 Welcome to the Market Basket Thread

We would like to thank misterchimpy (http://slickdeals.net/forums/member.php?u=151368) for starting the Market Basket grocery store thread and for helping those users get the best deals at Market Basket despite their lack of web presence. This has helped to save users in MA + NH a lot of $$$ at Market Basket and give them an idea for what deals to look for.

Thread Rules
1) Anyone can work in the wiki.
2) Disagreements are a part of life, discuss them civilly please.
3) If someone does something to offend you (me included), or mentions wrong coupon use, don't throw them under the bus in the thread. Public ridicule is uncool! Politely mention the correct way or PM the person and settle it there.
4) Minor OT is fine (and fun!), but let's not get too excessive.
5) Coupon requests and trades are fine with me as long as they follow SD guidelines.
6) If you have a blog and use any info from the wiki and/or thread, of if you procure info from another site and post it here, please give credit and thanks where credit and thanks is due.

A) Please see this post from misterchimpy (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=14504749&postcount=3) about a brief overview of what Market Basket is all about and their lack of web presence.

B) Please see this post for the history of them suing each other (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=32993537&postcount=862). :omg:

Ongoing Unadvertised Deals
Here's the place to add things that are just good deals. Please post the date you found the deal. If you notice that a deal has ended, please post that as a comment. Once confirmed, we'll remove it from the list.

rotisserie chicken 3.99 (regular price!)
MB American cheese (deli) 2.99/lb (regular price!)
Pepito Corn Tortillas(in refrigerated section) .99-$1 peelie=FREE

Remember: MB often has multi-week sales but only advertises them during one ad. So the sale may be for three weeks and advertised in the second week but not the first or second. This makes it appear the sale started early or ended late. Weekly sales are often turned on Saturday (or sale prices posted and thus honored) so don't be afraid to look for deals before or after you see them in the ad.

COUPON ALERT
Be on the look out in store for the following manufacturer and store coupons.

- Save $1 when you buy any two cans Lucky Leaf Pie Filling exp 12/31/11
-$1/2 Pillsbury items (any maybe) peelies, cake mix is 1.19

Coupon Policy
MB does not have an official coupon policy-or not one they are willing to admit to. The bare minimum we have figured out is that they:
do take insert coupons
do take printable coupons
do take coupons for free items
do take bogo coupons
do not accept expired coupons
do take a MB coupon and a manufacturer coupon for the same item unless excluded (please read fine print on coupons for exclusions)
do not give overage-coupons are redeemed for face value only
do need to know if the coupon needs adjusting-register will lock up if $1 coupon is scanned for .99 item and require manager override

Market Basket is a 50+ store grocery chain in MA + NH. Ihey don't double coupons, and don't have catalinas. But their regular prices are often a LOT lower than regular supermarkets(sometimes as much as 50 or 70 pct less), so if you aren't shopping for a specific deal, or don't have coupons for an item, you will almost always do better there, imo. And they are much better on produce, both in price and quality, then many other chains.

Unfortunately, they also don't appear to have any web presence at all. They briefly had a website in support of a store opening, but shut it down after a few months. More recently, someone started a 'fan site', mydemoulas.com, and posted the circulars there, but has updated it only sporadically. Otherwise, if you want an advance circular mailed to you(as per Getgreen09 and Wormbutt), you will need to go the service desk, and fill out a card to get on their mailing list(usually takes a few weeks to start).

As far as the Wiki, please feel free to post whatever you want, highlight specific deals, coupon matchups, in store tearpads, etc. Since most of MB's sales don't last more than a week, feel free to delete whatever doesn't seem relevant anymore.

That is great news on the IP coupons. I haven't tried using any there since I was shut down multiple times a few months ago. This is definitely the store that I do my every day shopping at. I use Shaws for the deals and get most things at Market Basket

I sometimes miss Market Basket too. They always had the lowest prices. The one thing I miss the most, and this will sound weird, is these jelly mints things they sell there, or sold there. They are white little candies with jelly in the inside.... yeah, that sounded weird. Will be near one this weekend, I may stop in just for kicks!

New ad is up, covers 2 weeks 12/14-12/27. There's another contest, Kraft, with 100 winners of $100 M-B gift cards. Since they don't have loyalty cards, and thus, no automatic entries, might be worth looking for the entry box.

I just found a Q for $1/2 Sargento shredded cheese 5 ounce or larger. That makes two bags for $.98!! Q was in 11/16 RP

Yeah I just saw that yesterday as well:mad: I thought that price seemed suspiciously low!

Next week's ad is up 1/4-1/10, nothing too exciting at first glance. I don't eat white bread, but .50/loaf seems like a pretty good deal. Also there are a number of Campbell's coupons in this week's Smart Source sunday insert.

Also, keep an eye out in the tortilla chip section(which is usually separate from the snack food--it's with the Mexican food). There are bags of a new product called Grande Tortilla Chips, they have peelies on them for a mail in rebate of the purchase price(they were $3).

Just went to MB and asked at the service desk and they have changed their policy and take internet q's now. Very excited! Thanks to this board, I never would have asked. I also got my free after rebate Grande tortilla chips... great find! The few other matchups I had were...
Marcal single roll for .67 and used the $1q that has been around.
Dragone mozzarella chunk was $2.99, same price as MB brand, and there is a $1/2 q from 10/5 and 12/14 inserts.
Celestial seasonings tea was $2.50 and used $1q from 10/5 SS (exp 1/4!)

