Congrats to all who entered our 3rd annual pumpkin contest! It was difficult for us to pick a grand prize winner out of so many great pumpkins. In the end, buvwon's pumpkin edged ahead. It won the popular vote and it incorporated the SD logo.<br />

I kind of wished the winner was the huge pumpkin eating a smaller pumpkin...i thought that was creative and I surprised that not many voted for that one...maybe it was near the end?

It was not intended to bear any resemblance to Obama (or anyone else). As crazedpanda said, it was just supposed to be the Deal Zombie. The suit, which might be adding to the presidential feel for you, was because zombies are supposed to be risen from the dead and people are often buried in suits.

The overall concept was sort of a play on late night slickdeals browsing... getting to that zombie-like state.

why do you think that? Look closely, you can clearly tell he carved it. He used the carving technique where you dont cut all the way through the pumpkin giving it a much cleaner look.

I would have to disagree that it's not cut all the way through. If you look at the bottom of the pumpkin you can see where it's cut through. It looks clean because buvwon (sorry if it's spelled wrong :D) took the time to clean it up.

I would have to disagree that it's not cut all the way through. If you look at the bottom of the pumpkin you can see where it's cut through. It looks clean because buvwon (sorry if it's spelled wrong :D) took the time to clean it up.

Taylorspx is correct in that it's cut all the way through. Note the texture of the back wall of the pumpkin. I think also the small size of the image makes the carving look a little more clean in that it doesn't show the imperfections. Here's a link (http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sdpumpkinhd4.jpg) to the larger image that I sent to serra when I entered. You can see some of the jaggedness around the neck/tie and in the face. For me at least, unsmooth edges typically come from bisecting the poke holes as you carve. I will often try to stay just to the outside edge of the dots and then go back with a fine-toothed saw and clean it up where I didn't do a good job of it.

The color of the carved part, from my experience, gets more yellow as you increase exposure and more orange as you decrease it. In the photo with the Deal Zombie card, there were essentially three light sources. One was some backyard string lights, the second was votive candles placed inside the pumpkin, and the third was a small flashlight, diffused by my hand, that gave the Deal Zombie card a little more light to make it easier to read. Because I was trying to expose to show the pumpkin, there is relatively little light emitting from inside the pumpkin (I think 3 candles in this shot.. I played around with different numbers) and thus it appears toward the more underexposed orange side.

The tiny sliver that you reference is actually a toothpick. I thought about leaving a sliver of pumpkin above and below the center of the "d", but I decided the toothpick would get out of the way of the design more.
