new or used doesn't matter. a lot of pple claim they are able to find a set of used turntables (technics) that retail new around $400+ each for like $100 each. a lot talk about going to bars/clubs that are closing and such but i have no idea where to look for that. craigslist doesn't help either. any suggestions?

technics 1200s have long been considered the standard. probably going on 20 years or so.
if you're handy you can get some beaters on ebay and swap good parts out for bad. a sort of frankenstein set up.
they do have a pretty stable resale value if they are in decent cosmetic condition. so if you do get used 1200s you can always resell if they dont work out for ya.
there are tons of dj in a box kits that have been sold over the past few years at places like guitar center.
if you're patient you can find a good deal on craigslist.
the problem with those are the same with the beginner guitar and amp combos.
folks want to get into music stuff and buy entry level stuff for a few hundred bucks then try to sell their goods at 80% of the retail price.
little do they know that their stuff isn't worth that much.
however because of the learning curve and impulse buying nature of these items they often sit unused after Christmas day (i want to be a dj mom!) and when spring cleaning comes mom just wants to get rid of them.
so it's a mixed bag.