Good luck all and happy new year!:bounce:

My flier for this coming week, 1/4, arrived and I did a quick look. The page of Campbells and v8 products reminded me that last night when I walked in to MB last night there were special Campbells booklets on the rack with the fliers. I flipped through it and it was loaded with coupons for these products. I don't use these, but thought someone would.

The only other match-up I see is Electrasol gelpacs are $3.99 and there is a $2.50q coming out sunday the 4th. There is a walgreens rebate this month, but if you have more than one q, this would be a good place to use it.

OT: Salem NH shoppers ... I just left a few coupons for Playtex Sport Tampons $1, expiring today 1/4/09 on the shelf with those tampons (look down, lol!) over at the Walgreens next to Market Basket on route 28 ... kinda across from Shaws. I hope someone can use it! They are $4 this week - $1 coupon from the easysaver book - $1 q = $2 a package.

I will be posting this over in the Market Basket thread too, since it's also a local chain. Probaby someone should post if they take them! lol!

(I am kinda a newbie here - I hope this post is ok! I hate for good coupons to go to waste!)

Last week I asked at the CS desk. So before I'd try with a cashier, I'd ask at the desk, then if they turn you away at the register, simply have them ask at the CS desk. Good call on the yogurts. Too bad my fridge is busting with gogurts from Shaws this week! LOL

No, I did my shopping yesterday and went back over my receipt and there were no amazing deals to note. I had a printable for $1.10/2 Old ElPaso which could get you some very cheap seasoning mixes. I needed refried beans though so got them. Made them about $.50-.60 a can. They didn't have any Marcal TP, so couldn't use that Q. My best score was some marked down produce, that's it!

YES!!!! :)

I just got back from my Market Basket, went up to Customer Service to confirm I could use the printed internet coupons. I used the printed Yoplait coupons (each has a unique serial code) to buy 6-packs of Yoplait Trix Yogurt. They are on sale for $2 each this week and the coupons were for $1.50 off!!

You can get those coupons here in the Wiki:

Nothing free that I got, but did notice a deal - the Airwick Luminaire is $4.99 and there were $5 MCs in a previous insert. Ben & Jerry's went up in price to $3.29, so had to pay for the two pints I got. No Marcal TP in my store either, though they had it last week. They do have Marcal Tissues, called fluffs or fluff outs or something like that for $1.09.

Every time I go down that aisle looking for the Marcal TP, I always look and I've never seen them carry tissues. Hmmm... Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing. Does the box actually say Marcal on it, or do you have to know that's the brand?

Nothing free that I got, but did notice a deal - the Airwick Luminaire is $4.99 and there were $5 MCs in a previous insert. Ben & Jerry's went up in price to $3.29, so had to pay for the two pints I got. No Marcal TP in my store either, though they had it last week. They do have Marcal Tissues, called fluffs or fluff outs or something like that for $1.09.

Intersting but I don't see it listed on Couponmom. Was it in one of those 'special/odd' inserts that are not listed there? Thanks.

NM. Found it. It is spelled differently there. So if anyone else is looking for the Q it is spelled Lumin Air and it is in the 12/7 S.

You have to look really closely to find the Marcal label on these. They are the smaller squarish size boxes and are $1.09 at the MB I shop at.

That's Market Basket for you! They haven't quite made it into the 21st century yet, have they? So retro, but they don't realize it and aren't trying to be.

Thanks for the flier! Planning my week shortly.

Here are a few matchups I saw... nothing spectacular unless you use the stuff anyway.

Sunsweet prunes, apricots etc. (page 2) $1/2 in 11/9 Smartsource
Arm&Hammer Essentials is $2 - $1 Q in 12/14 Smartsource, making it a buck.
Scotties tissues are $1.50 - there is a $1/5 Q in a bunch of RP inserts
Scotch Brite sponges 6 pack is $3.99 - $1 Q in the MarkBasket Winter Savings booklet
Hunt's canned Tomateos are $1 - $1/3 printable here (http://www.startmakingchoices.com/promotions/coupons.jsp?cookietest=true)

Not much, but maybe it will help someone. Stay warm!!

I'm intrigued by the "buy 4, save $4" on General mills and Nature Valley! Wonder where this special "coupon" will be, lol!

Okeeeyyyyy so Nature Valley is on some kind of special next week - small boxes (says "12" bars, but is really 6 packages of 2 slim bars) at $5/2 plus save $4 if you buy 4 ...

Well!!!! went yesterday and bought my usual package of "24" (really 12) and the price had gone up over 70 cents for the box!!! to $4.69 ... over the usual price - I buy it weekly - Hmf!! I gotta wonder if this is a "pre-sale" bump up??! I thought MB didn't do that!

If the price stays there, then my cheapest option (when there isn't a sale of some sort) on those will be Walmart ...

Yeah! That'd be great ... I am starting to think it'll be a manufacturer's coupon tho because I read a few supermarket threads and noticed this "$4" thing on these products in a few of them - and our beloved Market Basket doesn't do a lot of store coupons, ya know ..

Anyone else notice the rock bottom price on a gallon of milk? I know many diehards buy it at CVS with ecb, but I usually buy 4 a week, and that would wipe out my ecb. BJs finally dropped their milk price down to like $2.69 for skim compared to MB's $2.99. Starting Sunday it's $2.39! I'll go Sunday, and then the following Saturday!

psflanagan
01-30-2009, 05:11 PM
ooh ooh Now I have to run upstaitrs and look at my MB receipt ... BJs is too far for me to buy milk unfortunately. ..

