Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to the list of things to look into ;)
Don't forget though, that not all posts have something to do with a price or single product (think sales, coupons, etc), but can still be super sweet deals!

awesome, slickdeals is really going 2.0 now!
"Web 2.0" is a term used by idiots. EOD.
Anyway, I always knew SlickDeals would reign supreme over its main competitors simply because it was founded on a much stronger bulletin board system (vBulletin). Although, I personally would have gone with IPB, vB is certainly its equal or superior.
The wiki for each post will still be there, just instead of being a post by a user named "wikipost" it'll just magically appear there.
This was because wikipost was a spy (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=1709&t=750338), right?
One thing that was mentioned previously is if we can get an alert (dealalert) when new content is posted.
About once a day I glance at the FP to see what's going down. And it's easy to overlook the new content.

I am not sure if that's what you are looking for, but you can set the deal alert with "Front Page" rating level, and it will notify you any time new front page item is posted.

oh i can't wait to try it out!! good work!!
nice... changes look great!
Is it a public poll? What will stop people from abuse?
If people vote for "repost," and thread gets merged, the original thread should have some thumbs downs "cancelled" (iirc, the rating carries over)
-5/10 ? What is that? Can there be 145/10? Is the "rating" just the score? Because if so, then isn't that more confusing? Then again, when I look at "Public Opinion Area" I see the picture with 7/10 when there were a lot of TU/TDs (38 votes with net of 8). Does the consensus / number of votes/views affect the rating?
The percentages don't make sense, it's almost like they are competing against each other. "Okay, which one has a higher percentage...? Oh it's a tie, 50% say repost and 50% say other" I think they should be separated from the "good deal/not a good price"
It could be organized like this:
Good deal 50%
average price 37.5%
Not a good price 12.5%
Good product 25%
Not a good product 12.5%
Repost 62.5%
etc 0%
The first percentages can be calculated by the "thumbs up/no score/thumbs down" options. I say this because I'm noticing in the first picture that 0% say "good deal." Well, two people could have selected "the diamond," but that should reflect in the votes. 0% also say "not a good price." But then why are there thumbs downs? The sole purpose of TU/TD should be for "good deal/not a good deal" (yes, I know some people do it for other reasons, e.g. feelings towards the OP). If a person votes "thumbs down" because "I bought this TV and it broke after two days," they should be able to say "not a good deal" AND "not a good product"
Also, if people want to say "good deal but repost" or "good price but not a very good product," that should have the option to, they shouldn't have to feel like they have to give thumbs down just to give that input. The TU/TD/diamond should be for "overall score," the way I see it, it looks like you're encouraging TDs.
Overall, this is a nice system, but only if people actually use it. More often than not, people don't vote. I mean, in order to get a score of 3 thumbs up, which I think you guys have a deal alert set for, there needs to be just six votes. SIX. This site has so many thousands of visitors but so few people vote. Hopefully these changes are used by more people (people who are interested in the deal, at least), otherwise the changes will mean nothing
Easier said than done, eh? Sorry, was just my 2c.

don't have much to say about most of the post, hence the editing but, if it's a repost people should be MAing it anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I think, in general, your questions will be answered when the system rolls out :) Lots of your concerns are already addressed and are resolved :)
Remember the images are purely representative and do not actually relate the full functionality of the updates. For example, yes the percentages do add up to 100% but i took screenshots of our development system where we were messing around with it :)
Also for the sake of instruction, we'll of course also write up another post explaining all the details and functionality.
Some quick answers: -5/10 : it goes -10 to +10. Yes people's votes affect the rating. It is completely public just like voting is now, but of course there are limits to avoid abuse. Yes the percentages are to add up to 100% all the time, the picture is wrong because I was screwing around :)

Beeeauuuutifulll! Great job Mr BryantQ, great job.
So many terrific features coming. Glad I don't post at the Skinny Handbag place. :P
Great updates!
One thing that I'd love to see in the tech support sub forum (might be useful in other sub forums too) would be a basic rating system for posts to identify which post is most helpful to the OP's question. It helps identify good answers or helpful information rather than the dozen posts filled with unnecessary banter. Kind of like the "was this review helpful" links on Amazon.

