. claims PS3 is hitting its stride and that 2k8 is "Year of the PS3."

Now says that PS3 is just getting started. That was a change in 2 sentences. Must be seeing if the audience is awake. Talking about Sony games back in the day. PSone + cd, PS2 + dvd....talks about looking for the future and looking at 10 year product cycles.

10:23 am PT: We're en route to Sony now, stay tuned! In the meantime, have you prepped your bingo card? We haven't won yet this week.

11:11: We're waiting outside the entrance. Tons of people in front of the entrance to the show. Veronica Belmont is getting tons of fan response for Qore. People are taking pictures with her.

11:25: We've just taken our seats at Sony's conference in front of what could only be described as a wall of screens: 7 main screens and roughly 64 smaller screens. OMG, Vaio LCD's everywhere. You'd think this was a Sony event.

Estranged Big Three execs Phil Harrison and Peter Moore spotted in the wild.

There's a couple players up front playing, from left to right: MGS4, PixelJunjk Eden, GT5: Prologue, SOCOM, Echochrome, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Number of smiling old people: 0. The players are most definitely not smiling.
11:29: SOCOM is looking fun. Lots of players on screen. Of course, the dude playing MGS4 has been staring at a cutscene since the moment we walked in.

11:32: Just chatted with Xbox's Aaron Greenberg – he's been following our liveblogs from his phone, so now he's totally reading this and thinking, "Whoa, meta."

11:37: Triangles, squares, and circles galore. We're at the right place apparently. FYIL It's 68 panels, not 64. Shots os last year's games: Uncharted, Haze... A video montage of some of PS3's biggest games – already out and upcoming. We're seeing Uncharted, Resident Evil 5, Little Big Planet, Buzz, MGS4, SOCOM, Resistance, Killzone 2. Not all PS3 games either – PSP and PS2 are making an appearance. It's the PlayStation "family" of products afterall, remember? They just showed off a shot of Bioshock, too!

11:39: Ladies and gentelemen, please welcome Jack Tretton. "Thanks for coming out everybody. I can't tell you how much fun we've had over hte past several months putting together this press conference. The truth is: this is the most stressful event you can imagine. It's taken two years off of my life."

11:40: He's recounting all the famous events that happened on this stage. Tretton isn't bad as a stand-up comedy act. He recounts Jack Palance's one handed pushup: "And thanks to my job and my bi-annual workout regiment, you're not likely to see that here. But Jack Pallance is dead and I'm still here ..." -- *groans* -- "2008 is the year of the PS3, but as great as 2008 is, we're just getting started."

11:41: Says PlayStation is hitting its stride, finally. Just getting started. Just begun. Sounds like a bit of an excuse for the past couple years, eh? The seeds of the playstation brand were laid nearly 15 years ago this week

11:43: Says Tretton: "From the very beginning our customers came to expect something very different from us. What really made SCE different from the very beginning is we took a longer look ahead. When most companies were looking at a 3 to 5 year lifecycle, we were on a 10 year. Really hitting hard on the long product lifecycle thing, saying their consoles have at least a 10-year lifecycle. In other words: "Thanks for waiting."

11:44: GTA: SA came along in year 4. Shadow of the colossus in year 5, God of War 2 in year 7. Interesting that they mentioned Ico along with FFX and GTA. Not exactly a big seller (although it's one of our favorite games ever). IBM is actually using the CEll processor to power its newest supercomputer .he's mentioning FOlding@home numbers

11:46: "If we stopped to ask consumers if they needed all this horsepower, they may have said no." He recalls Henry Ford's quote, "If I asked my customers what htey wanted, they'd have said a faster horse. Games like MGS4 aren't just exclusive to the Playstatin 3, they're only possible on the PlayStation 3"

11:47: Games like MGS4 on PS3 is a good reminder of what it means to have exclusive content. He says PS3 has more exclusives than any other platform. Wonder if he'll be avoiding Final Fantasy XIII today?

bonkman
07-15-2008, 12:50 PM
Tries to draw the conclusion that PS3 is slower selling right now because of this long-term vision. ie it's the console of the future. Shows love for Folding@Home. Wants another 10 year cycle for PS3. Claims that PS3 is more than what the fans want, and that that's a good thing. Like Henry Ford.

Drives home BR victory. and the PS3 is the most futureproof BR player. Claims MGS4 is only possible on BR. talks more about the media all-in-one. and now, time to focus on games.

Claims MGS4 exceeded expectations. That it's the "true meaning of exclusive content." Says that's way better than exclusive DLC. Huh. Must not have rewritten from yesterday.