OK, gallon of 1% is $2.89 ...

iwantitfree

I really do not think there is anyplace that regularly sells all types of milk for $2.39/gallon any more.

psflanagan
02-04-2009, 11:40 AM
Got me milk for $2.39 today ... love Market Basket!

BTW .. the General mills coupons (buy 4, get $4 off) are store coupons taped to a display on an end cap. I was talking to a cashier and she mentioned that they are marked to apply to the store where they are displayed with a very large number .. so you cannot use them in any Market Basket store . it has to come from their display. Just FYI -- thought that was interesting :) My manufacturer's coupon for Nature Valley did not scan, but I think it was due to my printer. The cashier was very nice and keyed it in for me.

THis is great news! I buy wholewheat pasta at Trader Joe's for $1.29 a lb. Was it a full lb in the box? I notice they are reducing the volume in some "designer" pastas so it is hard to figure out what the unit cost is. I'll check it out though!

No .. I just checked for you. It is 13.25 oz ... so at $1.19 that would be $1.43 a pound. Trader Joe's is too far away from me for anything but occasional trips, so this is a good option for us :)

No posts since February 4th? I check every now and again and nothing. I'm tried to find the online flier and they haven't posted it in a while. I think MB is just over all cheaper and they don't have to do crazy deals and wierd promotions which make things free.

Two things I got this week that were good for me... I used some $1 off q for the Marcal-Small Steps TP 4pack which was $1.19. $.19 for four rolls of TP I really need was a score. I'm hoping they start to carry the other sizes of Marcal as there was just a $2 q but for a larger size.

The MB brand whole wheat pasta was on sale for $1 a box, making it less per pound than the Trader Joes brand. That's about it... not very slick, but thought I'd post to see if anyone was out there!!

MB's deals all depends. If you have Hannaford in your area, I find them cheaper than Market Basket for quite a bit of things and about the same price for many more things. More particularly, I've seen Market Basket have very high health and beauty prices and I pay $1 less per item on everything I buy in this dept at Hannaford vs what I would pay at Market Basket. Of course, Market Basket has their deals too, such as their $3.99 rotisserie chickens. But I've found it all averages out in the end and there are many ways I find Hannaford better. I never have to wait 20 minutes plus in line to get out during peak days like the day before Thanksgiving at Hannaford, versus I always find Market Basket doesn't keep the lines moving as well as Hannaford in my area. Plus, the quality in bakery (I agree Market Basket is lower but Hannaford definitely has more and better selection), meat (same thing here too), deli (everything is always fresher at Hannaford), and produce (same thing here too) are all better.

Plus, Hannaford is all around a much cleaner store.

Sometimes I may go to Stop and Shop or Shaws for few item stops in which I know I will get a good price and many times you can find something in these stores for much lower than you would ever pay at Market Basket. Many times I do walk out of the store feeling like I got a great deal vs what I would pay at MB or Hannaford since I wouldn't pay like $.89 for a cucumber, which is what Shaws charges, when I know that same cucumber goes for $.59 at Hannaford and I want 6 of them. Plus, I know that these store are much less likely to have a huge line vs Market Basket because of self checkout and have what I am looking for in stock.

Wow! The Hannaford near me is waaaaaaaaay overpriced for no double coupons! Definitely more than Market Basket!!

I too am sorry not to see the thread more active, but fact is, I use MB more these days for the items I can't get deals on at the other local stores. I'd never buy health and beauty at MB or Hannaford with all the deals at WAGS, Rite Aid and CVS, unless it was a one-off emergency purchase.

love love love Market Basket!!!!

Total agreement with you on the health and beauty. I haven't been down that aisle in at least a year. I usually figure out my CVS, Wags and Shaw's runs for the week and then get everything else at MB. When you aren't sure... it's always cheaper at Market Basket!

I haven't gotten into MB yet this week, but here are some things I like.

MB Amercian Cheese $1.99/lb - this is the rock bottom sale for this. At this price I buy the whole 5lb brick and divide and freeze. This price hasn't been around in well over a year, but about 6 weeks ago it was back. I'm well-stocked, but thought I'd list it anyway.

Foxy romaine hearts for $1.50
Cottonelle 24pk for $4.99 plus a Q... hope they aren't out of stock!
Frozen Fish Fillets for $3.99/lb - I get haddock and more expensive fish when it is at this price.
MB hotdog rolls $.99 for 8. Just spent $1 at shaws this week, but want to get some in the freezer.
MB grape jelly for $.99 - that's my stock up price.
green beans for $.89
baby carrots for $.99/lb

It seems a lot of people are running low on TP, myself included, since there hasn't been a great sale on it recently so to me this one is pretty good, not the best I've ever seen but still a good deal especially if you like cottonelle and thats our preferred brand.

I did my run for the week today. A few things worth mentioning.

-SmartBalance spread and sticks are on sale for $2.50 and there were Qs recentlyl for buy a spread get a free pound of sticks. $2.50 is a great price for 'healthy' margarine.

-Old El Paso Enchilada sauce, the big 19 oz can is $1.99! If you make enchiladas this is a great price. The large can is usually $3 or more. In fact, I had fun showing my kids that the large can was $1.99 and the smaller can was $2.49. I wish I had some coupons. Still bought 5.

- Whole pork loin is on sale, but the half loins were the same sale price so I happily got a 6 lb one and cut it into 3 meals.

- 2 lb strawberries for $3.29

Nothing else that knocked my socks off this week!

