yeah i remember the whole Lars vs. Napster thing when it happened. but i also remember lars saying: "i dont care if you download our songs, i just dont want you to download our songs before the album comes out."
now, obviously that could just be him trying to get his fans back that they lost during that whole deal....but it kinda sorta makes sense what he's talking about. sorta kinda :-)

i think the difference here is they want to control their own music. wether they give it away or sell it would be their choice.

Back in the day Metallica actually wanted people to come to their shows and record them playing live. And it helped them get a fan base built up, that was one of the reason a lot of people were shocked when they did their thing against trading.

I actually disagree with that statement. My statement:
Thank you Metallica. When you filed your lawsuits and made your stink about mp3 filesharing, Napster was the only mainstream program - though not the only program - that allowed people to download mp3s. Thanks to your attacking them, you inspired Morpheus to emerge in Napster's place, which allowed people to easily download your mp3s and music videos/movies, in addition to programs and whatever else one wanted to download. And from there, you inspired Morpheus to be preserved under their new name/ownership of Kazaa, along with the next major technology known as bittorrent. I'm excited to see what next, great technology awaits us, and will always have you to thank for it.
As far as the free music on your site goes? Thanks, but I'm sure most of us already downloaded it for free :)

I am into ripping my CDs to FLAC, but I definitely download MP3s to see if I like the disc first before buying. Bittorrent FTW.

IM a Metallica Fan with alot of internal conflict.
WHile I think the BLack album and everything before it was awsome - and the newer stuff is not that great - I think the new album will be fantastic (or so I hope - Perhaps Im just holding onto to a preconceived idea I have hoping that one day metallica will put out another GOOD ALBUM)
The movie SOME KIND OF MONSTER is a great way to describe metallica. While many fans have given up on them and even gone as far as to ban all Metallica music from their lives (any album) others have just DELT WITH IT - Like the politicians in this country - just roll with the punches GOOD OR BAD.
I have been goingto metallica shows since 1986 (yes saw cliff!) and I never miss a chance to see them, I make sure to go to atleast one show every tour and if they are playing a special show, If i can afford it and it is close - I GO. I recently went to BONNAROO just to see them this summer (that was before they announced OZZFEST - If I would have knows about Ozzfest when they announced the bonnaroo dates I would have just gone to OZZFESTR in TExas instead of Tennessee. The Metallica shows never cease to amaze me, and while over the years some shows have been "dissapointing" they never truely dissapoint completely lIve.... I am just a preconceived, stick in my ways, OLD FAN who wants every Metallica show to be the same, and don;t like change - When they decidced to do a few years accustic for a few songs I hated it , but in the end they always PLAY THE GOOD SHIT - You will never go to a Metallica show where they Don't play "whiplash, Entersandman, Fade to black, ONE, Master of Puppets and Seek and DEstroy" These are the songs they will ALWAYS PLAY AT EVERY SHOW - and have played at every show ince 86 or so.... (with the xception of ONE started in 89 and every show after and Enter Sandman, started in 91 and every show after).
Back to my some kind of monster idea here - As metaliica pisses off it's fans it will always attract new ones.. Even if every ORIGINAL fan they got from 82 till 91 decided never to buy, listen or go to a metallica show again - there will be an army of NEW FANS that will take their place. Metallica as a CONCEPT will never die {while the band members are assholes - especially LARS, heitfield was better as a drunk - Kirk - never did anything to get me mad at him, Jason Newstead(who left) and even Rob T (the new guy) is awsome as he was in suicial tendencies, ozzy and now metallica (all great bands) all change and give off a persona that makes them unique as part of metallica} - Metallica as a Band will always be awsome - They have some shitty concept albums and some shittier records (load/reload/S&M) but the Concept of metallica seems to know what the audience wants - as I never hear too many shitty or crappy songs from those crappy albums Live - it's always the good stuff with a shitty song here or there.
You can curse or talk shit about metallica, I DO and IM A FAN, but Metallica is "SOME KIND OF MONSTER" their fan base never dwindles, they sell out EVERY SHOW, and they have strange ideas about MP3's and Online music distubution, and even how their stuff is used in advertising/gaming market... But the BAND lives on and will always THRIVE - I just hope Death Magnetic is everything it was promiced to be.....

What happened was a whole bunch of people got banned from Napster for having Metallica tunes in their Napster libraries. (my wife got nailed for having ONE song) If I remember right, it lasted less than a day before some hacker had a registry patch that "unbanned" you and let you create a new Napster account.
But it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths for millionaire rock stars to do something like that.
I can't speak for anyone else, but MP3s revitalized my interest in music. Until I started downloading MP3s, it had been years since I bought a CD. And I can't tell you how many artists benefited in the long run from my downloading their stuff - I'd never have bought their CDs for myself or as gifts for others if I hadn't discovered the artist in the first place by pirating them.
So yeah, it's kind of funny now for one of the first bands to gripe about MP3s offering something like that. Sure took 'em long enough to come around.