Looks good.
As for thread feedback, like it especially it is optional and not force to provide it.
As for voting Results, the picture only show "Great deal" for thumb up?
Can we have another choice for thumb up like
- "Good deal but not slick" and/or "slightly better than average sale price" ?
- "Seems like a good deal but don't follow the price of this product" ? <--- this one is useful for those like to follow how other vote. :) Usually those deal that make front page, suddenly it got bunch of thumbs up. Even though the deal has been posted in the forum for more than 12 hours. Always wonder if people thumbs up just to say thanks or actually know the deal is good.
As for thumb down, people may thumb down to balance out the extra thumb up thinking the price is just average. Opposite also true.
For example, for Ralph Lauren Polo, you often see online sale price at $39 which you can get that price at places like Marshalls. The price is still the lowest you can get online but just average sale price. People may thumb down (to balance out thumb up other people gave thinking the deal just so so and shouldn't have this much thumbs up) or thumb up because they think the deal is at least ok and shouldn't have too much thumbs up/down. Again, thumbs up/down just to balance out the rating.
Can we have a thumb down option that said
- "average sale price" ?
or "thumbs up/down to balance the vote since this deal neither good nor bad"?
As for price of the deal, I think we need something to distinguish "Hot/Slick/great deal" from "slightly better than average sale price", "normal sale price", "not good price", etc.
It would be great if can rate the price by number like 1 to 5. 5 means Slickdeal and 3 means average sale price and 1 means horrible price. And we can see the number of people rate the deal 5 or rate it 3, etc.
In the case of RL polo, may be most people would rate it as 3 since this is just average sale price which mean the price is neither hot nor bad. Just average sale price. That is good information to know and you can't tell from the current thumbs up/down.
If I am not in a market for certain product (like the recent mechanical pencil deal), I may still get it if many people said it is " Slick deal". But if most of the thumbs up are just "slightly better than average sale price", then I may not want to get it.
The opposite also true. If I really need to buy a 22" LCD soon, even if people thumbs down because the price is normal sale price or slightly higher than normal sale price (in the case of rate price by number, then most people rate 3), I may still get it.
Just having two options of "Great deal" and "Not a good price" won't tell me that. Even the new Voting Results (show in the picture) doesn't seem to help.
It also help Mod related to moving deal to front page. Definitely can use the price rating as a check to see if that deal should really make front page. Front page deal should have mostly rating of "5" (assuming 5 means "slick deal") and "4". If the deal has price rating of mostly "4" and below, then probably just slightly better than average sale price and may not be front page material.
Also, if the price is not good AND the product is not good, can I select BOTH? It make sense to allow that since it probably happen often.
Any timeline for when these are going to be implemented?

Thanks for the info. I think at least Thumb up should be reason other than "Great deal" in hot deal forum. In additional to what mentioned (like people may thumb up to balance vote, thumb up to say thanks, etc) People may thumb up to say good information (like the deal is just ok but it has great info about unlocking cell phone, or tell people certain product is recalled, or warn people about certain things, etc).
I think at least should have "other reasons" for thumb up beside "Great deal". :)
Try reload.
CTRL+F5 worked for me.
I am using firefox and CTRL+F5 doesn't really do anything.
Just tried with IE version 7.0.5730.11 and can see BOLD but the Quote: is not inside any box while Firefox, quote is inside a white box.
update: yes, my firefox browser problem. I think I "Zoom out" too much that the font (inside quote) don't have bold. After I "zoom in" a bit, then I can see bold. False alarm. :) Probably caused by the font inside quote is one size smaller than before.

Well in reality, if people are voting up to balance it out they think its worth salvaging and a good deal.
I also think that people should not be giving a thumbs up as a thanks, they should rep for that.

May be, but if we don't give them a choice to provide the reason, we would never know if they thumb up to thanks, just to salvage an "ok deal" or for something else other than "great deal". :) Just a suggestion since people want to know why others thumb up just as much as why people thumb down.