$1.99 MB deli american cheese - again! This has been on sale every other week or so for the last month. I hope when I get low they are still pushing it.
$1.19 Jennie-O Turkey Breast. My kids were just asking why we don't have turkey more often. I'll have to find a cool day and put the oven on!
$.99 Pepito whole wheat tortillas, we fly through these so I'll freeze a few.
$2.50 Egg Beaters - there were some $1 printables for these not too long ago, but I used them for the Shaw's conagra deal. Not sure if you can still find them.

$2.50 Tostitos Scoops and Salsa - there was a tearpad for a free salsa with bag of chips. Think it was as recent as this week!

Anyone else finding anything good this week?

Thanks for posting! I should get my flier in tonight's mail. I'll prolly pick up some chicken this week too -- I use the market basket egg whites or generic egg beaters in baking every week, and the big container is $3.49 at Market Basket, which is the equivalent of two of the eggbeaters cartons, so:

2 x $2.50 sale price on eggbeaters
- (2) $1/1 printable IPS
------------------------------------------
$3 for two eggbeaters

so, for me, only difference of 49 cents .. I may just hold onto my internet printables hoping there'll be another good sale or deal at either Shaws or Stop and Shop ...

Just thought I'd share my calculations, since I do use this product ..

Dunkin Donuts coffee is $4.99 a bag and there was a $1.50 off two bags a few weeks back and also a $1 off 2 bags in the market basket coupon book.

Hillshire kielbasa is $2.29 $1 on 2 makes them 1.79 each

Philadelphia soft cream cheese tub 2/$3. I found tp at market basket a few weeks back for .55 off 1.

Pepperidge farm cinnmaon swirl bread was 2/$4 yesterday, but don't see it in the flyer so not sure if they were just left from last week, but $1 off 2 mc makes for some yummy cheap bread.

Also some other items on my list...we like the thin & trim deli turkey and its 4.99/lb this week! sweet potatos 2lb for $1 and brocoli .99/lb

one more thing I found the tp yesterday for "free salsa one 15 1/2o jar, any variety when you buy any two bags tostitos and/or ruffles. I think this could be combined with the $1 off tostitos and dip to make for 2 bags of chip and a salsa for $4 which I think is a good deal! HTH!

[QUOTE=iwantitfree;19167619]

I believe you are right too about there being one out from a couple weeks ago, $1 on 2 spreads. Also just found their website has a bunch here http://smartbalance.coupons.smartsource.com/Web/index.aspx?Link=OLEYKA3GOJASY

Also I really hope this thread keeps up, I too shop MB for items I don't get at Shaws. My problem is I don't get to see their flyers much ahead of shopping anymore now that they took their site down. Does anyone know if they will mail flyers?

When you say flyer, do you mean the weekly ad? The circular? If so, then yes! They definitely will mail you one, you can sign up to receive them at Customer Service. (I signed up and then had to cancel when I realized we'd been getting them in the mail with all of our other circulars and my hubs was recycling them before I could see them!) HTH!

- Geraniums, 4.5 inch pot - 2/$3

I hope no one minds, but I added McNoob's finds and mine for this week (from above and a few others) to the WIKI. I am spoiled with the awesome Shaws thread and love the super organized and updated WIKI there. If this thread continues to be more active, I hope we can keep up with the WIKI as well each week.

:shocking: i get wic and i don't know what to do with all the ones i have..

My family likes omelettes, egg "mcmuffin" sandwiches, etc and I like cheap protein, lol! Just made a yummy casserole for a potluck, cost me all of $5 for a 13x9 lasagna pan (12 servings?) of it if u shop at MB with coupons:

Spinach Casserole a la mexican

3 boxes frozen spinach (10 oz) .89 a pack at MB
10 eggs 82 cents
8T parmesan cheese
spices: garlic powder, pepper, salt
Jar of Pace Salsa (free after coupon from win at pace.com)
Slices of American cheese - or shredded cheddar $1

Preheat oven to 350. Grease a glass 13x9 pan.

Microwave the spinach until cooked (about 20 min). Allow to cool and squeeze out the excess water. Beat the eggs in a bowl and add the parmesan cheese. Mix in the spinach and pour into the glass casserole dish.

Bake until firm - 30-40 minutes. Spread with the Pace Salsa, Top with cheese slices or shreds and cook an additional 15 minutes. Allow to cool for 5 minutes or so before cutting :)

You could also add a layer of cream cheese before the salsa ...

If you look near the Corona beer displays in Market Basket they have yellow square coupon booklets. There are coupons in those booklets for $1/2 old el paso products. I have seen them in every market basket I have been in the past 2 weeks. Other coupons in there as well including. .75 of Tabasco sauce which doubles at shaws and makes it free

Yeah, a lot of MB's prices lately overall have been in line with what is Hannaford is charging. And the sale prices are always better over at Shaws or Stop and Shop if you like cherry picking; plus don't forget about double q's. As matter of fact, I'll come out and say that the $5 off $50 coupon plus free barbeque sauce that Hannaford currently has out makes it a cheaper store. Otherwise, it is no worse than 5% more expensive; which is consistent with what the pricing studies say. MB and Walmart are the cheapest and the difference is too close to call. Hannaford is 5% more expensive; but even if it is; and I definitely have seen them getting more competitive now and this is when they were less competitive; so now I have to say the difference is too close to call among Hannaford, Walmart, and MB. If all that fails, Consumer Reports does say Costco and Sams Club is cheaper than MB; though they say that MB is still a better deal than BJs. They haven't come out with anything yet on Trader Joes vs everyone else.

