View Full Version : BEst Buy are SCAmmers

I had the worst BF experience at BEst buy in Westminster CA. My brother, his friends and I stood in lines for 5 nights in the cold and rain to purchase the Toshiba laptops. When the tickets were being handed out there were no prices on them. When ask about the ticket for the advertise Toshiba, the manager handing out the tickets kept saying "I don't know what you are talking about, which laptop do you want?" When we kept saying "the one for $379.99 in the ad", he said "He doesn't know the price"…...so after much frustration I decided to take all of the laptop vouchers since he can't tell me which labtop is the $379.
As the door open we rush to the customer service counter to purchase the labtop and was given hell by the manager named Robert J. Since we had all these labtop vouchers with us, we ask him which labtop was for $379. He looks at our vouchers and he took ALL my vouchers away. I said "Hey, those are my vouchers. I need to purchase the Toshiba and the HP"...his response was "Your lucky you are getting one at all".. So he gives us the HP labtops and we are headed towards the cashier. I ask if for my vouchers back and he look at me and said "NO" one labtop per customer. I could have mad a big deal out of it but I didn’t because I wanted to get the Toshiba for my sister who was standing right next to me. I told him "she's a minor, she can't pay so I am going to pay for her"… Long story short, he assume that I was buying it for myself which is false because as the rule and regulation at BB.com states that you are allow to get one of each items...etc…..so in the end I got a HP and the Toshiba.
My friends and bro who was after us also have problems purchasing his HP. When the cashier rung him up for the wrong price of the labtop and refuse to get the price adjusted he got mad and started to yell "what kind of business are you running scamming customer...." Robert J the manager said "get out of the store or we will call the cops". …so he left...but it's sad to see that after camping out in the cold and rain for 5 nights this is the service we get and with the added bonus a cop were going to be called...I told the manager to "please call the cop because you guys are running a scam with your false advertisement" but we decided to leave because it wasn't worth it in end. When I got home I notice that they over charge me on the HP $649 instead of $349. I went to best buy to get it corrected but the manager said "sorry the sales are over" and left. When I try to call back the manager he just kept walking away from me and ignoring me.
My sister opens her Toshiba laptops and found a couple of dead or stuck pixels. I called BB and ask if they would repair the labtop and was told that if you have more than 8 pixels then they can repair it other than that I can return the labtop and that's all they can do for me.
I have always been a fan of bestbuy but after this experience. I will take my money else where. BUYERS BEWARE. I WILL NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN....
Intrepid.

You were one of those people?? We've been making fun of you guys all week! Seriously, that sucks about your bad experience but if you're a Slick Dealer you wouldn't have waited outside for almost a week when you can get equally good deals here.

I wasn't in line most of the time...my brother like to camp out with his friends. I just check in on them...but after this experience I WILL NEver buy anything from that store again.

Ouch...sorry for your experience man! 5 days early in line?! They still have some good laptop deals online and if you wait until Cyber Monday, I'm pretty sure you can get better deals than those at BB Black Friday! I would return the laptops to BB if I were you...they're not worth it. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

if you are not in line the whole time, aside from bathroom breaks/getting stuff from the car you don't deserve to get the vouchers anyways....I am surprised the people behind you allowed you to get away with this....although many places you could have been the only people in line until Thursday evening

I knew which laptop I wanted but they have like 5 different HP and I didn't know the model # off hand because it was the secret sale. But the point is that non of the vouchers have prices on them.....wth?
Phelgm
11-30-2008, 02:48 AM
Yeah and might of screwed the other people in line because you took all the vouchers. I don't care though, I guess if you waited, you could do whatever you wanted. The HP you got for $649 was right because there is an HP that's $599. Plus tax and it's $649. You get the antivirus and the printer thrown in with the package. Also, what did the vouchers look like, because the ones over here had prices and specs etc.

Wow 5 days in the bad weather.
Kristin, next time go to another BB like the south coast plaza. Also, there's no way anyone should wait 5 days inline for a dayam computer. You could dress like a bum for 5 day and collect change on the off-ramp and get enough to buy a laptop.

