What's your experience replacing a Tivo hard drive? Should I just buy a bare drive or go with the sites that prep them? (And which one?)

I have a Series 2 Tivo (non-HD) and I would trade up but I have the lifetime subscription for it & seems Tivo wants to charge me for new subscription on new/refurb HD units. The current unit is so noisy I have it unplugged, so not even recording! Also, I'm considering shopping my cable TV from Comcast to something else, so may look at DVR as part of that.

Thanks for any tips or feedback!

If you have the lifetime subscription on a Series 2, I would replace the drive. You'll save a ton of money in the long run. I'll ask DH what drive you should use and post again in a bit. He's the Tivo expert and a profesional geek. :teehee:

First of all are you sure it's the hard drive and not the fan. If you're sure it's the hard drive, go with a Samsung F1 or a Western Digital hard drive. Stay away from the Seagates as they are too loud. You can download instructions from the web on how to install the drive, shouldn't be too hard.