12 ounce mushrooms is expensive for a sale at $1.99; I've seen sales at Hannaford going as low as $.99; sometimes $1.29. I believe that may even be the regular price at Hannaford. So these days, MB isn't as much of a deal as people say it is, and it is no longer worth it to stand in their ridiculously long lines (as deli waits easily can get to 20 mins and average checkout wait I have had is 10 mins; other stores are definitely somewhere less than half that. Also, don't forget many fresh products do seem to go bad much sooner than elsewhere.

And for another one, Trader Joes still beats MB in a lot of stuff with the only exception being some perishable items (like milk, deli meats, and a few produce items). Like you can get a bag of pirates booty TWICE the size at the same price vs what is MB charging for their sale price. The only difference is that it is TJs brand; same taste otherwise. As for Tostitos at $2 (though I must admit it is a good deal vs everywhere else& only other time I have seen it cheaper is when CVS offers extrabucks with the purchase like on their Superbowl deal), Trader Joes regular price on even their organic tortilla chips is still a better deal.

So yeah, I think if you like MB for prices, you'll like Trader Joes even more because you'd get the cheap prices plus better quality. One thing that I never can get with a normal grocery store is why you need 3 different sizes of boxes of Cheerios, Corn Flakes, etc plus another 1-2 sizes on store brand. 1 is enough for me :)

Its from the Checkbook magazine that Consumer Reports publishes for the Boston area. Though, I should say you can't take everything in that study at face value since they said that a store called Atlantic Food Mart (it was in Reading but it closed and it was closed when it got published so you know at least this study goes back to November 2008) is the same price as Hannaford (in reality Atlantic Food Mart's prices were way much more than Hannaford since they were just a single independent store) and so you can think about what has happened since then.

The only thing that would help you a little bit about finding a store in SoCal that they published ratings on a national scale. It would at least give you a rough idea of what's good. At least I heard Trader Joes has a lot of locations in California so that may be your best choice in terms of overall price and maybe quality (I have an uncle that does almost his whole weekly food shopping there). Many areas TJs is the lowest vs the next cheapest conventional store. I even visited TJs in New York City; the line wraps around the whole store and they don't take advantage of those people and raise prices.

I know this is the MB thread but since we always look out for each other about finding the best deals I wanted to let you know that for those of you with a big Y nearby they are TRIPLING UNLIMITED coupons next week up to $1.

Does anyone know if Market Basket will accept internet coupons? I have some purina cat food coupons & MB has the best price so I'd like to use the coupons there for a super deal.

They will accept internet coupons. The only problem I had was at one of the MBs with coupon for more than the item price which they refused to take - but otherwise no problem at all!

hth!

Hey Jason!

I think I know you from MC .. I'm Flanagan over there ... also from MA.

Not sure on the price of the raviolis, but I noticed last week that Mama Rosie's has come up with a pretty cheap frozen whole wheat ravioli - fairly cheap, and cme to find out my girls and dh actually like it better than the regular Mama Rosie's. I'm stoked, lol! I know not everyone is interested in the whole wheat products, but thought I'd mention it :D

What I say is if you have the brains, you can do better on a lot of stuff elsewhere.

If you have the brains... and the time.

I have two little kids and so even though there are better deals to be had, if I can get something for a decent price at MB and it saves me having to make another trip out, I'll get it. It may not be the slickest deal, but sometimes that's life!

Thanks for the info on the prices, I do appreciate it (even if I can't always take advantage!) :)

MB has been good but not shockingly low lately. What I say is if you have the brains, you can do better on a lot of stuff elsewhere.

Wow. I totally agree with the other poster who commented on this quote... sometimes with life the way it is, going to MB when you know overall you will pay a few cents less on all your groceries is just a whole lot easier than figuring catalinas, shelf price, sale price, spend $25, deduct Qs, add store Q with mfrQ, competitor Q, price matching... If I don't have the time, energy or good coupons, I want to know I can go to MB and get what I need. That's what this thread is all about I think. Today I went to Shaw's, rolled my cat and cherry picked the deals, and then went to MB and got everything else.

Hear hear for Market Basket! I'm sick of the people who bash it. If you don't like it, shop somewhere else. it's that simple. No need to tell someone they have no brains for shopping there. :shake:

Kinda rude.

A lot of don't get the coupons others get and perhaps don't buy then too? Market Basket is a solid place to buy groceries without the terrible mark-ups you see at Shaw's and other stores. There are a lot of people who slam Market Basket and say it's "dirty" or they take Shaw's seconds etc. While the stores are not the modern, flashy icons that Shaw's and Stop&Shop are, I'd much rather see lower prices than a pretty store.

Yes, you can do better at Shaw's. Absoltely. There are a lot if us who do. But, I stick to my list at Shaw's. When I need something that's not on sale --- I'm not picking it up at Shaw's, that's for sure.

Can someone tell me how the Wiki gets edited? Are we all allowed to edit it? Are there rules? Do you just erase old info when you put up the new?

I noticed some things were in the posts but not listed in the Wiki. I don't have my flyer yet, so I was checking the Wiki and that's when I realized.

Lisa I think anyone can add to the Wiki .. as far as erasing .. not so sure!

I was at MB today and bummer ... they didn't have the 12-pks of diet orange soda I buy for $2.50 (so dh won't spend $1 a can at the office). so, I had to make do with the name brand sodas and happy day! 12 pks of Diet Sunkist and the other Dr. Pepper brands were all on sale (unadvertised??) 4/$12. Not too bad, so I went to pick one up and they all had peelies for $1/ 12 pk ... so in the end I paid $2, yay! Thought I'd pop in and mention it!