Would it be possible to expand corner_y_y_br.gif to include the avatar? The avatars seem out of place, but maybe its just me.

Hi bryantq,
I have joined SD since Oct 2007. I like the old format a lot but I do welcome the new changes. I am still trying to get used to it.
I am having some problems with this new version. First, FYI, I am using IE 7.0 (with current version of flash player and JAVA) and Vista Premium (updated to date as of today). I have no problems below when using with Firefox but it does NOT have Adobe's Flash Player installed and/or JAVA is turned off.
1. Whenever I try to copy (highlight) certain text from the FIRST post (2nd post/reply and so on is fine), all text from that 1st post just disappears. I have no problem with Firefox. Chrome - no problem also.
2. What happens to my thumb up and down or the new Thread Feedback and Voting Results? It’s not even showing in my IE browser. I have no problem with Firefox. Chrome - no problem also.
The following is my personal opinion (don’t have to take it too seriously):
1. The font of the title of the post is way too big.
2. I was hoping you can still show the "join date" of the posters.
3. The user name, Posts #, and Reputation # should be as emphasized (bold & bigger font).
I think that's it for now.. if I am having additional problems, I will let you know.

Hi Bryantq :wave2: Since you are soliciting feedback, I'll jump in and give you mine.
I have to agree that the title font and the public option header in the first post both seem overly large.
Not to start a long debate on voting, but just to give you my first impression of the visual layout of the voting and results... I think that the display of those particular voting options (with the big block of red next to it if someone votes that way) gives off a negative impression. It's great deal, or then a slew of negative options.... Including repost, which I thought was not a valid reason to be thumbing down a post. Maybe a vote for that option does not calculate into the total, or is omitted in the calculation of the public opinion when merged? Just my opinion, but I think the list, which I notice before I even get to the deal details, emphasizes what discourages posting deals. Maybe it could be an expandable section, so that the deal is seen first, then the specifics of the voting if opened?
If we cannot opt out of the new view, my preference would be for the wiki post to be able to follow the color scheme the user selects, instead of being grayed out. Keeping the unique border color around the post would ensure it stands out, while still letting users choose the easiest background color for reading text.
Thanks for listening. :)

Here is a problem I am having. Is anyone else having this problem? When I revise a wiki post and click the submit button, all the rest of the posts on the page below the wiki disappear and I need to reload the page to get them back. I am using latest FF. It does the same thing on IE 6 as well.

I hate to complain but one thing I hate to do with any page is have to scroll and the new Huge header with all the non-essential stuff makes you have to scroll down to see each thread... this is a big inconvenience in my head.. All the stuff at the top of the page should be the most important stuff. I think you need an option to turn off huge header or something for those people who just like to read a thread and not see all the extra stuff.

This sucks ass. Unless you want people to stop voting for threads, stop making the reason box automatically pop up.
And stop making it autolink to a mod alert when you vote repost, that's annoying as hell.

Wow... this new layout sucks.
Keep the old post layout, which was much simpler; username / avatar on the side, post text on the left. And get rid of the "Vote breakdown," it's completely useless. Make the post title smaller (huge fonts look like shit), and make the borders around the "Community Wiki" smaller Also, get rid of the "Vote feedback" items with a 0% vote to reduce clutter.

AGHHHHHHHHH CHANGE IS BAD
make the bad layout go away!
so much goddamn wasted blank space
Geeze..you guys couldn't have made a bulletin in like all the forums when there's changes like you normally do? This totally freaked me out..CHANGE IT BACK!!?!?!
What the CR*P!! I don't know how to use the new Wiki!! I tried to try it out in this thread..but where's the button to edit it!! LOL!! Couldn't you just push the updates but keep the old layout!! come on...why not just make the site entire flash based while you're at it..these random updates are making me sick :vomit:

Kind of complicated!!! Should include logo of the website refered in the thread for quick read.
Also, it would be better if there is a time for this thread. Like if the deal is going on (status: NOW), if dead (DEAD), if the deal will effective in the future (better if there is a time counting backward)
Just some suggestions

While I agree that would be nice..there's way too much cr*p already stuffed in..it's like one of those Chinese PMPs that can do a billion and five things..but none of it is done WELL. That's how I feel about SD right now :vomit:

A few things we'll tweak:
1. The large fonts for the thread title.
2. The user sig & tags cluttering up the post content.
3. Maybe remove the 0% bars in the voting feed back drop down.

