He can make all the threads he wants, if you don't like it mod alert him, they're the ones who get to tell people what to do here, not you, or better yet get your own forum where you can dictate to people.

The best is very subjective to the individual's eyes viewing it. In the plasma realm, you basically have two choices at the price point you've given. Either the Panasonic 50PZ80U or the Samsung PNA50A550. Either one of these sets are great tvs and will give you plenty of wow factor when viewing HD channels and/or a Bluray or HD-DVD.

Between these two, the Panny will have better black levels, better sound quality and is from the most reliable manufacturer with a failure rate of less than 2% from what I'm told. The Sammy, will probably have a little bit better color (not by much mind you), a swivel stand (Panny doesn't have this unless you get the PZ850U at a cost of $2500), and more picture adjustment options in the menu. Read over at AVS forum in the plasma section as these two particular sets are very popular as they are both entry level 1080p's.

Either one will look awesome and both will beat the pants off a similarly priced LCD. You won't be able to touch a 120hz LCD at that price and will have to spend at least $1800 or more. LCDs just aren't as cheap as plasmas. They've come down some, but even an entry level plasma is going to give a much better picture than a mid-grade LCD and even some higher end LCDs.

Thanx everyone,
I was thinkng about the Panasonic also.
I tseems like you get the most bang for the buck.
I don't really care about the sound as it will be hooked up to a sound system already.

Does anyone recall which retailor, onlie or B&M offers the best price? Does anyone recall any ads for this?

Thank you....

KZD I've been wanting to say the same thing for a while. He does the same thing in many threads. I haven't said anything because he's never "technically" been in the wrong with what he says....

Whether the threads are needed or not...(usually not) being a jerk to every guy that comes along and asks a question you think is unimportant isn't going to really fix the problem. Just mod alert the thread if you don't like it and let them take care of it?

Where's the camaraderie people! We're on the same side!! (: Rep to kzd and intrepid for getting me talking ;p

Theres a link to the "help me find a deal" subforum, obviously much more appropriate. Its not that I dont want you to find a deal, its just the wrong place to ask.

I for one agree, he should stop posting in forums that arent relative to the subject, specifically "Black Friday" and the community that makes up this forum is somewhat responsible for its content despite having mods to officially dictate what happens. Quit pulling the "are you a mod" card, or would you prefer this forum be filled with all sort of irrelevant BS that you have to wade through?

Well it seems obvious that you shouldn't mind.
Of course not. But if I can't help the mods out by informing people of how this site works, then I don't think you should tell me how to post.

LOL you know you do that to dis people though and it makes you feel like a grown up. Again, you don't get to dictate how it works, and you don't inform them, you order them not to make posts that you don't like. Not unlike Lucy from Peanuts.

Besides which, the way the forum works is posts with no responses quickly drop out of sight.

So saying please and thank you and offering a suggestion on where to look for more information is now considered dissing? I ordered? lol.

Give me a break, every other thread that sets off my HDTV deal alert has you telling someone how to post or "asking" them, neither of which is you informing people how you think the place should work. You get snotty. If you don't think there's any problem with that, why have you gotten so defensive about the way that you yourself post?

Intrepid.
11-24-2008, 10:23 PM
There's an FAQ telling people how the site works, it's up to them to read it. If people weren't so lazy and would actually look through the threads, I wouldn't have to say anything at all. My posts are justified and I shouldn't have to "defend" myself.

Kzd
11-24-2008, 11:57 PM
You don't have to defend yourself because you don't mind, but don't play stupid, you know its very insulting to be scolded in public, just ask yourself how long would you have all of your teeth if you did that in real life everytime you saw someone doing something you don't agree with. This is why you do it, and why mods don't, they just delete threads. The FAQ doesn't say that if a thread seems to you to be in violation that hurray its your chance to play boss lady in public and reprimand people in all of the HDTV threads, it says use the mod alert button.

You don't have to say anything regardless, if you don't like a thread then move on and if no one else finds it significant it will drop off, if someone does find it worthwhile it will stay nearer the top where it belongs. The meaningless threads are a lot less of a bother than getting an email saying a post with HDTV in the title was made and then coming in here and seeing you insult someone.

Because you're going to try that "where did I insult him?" crap, refer back to how offensive it is to be told in public not to do something by a stranger.

Although it may indeed be in the wrong forum, I would second the specs he was asking about, as I am in a similar search; full 1080p, 50", plasma, $1000-$1500 budget...and i need VGA pc input as well for that money. I have been following every plasma thread and getting deal alerts and reading articles about the theory of upcoming price drops on high def tv's, and that thread the second poster linked to has a great list, but not one 1080P 50" plasma in it, so it didn't really answer the question posed. I almost bit at the panny 800U and bluray deal, planning to sell off the bluray and net out somewhere about $1200, but that was for a 46" and I'm really wanting to hold out for a 50" for somewhere in that price point (the 50"panny 800 would be nice!), and hoping to see some better deals as we near Christmas if nothing turns up for BF: I can wait for what i want to get a little cheaper, if it indeed does go down a little more in the next few weeks. Point is that the question was valid, not answered by the links given, the "help me find a deal" forum doesn't get answered by nearly as many people; I caught this one from a deal alert and hoped for something I hadn't found out about yet to pop up, because the deal the OP and I are both looking for just has not yet appeared in the entirety of the BF forums or sales to date, but no answers here so far, just arguments. Where oh where are the 50" 1080P plasma w/pc input deals this holiday season? I could get the 720P BF specials cheap! But I am upgrading from a 4 year old crapped-out BenQ 46" 720P (darn thing! too-short lifespan, and about $800 to fix it; might as well replace is as fix it!) and sit about 6-7' away in the seating arrangements; and the optimum viewing distance for a 720P 50" is further than that, while that's in the sweet spot for a 50" full 1080P.......

I'm not trying to start some sort of plasma vs. lcd debate, but...I'm going to make these comments anyway.

Plasma is a dying technology.
LCD's will soon be 0.5" thick (and smaller). The 850 series from Samsung is already down to 1.9" thick.

The LN46A650 is more expensive than a similar sized plasma, but for good reason.

The LN46A650 uses about 240 watts. The TH-46PZ85U uses 650 watts.
The LN46A650 weighs 49 lbs. The TH-46PZ85U weighs 77 lbs.

I believe these two particular models are nearly identical in thickness. However, go to the store, and check out the brightness of each TV and the white levels. Plasma is losing this battle. I was the biggest fan of plasma technology and they had the best contrast out there, but LCD has gained and surpassed plasma technology.

You will continue to see steep discounts on plasmas, which I suppose is a good thing if you want a big affordable flat HDTV.

Well one of your points i can agree with, the weight but your not going to be moving your tv more than once or a few times so it didnt weigh in my decision to get plasma. The watt consumption is MAX and the actual plasma power usage was tested at avs and i think it was in the 300s. Plasma still makes a better 42inch and up tv and I would go plasma if getting over 42inches or lcd if under (of course there is exceptions but you'll have to pay more). Having owned a samsung a550 40inch (for 2 weeks) and then upgrading to a panasonic pz80u 42 inch i can say the panasonic looks better in all aspects whether its color or black levels, and has a better tv tuner. Both tvs were calibrated for those of you that wanted to know. The better thinng about the samsung was the vga input (mine doesnt have, need to use hdmi) the worse thing about the samsung is the remote was annoying because it had to be pointed DIRECTLY at the sensor at the tv.

From what I have been reading Samsungs are great especially 6 searis and up. But they produce terrible sound from their speakers. Is that the case? How is Sony's sound? With kids it is tough to get a surround sound in my family room so I have to rely on tv's sound.

I agree about SAMSUNG and chose the 46A550. However, if money was an issue -"best bang for the buck", I would have bought the VIZIO 46" XVT for $1299 at WM, Sam's or Costco. Gets Great Reviews in all areas except for Black Levels where it simply can't compete with Samsung. For me that was a deal-breaker but for most people, it probably is not.