I love Market Basket! Love it! Yah when there are deals to be had, I shop Shaws, Hannaford, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, or Stop and Shop, but I shop Market Basket faithfully for all those items with outrageous markups at the other stores. I'm another one sick of the Market Basket bashers!! :)

YES! Please feel free to update the wiki, that's why it's there! There's a little link near the top right that says "Edit Content" and if you click there you can add your finds. Please do, I will appreciate it and I'm sure others will, too.

I'm wary of deleting, too, but maybe the 2 week old list is safe to go? I do notice at my local MB (Salem, MA, the dumpiest MB ever!) the sales don't always go *exactly* by the dates they advertise... so maybe it's smart to leave at least the previous week's deals up, just in case?

(ps i finally figured out how to multi-quote! woohoo!)

I can switch it back if need be.

Thanks for posting. Just returned home from 8 days vacation so behind on info.

Never see Avacados for less than 99c so that's a good price.

Can report that their Haddock Scrod is the best price around. The fish in the store near me is very fresh and good. YMMV of course.

I saw on the S&S thread that there is a printable for the LOL cheese ($1 on a 1/2 lb) which makes it an excellent deal IMO.

Gatorade is $1 and there was a display for a tearpad coupon for a mfr rebate of $5 when you buy 10 AND 5 bottles of Propel (not sure of price). Not as slick as I had originally thought because of having to by the Propel as well.

Lays 12 pack snack chips are on sale for 2/$5 and there is a tearpad coupon for $1 off 2

Did anyone see the new ad that'll be good for 2 weeks? It states there's an in store coupon for $3 when you buy 3 Kraft products. Well, there are many Kraft products advertised for $1 or less including Stove Top and Jello (5/$3). Do you think it's possible we could at least get free Stove Top with this coupon? I'm looking forward to checking it out Sunday!

Thanks

Yes, MB is actually worth going to next week after burning through $24.50 in cats at Shaws from last week on Steelhead Trout at $6.99 and some NY steak that I could very well get at $4.99 at Hannaford or possibly MB (usually after getting what I want to at Trader Joe's and then going to Shaw's for cat deals and Hannaford for convenience grocery store items. Be interesting if this is a coupon that you take to the register to get $3 off instantly. If so, would be a very great MM to take to Shaws if they come out with a Kraft cat deal as we are due for one over there in the next week or two I believe, but I'm just speculating.

I'll have to walk around the store more! I go to the one in Chelsea and it's huge and I honestly still don't know where everything is.

The 2 I used beeped too but the cashier didn't seem to have any problem entering it manually once she read the coupon and saw our 6 items.

Today I bought 3 Jell-O vanilla instant puddings (I use them in my chocolate chip cookie recipe to make soft cookies), 2 Stove Top stuffings & 1 bag of Baker's chocolate chunks along with a few other items I needed. The coupons didn't beep but the cashier made sure I had all 6 items before entering them. I'll be picking up some more items later in the week; the store is on my way to work & it won't hurt to leave the items in my truck for a few hours. :)

Okay, after reading all the posts about beeping I'm thinking maybe my cashier just entered it manually while I was chatting & that's why I didn't hear the beep.

I bought 7 jellos and 2 stove top... The coupons are coded 21000, so they will beep, regardless they will beep for intervention... But I used 3 on 9 products, and the FEM had ring them up 'manually'.

No problem. I had overage from those, and used it for the rest of the products... even rolls would be a few stove top and a jello (or close to it), or a couple jello and a capri sun, based on PSP's....

Easy stock up for jello though :)

Hannaford has a better deal on turkeys. $.40 a pound for the frozen Marval turkeys and Marval turkeys have actually been rated the best turkeys out there despite selling at the lowest price of them all, and you can't taste the difference. MB is very unlikely to come down on that price, as the current sale runs for two weeks. I'm probably going to go to MB just to run the Kraft deal, and then go to Hannaford for everything else plus of course my usual TJs runs because Hannaford's current sale is quite excellent ($1.99 for Apple Pie! And I think its $2.99 at MB) and its pretty slow at Shaws through Thanksgiving. Plus, I've got a lot of cans to redeem since I've been shopping at Shaws too much. All the cans slide in at Hannafords well (and they take them over the window too) and I tend to have problems with the machines at MB, but I shop Shaws in NH; MB it varies; and Hannaford in MA.

My dad is quite the nit-picker and wants a BB for his turkey. We're not as picky and I've been looking at the ones at Hannaford or even WM (also .40/lb if you can catch them) but will probably decide based on whats available the day we buy a turkey. I don't always shop at MB so I can't recall if they have done better deals. Last couple years we've gotten a good deal on a fresh turkey right near turkey day.

How do you get overage at MB ? My store never does overage, they mark the coupon down to what the price is. I had a $2 off any small steps TP and the only kind mine carries is 89 cents so they used the coupon for that amount.

overage at MB? Well...

They manually had to enter my $3/3 coupons, since i bought NOTHING with the 21000 category (it was all jello/stove top). Kraft cant put ALL the products on it...

Regardless, the FEM just said to the cashier 'I dont know why they arent working... just ring them in manually' and the cashier put in $3 coupon 3 times... So, the products cost me $5.50 (or so) maybe $6... 2 stuffings rang up diff prices, and I think they were 'turkey' and 'sage' for the 2.

