The Spiritualist by Megan Chance
There’s sweet and sensitive, then there’s downright saccharine. Martin’s vapid tale of a young husband who will go to the ends of the earth to grant his dying wife her final wish is a work of unabashed romanticism and heartbreaking sadness that requires readers to suspend disbelief and simply ride the high current of emotion. When starving artist Doss Michaels interrupts the rape-in-progress of supermodel Abbie Coleman in a Charleston park, he sets in motion a fairy-tale love story. Then, a decade into their storybook marriage, during a year spent visiting European art galleries, thanks to five-figure commissions for Doss, Abbie discovers a lump in her breast, the herald of virulent cancer. With seemingly only days left to live, she makes Doss fulfill a promise to repeat their honeymoon trip canoeing down a river in the wilds of Georgia. The arduous journey is rife with Deliverance-style malevolence as Doss and Abby fight off would-be gang rapists (again!), dodge a hurricane, and employ a bush pilot and defrocked priest to help them. Martin’s jejune and hackneyed sixth novel is being touted as his “mainstream debut,” and it may well appeal to fans of Nicholas Sparks, Robert James Waller, and Richard Paul Evans. --Carol Haggas

are you sure you are thinking of this new program - Random House - Read it Forward?
I have only received the original email announcing the program so far.
There is a program that is called First Look at HarperCollins (http://www.harpercollins.com/members/firstlook/) that is more like you describe. I can't find the SD thread right now, but in that program they show you the books, you ask for which you might like to read & review, they choose a few people and send them books, and you are expected to review.
First Look is more like a lottery.
Read it Forward has only said while supplies last - which means more first come-first served to me.

I just received Outstanding in the Field. The Summer Gazpacho recipe half way down the page on the right is from this book. I'm really thrilled with it!
Mine is what I think might be an author's proof, so it's paperback with b&w pictures and not on first quality paper. It's not a problem at all, very readable. In fact, it's kind of fun to think I might be getting the same version the author gets to review and approve.
Really great find, OP. Thanks!

The first go round in July just said "while supplies last".
People received other titles than just the 3 they offered though.
The August offerings were just noticed and posted here yesterday, with their first 200 limit.
My guess is they may have reached the 200 already, BUT I would email anyway!
I (or others) will try to post when there is anything new, if I see it, I will make the title reflect it, too!
good luck!!!

you're welcome.
I haven't noticed that the books are that gender-specific,
perhaps some of the novels have been a bit more feminine, but the program is not aimed at either gender, specifically.

I think that it could be done on SD,
SD rules say no selling on SD, and trades must be for $5 and under.
(although the Lounge Mods DID allow a trading thread for movies a while back.)
These books are advanced copies and cannot be sold in normal resale book markets,
so, imho, their value is under $5.
Media Mail shipping on an average sized hardcover is around $3.
The problem can be, just as other trading threads, when people don't send their trade and someone gets screwed.
I'm not going to set up a trade thread for them, if someone wants to talk to a Mod to do that, go ahead...
certainly, they should be able to be listed for trade in the Trading thread!

A mother's extraordinary act of forgiveness nearly tears her family apart, in a powerful debut novel that's perfect for readers of Jodi Picoult and Elizabeth Berg. Powerful, shocking and raw, this first novel about the murder of a child and its aftermath is getting rave reviews from early readers.
3) SIGNED copy of WHERE THE RIVER ENDS by Charles Martin

Warning: This book could break your heart.
An ordinary man is about to give the love of his life the most extraordinary gift anyone can give: The chance to live—and die—on her own terms. Set against the beauty of Charleston and the unpredictable waters of the St. Mary's River, Charles Martin's remarkable new novel shows us a love that is as deep and eternal as the river itself.
