what's the difference between an FM Transmitter and Traffic? my DH wants one that can tell him the traffic? Is that what the FM Transmitter on the GPS does?

the fm transmitter allows the sounds from the gps to be heard through the sound system in the car. The downside to that is the radio can not be used for anything else while using this feature

A couple of the features of the 750 I like is the ability to map out then save up to 10 routes. It also has a larger screen.

Nokia N500 --- it was a pre-BF deal though :D

Seriously --- if buy.com brings it back for a BF deal at that price, I'd strongly consider it -- 4.3" touchscreen, TTS, FM transmitter, bluetooth (works flawlessly) for $100

Gander Mntn. and Office Depot have the Garmin 255w for $199

Does the 750 have Bluetooth?, Garmin.com says it doesn't.

Also what is the biggest difference between the 255w and 750

Vamos!
11-22-2008, 05:24 PM
I will never understand Garmin's strategy behind numbering their GPS models. Shouldn't 750 a lot better than 255? I mean, what would you pick between 750i and 328i given that they are the same price? Would there even be a discussion on which is a better deal?

I'm looking for a deal on the Tom Tom 3rd edition...I know, last years model, but we have one and we'd really like another. I got it last year at Staples for around $100 after coupons, that price would be great to find again!

Yeah, the saving the routes is an awesome feature, but we don't like the widescreen versions. They aren't that bad, but they're bigger and compact is the way to go these days-especially with airlines cutting down on using space. We need every ounce of space we can get.

We went to Amazon today and picked up the Garmin 265T with bluetooth and lifetime traffic for $235. A few other no name spots had it for about $220, but we went with Amazon for peace of mind and lifetime traffic built in. We'll probably pick up a 3 year square trade warranty for about $15 to seal the deal. One less hassle on BF. I'm excited. :)

There are a zillion gps's out there. which one is the best? i know there are alot of different features, but i think the best feature is the search feature. I had a mio 320- (i think), and i can enter in a store name and it will show me where and the telephone number.
I got the to tom tom one last year and it doesn't have that. it's a whole to do installing and it give's you about 100 meg to put on. is there a master comparison list out there?

the 750 also has an fm transmitter in it so you can listen to the directions through your cars radio. but i hear best buy is putting the 260w on sale for 189.99. Which is just like the 255 except it has a wider screen and you can't get traffic/msn. and it's not glossy piano black.

and the 750 does not have bluetooth, you gotta go up to the 760 for that, which also comes with 3 months of free traffic.

I am going to use it at Office Depot. They have the nuvi 255w on sale for $199, which would make it $149 after the $50 BB coupon. I already checked with my local OD and they said that they would take the coupon on DAT.

Im not positive about this, but I think the main difference between the 760 that I just bought, & the 780 that you're looking at is..the 780 has the MSN traffic reciever in it, whereas the 760 has the old traffic reciever. Im lovin the 760 so far, & if you want to save $100, Amazon has it right now for $250, even tho I bought it for $270 last Sunday - 12 hours before the priced dropped to 250

what's the difference between an FM Transmitter and Traffic? my DH wants one that can tell him the traffic? Is that what the FM Transmitter on the GPS does?

How traffic is transmitted to a GPS device is through RDS (radio data system), at least most GPS device uses it. Traffic data are compiled via sensors on the roads and CHP data. The data is then transmitted through Clear Channel radio stations via RDS. Give you a basic example, ever noticed your car FM radio will show song titles and artist name? It's like close caption for TV. Some GPS devices will have the RDS reader built-in to the device, but some will rely a FM transmitter to pick up the traffic signal and transmit that to the GPS device.

Having traffic sounds great in theory. In reality it sucks as traffic information are always 15-20min. late, and sensors are often broken thus traffic information is inaccurate. Also, the traffic data doesn't cover rural area or side streets, so don't get trapped by the idea of traffic info, try to find a GPS that will connect/lock satellite signal the fastest and good mapping technology.

I've only seen this brand "Nextar" at Kohls, and then only on Black Friday. If you're going to spend $80 on something that's most likely a piece of junk, why not spend the extra $20 and get one that you know will be good (the $97 one above).

I have the one they will be selling for 79.99 and I like everything about it except the voice. It has seemingly 2 different voices - one which says the command i.e. 'at 200 ft turn left on' and then another voice which says the street name. It is very annoying and I am planning to return it.

:disagree:

According to the Garmin specs (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=9160#specsTab), this unit does not even have TTS or MP3 playback. I would consider TTS to be a pretty essential feature for any GPS I would purchase. It is the most basic GPS you can find.

