**** Updated they just added more states ****

I live in Alabama, so I don't know how well this will work, but it is free, so it should be worth a shot. Has to do with deregulation of Gas and Electricity markets in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Has anyone tried this? Just talked to a friend in Texas, and he said that he signed up and they emailed him asking for a copy of his last electric bill. He is still waiting on a rate.

Hope it can save someone some money.

I remember it was some kinda nightmare the first time I showed up in Texas. "What you mean there's more than one electric company?!" Still doesn't make since to me. And it was the most expensive power I payed for. Glad I'm out of it now.

Jacksonville uses JEA which monopolizes energy here. We have no choice when it comes to energy or cable. JEA/Comcast... and they both have their issues from time to time.

I feel the exact opposite to this, but know where you are coming from. I live in area of Texas where there is only one electric company I can use and they are so expensive/hard to deal with. If I just lived a few towns over I would have better options to choose from. ;)

I have a friend who is a pastor in the Chicago area, he just told me that he saved 19% on his church's gas bill through this site.

Hope it helps.

For TX residents, I think it's must easier to just use http://www.powertochoose.org/

Powertochoose is a state-run website, so there is no bias toward any one particular provider at all.

I am sure that's ultimately where this website goes to compare TX rates.

That's what I thought. I used powertochoose when I signed up originally. They only represent a few of companies that can offer power and/or gas in a given area. When I tried this site the company that I signed up with was not even listed on powertochoose. It saved me money over what powertochoose offered. Try it. It is free.

I don't know about powertochoose, but I just got emails today from two friends in Texas, one in the Houston area and one in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that said that it took a while, but they finally heard back from the site and locked in for 1 year contracts at 11.5 cents per Kilo Watt Hour. They both said that it was two to three cents cheaper than what they had been getting.

Hope this helps.

CT Residents : BE CAREFUL !
If you are on Rate 005, this rate has been discontinued by CLP. For now, you're grandfathered in if you're on Rate 005 until you move or change your service. If you hate these 3rd party electric companies and want to go back to CLP, you will pay at the standard residential rate.

I tried two different suppliers for my business. I'm on Rate 005 at home and LUCKILY I didn't change my service to another supplier. Both suppliers I tried ran the same scam. They give you a price that's about 20% lower than CLP's rate. That rate is good for a year. If you forget and don't change your service after a year, your bill is gonna triple (and oddly enough, in that one bill, you'll pay about the same as you would have if you never changed your supplier away from CLP).

I was told I had a contract to get the lower rate and that all of their fees, changes, etc are outlined in their contracts. Yeah, um, no. I never sign contracts as a general rule. I signed nothing with either company, but I was expected to abide by this non-existant contract.

Me personally- I'm a busy person. I don't like when companies make *me* work to get the best price. They need to do the work to keep my business- They need to work to save me money and provide me good service and honest service.

Its been my experience that electric is gonna cost what it costs with CLP. I don't like how much it costs, but CLP is honest, they are responsive to my needs, and their price is their price. I don't have to think about non-existant "contract rates"

Ultimately I resolved my problems and didn't pay the massive bills... But it cost me hours and hours of time, I had to involve DPUC, etc. So at the end of the game, 3rd party suppliers cost more than leaving it alone on CLP.

It is msenergy.com for my area in NJ. It looks like even with the variable (non-contract) rate I will save about $25-30/month! Thanks a bunch. I am going to pass on to all my friends.

My mother-in-law lives in the North Georgia area, and she is now signed up. They gave her a rate of 9 cents per unit for Gas. And now I have a few more details on the process. She filled out the online form, then they emailed her a Letter of Authorization, which she filled out and faxed back to them. They then were able to provide her a rate. Hope this helps.