I'll be the first to admit BestBuy sucks (especially in my town). Five days could have been better spent working and buying a laptop for a better price without the hassle. Just my $0.02

this tale seems like a comedy of errors on your part...
1. you don't go for the 'hot ticket' item- unless you are ebaying it, it's generally crap & better to be had most of the year than what THEY want you to believe is so hot.
2. you probably missed that information floating all over the place here- or if you didn't- put number 2, as being that you actually waited 5 days or however long, to get $800 worth-o-crap, um- I LOVE BF & haven't missed yet, but- if I had to wait 5 days, I'd rather be shot. I'm expensive, I don't wait 5 days for my kids & I love them!:lmao:
And, I'm never one to butcher spelling and typos- but, if you talk like you write- you probably got dismissed out of confusion, perhaps try again?
oh- and #3- in case you don't already know this, you should have been holding each of those tickets at the front of the line up and taking bids before waiting to deal with the crap, you could have made WAY more from them!

I agree, cashiers almost always verbally tell you how much your total is. If you were paying with a credit/debit card, you would have also seen the total on the little screen. And God help you if you paid cash... Makes you wonder if this story even happened at all... and if it did, then you deserve to get hosed.

I wouldn't be suprised if they are another victim of the economic crisis in 2009. Their stock is at a 5 year low, they have been downgraded to almost junk status, made a horrible purchase of Napster at the worst possible time. And in reality, who here actually shops at BB? If there isn't a killer sale, do you even go there? I can't remember the last time I bought something at BB at full retail price.
cdmoore74
11-30-2008, 04:09 AM
I was in line for 3 days to purchase a ps3 which I sold for $1200 on ebay, a $800 dollar profit. You stood in line 5 days for a laptop which can be easily had for the past year at the price you "wanted to paid". It would have been better to camp in the comfort of your own home. Even at $100 a laptop it would have been silly to camp for over 12 hours.
Don't get me wrong; I love to camp. When the Xbox 720 or the Playstation 4 is release I will be in full camping gear only because it's new and demand will be extremely high. Not for a $350 laptop which has been selling cheaply for the last 3 years. Specs may change but a laptop is a laptop.
I've always check my spelling and grammar, but if your mad and upset...it doesn't really matter...just wanted to share my frustrating experience.
LOL are you sure you just checked your grammar? "Your" sure?
OP is hilarious -- gotta give her?(him more likely) some props for skipping thanksgiving day / meal for a piece of electronic device. :lmao: I have to call BS on the story, there can't be people out there that would spend 5 days waiting for this crap. OP just exaggerated to make his/her point.

The cops came that same morning during my PS3 camp out but after speaking to best buy management it was ok. Some towns in my area have ordinances on camping on private property. That's why I called the police department in advance. Never leave home without a game plan. And never camp if you do not know what your camping for; LOL :shake: .

I don't mean to be rude and I really do sympathize with you over your rotten experience, but how do you not notice that they overcharged you by $300 until after you left? That price would have made me say "Hey, wait a minute. Something's wrong." And I would have been watching the register that everything rang up correctly.

send a letter via email to best buy, followed by going to another store and asking for the District Manager name and number don't leave until you get it. You have no reason to explain why you need it. Explain yourself properly to him or her. You can also mention that you had such a horrible time and posted it on the net. Go to there website and give a customer review on the item and state all that information as well. The TIME, date, store # associate of is on your receipt therefore if best buy over charge you there are responsible to correct regardless if the sale is over. The receipt will show that you purchased it on black friday and you are within the guidelines. Call 800 best buy as well. Get to the District Manager and let them know you are taking it to corporate. I hope this helps. Best Buy stores are making their own rules I went on Wednesday to purchases an LCD for my parents are they tired some BS with me, didn't work I held my grounds.

I called the corporate office, they spoke to the DM and we went back and got all we came there for. They tried to charge us $599 for the HP, but we caught it before they charged us, and were coplete asses about it when we said we thought we had the vouchers for the $349 HP. Like you, the vouchers had no prices. A call to the corporate office helps.