For $100, i'd much rather take the Nokia N500 with TTS plus the extra features seen in more expensive units like the 4.3 inch screen, FM trans, bluetooth, MP3 playback etc.

yeah no text to speech is a dealbreaker if you're driving in a heavy populated-heavy construction area city...we learned that 2 years ago in Boston and went right back to the store to upgrade to a Garmin c340 immediately.

After carefully looking at the ones for sale this BF - I chose none of them & decided to go with the Nokia 500.

I have not checked the n500 thread, but just be aware, unless you are going to hack (if they found a way..) it, the poi's are useless. They do not have a lot of places listed. the mapping was funky too. I sold both and bought a garmin 350 from wal-mart for $148. I love it!!

that's def YMMV. In Pittsburgh, the POIs seemed pretty up to date. They even had the Trader Joes that was built within the last 1-2 years.

I live in greensburg, just 45 minutes south of Pittsburgh, and to be honest the POI's suck compared to the nuvi 200 i gave away and to the 350 i have now. If i type in walmart, target or bestbuy, the closest listing is monroeville, instead of the listings that are 3 miles away...or the listings in latrobe which are 5 miles away. It seems that anything built within the last 3-4 years is not on the poi list. THat still doesnt make up for the screwy navigation....

While looking for the best black friday GPS, I found a nice alternative. Its the Magellan Maestro 3225 Refurbished for $79.99 + FSSS @ Amazon. It has TTS for street names and an easy hack to increase the POI to 6 million, as well as good reviews. It is a refurbished model so there is a risk there, but no complaints from amazon customers. If paranoid, you can get the 2 year replacement warranty for $20.

I had an issue with the Nokia 500, I was trying to get to 25 Exchange Place in Jersey City NJ. And it brought me to 25 Exchange Place NY, NY. Yeh that was a problem and after that incident I went back to my Iguidance made by INAV. I really wanted to like the Nokia but after that I felt like I couldn't depend on it.. Try it with yours... then put in like 20 Exchange Place Jersey City NJ and it will work... Maybe just a glitch but definitely left a bad taste in my mouth...

It depends on how much you want to spend I guess. I'm in the 200-250 price range so I've been looking at the Garmin Nuvi 265wt and 760. This will be my first GPS too so I wanted one with a few more features because I don't plan to upgrade anytime soon. I'm still looking around though, I have one more day:look:

I've seen some good one's as well around 100+.

Text-to Speech is the gps announcing specific directions to you as you drive like 'turn left onto Sunset Ave" as opposed to giving you some vague responses.

Thanks for this thread :) My boyfriend's dad decided last night that he wanted a GPS and I had a little "AAARGH" moment because of all the research I'd have to do. IF we can use that coupon on BF at Best Buy, I think that Garmin is the best way to go... otherwise I may get the one from the Mart of Wal.

Edit: Did a little more digging... apparently he wants TTS so I'll have to see about the Garmin nuvi 255.

Weird question - boyfriend just said that his dad wants something he can "talk to" but I don't think any GPS does that (at least not any in our present budget range) and I was just wondering if that sort of voice recognition tech exists...

I'm looking for a deal on the Tom Tom 3rd edition...I know, last years model, but we have one and we'd really like another. I got it last year at Staples for around $100 after coupons, that price would be great to find again!

you're in luck...pep boys will have the tom tom one 3rd edition for $69.99

On the coupon it says Exclusive Racing Club Member.
Can anyone tell me what that is?
I have a best buy rewards card.
Can I use the coupon with that?
Thank you.The Racing Club exclusion has never been a problem. Using rewards card with coupon worked fine for me in the past. Actually, the rewards card seems to give extra credibility to the Exclusive Racing Club Memberhip.

I'd recommend a nice color printout of the coupon.

My Garmin 205 doesn't have it and for that reason alone I will return it (otherwise its excellent)

Bluetooth question. Opinions on ones within the $150 - $250 range which has the best speaker for hands free calling?

Also are all the GPS's pretty good about after the original pairing, they re-pair every time you enter the vehicle, I don't want my wife to have to re-pair her phone with the unit each time.

What about this one from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Navigon-4-3-Inch-Portable-Navigator-Lifetime/dp/B001GQ35LI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227799330&sr=1-1)? It is better price than Staples and ships free including all what you can ask for. It has only 1.5mil POI, but the lifetime traffic NOT from Navteq works for me since we have here only coverage from TMC-RDS.
I don't know if BF price will be even lower, but this is good as it is now.

