This is definitely awesome. It works at the Young Williams Animal Shelter in Knoxville, TN and it's a good deal considering the normal price is almost $200 per dog and $100 or more per cat.

Both of my pups are shelter pups. Both are great dogs.
Help close puppy mills, boycott the puppy stores and get your dog from a shelter or a reputable breeder.

What a great idea. My wife and I are huge supporters of no-kill shelters and have about 10 cats of our own (that's what she TELLS me, I am not sure) and usually several foster animals living with us at any given time.
Rescued pets are absolutely the best and they do appreciate it.:)
BTW, we love Kyra in The Closer.

Does anyone know if this includes spay/neutering, or is that up to each shelter? I have a local shelter saying that Hills is even paying for the city licensing fee, so I'm unclear on what all Hills is covering!

I'm here for the animals! I'm happy to promise that:
1) If I am getting a new pet this year, I will consider adopting a rescue animal first.
2) I will get a pet based on my family's lifestyle, not based on what we see in a movie or on TV.
3) I will make my home safe for my pets.
4) I will provide exercise, healthy food, socialization, and positive, compassionate training for a well-adjusted, happy family pet.
Tips to help you achieve this pledge:
• Visit Petfinder.com to find a local animal rescue shelter close to you.
• Learn about the species and breed you want to adopt - your local library and Internet can help.
• Visit The Animal Rescue Site's Pet Care page.
• Familiarize yourself with an exciting method of training called operant conditioning (known best as "clicker training"). This form of training is compassionate, fun, and effective with animals of *all* sizes and species, including dogs (and puppies), cats, horses, rabbits, ferrets - even birds and fish!

Agreed, big thumbs up on this one...the free shelter pet, in addition to being a great thing for the pet, is actually a good deal.
We have 2 dogs, one from a shelter and one that was roaming the hills of Southern Ohio near my in-laws cabin eating trash. It was incredibly surprising when the shelter dog ($150) actually wound up costing less than the "free" dog ($500 or so for shots, neutering, microchipping and all of the other things that were already done with the shelter dog).
So the free shelter dog is the best of both worlds.

I have a cat I got "on sale" during the Austin SPCA's summer $35 kitten thing. He's almost a year old now and absolutely awesome. Shelter pets are fantastic, he's super sweet. And all the cats should be litter trained at the shelter, so that's nice

I really give credit to all who extend a loving hand to any helpless creature.
It's getting really expensive to have a dog or cat for a pet these days and I fear our economic hardships will cause more suffering for them also.

I am on an Animal Rescue list which is run by a network of people not looking for $ or anything, just good homes for animals. If you are in the Southern CA area and are looking for a cat or dog (right now there is a really sweet calico, 9 months old, hand raised and a gorgeous mastiff) message me and I can get you in touch with the coordinator.

thumbs up! I have a shelter dog and she is the best! so smart she can learn a trick in 10 min, its amazing. I've had her for 7 yrs now, she was just over a yr when I got her. Her previous owners possibly beat her because the first time I took my belt off (to get undressed) she cowered in the corner :( broke my heart! I still well up when I think about it. Anyway, my mom has 3 shelter dogs and 2 shelter kitties... such a great thing to do!

The stuff that goes on to dogs via dog owners is unbelievable.

We have two spoiled doggies. One was neglected by the previous owner so we took him in. The other one was adopted at SPCA. We love both of them to death. Some how and in some way I feel that these helpless animals know that we took them in and gave them a warm home. I sense extra love and appreciation from both doggies everyday.
Please support your local SPCA and not the evil stores or puppy mills.

I am all for pets being adopted, but please don't jump on this deal unless you are willing to COMMIT!!!!
I personally have adopted 4 cats so far as whenever I visit the vet's office, the pound is right next door and they are usually about to be put down :(
It is a big commitment as I have given up on one expensive hobby and I have to find pet-friendly living places to accomodate for my pet's needs, but I wouldn't have it any other way. My wife and I love animals and I donate time and money to help out whenever I can and so should you.

This has me internally conflicted.
It is great to get animals out of shelters and into homes but....
Attracting people to adopt an animal by making it free is a terrible idea. The reason there are so many animals in these shelters is because people who aren't ready to have pets buy them and then give them up or don't neuter or spay (sp?) them. If you are ready to own an animal and take responsible care of it then the $30-$100 adoption fee should not matter at all to you. And frankly, if you can't afford $30-$100 then you can't afford to feed and take care of an animal.
I have a cat and he stole my car.

While I understand your reasoning, I completely disagree. When we picked out our perfect dog from a shelter, it cost us over $100 to take him home. She had to have a set of shots, get fixed, get a license and pay for being sheltered. Where is someone adopting a pet for $30? My bill was closer to $130. Plus, we had to pick up food, toys, a kennel and her own set of towels for the kennel.
Clearly it isn't cheap to own a dog, and I am by no means complaining, but by making the first step free, it doesn't mean one is going to be a shitty parent.
We have 5 dogs - all of them except one is from a shelter or unwanted by owners.. This looks like a great program.. !

Ive personally adopted, well actually they adopted me, 5 stray cats from around my neighborhood all of which ive had fixed and given the necessary gamet of shots. Fortunately i qualified for free neutering and spaying and shots to boot but vet bills unfortunately are not covered under that umbrella. Needless to say it aint cheap!! That being said if I had the room and the extra money id gladly participate. These type of animals including shelter adoptions truly make for great companions and it`s almost as if they appreciate it more, call me crazy . Anyway great post and i hope this cause is a great success!!

heres my standpoint. I have plenty of time and love to take in another dog, as well as a huge backyard, but i dont make a whole lot of money. We have 2 small dogs so they dont eat alot, and where im from adoption fees are in the $200 neighborhood. So while I am 100 percent ready for another dog and more than willing to take care of it, that $200 can be spent elsewhere. (and yes I do take them to te vet and its expensive but I can put away small ammounts a month to save incase of a problem) And by the way...i guess you were considering feeding a large dog, but my dog food bill is under $100 a year... my 2 dogs are small and a bag usually last about a month feeding the amount that the vet says.

Great thread for a great cause! With the economy in the tank, shelters and rescues have an ever-increasing influx of animals (mostly cats and dogs) and a decrease in funding and donations - and the animals are the ones that lose. :(
My family used to foster for a rescue and it's amazing how loving and forgiving animals can be after the horrible things that some of them have gone through.

We have a AKC registered Westie, and a shelter pup Westie.
We spent so much money on the first one, and $50 on the shelter pup.
He is the best $50 we ever spent. When we brought him home he was house trained, knew "No" and "Come" and "Sit" and is the snuggliest little furbaby in the world. I can't imagine why he was roaming the streets, but I'm happy he came into our lives.

The Pedigree link is dead, but the page is still up on their site. Printable form says for adoptions in 2008, but directions on first page don't say that. ??? Worth a try or a call to Pedigree, I guess?
