This is the new vision S2HP the old one is S2H. Great for HTPC, it has all kind of connections you will ever need. I've been tracking this MB for a long time and this is the cheapest I've ever seen. Ordered one last night and wanted to share this since it is still offering free shipping today. Not sure how long it will last.

You say this is the new version. Does it by chance make it so quad-core CPU's don't melt this one? I remember the 780g series being hit or miss w/ the quad core.

Edit: Nevermind, specifically states 140w support. This would be excellent for a HTPC build.

Seeing as it only has one PCI-E x16 slot, does this have that crossfire hybrid support (i.e. crossfire w/ the onboard and w/ the pci-e slot)?

How does this mobo compare to this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128341

This turns out to be cheaper in the sense I won't have to buy a dedicated graphics card.

I'm looking to build an HTPC (no gaming have an Xbox for that) capable of playing Blu ray discs. Is sideport mem with large enough RAM good enough to play blu ray?

Nice price. I just ordered one 12-15, so i can't use the rebate. on the 15th, the price was $74.99 free shipping. Looks like they jacked the price up $5 and then offered a $10 rebate. Still a good deal for the great board. Lots of good features, and great stability.

Is sideport mem with large enough RAM good enough to play blu ray?I looked at that one when I was shopping. Either one should work for that. Sideport is more relevant to games, shoulnd't really impact video playback at all, and 780g is capable of that (especially if you pair it with a Phenom processor to take advantage of HT2.0)

Pretty good deal OP, I'd probably take a look if I hadn't already bought an ASUS 780g board last month.

I've never heard of crossfire hybrid support. Usually the hybrid support means that the motherboard chooses to use either the onboard gpu (if the graphics processing isn't intense) or the PCI-E slot GPU (if it needs more processing power).

Atleast that's what nVidia means by "hybrid" in this sense, maybe ati is different.

Pair it with an HD3450 card. You can get these for $30 or less at Newegg. The Hybrid means that the motherboard will recognize that you have the HD3450 installed and the on-board graphics part (HD3200) will work in conjunction with your HD3450 add-in card for increased performance over either the HD3200 or HD3450 alone. You may have to play around with a few BIOS settings to enable this feature. There are quite a few write-ups that you can google search for that describe this feature much better than I can.

I just picked up the gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R for $115-15(rebate) - 15% (PayPal)= $82.00 free ship from the EGG. I was tinkering and got my E8400 from 3.0 to 3.75 in minutes with a 2 degree rise in temp. check it out great reviews for this MB. :D

I'm using a similar board MA78GPM-DS2H with a 4850e as a HTPC. Works very well and is low (-ish) power.

That being said, I've had nothing but annoying issues with drivers, capture cards, and Vista Media Center, and honestly, unless you want to record OTA HD or ClearQAM HD, don't build a HTPC. Cable boxes royally !@*(#.

Does the HDMI output audio as well as video? I've been looking for a cheap motherboard that will output both video and audio through hdmi. That or a video card that will allow the same (but be AGP). If this wouldn't work, does anyone have any suggestions for something that would?

Mine does. But there are some issues with sleep mode and HDMI audio going out. This seems to be better in the latest ATi drivers.

These ATI/AMD motherboards will spit out audio over HDMI but.... not 7.1. I have a similar board and also have a 8200 board (nvidia chipset) which will do 7.1 (the newer audio formats) audio over HDMI, but I think that the ATI ones have better video performance than the nvidia variety. The trick to getting reasonable 1080P video playback from the onboard nvidia chipsets is to go with a phenom processor so you can get higher HT (as someone else just mentioned). It took some playing around for me to figure this out  I found that video playback was less dependent on the processor with the ATI chipsets so you can go with a X2 processor which may be beneficial to you if you're going cheap with your build. If you ask me, it's a lot of work trying to get a working HTPC running nice and stable with all of the buggy software and remotes and all the other BS, but I guess that it's worth it. It seems like this is the direction that we're headed anywho with the growing popularity of movie downloads and streaming.

I just built my HTPC (Thank you Paypal promotion) using an Asus 780G board (M3A78-EM), and I put in an ATI 3450 card to utilize the hybrid crossfire. The idea is that it uses both GPUs to increase graphics capabilities. The Nvidia offering is similar, except that it also provides the option to turn off the PCI-e card when you are not gaming or doing anything graphics intensive, which saves power.

FWIW, my windows equipment rating or whatever went up from 3.6 to 4.0 once I added in the additional HD3450 card.

FYI, my build went great, just popped everything in and it worked. Stuck a 4850e in for the CPU, 2x1GB Corsair Ram, and 2 750GB Seagates. The new tivo totally beats my old Celeron 1.4GHz with DirectX7-class graphics.

im looking to build a small HTPC.... with a little gaming and video recording...

dunno whether to get the miniATX or microATX..... (its about $150 for miniATX... smaller)

i probably have $400-$500 budget..

$70-$150 motherboard
$50-100 processor
$20-40 ram
$50-100 for case+PSU
<$100 for a good discrete graphics card
~$70 for a USB ATSC/QAM tuner
have my own HDD
no need for disc drive ATM

Anyone know the difference between rev 2.0 and 2.1---and or which one this is...The product page is 2.0 so is it definitely a 2.0 ?

I paid $70 for this board's predecessor, the GA-MA78GM-S2H, in mid September.
I have loved it since. Using one of the BE-2400s (rated 2.3ghz) that Newegg had for $25 around the same time, I run stable at 3.3ghz on my GA-MA78GM-S2H.

That's a 1ghz proven stable overclock using the previous generation of this board

The only difference I can find between the S2H and S2HP is better power regulation (for quad cores or high overclock dual cores) and a dual bios (which I don't understand the motivation for).

Happy overclocking :)

This board does allow use of both the 780g and an extra video card at the same time for 4 outputs.