Removed the 0% bar graphs which should help with the negative tone on the feedback.
Repost votes do not affect the score but it will still be shown in the bar graph. People were using it to thumb down a deal because it was a repost even though they weren't supposed to. Previously, repost thumbs down would get added to the vote which affected the original post's score. By separating the repost votes, the votes can be tallied correctly when the deal gets merged.

Hey, Mr. Slickdeals, nice job.....but....it looks like the font is smaller not just in the title, but the text in the OP as well. I do appreciate all the hard work that went into, but no offense I liked it better the old way. Much easier to read.

Good stuff but I am having problems voting right now. Is anyone else having problems? I am using firefox 3.0. I only have a few add ons. I will list them as I do not believe they are blocking the voting. They did not in the past until this change. I am using Adblock Plus, hide unvisited (hide bookmarks), Old bar add in which uses firefox 2 style results, stop autoplay (BUT THIS ONE IS DISABLED) and RAMBack which allows you to clear internal firefox caches.
Any one have any suggestions? Can you pm me as well. Thank you in advance.

I logged in just now actually to mention that the new quoting seems tough to read on the mobile site. Maybe those things are unrelated (the new quoting for this main site vs how the mobile site looks), I'm not sure. But tonight when I was reading the mobile site the quoting looked to be running into the response text. You can only differentiate by the quoted text being just slightly larger, but it still seems difficult to me.
Maybe I need to figure out the mobile version of an F5? :glasses2:
Thanks for listening to our feedback.

Wow, IMO none of these changes are good. Everything is needlessly big (why not put everything in CAPS if it's size that matters?), there seems to be way too much empty/wasted space, and now I get fewer posts on each page. I see absolutely no benefit to these changes. Still love SD, of course, but this is simply an assault on the senses. Reminds me of the changes made a few months ago to the RottenTomatoes website for those familiar with that. Fugly.

frankly, i could have done away with everything in the new update. perhaps you could have rolled some of the new features gradually instead of making such dramatic changes at once, which i guess scares people.
i also liked the older quote graphics.

Why is it that sometimes the first posts show up in "invisible" text? I have to scroll over the post to read the text. Quite annoying.
I'm using IE as my browser, and system default settings... nothing fancy. Here's one of the threads where I can't read the OP without selecting the text: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?threadid=922626

Is there any way to make the text inside the qoute box larger? For me the text within the quote boxes is smaller and more squished together looking than the text in the rest of the posts.
Here's a screenshot of what I see.
118783
Don't know if you can see it well enough in the screenshot, but when I'm looking at a post with a quote in it, the quoted text appears to be about 1/4 or so smaller than the text in the rest of the post. And the letters seem to be closer together than the rest of the text, making it harder to read without either squinting or leaning in closer to the monitor. Can the quoted text please be the same size and font as the rest of the post? Please?
BTW, I'm running Windows XP and IE6 (yeah, I know :P) and I've also cleared cookies and cache.

I love the new features but I still can't believe Fatwallet or Slickdeals don't have a "search by total price" feature. Whoever does first will get a lot of traffic from people.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to the list of things to look into ;)
Don't forget though, that not all posts have something to do with a price or single product (think sales, coupons, etc), but can still be super sweet deals!
I too was wondering about something like this in the deal alerts, but figured it wouldn't be possible unless we were required to use some type of "form posting". And as you say, sometimes the deal is not about price.
It would be nice though. For example: I'm looking for a cheap, but decent digital camera. I have a deal alert set up for "digital camera". The problem is, I get alerted to $500 cameras for $200, while this is a good deal, it doesn't meet my criteria of cheap.