Usually, MB charges more on their turkeys than elsewhere when it comes to Thanksgiving sales, with the exception of what I saw at Walmart. There's always someone that undercuts MB by about $.10 a pound; sometimes $.20 as I remember MB charging $.59 for turkeys while Shaws was charging $.39 years ago; $.10 or $.20 a pound may not be much, but it adds up when you think about a 15 pound turkey. IDK about Butterball though, but its all the same to me. I tried to buy a turkey at Walmart last year since I had a promotion on my credit card to get $40 statement credit after making 2 $40 purchases at Walmart and it was at Thanksgiving time. WM wanted $.84 a pound in Salem NH for frozen  (fresh was about $1.17 a pound if I recall) and they had signs up saying they would match any local competitor's turkey price. Though, I did not have an ad so I passed that up and ended up buying other thiangs.

Also, I find MB quite expensive on cleaning stuff and HBC, but I guess that's good that we have competition since it keeps all the stores on their toes. Speaking of that, competition is why MB is motivated to clean up their stores, like the one in Hudson NH that was cleaned up right after Stop and Shop in Hudson NH opened up next door so they could compete better. The one on Fletcher St. in Lowell tends to be dumpy since its a 10 minute ride to the next closest competitor, which is Hannaford, even though its about 9 or 10 years old now.

Decided to at least try 1 round of the Kraft deal today. The FEM was very rude about it and didn't like I was getting a Wheat Thins and 2 jellos for free and was very hesitant to scan the coupon. He did not let me get the reduced fat Wheat Thins since its only a 9 oz box; said it has to be a 10 oz box (though I did not look at the coupon). He said at first the jellos were fine. So I switched it for regular Wheat Thins and he did not like that the jellos are so cheap for this deal. He finally wasn't hesitant anymore when I said that I do deals like this at Shaws all the time and I never have a problem. So he then immediately scanned the coupon and then said its the cashier's fault if she gets in trouble (like it how the attitude of MB changes positively so fast when they know there's competition).

OMG, so much trouble. I was in the store a good 20 minutes just doing this deal once, and what I got is going to the food pantry since I don't need the extra calories of regular Wheat Thins. But if I have to buy 9 more regular wheat thins along with buying 2 jellos for each wheat thins, I'd say its worth it since I'd donate them and submit it for the $10 Kraft rebate. I'll try a different MB on another day, and see how that works.

The free small steps should not give overage and the $2 coupon isn't for the single rolls the free coupon is for. I don't know about you but overage is not a right unless you shop at the commissary....free is enough for me.

I have had huge issues using NWPN WTs in Portsmouth, NH. Despite it saying one per customer the FEM tried to tell me I couldn't use one on a bag of chicken to make it $3 a year ago because "some lady came in and used so many she was going to get a free cart of groceries"...I told him they would be reimbursed and if they let her use more than one instead of restricting based on the small print thats his fault not mine. I was using one for chicken on chicken. Sometimes I think they just aren't used to seeing coupons or at least not significant savings.

I figure on getting mostly jello (the alcohol flavors look tempting) and stuffing. Ran out of time today after work. Stupid holiday season...

Those Kraft tear pads are hard to find! The ones near the front and first aisle were wiped out. Further in the middle of the store I found others. Only took 4. Used two. They don't expire until Jan 15th I think. Wanted to note that the Market Basket logo is on the back of the coupon. I thought I saw someone mention they took this coupon to another store.

Anyway, I got

3x Stovetop $.99 - $2.97
2x Baker Chocolate $2 - $4
1x Wheat Thin - $2.50

$9.47 -$6 = $3.47
Great deal for me as I need the chocolate for Christmas candies I make. Cashier matched the products up to coupon and put them through once she saw I got the right amount. No troubles. Though I wouldn't be confident to go for 3 jello or 3 stove top. Just me.

The Marcal napkins that had the free coupon were wiped out.

As far as the turkey discussion... Shaws and Stop & Shop undercut their turkeys with promotions to get you in to buy everything else there. MB doesn't traditionally do that since their philosophy is every day low prices. I got a $.49 Jennio frozen turkey there last week. I just don't want to deal with the threshold sales at Shaws where I have to spend $25 to get the promo price. That annoys me.

Yeah, it isn't worth taking the coupon to another store right now, but there will probably be cat deals soon enough at Shaws and/or Stop and Shop in which it then would be worth it. Also, another idea is that Stop and Shop and I think Shaws has Shady Brook Farms and I thought I saw $2 of turkey coupons somewhere for that, but I don't remember. May be worth going there if you can find a coupon, but otherwise, I think the coupon just takes the price down to slightly below what you'd get the same size at Hannaford. I have to agree with that the grocery stores try to undercut each other to get people in their doors, but I may actually go to Shaws next week as I have 4 Jones Sausage buy 1 get 1 free coupons and it is now buy 1 get 1 free there, so free sausage to use for stuffing; probably use 2 for thanksgiving, 2 for christmas, and save the other 4 for some other time since that's the only brand my house uses and that's a significant savings.

The stove top listed in the add is chicken, low sodium chicken and turkey. So other flavors might be more.

I won't be buying a bird at Shaws. No free turkey promo and $25 threshold for the .47/lb is ridiculous. Hannaford has theirs at .40/lb with no purchase requirement minus the bird. No point in spending another $25 just to pay more for a turkey as well. Sometimes I wonder if they just aren't getting it, lol.

It could be just like last year in which they said it in their ad, but they offered $.47 a pound regardless. I bought at Shaws last year even though I only purchased $16 on the sale I did the turkey ($6 for the turkey and $10 for a few other things) and I got the $.47 a pound. But yes, I'll probably buy 1 at Hannaford this year.

