I think you mean HDMI (PS3) to VGA (projector), but that's not going to happen with any cord because HDMI sends a digital signal and your projector will be looking for and analog signal if it coming from the VGA port. The cord may not be fake, but it sure isn't going to work.
What you need is a PS3 to component. I looked at your projector's manual (http://marketing.optomausa.com/PDFs/usermanuals/Optoma_DV10_Manual.pdf) (page 13) and found you can use the VGA/D-Sub port and convert it to component using the D-Sub to RCA adapter that should have come with your projector. You can pick up the PS3 to component cables pretty much anywhere.
The only other option is to spend 150 bucks on HDFURY2 - HDMI TO VGA, which isn't cheap to say the least.

Hope this helps

For $10 bucks try it out and tell us if it works. I'd like to know if it works or not.

Component cables can easily do 1080p. What do you think they were using before HDMI and DVI ;). But seriously, the PS3 probably has a limitation of 1080i over component due to HDCP crap that will limit it to that over any analog channel. However, most games are in 720p and are upconverted for a larger resolution anyway, so you probably won't see a difference.

If you're willing to throw away 10 bucks. HDMI outputs a digital not an analog signal, so unless your projector/projector has a way to process a digital signal through a analog signal port (VGA/D-Sub), its not going to work. This is unlike DVI output, which outputs both a digital signal and an analog signal. This is why you can have a DVI port be adapted to an VGA port.