Also, it sounds like you went up to the counter with your 8yr old sister and put down 10 tickets saying you want the $379 laptop x10, haha. Obviously it was for resale and I just know you're the type of person that has ruined Craigslist.
Do "your" homework next time and realize you'll get no pity from anyone here in regards to your stupidity. Overcharge by $300? Gimme a freakin break. Once in my life I'm actually siding with BB. What has the world come to...

some observations:
It's a bitch getting cust. service at BB at normal time of the day... try 5 a.m.
Those guys may be pissed because they can't get into the deals, unless cousin/sister is in line.
After standing a few hours in line (i dont believe 5 days, that's insane and stupid) one may forget all senses but the sight of a brown box w/ HP or Toshiba labels on it.
In general, many are tech flippers in here; dont' understand digital divide or class divide... ppl do have a struggle out there plus bad credit; no knowledge of technology but can only compete physically by shoving/pushing etc. That's why there are shootings out there.. this is a case where the customer didn't own/bring a gun, otherwise a few BB employees could have been named across newspaper pages..

If this story is true I would do a charge back on my credit card (if you did indeed use a CC.) Overcharging like that is SOP it seems, especially on BF. I'm not an advocate of charge backs for every little thing, but $300 would be worth it in IMHO.

If this story is true I would do a charge back on my credit card (if you did indeed use a CC.) Overcharging like that is SOP it seems, especially on BF. I'm not an advocate of charge backs for every little thing, but $300 would be worth it in IMHO.

So after the crapped all over you at the Customer Service desk YOU didn't check your reciept before signing it ... !!!!
DUDE -- you are my hero of the week ---
1st -- you have no life since you could afford to camp out for 5 days and nights for a lousy cheap ass laptop...
2nd - your not smart enough NOT to hand all the vouchers to Manager
3rd - after getting screwed by the manager -- you blindly sign a sales reciept and not check it...
I on the other hand had a great time at BB -- got everything i needed and the managers were most excellent --
So you got everything you wanted at BB...good for you. I am bitching because I wanted to know if this happens to people that stood in line at the Westminster, CA location. I am hand writing a complaint letter to corporate about this.
FYI-I've called BB corp. customer service and was credit back the $300 difference

5 days for a $350 laptop- I know this is slickdeals but consider the time you guys could've spent being productive and earning money. Anyways, there's a thread on here about people lining up in westminster bestbuy practically a week early. Did that store have specific specials or are people in westminster just really into black friday?

Not every BB. People here didn't line up til 10am(ish) Thursday morning. And even then it still wasn't worth it. Temps here were around 30 most of the time that day.
LOL, you guys going to make this poor fool go away! Indeed, waiting 5 nights for a black friday is one of the most dumbest thing you can do.
You can basically work that 5 days you waited in line and buy a good laptop at the original price! At lease that laptop would have better specs.

one bashing deserves another...
well.. Run this by your manager and see if you last extra day .. you're making business decisions based on your personal likings ? perhaps if it was your own business..
Remember customer is king and if you make them feel that way, all will be OK 98% of times... (it's not their fault that you got a low paying job w/ no future ) or wear a banner announcing that you're extremely sensitive and judgemental (like 90% folks in retail/cust. service ) and trying to get out of current job as soon as next job+$1 hourly salary becomes avail... (which is appearant most of the times w/o announcing it)
why does it always have to take a manager to pump some sense and logic into basic concept of customer service and courtesy ???

Actually, I'm a grad student who's working the job that I currently have since it's good money and provides health insurance until I get into the field I'm working on my masters for.
"Customer is King"? That is a steaming pile of bullshit. I am very polite to 99% of my customers, because they're typically pretty cool folks. If there's a problem, and they are polite about it, I try and help them resolve it. Most of the time I succeed. If I don't, they thank me for trying to help them and go about their day. I've had compliments on how helpful I am given to my managers many times.
However, as soon as someone starts yelling at me for no reason, and will not stop when I request them to do so, they can kiss my ass. I am not there to take abuse and bitching from them simply because they can't get what they want, right at that moment. I will turn them away and go about my day.