Thought we were talking about this one, actually:

In other MB news....

I did this transaction tonight:

6 Jello
1 A1 Sauce
2 Bakers chunks
1 pkg. sandwich steak ($1.56)
Used 3 $3/3 coupons and 1 $1/1 beef wyb A1 sauce. Paid $.56 for all. Needed the A1 so was quite happy with that transaction.

There was a coupon, I think this sunday, that was for free Marcal Napkins up to $2.50.
Then there is a $1/Free coupon. Basically a $1 off a Marcal product. You can use it on the $.79 single roll, or the $.89 small roll 4 pack.

Good sale, but this is what I don't like about MB; everyone is clueless about these types of deals and they keep the extra savings at the FEM, so I'm always clogging up the express line the time a FEM gets to the register and retrieves one and then makes sure he is confident my items are OK even though the sale has been running for a few days (which is my experience from the Kraft deal). Sale looks just as good at Shaw's so I think I'll do that since I need nothing at MB, and I'll be there for Progresso.

Gotta :S the talk MB employees give about their bonuses this time of year. At times, I feel a little sorry for them because they think they get treated like gold, but really they treat their employees worse (best case just as bad as) than Walmart from what I've talked about with my neighbor. The bonus, at best, makes up for the less they get paid since I know MB pays anywhere $.50-$2.00 less an hour vs Hannaford and Walmart, depending on how long they've been with the company, and employees having worked less than a year do not get a bonus. At least I have to say there are even worse employers out there. As far as I know, the only retail stores that go out of their way for employees are Costco and Trader Joe's.

If you still have the $5 coupon that was mailed several months ago this is a great deal! Got a turkey for Thanksgiving for $1.50!

I asked for the Kraft coupons at the MB in Portsmouth by Shaws today. It was the same red vested (manager?) that is always rude/very vocal. He said, "Over. It's DONE" really loud and walked away. Geesh, manners would be nice. I am polite about asking.

I had the exact opposite experience at the MB in Chelsea, MA. Last week I was looking for that Baking Joy spray since there was a $1 coupon in their coupon book. Since I looked up and down all the aisles I thought it might be in at least twice and still couldn't find it I finally asked someone. After he couldn't find it he contacted someone who then contacted someone. I had 3 people looking for baking spray and then they explained what happened, why it wasn't on the shelf, apologized and ordered 20 cases for themselves! I was extremely impressed, that store is super busy and it must drive them crazy at times but they still really care, at least it looked that way to me! Sorry for your bad experience!

I get the same bad experiences at Westford, DWH in Nashua, all in Lowell, Salem NH, and Tewksbury as was mentioned in Portsmouth. It takes too much time to do certain things, or there is quite a bit of rude people in there, at least moreso than what you'd otherwise find.

Again, MB tends to focus on providing good service at the new or remodeled stores (of course, Chelsea is a newly opened store) and then after 6 months- year, they spiral down steadily to their old selves again. The one in Lowell on Fletcher St used to be good back in 2000, and now its forget about it and I pass it right up and will go out of my way to go to Hannaford, because the other two in Lowell aren't good either, but they are remodeling one in Lowell, so let's see what happens with that.

And so many people complain about Walmart-- and I think Walmart even has better service (in Hudson NH compared to area MBs), and from what I've heard from talking to people, Walmart treats their employees better than Market Basket. One of my neighbors has worked for Market Basket for 6 years and all he gets is $9.00 an hour. I've also heard Walmart gives people out at $8.80 an hour as a starting wage, plus there's an employee discount on most items, no employee discount at Market Basket.

I've never had any bad experiences at the Rochester MB. Any time I've needed help finding an item the person I asked cheerfully pointed me in the right direction or found the item for me.

I too have only had positive experiences at MB, including stores that were labeled above with "bad service". I have had butchers, produce employees, managers and others go out of their way to assist me with special requests. MB will always be my faithful back up and standby with all around low prices when I don't have the time to run the deals at the other stores with their cats and store cards and the rest.

I've actually gotten a little concerned that in the last 4-5 months MB has started advertising a low price "with coupon found in store". As we all know, the coupons may run out, taken by S and G's, get misplaced. I'm afraid they may be getting a little too gimmicky, like all the other stores.

Good point, and I find its much easier and more rewarding to take advantage of an advertised cat deal from Shaws or little less so Stop and Shop than a MB coupon deal. I find MB the most hassle to shop right now because it seems like I always have to wait for a coupon at the reigster, plus the fact they can't keep up with their volume on holidays so lines are usually ridiculous then (which I wouldn't dare go near that store on a holiday). The Kraft deal takes $3 off 3 products, and I have only been able to do 1 per transaction at the stores I've visited since the FEM keeps the coupons to make sure that happens. Usually, its just $1 per item reward and no more than 5 items for $5 with that turkey discount deal. Compare that with a cat deal in which you can get anywhere from $5-$45 back.

I like Hannaford the most because they are more forthright with any coupons they put out, since they are usually either mailed or at some event. The buy 4, get $1 store brand promotion was well-publicized and I didn't have to hunt for anything like I do at MB-- I simply got the cat after the transaction.

I think its consistently that price although I think that comment would pertain to the sale ending this saturday. I see the coupons for it on and off at MB. If not Walmart is certainly close or cheaper last I looked. I have a couple of those coupons hanging around for picking some up for when I make crepes. :yummy:
