I know this is pretty much way out in left field but I may be missing something somebody else has picked up on.
I just returned my brand new D200 because I know I want the D300. I don't want to pay more than $1k for it (stop laughing!) from an authorized dealer.
Anybody?

You'll have to wait a year or two for that price. Abe's had it for $1,300 on BF ($36 cashback). I got one.
I also bought a slightly used--still under warranty--one on Ebay for $1,000. Just make sure if you go through Ebay, the buyer will give you the receipt and that the warranty card is blank. Nikon warranties are NOT transferable.

I WON'T LAUGH. But you're kidding right. $1299 plus the -$36 cash back, free shipping anf a 4g CF card. $1263 is hella of a bargain. I couldn't pass it up either! For $200 more, just the the new one or stick with a new D200 for $799. Thats my opinion. Good Luck, if you find one for $1,000 I'll take another one too!

Another viable alternative is to pick up the d300 with microsoft cash back for ~$1100 (1300-200cashback)
I am thinking about pulling the trigger on this deal tonight.

You mean from eBay? I've considered this but I'd rather buy from an authorized dealer and I'm not overly keen on the live.com thing.

I meant from eBay. I should have been more clear. The live.com thing is a PITA but I can't find a better price.

Good luck finding that deal. I bought last week from Abe's for $1299 less ~$36 Live cashback. I have been watching for months and that is the best deal I could find. In fact, I'm currently working from home waiting for my D300 to be delivered!!! Yahoo!!! Cough up an extra $300, it will be worth it. Or wait another year or so for the price to come down.

I'm willing to bet there will be some deals before or just after the new year. Nikon's MSRP doesn't always reflect price drops, in fact the D3 has dropped significantly while the price to dealers hasn't changed so I'm banking on dealers making some drops regardless of bottom line price.
I'm not in a hurry except for the dreaded NAS!

Dude, go and buy back you D200, use it till you find the liquidations for the D300 in 2 years or so. Then you can get the D300 when the D400 comes out. The D80 didn't start dropping till the D90 came out recently. Shee's O got $500 for my D80 so I took the plunge and got the D300. I was thinking what the use of 2 awesome lens and no body, so I got it. I am charging the battery now and can't wait. Now sure if I should use my 17-55mm f2.8 or my 108mm VR d2.8 micro lens to break it in? Plus though SD I got all those Extreme III CF cards for free almost free for the 8gs. I understand though, I waited a long time for mine too! What body are you shotting with now?

Nah, the D200 was just a stop gap, I knew the 300 was what I want. I've been shooting long enough to know what I want in an upgrade, the 200 wasn't it.
I'm shooting a D70s now.

Is Abe's of Maine as reliable as B&H or Adorama?
The price on Abe's websit is $ 1,465.
Was that a deal that ended already?
I understand that Abe had a business in Brooklyn NY and they still live and operate mostly from NY.

Ohh. I just googled it for you and came across this. I thought it was a reliable site from the ratings. I do not search for camera deals so not sure which site is good or bad. Sorry for wasting your time guys.