Working retail during college was pretty mellow for me too. If I had a customer flipping out on me for something that wasn't my fault, I would either ignore them or flat out tell them that I refuse to help them. Retail is awesome when you know you won't be there forever.

AGREED 100% going back to college right now and have worked retail for a while now. Some customers think they can get anything for nothing and can be a jerk because they think they own you. Love the shock on their face when one of the manager say sorry your outta luck. If someone comes in and is being genuine and nice we will go out of our way to help them but if they come in kicking and screaming before the story is even told we send them packing with their problem unresolved.
Actually, I'm a grad student who's working the job that I currently have since it's good money and provides health insurance until I get into the field I'm working on my masters for.

The OP has taken a beating in this thread. I say who cares how long she waited - it's her decision.
Most of us want the deal, but we don't want to wait in line. It kinda pisses uss off when someone will basically eat a bucket of sour poop to save the $100 that could've been ours had someone not been desperate enough to eat the bucket of poop (waiting in line). Am I right or am I right?

Why do other people feel it is their right and duty to tell others what to do - i.e "get a job"?The OP has the right to spend her time as she sees fit.
Like I said, I think a lot of people feel shafted because they missed the deals as a result of others going to such great lengths to get them. Black Friday doorbusters are a time when being a master slickdealer can't help you - you've just gotta do the dirty work by pitching your tent and waiting in line. Maybe that's what it is...many slickdeals members feel vulnerable because their powers don't work on Black Friday. :)

How do you know what the deal was when this frickin person doesnt even know what they were standing in line for?????This story doesnt hold water.... I CALL BS just like majortity of these people here.
Oh yeah where did you practice law for consumer rights, etc??:shake: Probaly didnt, huh?
***take a look at weather.com and look back at the weather for each day this person was out there, I dont know but I never saw any rain, I could be wrong but I see partly cloudy, not rain for 5 days. Just FYI ( I got bored and decided to check it out;) ;) )***

Time to learn how to use spell check or grammar check before posting. Here is a hint, use M$ Word, copy what you typed in the little box, paste it into Word, hit F7 and check it for errors and fix said errors, then copy and paste that back into the little box. Then folks might actually take you seriously.
Umm, no. Use Firefox or Safari which has spell check built in. Also, spelling MS with the dollar sign is lame. (http://home.cfl.rr.com/emp/M$.gif)

Best buy does suck, but you are an idiot for standing outside a store for 5 nights to save $200 or whatever it appears you save after BB jacks up the price of the item to levels it would never sell at.
After all is said and done, how much did your 100+ hours earn you in line? .20 an hour if that? I just don't get why people keep doing this, gluttons for punishment I guess. But you enable BB to keep acting like asses.

Has she posted a receipt verifying this error? Do we have proof other than their word, which so far has been continuously filled with grammar mistakes, along with multiple changes in their story? I find it hard for her to sound credible with the change in story and the many grammar issues.
folks, enough of the pontification; a lot of us/you don't even practice what you preach, i pulled a note from christech from earlier this year; multiple errors .... it's a bit hypocrit to critic others while one doesn't personally practice it..
Just point it out that even folks w/ education (or the 1s advertising it ..lol ) get lazy, careless or make mistakes.

Yes, I wasn't particularly interested in the construction of the phrases, I was just passing the time reading through a few threads. I was merely pointing out the word does exist, even if only in a non conventional dictionary. after all, how many "urban" words find there way into the Oxforor Chambers etc.
Anyway OT and this threads dead :) I have to go and stand outside BB for Sundays Doorbuster ;) Have a good day!

Urban dictionary is like wikipedia. Anyone can make up a word and meaning and post it in urban dictionary and it's doesn't make the spelling they choose in any way correct. You could spend all day inventing nonsense words on there and it wouldn't make them legit.