Screw you Lars - you can't even give this crap away for free now! Mind you- these are the same goons who went to battle with geffen - if you sign the contract...you must live up to it ( or in Metallica's case really horrible music and alienate most of their fans )

This is really old news. These are all live tracks. They started the vault when they released St. Anger in 2003. The original vault site required a key that came with St. Anger. Back in 2005 they closed the vault and started the LiveMetallica.com website. I'm amazed at some of the stuff that gets rep'd and thumbed up. They're still charging for the newer shows. If this was free studio album downloads, then I'd understand the hype.
THE METALLICAVAULT WEBSITE TO CLOSE
5/26/2005
We have some good news and bad news about the closure of The Metallicavault.com website.
First, the bad news:
We're sorry to announce that, effective on June 6, 2005, the Metallica Vault (www.metallicavault.com) will cease operation.
Since it started in June 2003 (with the release of "St. Anger"), the Vault has been a unique haven for us (as well as you) to offer live shows from throughout Metallica's history for download to anyone who had an access code (provided inside copies of the "St. Anger" CD). In that time, 18 shows were posted, and over 250,000 fans checked out the site and over 20 million free downloads flowed through cyberspace.
We opened the Vault in conjunction with our friends at Speakeasy, who were kind enough to provide the bandwidth and logistics. However, the expenses of hosting and maintaining the site for two years didn't quite add up to the returns they were hoping for - unfortunately the internet isn't free to those who make it possible.
Now the good news:
There will be an abbreviated version of the Vault that will live on through www.livemetallica.com in the form of monthly free downloads - each month we'll offer you a few songs that you may have seen there and some that you haven't. You will need to register again, but you won't need that pesky "key."
We'd like to thank everyone who supported the Vault during its run, Speakeasy, the labels (who let us post the shows without any hassles), and THE FANS, who not only supported the site by checking it out so much, but also helped by providing us with live shows from their own archives! You guys rule. But you knew that already.
We hope that you all agree with us that the Vault was a positive experience for everyone involved. As always, feel free to let us know what you think - we know you ain't shy!
So be sure to get all your downloading from http://www.metallicavault.com before the site closes on June 6th!

They've been offering these for years
They got into the Napster thing after they heard stations playing their unreleased stuff and wanted an explanation, they really didn't know that much about it, but went into it with a lawsuit, in past interviews they've said if they had known more about it they'd let it go. Meanwhile all the other artists like Dr Dre that jumped aboard don't get touched
And please, just because it's convenient for you. I wonder if any of you are in sales. You sure get kind of feisty if anyone jumps on your lead or customer. In other words, you have problem when someone messes with you and your living, talk about farking hypocrites, look in the mirror

Actually, they were upset that they didn't have control over whether their music was sold or given away, and under what circumstances. Them giving away MP3s is not inconsistent with their prior actions.

Well the fact that Lars would go to Hetfield's house and copy every album of Hetfield's while 20 years later saying:
LU: That’s what I was just saying. I think I just spent 10 minutes saying that that’s we’re trying to do. So you try and come up with basic sort of analogies and stuff like that people can understand. Bottom line is that for every 15 year old that sits there and thinks that it’s really exciting to do something in the privacy of their own which is potentially illegal – hopefully by the time they get to be 20 and 25 or they’ll understand that it’s not the right thing to do and that you try and appeal to people’s decency and sense of right and wrong, especially in terms of Metallica fans. If you want to be a Metallica fan, whether you agree with the position as a whole, if you want to be a Metallica fan and hang out and follow what we do then at least farkING respect what it is we’re trying to do. Y’know, find a way to correlate something between respecting our music, respecting what we do live, being a follower of the band and understand for better or worse, this is part of the ride at the moment. It shouldn’t really affect that much of your day to day life as a Metallica fan, because I presume that most hardcore Metallica fans don’t have a particular need to swap our copyrighted songs off our records. And as we’ve said a thousand times, there’s no issue with them swapping any live bootlegs or any kind of live recordings, or any kind of rare appearances.
gives me plenty of reason to ignore and disregard what Metallica, especially Lars Ulrich had to say on the matter.

After supporting them (legally) during their early years, I have not, and will not ever again do anything to support them in the future. No other group has done so much to harm their public as Metallica. They have no concerns about issues that do not line their pockets, and have no qualms about using their considerable power to squash the rights of you and I. They went far beyond simply seeking payment for their work; Instead they actively fought to expand the reach of copyright beyond anything that has ever occurred before, in any country or period of history. They did it by attacking their fan base, and undermining the values enshrined in the US constitution.
I suggest the "Deal" here, is akin to the indians selling Manhattan for trinkets. . .and we aren't the pilgrims this time. . .

OK so I won't pay for Metallica after that stink they made about file sharing. That really left a foul tune playing. Still, free is free and these are some good older songs. Does anyone know if this is DRM free? I just don't trust Metallica enough to take care of the fans. At least not like Trent Reznor who flat out said that his last album was on him and gave it away.

All the hate is crap.... Metallica was against it because a) tracks going out for "trading" (ie free) before the album even came out....
b) new artists get laid away in the early contracts and if they dont sell the music they lose their a**
This wasnt about them, it was about what is right...they have ALWAYS supported fans trading live shows.... they just felt that "trading" music via the internet was unfair to artists...it is a lot different to click something into your "waiting list" than to go over to your friends house and get a crappy tape copy of something.....
it sucks that this thread became pro/con Metallica.... but dont get it twisted when you talk about it

Like it or not... they ARE the Greatest Metal Band of all time.....
They are already MTV ICON
World Renound...
They have more fans outside the USA then in the USA...
They tend to tour outside the USA more then IN THE USA (lately)
They will still go multi platnium with ANY ALBUM they sell (even St anger sold 1.76 million in the USA only)
Metallica has sold over 100 million Albums, with 57mil in the USA.
THERE ISN'T A METAL BAND out there that can come close......
Though there are ROCKERS who have sold more records.. Metallica is the only HARD / Thrash Metal Band to sell on such a world wide scale..
