My Mom asked me last night if I knew of any deals to get my brother an amp for his guitar for Xmas. This is totally out of my shopping/knowledge realm. Could someone give me some suggestions on an amp and point me in the directions of any deals if there are any. It doesn't have to be something real expensive, my brother is 17 and just wants something to goof around with at home.

A price range would be helpful.

I'm guessing $100? A Roland MicroCube is around there. Small and versatile. If you've got a bit more I'd recommend any of the newer 30watt Marshalls (MG series, and I don't recall the other names, but most have 30 in the name). 30 Watts is more than he'll ever use playing by himself, but higher watts usually means a better speaker. The MicroCube is on the small side, but if you've got the $ you could move up a level to a regular cube. I also like the new Orange Crush 30watt, but that's gonna set you back about $200-$250. On the value side Behringer makes decent amps for the $.

I'd recommend getting a namebrand used amp over a new no-name. It's probably a better amp (almost definitely) and you won't loose much if any when it gets sold (almost all musicians eventually sell/trade their equipment).