The motto "play, create, share" is all about user-generated content, social networking, and gaming. He's going after the non-gamer here, saying you can play it with your six year-old daughter.

11:58: Alex Evans, Media Molecule on stage. "Just think, if LBP can help me make E3 more "interesting, just think of what" it can do for gamers. Oh man, Sack Boy is taunting LA with his Celtics uniform! This is cute: they created their sales presentation as a LBP level! (Rather than a Powerpoint)

12:00: Best. Presentation. Ever. Okay this is disgustingly cute. Perhaps some distraction from the stats, but we're digging it. He's breaking down the sales numbers – it's still pretty dry, but we can't fault him for the presentation. "Starting in 2008, we'll engage in distribution in latin america as well" PS3s and red peppers falling into a train on its way to Latin America!

They put a celtics jersey on Sackboy. Interesting.

They're using LBP to make a pseudo-graph about Sony's strengths. Clever presentation, figures are less than stellar.

guy says billion when he means million. huh. No wonder he thinks his company is amazing. :lol:

PSN account and some features will be accessible from computers. One ID a la XBL. Social networking, games, movies, etc all available.

Cites exponential growth. Doesn't mention that's typical for the industry.

and now for some actual news:

New PSN title, ratchet and clank future: quest for booty. Available late summer. sequel to tools of destruction. New "weapon" is like Samus's grapple voltage. Looks fun, though. Textures look better than R2 :lol: Will cost $15.

12:05: Here's a sample of those titles: Yakuza 2, Force Unleashed, NCAA Football, Tiger Woods, Warriors Orochi 2, Singstar Pop vol. 2, Madden, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. "The PS2, at $129, is a great entry into the phenomena of social gaming - ideal for playing with family and friends."

12:06: The PS2 will not only come with Lego Batman the video game but animated movie Justice League for $149. So looks like Sony is all about "being connected". Talking about PSN now.

12:09: Starting this Fall, all Playstation users will have a single sign-on. He's talking PC, PS3, etc. "They want us to work to make PSN the best gaming experience in the industry." Sweet - all PSN members will have a single sign-on (SSO), but we gotta wonder if those aliases will carry into games -- do we still need a separate name for MGS4? Resistance? Separate friends lists? Do tell!

12:11: Tretton's PSN name is DoctorGrip120? Add him! He's talking PlayStation Store update. "Just last month we had more than 20m pieces of content download, now at 180m pieces downloaded (since Nov. 2006) I'd like to introduce you all to Ratchet and Clank Future, Quest for Booty. QFB is a new concept -- it's a shorter game at a lower price." Shorter, cheaper... just an expansion, in other words?

12:13: "Quest for Booty is a continuation of R&C Future" Ah, we get to find out what happened to Clank after he was taken away from us at the end of Future. Light and dark gameplay, answers about Clank's mysterious disappearance. "Great introduction into what R&C is all about" Wait... is this the Insomniac briefing or Sony briefing? This summer, for $14.99 You don't always have to choose between quality adn quantity, you can have both (re: PSN games) ZING!

12:14: "I'd like to show you what I mean" FAT Princess looks like a funny PSN downloadable game.

12:20 -- Jack's talking about PlayStation Network and community gaming, which brings us to Home. "I absolutely assure you that when Home is publicly available through our expanded beta program, your patience will be rewarded." Promises great developer and publisher support, with "game spaces" for games like Warhawk and Uncharted.

12:22 -- Downloading full-length movies and TV shows through PlayStation Store -- a "true Sony United effort," he says, thanking the rest of Sony for helping out. PlayStation Network's video delivery service open to business for "all studios." Fox film, MGM, Lionsgate, Warner, Disney, Paramount, Turner, and Funimation will be there at launch. 12:36: Highlights for PSP over the next year: Star Wars, Madden, LocoRoco, NBA, a new Lego franchise, Patapon 2, Buzz quiz game with ad-hoc play

12:38: We've always felt the PSP is the key to Sony owning the living room. This is every bit the hybrid device that we've always imagined. People continue to move from their office to their living room, and now that people can download movies through the PS3, this is the reality that we're building between the PSP and the PSN. With titles everyone wants to watch and play, we're proud to be leading the charge to the living room. Now let's get back to the PS3.

12:41: Developers like working with us because we've embraced multiplatform. For instnace, Google likes working with us. If you hit a homerun in MLB The Show, you can save that video to Google and have it voted on by the community. As Kaz Hirae announced in Tokyo, we're geared up to allow people to see live news, weather, and webcam feeds via Life with PlayStation, which will be available by the end of the month.