I am going to use it at Office Depot. They have the nuvi 255w on sale for $199, which would make it $149 after the $50 BB coupon. I already checked with my local OD and they said that they would take the coupon on DAT.

Best deals I've seen as of now:

265wt from WalMart for $238 (on the front page right now)

Im not positive about this, but I think the main difference between the 760 that I just bought, & the 780 that you're looking at is..the 780 has the MSN traffic reciever in it, whereas the 760 has the old traffic reciever. Im lovin the 760 so far, & if you want to save $100, Amazon has it right now for $250, even tho I bought it for $270 last Sunday - 12 hours before the priced dropped to 250

Amazon price matches itself within 30 days of purchase if you call.

I've been looking for a GPS for a long time now.

I own tomtom and garmin units before, and I think the garmin has better software overall.

however, I do not like the small screens and the largest screen garmin is the Garmin 5000 with 5.2"

Lowest price I found was $369.99 @ jr.com along with 7% live cashback and $5 off $30 google check out brings total to $339.

If anyone else have recommendation on LARGE screen GPS, please let me know otherwise I will be buying that on saturday.

3.5 and 4.2 is too small. I want at least 5"

There are many choices available.
I needed TTS, bluetooth, good battery hour( w/o cigsar jack connected), and traffic info. that falls under $100.
Sounds impossible? I bought my Garmin Streetpilot C550(refurb) from ebay seller 2 weeks ago. With paypal 10% coupon(which i received about a month ago), I paid $98 and am so satisfied.
If you are going to buy 'el cheapo' priced GPS and are expecting much from it, older model is the answer unless you really don't want to have 1 year outdated map(mine is 2008 version)

Wow, I didn't see that one in the BF spreadsheet someone posted. Great features for $89 -- widescreen (4.3"), text-to-speech, and Bluetooth to name the major ones.

I don't think you can find better features from a major brand than this deal.

GPS Magazine's Magellan Maestro 4040 review (http://gpsmagazine.com/2007/04/review_magellan_maestro_4040.php) is not stellar, but they evaluated it with a $500 street price in mind, not $89.

Fort Wayne IN Best Buys suck! They tried telling me that since most of the Garmins were on sale, the coupon wouldn't work with those ones. Oh, and the 260w was priced at $189 on Saturday! Well, I just used Google Shopping, and and found this NYC place, Top Choice Digital, and after reading all the horrible reviews, I might not even purchase from there. There's a lot of Bait and Switch tactics they use once you order and then they have you call them to confirm everything.

No, the 780 is NOT worth the extra money! If you go to Europe, the MSN receiver won't work with traffic there but the 760 (and 770's) will. If you price the receiver for both, you'll find the non MSN receiver costs less to buy than the MSN one. What does that tell you? So you can buy the 760, take the money you save and buy the MSN in addition for about the price of the 780 and have BOTH receivers!

MSN should be free as it is more a like a service in Beta than a fully matured platform. I have it and it was a waste of money and never lived up to half of what it was supposed to do. Concept is good, execution sucks in my area but YMMV. The 760 (and 770) and easily use the MSN receiver if you decide you want it. If you buy the 780 and then decide you want the other receiver, you'll spend almost another $200 dollars.

Also, don't count on the traffic too much. It sounds great in theory, having traffic information on your GPS, but it's far from being perfect. Traffic information is pass through Clear Channel stations, so if you're not close to a Clear Channel radio station your GPS with traffic is nothing more than a GPS device. Also, it's never real-time as people has to report the incident, then validate by an authority (IE Highway Patrol), then finally the incident gets broadcast. By the time you receive the traffic info, it could be 10 - 30 min. later.

If you buy the 780 and then decide you want the other receiver, you'll spend almost another $200 dollars.

Thanks for the info, makes me even more happier I settled on the 760

I'm still looking for a TTS GPS for my inlaws at $149 or less.

I have the one they will be selling for 79.99 and I like everything about it except the voice. It has seemingly 2 different voices - one which says the command i.e. 'at 200 ft turn left on' and then another voice which says the street name. It is very annoying and I am planning to return it.

I got this one- I figure it will be about $55 if I get the rebate(I think they might be the company that filed bankruptcy?). I had a discount coupon and got kohls cash. It works fine for me- but this is my 1st gps, so nothing to compare it to. You can change the setting on the woman's voice so that it sounds the same all the time)

One thing that REALLY bothers me is that it does not show stores in the area- some but not all. No WAG, CVS, some of the other store it shows are farther than ones that I know are closer. Is there any way for me to download this info on to the SD card that comes with it? Or, would I have to manually enter them all. Can this type be used for geocaching?