Well I don't see how you're going to make profit so I don't think that's a good reason, but couldn't you hang out indoors somewhere and have as much fun? Personally I got in line at BB at 9:00 Thanksgiving night just to hang out so I can understand having fun, I just think it was silly to spend 5 days outside.

If you tried to purchase the laptop bundle online from BB please check your card that was used. I got an email on 11-27 stating they had credited my account when they had not. They were forced to do so today after numerous calls to them and one call to the Attorney General of my state. So please check your accounts because according to BB the email is a form letter and actually means nothing.

Oh come on. If I was managing a store on BF and somebody walked in with a whole handful of laptop vouchers, I would also only honor one of them, especially since it seems clear to me that the security guard (maybe not the brightest star in the sky) was only supposed to be giving one per customer anyway and only did so either because he didn't understand that or he was annoyed with you and wanted the manager to deal with it. Further, I know of no rule in any state that prevents minors from paying for computers. If your sister simply didn't have enough money, you have to appreciate where the manager is coming from. 1) He has no way of knowing she's your sister. 2) He has no way of knowing she actually needs or wants said laptop. 3) It's BF. The manager has a responsibility to protect his merchandise and his customers. People come up with all sorts of schemes to get out the door with more goodies than they can carry, and this mad rush has made stores dangerous. To counter the danger, stores have begun setting up limits to what you can buy and voucher systems to prove you were in line and to superficially limit your buying power. Bringing along a friend is the most popular way of circumventing these limitations, and it's easily pulled off if the friend pays for the product him- or herself and you have him or her back after. But when the friend can't pay for the product, how can you be surprised at the response? When a manager makes an exception to a rule like that, the exception sometimes becomes the rule, and it's far more reasonable for the manager to simply say no (in the interest of fairness to other customers) than it is to give you whatever you want and let you prance away. (A man was killed in a nearby Wal-Mart from all that mad prancing.)
As for the dead pixel policy, yeah, that does suck. Check at other Best Buys. It's usually not feasible to repair dead pixels without replacing the display, so you probably would have to exchange the laptop anyway--but since they were on sale for BF, that may not be possible. If you check at other stores, they may have stock, and it sounds as though the store you bought it at would allow an exchange if they themselves have any left.

I had a problem two years ago with the laptop from bestbuy on bf. There were like 4 dead pixels so I went back to bestbuy later in the day and they said there is no way they can replace it since that laptop was sold only on black friday and they don't have anymore in the store. I figured that would happen though, I just wanted to try to see if they could help me.

This is from BB website:
How many tickets can a single customer get? Can my children get them too?
* Each customer is eligible to receive one ticket per item. If a customer wants to purchase 10 different items, then he or she is eligible to receive one ticket for each of those 10 items.
* All customers in line are eligible to receive a ticket. Customers are not required to be an adult (age 18 or older) in order to receive a ticket.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat136300050023&type=category
I believe I did nothing wrong because it clearly states that you get to have one ticket per item. Since the Toshiba and HP laptop are a different items I am allow to get both laptop.

That sucks big time bro. I went to the BB in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and came about an hour before they opened the doors. Went inside and waited in another line and was told i probably wouldn't get the laptop i wanted (the 379 one) without a voucher. I was getting ready to leave when i seen this mexician dude with about 20 of them. On a hunch i asked him if he was selling them and he said he was and i bought the Toshiba laptop voucher for 20$ and got back in line where i waited. Got the laptop without any difficulty.
That rule about the one per customer means ONE OF EACH ITEM. I mean this dude probably had at least one voucher for every item that had one. So that guy sounded like a jackass and if i were you I'd inform corporate. They usually give you some like free gift card and an apology for that sort of thing.

In any company employees/peeps are generally nice, except so much $ is passed beore poorly-compensated employees eyes that after a while changes their attitude... and employees feel their worth after being on the job for 3 months and accumulating information but can't market it on their own and get frustrated.
I am guessing any tech sales job starts around $8.50 at BB, which is less than $55 for a full shift (spelling corrected..lol) after taxes (for a single person ) ...correct me if i am wrong..
